Guardian Higher Education Summit

JISC is proud to sponsor the Guardian’s Higher Education Summit which is now on 11 and 12 March 2010

An outward-looking forward-thinking summit stimulating debate and shaping thinking on rising to the challenges facing higher education.

The Guardian's annual summit for higher education leaders returns for the fourth year with a new format and a new outlook.

The combination of the fiscal crisis and imminent reductions in public service budgets coupled with significant changes in the demands faced by institutions means that the way forward for higher education has become increasingly contested.

The Summit will bring together higher education leaders for a series of debates that will explore future scenarios for the shape and structure of the sector. Led by key stakeholders and shaped by expert analysis the debates will be supplemented with in-depth panel discussion, focused breakout sessions and insightful keynotes.

The programme is still in development but you can expect an event that will

Look beyond our shores for inspiration, the event will seek international comparisons and explore structures from Europe and further afield.

Explore innovative approaches that will enable higher education to adapt to meet rising demands in a climate where more will be required for less.

Bring together leading politicians in a Question Time style discussion that will attempt to eek out the variant political view points on the future of higher education in this country.

The summit will stimulate discussion, seek links between and debate

The future of higher education funding

Scenarios for the structure of the fees regime

The marketisation of higher education

The role of globalisation in higher education

Promoting participation and enabling access in the current economic climate

Empowering world-class research

Enabling excellence in teaching

Register your attendance online

e-Research: What is it and how can it help me?

This JISC-sponsored roadshow, for researchers and those providing IT support services, will introduce the concept of e-research and some of the tools, along with case studies from practitioners in various disciplines.

Many academics engage in a combination of teaching, administration and research. All will be familiar with the use of networked technologies help them work together, teaching and administering large numbers of students, often at a distance, perhaps through managed learning environments or video-conferencing

The term e-Research describes the use of networked technologies to support research activities, by enabling the capture, storage, analysis, publishing or sharing of large amounts of complex data often by remote or distributed teams. Technologies and services specifically for e-research already exist and are increasingly used, with many freely available. Additionally, other tools already familiar to academics in other contexts can be adopted and adapted for e-research.

OSS Watch Open Development Workshops

OSS Watch will be holding two concurrent workshops on the theme of open development. One workshop will examine open development as a part of open innovation; the other will address building an open development community around a software project.

Individuals should register for the single workshop that interests them most. However, it should be possible to move between the two workshops on the day, so long as space allows.

Open Source, Open Development, Open Innovation
The central concept behind open innovation is that in a world of widely distributed knowledge, organisations cannot afford to rely entirely on their own research. Open innovation is a means by which companies can both collaborate on research and share outputs. Although originally defined by Chesbrough as being dependent on patented technologies made available under licence there is growing recognition that open source software provides an excellent means for sharing outputs in a controlled and managed way to facilitate further innovation.

This workshop will introduce open innovation as defined by Chesbrough and look at how it applies to software outputs from academic research institutions. We will look at how open innovation through open source and open development of software can result in more sustainable software outputs and increased opportunities for continued work. Finally, we will look at how these models allow for commercial or social exploitation of outputs whilst allowing the researcher to remain focused on research rather than business planning.

At the end of this workshop you will:

Understand the basic models of open innovation

Be able to apply open innovation concepts to open source software development in research environments

Develop open innovation engagement plans for research software outputs

This workshop will be of interest to anyone conducting research that produces software outputs. Participants will either be engaged with non-academic partners or will be interested in engaging in an unobtrusive way. The primary audience for this workshop is:

Principal investigators

Funding bodies' programme managers

Technology transfer professionals

Further information and how to register

Open Development: Building an Engaged Community

Open development thrives on a diverse community of participants who engage in the project and also attract others with new skills and resources. Such a diverse community also increases project sustainability as the project can survive the exit of participants.
However an engaged community does not just form itself, rather it requires active and continuous encouragement, particularly from the core project team. This workshop will help you understand how open development works and provide you with a practical appreciation of the skills, practices and mechanisms that encourage an engaged community.

At the end of this workshop you will:

Understand how open development works and know the common community structures

Be familiar with the skills and processes that encourage community participation

Develop ideas for improving the community friendliness of a specific project

This workshop will be of interest to those involved in a development project and who wish to benefit from improved community engagement or wider participation through open development. For example you may wish to become sustainable past the current funding round or expand your user base into new areas. In particular we think the following will be most
interested:

Project managers

Software developers

Researchers whose projects produce software outputs

Further information and how to register
