I admit.  You can run an internet business from your kitchen table, but a more suitable workspace would help in being efficient and cutting down on distractions.  Your own desk or a designated computer table would work nicely. Include some good lighting and get your workspace organized with places for your notes, paper, printer, and anything else you need to work properly.  A phone may or may not be included.  It’s best to cut out any distractions, so close the door.

The second key is to set aside a certain amount of time each day for actually working your business.  It could be the same time, 5 or 6 days a week.  It could be a block of time that shifts each day.  Depending on your schedule, this block of time could be in the am one day, the pm another.  If you have a tough time with self discipline, a set time of day may work out better for you.

The third key is to spend your business time working your plan.  You should have a plan.  What is it you are going to do and what are the steps to getting it done?  You may have to do research, write articles, create a blog, create sales funnels, or whatever your plan requires.  If you are not sure of all the steps to take in your plan, take the next step.  In other words, do something.  Often times when you take one step, the next step will become apparent to you.  For an internet home business, you should have a daily focus on making sales.  Don’t waste your time playing with your email or surfing the net.

The fourth key is have a way to measure your progress.  You can tabulate your earnings each day.  You can measure how many articles you wrote and submitted to directories.  You can measure just about anything and everything.  You need to see that you are moving along.  Which leads us into key number 5.

Every so often, reward yourself.  If you hit a sales goal, or get a certain number of articles published, take time out and reward yourself.  It could be a day off, a great meal at a restaurant, or even a few hours on the beach. This will help you stay motivated and work toward bigger and better rewards.

The final key for a successful online home business is to modify your plan as you go.  We all know things don’t always work out as we want them too.  That’s ok because you are flexible and unafraid to change your actions to achieve the end result.  Toss out what isn’t working and add something new.  This may include outsourcing some tasks, or buying software to make things faster and more efficient.  Maybe you need to adjust your work space, or work time.  You modify until you are successful.  You persist until the project is done.  You’ll be happy you did.

The site provides three months of performance data in easy to read graphs as well as these other cool features.

• Comprehensive search engine.
• Sortable tables that you can filter as you wish.
• Updated daily.

One of the best features is that it shows the refund rate for the products.  How accurate that information is I can’t say.  Nonetheless, it’s all useful and gives you a good idea on how a product is doing.  I find the site helpful in deciding what I’m going to promote.

At the moment the site is in beta and is allowing free memberships.  At some point they plan to charge a small fee.  There’s a note on the front page that says if you sign up now, you’ll be free for life.  Sounds like a good idea to me.

I was a member of Niches in a Box for a brief period of time, but found that it did not suit me.  First, let’s look at the good things.

The sites are huge and come with a blog, squeeze page, autoresponder series, blog posts, affiliate programs to promote, thankyou page, and even an ebook you can sell.  The back side includes some training manuals and videos.  Although, when I was a member, I thought the videos were not thorough enough.  I understand that many more have been added since then. 

You can load the whole thing onto your own webhost or you can pay them to load it up for you.  It sounds great and feels like it would work.

The downside to it all is that there is a lot of work for you to do once you get the site.  The pages seem to be built on general keywords and the articles are only so, so.  You need to get a load of articles up quickly for the site to make any sense.  Otherwise it’s going to look like it’s full of junk pages.   

Remember it’s a membership site and everyone is getting the same thing.  If you want your site to look unique, there’s even more work for you to do. 

You get a new site each month and there’s no real choice as to what the site will be.  You may have a huge site on some topic you know nothing about, or worse, don’t care about.   Once you’re autoresponder series runs out, then what do you do? It won’t take long for any of your customers to figure out you don’t know much and are just trying to make a quick buck.

Which brings me to the major point.  If you’re going to go through all that work and trouble, you may as well build your own site.  Start a website on something that’s fun and enjoyable for you.  Something where you’ll be happy to build relationships with people and sell things you are proud of selling.

If you want to have a website you can just throw out there and make a footprint on the internet than maybe this is for you.  To be honest, there are a lot of other cheaper services that will do nearly the same thing.

For me, I’d rather build my own site.

There’s nothing worse than a marketer sending me some lame form letter that he got from the merchant.  Some of these people are so darned lazy they can’t even write in a few of their own words.  How about a little rewrite so at least it looks like you actually wrote it?

The sad part is I’m talking about supposedly “big” names in the online business field.  They want to be the top affiliate so they’re quick to get the email out.  Or they want to have the first good bonus package.  They forget about the process of selling and establishing relationships.

