Not any amount of aid is going to move Africa forward. The only way for us to move forward is to ensure good governance – the way we manage our economy, our social life, our legal structures and institutions – that is the basis for development. We cannot rely on people to come and feed our poor or treat our sick. This is the responsibility of our governments.

One of the pillars of this approach to tackling fragility is self-assessment that brings together stakeholders from government, political parties, civil society groups and the private sector to discuss progress in five areas; political legitimacy, security, justice, economic foundations and public services. The assessments are a cornerstone of the new deal for engagement in fragile states and are intended to provide the basis for choosing development priorities, planning and co-operation with international actors.

Global Integrity is embarking on a partnership with the Mo Ibrahim Foundation to prepare the African Integrity Indicators (AII) 2013-2014. The project assesses key social, economic, political and anti-corruption mechanisms at the national level in all African countries. Through an expert assessment methodology, the project evaluates both legal frameworks and the practical implementation and enforcement of those frameworks across various categories, including safety and the rule of law, sustainable economic opportunity, and human development. This effort will require a global team of journalists, researchers and subject matter experts across Africa to conduct original research and gather data that will feed into the Ibrahim Index of African Governance. For information on the requirements and how to apply, please see the fact sheet below.

The African Development Bank Group (AfDB) launched on 1 July 2013 in Tunis, Tunisia its data in line with the International Aid Transparency Initiative (IATI) standard. The decision reflects the AfDB’s commitment to transparency and accountability in the use of its resources. The published data covers a wide range of information on the Bank’s public and private sector projects. The AfDB is the world’s first multilateral development bank to provide private sector and precise geocoding data through IATI. The AfDB became the 19th signatory to IATI on 14th April 2011. IATI is a voluntary initiative that seeks to improve the transparency of aid in order to increase its effectiveness in the fight against poverty. It brings together donors and developing countries, civil society organizations and experts determined increase the transparency of aid. IATI also provides a common standard for the publication of aid information.

The fall of authoritarian regimes in Tunisia, Egypt and Libya has changed political dynamics on the African continent. One immediate concern has been the implications of these developments for the African Union (AU) and its member states. Would overall political dynamics in the AU be changed? Would the most powerful member states use the altered circumstances to enhance their influence on AU policies andframeworks? What would the impact be for the AU's overall authority? In this Discussion Paper series, three edited papers are presented that tackle AU political and institutional dynamics in light of the Arab revolts. A particular puzzle addressed is the current postures of South Africa,Ethiopia and Algeria within the AU. A separate analysis of Nigeria's role was published earlier in the NAI-FOI Lecture Series on African Security.

The African Union (AU) turned 50 years old in May. In a person’s life, that’s a major milestone. Some are either facing a mid-life crisis or looking back happily at their busy life’s accomplishments, hoping for a peaceful future. So it goes for the AU - turning 50 is a milestone, although one can say that for an institution with 53 relatively young independent states, it is an early milestone. Some progress has been achieved and much remains to be done. ECDPM’s Isabelle Ramdoo’s blog considers three elements - politics and economics in the making, current internal and external dynamics, and the importance of choices to focus on the important things – that will be important to accomplish the objectives set for the next 50 years.
