With massive layoffs and cutbacks occurring across the US, many are looking for a way to get back into the work force or to increase their reduced income.  According to the census burreau there are 78.2 million baby boomers reaching retirement age.  Out of these boomers there are 7,918 turingin 60 every day.  That amounts to 330 every hour.  What defines a baby boomer?  Those born between 1946 thru 1964 are considered baby boomers.   In 2011, the oldest of the baby boomers, the generation born between 1946 and 1964, will turn 65 years old.   Among the Americans celebrating their 65th will be our two most recent presidents, George W. Bush and Bill Clinton. Other well-known celebrities reaching this milestone include Cher, Donald Trump, Sylvester Stallone and Dolly Parton.   The baby boomers have dictated the economy since the day they were born and still do as we see these boomers getting into business for themselves thru a home based business that is done online.

According to AARP Magazine, March/April 2009 issue, direct sales through home parties and home business is a growing area.

AARP, the American Association of Retired People is at the forefront of what going on in the job market because of how much retirees and those nearing retirement age have been effected by our economic down turn. There are people in the manufacturing industry who have been at the same job for over 30 years, nearing retirement, used to a very good salary and now they are jobless without the skills for something new.

I know that pinging and dripping sound like something a person should visit the doctor about but they are actually techniques that I use to stay in touch with people in my network. 

PINGING:

I stole the pinging concept from Keith Ferrazzi. Here is an explanation about pinging from Inc.: Eighty percent of success, Woody Allen once said, is just showing up. Eighty percent of networking is just staying in touch. (Keith) Ferrazzi calls it “pinging.” It’s a quick, casual greeting. He makes hundreds of phone calls a day. Most of them are simply quick hellos that he leaves on friends’ voice mail. He sends E-mail constantly. He remembers birthdays and makes a special point of reaching people when they have one. When it comes to relationship maintenance, he is, in the words of more than one friend, “the most relentless, energetic person I know.”

DRIPPING

Is the term I use to describe how I drip information on potential business partners. Sometimes things don’t align (life happens, etc.) and a person who is very interested in your product or business doesn’t get involved right away. These are the people I drip on. I send them a weekly email with information about an upcoming meeting or conference call and then I always add some type of value to the email such as a link to an article on small business. Lastly, I invite them to re-engage with me. I offer my phone number and tell them to give me a call if they have any questions.

In fact, I believe that every small business owner should have a blog.

Yeh Mon!  We just recently got back from an all expenses paid luxury vacation to Jamaica.  Zurvita treated their top 20 producers and it was an awesome time.  It was really cool to be able to spend quality time with the leaders of Zurvita and establish new friendships.    This was the second top producers trip Zurvita has sponsored which is totally cool since Zurvita  is not even a year old yet.  The first top producers trip was to thee Bahama’s.  The next top producers trip will be to St. Lucia.  We are exciteed about all of them!

The top producer’s destination was Ocho Rios, Jamaica.  We were treated to luxury beach front suites at the Sandals Dunns River Villagio.  The resort was gorgeous.  We enjoyed all water sport activities including scuba diving.  The golfing was also included.  My husband and I also indulged in many spa treatments which were also totally awesome.

The resort had it’s own private beach which was scattered with palapas, hammacks, lounge chairs, massage huts and private lounging beds right on the beach.  One of the couples even had their own private candle lit dinner served to them right on the beach!  Anything we asked for was delivered.  Zurvita really knows how to treat their top producers!

The trip was a great experience.  One thing that top producers all have in common is they love competition!  So the volleyball games were fierce, the team relay games were fierce, the ping pong and pool games got fierce, the card games got fierce and even the golfing got fierce, if you can believe that.  One of the most fun experiences was the Dunn’s River Falls in Ocho Rios.   

After our Zurvita friends left to go home, my husband and myself hung back and extended our stay.  Off to Negril we went.  What a beautiful part of Jamaica Negril is.  Negril is located on the West side of Jamaica, many parts of Negril stretch out over the cliffs.  We treated ourselves to a very private luxury villa right on the cliffs at a place called The Rock House.  We could not have asked for a more perfect spot to enjoy a very private and romantic sunset right from our own private deck.  The restaurant at the resort is also known for it’s excellent food, so my husband was always happy.

Then on to Negrils 7 mile beach which was a change from the cliffs.  We were referred to a wonderful boutique resort right on the 7 mile beach.  This resort also had it’s own private beach area.  Interesting though, I cannot tell you how many times we were asked if we needed any “smoke” or “ganja”.