So I’ve come up with a new policy.  I’m not buying from anyone who sends me a form sales letter unless he or she has taken the time to write a few blurbs of their own on it.  That’s right.  No effort, no sale.

As for those marketers who don’t bother to personalize their affiliate emails, they can just send me one email with all their names.  Yeah, that sounds good.  You guys can have your own membership site called the Lazy Losers Club and send out one email with all your names and affiliate links included.  That way I can delete all of you with one click.

I did belong to Rip2It (formally AdsenseRealEstate)  for a brief period of time.  Rip2It had a monthly fee and produced two websites a month for you, plus you had the option of using some other generic websites they made for the sole purpose of using adsense.  Of the two websites produced each month, you could chose your own topic and they would make a blog based website and stuff it with seven articles to get you started.

To me, the sites were a little goofy.  The table of contents were all keywords that had to be linked to articles.  You could try to link them to the original seven, but you really needed to write additional aritcles in a hurry, otherwise the navigation looked stupid.

From page to page, the table of contents changed to different keywords.  More articles needed.  Plus, some of the keywords I never would have used if I built my own site.  They just didn’t blend well with the site.

I’m not convinced the pages were SEO optimized either.

What really bugged me is after the first site or two, the article quality dropped off.  One site looked like they used an article spinner because all the articles seemed to say the same thing.  Maybe it was just me, but at that point I thought I could do better building my own sites.

The upside to the project included decent videos to show what’s what and they seemingly tried to upgrade the product from time to time.

The downside was when the time came for me to cancel, I was told I had to give 30 days notice.  That meant I ended up paying for another month.  Weak.

Secondly, if you don’t do a lot of work on it, the site is basically a junk site.  The search engines don’t like junk anymore.

You may as well just build your own sites or blogs.

My take on the whole thing.  Neither good, nor bad.  You decide.  It wasn’t for me.

If you’re really into premade sites, there are a lot of cheaper places to get them.

I have to admit, I was doing things on the cheap. I put up only 3, maybe 4 pictures where others had 10 or 12.  A lot of the sellers had a buy now button, I didn’t.  Many had great feedback from customers, I had none to start with.

Most of the trains I sold as individual pieces.  As the weeks progressed I began to get feedback from customers and surprisingly, the prices I was selling at were often higher than other, seemingly more experienced sellers.  They certainly had more pictures and feedback than I did, yet I had higher bids.

When it was all over, I ended up with 100% positive feedback and a nice chunk of money.  The key to my succes was in the customer feedback.  Only a few things were important and believe it or not, price was not one of them.

Here is what the customers wanted. 

• The number one factor was that the item bought was as described in my online description.  I told them exactly what they were getting.  I told the truth.
• The second factor was that the items were packed beautifully and securely (thanks to my girlfriend). 
• Third was prompt delivery.  That’s understandable.
• The last item mentioned by many was that we were nice people to deal with.

Which just goes to show, even online, people want to deal with a personality and a nice one at that.  You can take that to the bank.

You can find affiliate programs easily. Go to Google and type in affiliate programs and you’ll find pages of them. Check a few of them out. Be sure to look at some affiliate networks like Commission Junction or Clickbank.
Most networks are free to join and provide a wide assortment of products to sell.

I think the best way to start is to promote a product that you actually own or use. If you’ve ever bought anything online you can check the product website to see if there is an affiliate program. If you’re comfortable recommending this product to a friend of yours, you’ll have little trouble selling it online.

In a typical affiliate setup, the merchant provides his or her affiliates with the tools and resources required to sell the product. The resources are usually some text, graphics, banners, instructions, and all kinds of things you can put on a website or into a blog. The merchant stands to gain from your success. They will usually help you in any way they can.

It’s best to add a little bit of yourself into your sales literature. Tell your customers how you feel about using the product. What did it do for you? What will it do for them? Tell a story. Give examples. Let it come from your heart. If you put up a website or blog with the same sales letter as a thousand other websites, you’re going to get lost in space. You need to tell your story.

You want to be able to put yourself in a position to add more products and drop the ones that don’t sell. This may mean developing a good content based website. It may mean several small mini-sites, or many blogs. Think about products that give you commissions every single month. Selling memberships to a subscription based website could give you ongoing commissions even though you made only one sale. Keep thinking and keep moving forward.