We walked the beach every morning and afternoon and of course always made certain we were beach side every evening with a cocktail to enjoy the wonderful Negril sunset.  It seems as if it takes so long for the sun to set, but once that big red ball starts dropping into the water, it seems it is gone almost instantly.  It was beautiful.   We actually ended up extending our stay for three more days just to be able to soak it all up.  We finally did come home though.  We missed our family and our doggies.

Holiday Planting Season Brings A New Year Harvest!

Just because people are very busy during the holiday season with shopping, family gatherings, traveling, cooking, baking, cleaning and putting up decorations does not mean they may not have business on their mind. They are just a bit distracted. Try not to make the mistake of thinking that this would be a good time for you to shut down your prospecting efforts especially those who are brand new or just starting a business.  Do the opposite of most people and perk up your holiday planting efforts during this season!

Make sure you’re still planting lots of seeds! Even though it seems like no one is listening or ready to get started with you in your business.  Get the emails out, let those autoresponders do their job and make sure to send out personal emails, Christmas greetings and letters (with your website link and email of course), flyers and business cards.  Because when January rolls around there will be people interested in earning extra income. They may also be looking for a home business so they can benefit from the great tax deductions.

So make sure you always keep YOUR name in front of lots of people every day so that they remember WHO to call when they are in the looking zone!  Trust me! I remember back in 1984 when I started with a company that I was with for many years. I signed up in November during the holidays!  I remember back then though that it seemed like NO one was listening or interested in anything I was doing and it was getting to be quite frustrating to say the least so I know what it’s like because I’ve been in your shoes!  Everyone was SO busy, preoccupied with the holiday season. I’d hear “get back to me after the holidays!” “Call me after the first of the year.” This can be quite frustrating to a new person just starting out.  I can’t tell you HOW many times I heard those two statements! In fact, I still do even after all these years!

The excellent thing about Network Marketing is the eventual long term leverage that gets built. All those seeds planted many years ago are STILL bringing in a bountiful harvest today and will continue to for years from now!  Others that slow down during the holidays will just have to catch up with those who keep on planting!  January, February and March have always been very active recruiting and selling seasons in Network Marketing and NOW is the time to take ACTION by continuing to fill your funnel during the holiday season so you can experience a New Year’s harvest year after year after year!

Our Plan B is booming and it is recession proof.  We are on track to replace our current 7 figure income as a doctor in private practice with our Plan B to retire from the medical profession.  You see, in the medical profession, there is nothing residual about treating a patient.  We are trading time for money just like the every day worker bee.  Through the power of network marketing and residual income, we are able to leverage our time and earn a very substantial residual income.  Does today’s economy have us worried?  Not at all.

Today, more than ever before, you need to be in business for yourself. As our economy becomes more and more global, the employment outlook grows more unstable for US workers. Is there anything you can do about it?

Let’s face it, most of us need the assurance of a steady paycheck to sleep at night. Being able to rely on present and future income means not only that the bills are going to be paid, but that you can make major purchases, like houses and cars, without worrying that you’ll lose them along with your job.

Unfortunately, job security, once taken for granted by most working Americans, is quickly being relegated to the memory boxes of an older generation, along with 40-year anniversary gold watches and other appreciation gifts for longevity.

It used to be that once you attained a fair amount of seniority, you could rest assured that if the company cut jobs, yours wouldn’t be one of them. Now long-term workers get nervous when there are rumblings of downsizing and outsourcing. They are generally paid more than younger workers, and instead of valuing them for their experience, companies crunch the numbers and figure out how much they can save in salary, health insurance costs, and pension funding if they follow a “first in, first out” policy.

The most fortunate workers are lured into early retirement programs; the least fortunate are simply given their notice. While official unemployment figures don’t reflect it, countless people have been forced out of decent-paying jobs into low-paying ones. Sure, the government counts them as “employed.” But most view their jobs as stop-gap measures, a way to barely get by while they remain hopeful that one day they’ll find another job as good as the one they left.

Instead, the chances are they’ll move from one low-pay job to another. The manufacturing jobs that formed the basis of the Fabulous 50s economy have moved elsewhere. Former areas of thriving steel plants and automobile factories are now referred to as “the rust belt.” The auto industry alone announced over 90,000 job cuts in 2006. Most of these were “good union jobs” with enviable pay and benefits. But union jobs have been steadily declining. In 1945, nearly a third of Americans held union jobs. Today only 12% of workers belong to unions. As their numbers have shrunk, so has unions’ ability to negotiate favorable contracts for their members.

White collar workers are hardly immune. In 2006, Ford announced it was offering “voluntary buyouts” to 10,000 salaried workers, including high-level executives. Those who took the buyouts explained they thought it was better than being laid off, which they assumed would happen next. Workers were offered the services of “outplacement agencies”-employment agencies that try to find new jobs for displaced workers. But in towns that depend heavily on one industry that is downsizing, it’s more likely that laid-off employees will have to sell their houses (in a real estate market that has also taken a price downturn) and move to some other part of the country.

In 2002, the technology sector dumped 150,000 software jobs. In 2006, computer chip maker Intel announced job cuts of over 10,000. Students were told that their best bet for the future was information technology. They worked hard for technology degrees, earned millions for their employers, and then found themselves with nowhere to go-because their jobs were moving to India, China and Russia.

Another relatively new obstacle to job security is the practice of “offshore outsourcing.” We all know how it works: Someone in India or Mexico does your job for 15% of what you were paid. More and more, outsourcing is affecting any job classification that does not depend strictly on a US or Canadian location. For example, if you’re a waitress, grocery clerk, or store manager, you can’t very well be outsourced. US factory workers were the first to be hit hard by the “giant sucking sound” of their jobs moving to other countries, but now software developers, engineers, journalists, and other professionals are facing the same fate.

Of course, the reason is the bottom line. Companies are in business to make a profit. Creating secure jobs for their employees is not their concern. Scaling back on labor costs is the number one way to increase profit margins, whether through outsourcing, not replacing employees who quit or are fired, paying workers less, or using non-union, lower paid, or part time workers here. The country’s major employers are huge multi-national companies. Playing musical chairs with jobs among different countries is as simple for them as the children’s game.

It isn’t pleasant to think about. It’s certainly easier to just assume that your job and your paycheck will always be there for you. But denial of a problem will not make it go away or solve it, and some day you may wish you had thought to create a backup plan for maintaining your income without relying on your current job.

At this point, you are probably asking yourself, “What can I do to be financially secure?”

As grim as the employment picture looks, there is still a way to provide an income for yourself that you control. Being your own boss means no one can lay you off or cut your hours and benefits. It’s up to you to take control of your future income and your future security.

Energy rates seem to always increase. A multitude of factors are responsible for rate increases. “Energy hopping” is one of these factors. Energy hoppers are individuals that do not plan on paying for energy. These energy hoppers move around from company to company with no intention of ever paying their energy bill. The stroy is below:

The Watchdog: ‘Energy hoppers’ cost us all more

Thousands of electricity customers in Texas are dealing with high bills by skipping out on them and signing up with new providers.

They are called “energy hoppers,” and electricity companies don’t like to talk about them. Who can blame the companies?

“It happens all the time,” one administrator at a Tarrant County social-services agency told me. “A whole lot of people do it.”

A Reliant Energy spokeswoman said, “We see unpaid balances on thousands of closed accounts.”

Because other electricity providers don’t know who they are, delinquent customers have no trouble finding a new company to serve them.

A spokesman for the Public Utility Commission calls it “gaming the system.”

The practice has become so widespread that PUC Chairman Barry Smitherman spoke out on it this month. Customers who owe money should “work it down” with the providers to whom they owe money rather than switch to a different company and leave the old company with unpaid bills, he said.

Energy hoppers don’t get away with it entirely. Their credit ratings can suffer, and some electricity providers threaten to take wayward customers to small-claims court, although none acknowledges doing that yet.

But electricity providers are hampered by state rules that prohibit the creation of a statewide database showing customers’ payment histories. If there were one, providers could see which customers are big risks.

Providers get only coded summaries from credit agencies of a customer’s general history of utility payments to phone, electricity and cable companies. Apparently, that’s not enough to tell them who the delinquents are.

It’s also not enough for them to figure out how much a new customer should pay as a deposit.

The worst part about energy hoppers? In the end, good customers who pay on time end up footing the bill, providers say.

I discovered this when researching the case of Lori Conway of Fort Worth. She complained to The Watchdog that she received a $2,600 bill from Ambit Energy of Dallas and that she had been accused by Oncor, which reads her meter, of meter tampering, which she vehemently denies.

When I contacted Ambit and Oncor, I learned that Conway had not received an electric bill for eight months. Her big mistake? She never called to ask why.

“They didn’t send me a bill, so I thought, ‘Don’t worry about it,’ ” she told me.

Ambit cut off her electricity, which forced her family to find other lodging for four days, and told Conway that she had to pay $2,600 to get the power turned back on.

Instead, she signed up with another company, which did not require a deposit despite her big bill with Ambit and a 2-year-old personal bankruptcy filing listed in public records. Among her creditors in that bankruptcy: TXU Energy for $1,100.

She has electricity again, but Ambit says it’s not done with her. Her debt is being referred to a collection agency and she may be sued in small-claims court, Ambit co-founder Chris Chambless told me.

Conway said she realizes that she should have jumped on the matter when bills stopped showing up each month. Now, she said: “I live from paycheck to paycheck. How I would ever come up with $2,600. It’s had me stressed, to say the very least.”

State law used to allow an electricity provider to get records from other providers when assessing the risk factor of a new customer. But that provision expired 20 months ago.

Despite pleas from some providers, the state has not created a rule allowing a statewide database because of concern that it could place an unfair burden on some customers, especially lower-income households. It’s up to the Legislature to fix this loophole and put an end to energy hoppers.

But because electricity bills are so high, there has been a reluctance to make matters worse, The Watchdog concluded after talking to consumer and energy groups.

Without a database, companies say they have to be smart in deciding how much of a deposit to require. Under Texas law, electricity providers cannot deny anyone service based on credit history. A deposit is their only leverage.

Current law allows utilities to charge deposits to residential customers of up to one-fifth of an estimated annual billing or the estimated sum of the next two months’ worth of bills. Customers with good payment histories are usually allowed to forgo a deposit, companies say.

Deposits are not required from Texans over age 65 with good payment records, people with medical problems, victims of family violence and people receiving government aid.

I checked with several companies for their policies, and they vary, so consumers should always ask.

Not all providers agree on the need for a statewide database. Stream Energy, for example, says it “would not be in favor of anything that would create unfair barriers to consumers looking to exercise their options in the marketplace.”

TXU acknowledges speaking to state regulators about such a database. Direct Energy says it would support one, too, because nonpayers result in higher rates for people who pay on time, spokeswoman Lisa Dornan said.

In Conway’s case, her meter stopped and showed zero electricity usage for more than seven months. Meter readers thought the house was unoccupied. But in the summer, a meter reader noticed that the air conditioner was running but that there was still no usage shown.

An investigation showed that someone had stopped the meter, but Conway says she knows nothing about it.

Still, when it came time to switch companies, she easily signed up with a new one.

The required deposit: zero.

Under Texas law, no one can be denied electricity service because of credit or payment history. Providers also cannot charge different rates to customers based on their financial worthiness.

Price jolt: Electricity bills going up, up, up

Here’s a shocker: Electricity bills are heading up. Way up.

Utilities across the USA are raising power prices up to 29%, mostly to pay for soaring fuel costs, but also to build new plants and refurbish an aging power grid.

Even more dramatic rate increases are ahead. The mounting electric bills will further squeeze households struggling with spiraling gasoline prices.

“Consumers now face a tough reality on electricity,” says Mark Cooper of Consumer Federation of America.

The increases come after rising fuel prices already have driven up utility bills nearly 30% in the past five years, the sharpest jump since the 1970s energy crisis. Fuel costs are again the main culprit. In Virginia, Potomac Edison, citing high coal and natural gas prices, plans to raise rates 29% on July 1, pushing an average monthly residential bill from about $70 to $90. AmerenUE, Missouri’s largest utility, recently asked for its first rate increase in 20 years, a 12.1% boost, mostly to cover higher fuel costs. Customers of Public Service Co. of Oklahoma were socked with a 25% rise on June 1.

The price of coal, which fires half of U.S. power plants, has doubled since last year, largely because of surging energy use in countries such as China and India. Natural gas prices are up nearly 50% on high U.S. demand. In California, drought has forced Pacific Gas & Electric to replace cheap hydroelectric power with natural gas, helping to prompt it to seek 13% rate increases.

The cost to build a power plant has also gone up, more than doubling since 2000. South Carolina Electric & Gas wants to boost rates 37% by 2019 to cover its share of two nuclear reactors costing $10 billion.

Some utilities are seeking several increases. In New York City, Con Edison, which raised rates 4.7% in April, seeks increases of 5% in each of the next three years to fund $5.5 billion in equipment after a 2006 Queens blackout. That’s on top of an anticipated 13% rate increase this summer for higher fuel charges. “We must make sure that our system has the highest reliability,” says Con Ed spokesman Michael Clendenin.

Queens Assemblyman Michael Gianaris says Con Ed wasted funds on new plants elsewhere and urges regulators to reject the proposal. “I say not one penny more until reforms are done,” he says.
Expect bigger rate shocks if federal legislation, anticipated by 2010, passes and forces coal-fired generators to pay fees to emit global-warming gases.

American Electric Power, the largest coal-fired generator, will have to raise rates 115% to pay higher fuel costs, build new plants and recover global-warming fees, says Hugh Wynne of Bernstein Research. But Wynne says regulators could temper increases by trimming profits.
