ZUMIX Radio joined forces for a second time with Gately Youth Center in Cambridge to record stories written by young people in their My City, My Voice program, a city-wide project run by Cambridge Mayors Summer Youth Employment Program that focuses on public art. In this program, teens are paid artists working to create art and bridge cross-generational connections in the community through storytelling. Take a listen to these powerful stories!

El Barrio: Community Across Borders -- Ms. O'Hearn's class

What is security? When, where and why do we feel secure or insecure? Students in Ms. O'Hearn's class wrote about security in all of its forms, from the feeling that comes from your family's support at home, to the feeling you get when your landlord promises to raise the rent, to the feeling you get when you witness violence on the street. Students found security to be a relative and temporary concept. They then explored the experiences that shaped their perception of security through radio diaries.

This year, ZUMIX Radio is collaborating with English as a Second Language students at East Boston High School to produce El Barrio: Community Across Borders. The project will explore how community shapes personal identity -- first through discussion in class, then writing, then sharing on the radio. Radio provides a medium to archive these important personal stories, while allowing students to process and listen to their collective experience of migrating to the United States. Seven ESL classes will be participating, from October to April, and their final products will be shared here. Thank you to all of the students, who shared bravely and listened with compassion. Thank you also to our musical collaborators, Geko Lopera of RBN Raw Music and C-Kan, and ZUMIX beatmakers -- Justin Garcia, Chris Martinez, Sebastian Jaramillo and Dan Gentilucci.

Que es la seguridad? Cuando, donde y porque nos sentimos seguros o inseguros? Los estudiantes en la clase de Ms. O'Hearn escribieron sobre la seguridad en todas sus formas, desde el sentimiento que viene del apoyo familial, al sentimiento que viene de la promesa del dueño de casa cuando promete aumentar la renta, al sentimiento que viene cuando se ve la violencia en la calle. Los estudiantes encontraron la seguridad como un concepto relativo y temporal. Ellos luego exploraron las experiencias que formaron su percepción de la seguridad a través de los diarios de radio.

Este año, ZUMIX Radio esta colaborando con estudiantes de Ingles como Segundo Idioma en East Boston High School para producir El Barrio: Community Across Borders. El proyecto explorará como la comunidad da forma al identidad personal -- primero a través de la discusión, luego la escritura, y finalmente el compartir por la radio. La radio provee un medio para archivar eses importantes cuentos personales, mientras invitando a los estudiantes procesar y escuchar a su experiencia colectiva del emigración a los Estados Unidos. Siete clases de Ingles como Segundo Idioma participarán, desde octubre a abril, y sus proyectos finales serán compartidos aquí. I have big dreams, like to have a better future and to work hard so that I can achieve that. One of my dreams is to be a psychologist and to be admired by my family. I feel insecure where I live, because the owner of our apartment says everyday that we have to leave the apartment, but we have nowhere to go. I feel insecure, because we could have to live in the street. I feel scared that we might have to live in the street. Also, my neighbor is nasty. Everyday, he says many things to me, like, “You are a doll” or “You are very beautiful.” I’m scared, because every weekend, he has a party. The music is really loud, and it keeps me awake until eleven or twelve at night.

My hope is to never give up. Sometimes people tell me that I can’t do what I want, but I don’t care what they say about me, because my mind and my soul tell me I can do whatever I want. It does not matter if it is easy or hard. I try to be happy and always say that I can. My dream is to be successful.
In my opinion, the sense of security in East Boston isn’t very good. I don’t like West Eagle Street very much. One time, I was walking there and a man followed behind me, smoking with his friends. To me, East Boston is really dangerous. One time, several guys followed my mom in the morning. Also, many times the gangs confuse you with a bad person. This is bad. I don’t feel secure, because I work at night. I leave work with my uncle and a friend, but still, I don’t feel too safe. I leave sometimes at one in the morning. It depends on what time the last client leaves.

En mi opinión, la seguridad en East Boston no es muy buena, porque en la calle de West Eagle, no me gusta mucho. We always need more police in each place for more security. When a gangster looks at the police, he doesn’t do anything like robbing or killing, because he’s fearful of the police. I feel safer in the United States than in Colombia, because when I lived in my country, I felt like that, because the police in the United States are serious, and in my country, the police don't really have control most of the time. This country has more control, that can be good or bad, because everything is a problem in this country, but this also protects me from making problems.

Sometimes I feel confused when this country speaks about immigration. This year, I am scared, because Donald Trump might have the opportunity to go to the White House. I identify with all immigrants, because I am an immigrant. The problem is that immigrants do too much for this country and this country needs the immigrant, because they are an important part of this country. They work, and they contribute so much for this country. Everybody knows the United States is one country where immigrants have a powerful voice. People cannot go back to their countries for obvious reasons. When they come to the United States, they come for work. I give all permission to the immigrant police to deport immigrants when they come to use drugs or steal or do bad things, because the United States is a really good country, where you have all opportunities. Here, we need good people, not people who come to do nothing.
The problem in East Boston High School is the security. In my opinion, the security is really bad. Security here focuses more on our uniforms, headphones and other things that are not really important. The police need to check the bathroom, because the other students go to smoke and they disrespect other students. The bad students affect my health. I go to the bathroom and smell drugs and I feel angry. Why is this happening in school? How are they doing this? They are 18 years and older. The problem is the students. They come to school only to be disrespectful and to do nothing productive in class. And the teachers make problems, because other students disrespect me. A better idea would be to expel this student, who is coming to school only to disrespect. I understand that the police of the school cannot expel a student, but they can talk to the government about it, and they can expel the student to make order in the school. Sometimes talking doesn’t work. It is not enough to just talk. I deserve a better school culture.

A veces me siento confundido cuando este país habla de inmigración. Este año me siento nerviosa porque Donald Trump tiene la oportunidad de ir a la Casa Blanca. Me siento identificado con los inmigrantes, porque soy inmigrante. Los inmigrantes vienen a contribuir a este país, y contribuyen mucho. Todo el mundo sabe que los inmigrantes tienen una voz poderosa en este país. Y ellos no pueden volver a sus países por razones muy obvias. Cuando ellos vienen a los Estados Unidos, vinimos a trabajar. Estoy de acuerdo que hay unos inmigrantes que tienen que ser deportados cuando no vienen a hacer nada productivo a este país, como consumir drogas, robar o hacer malas cosas que no deberían hacer, porque los Estados Unidos es un país que tiene muchas oportunidades para las personas que las saben aprovechar. Los Estados Unidos necesita buenas personas, no personas que vienen a hacer nada.
El problema en East Boston High School es la seguridad. En mi opinion, la seguridad es muy mala. Seguridad en East Boston High School se enfoca más en los uniformes, los audífonos y en otras cosas que no son importantes. Las policías necesitan chequaer los baños, porque otros estudiantes van a fumar y irrespetan a otros estudiantes. Los malos estudiantes afectan a mi salud. Yo voy a los baños a oler las drogas. Me siento enojado. Porque esto pasa en la escuela? Como esto pasa en la escuela? Ellos son dieciocho años de edad. El problema es estos estudiantes. Ellos vienen a la escuela para irrespetar y no hacer nada productivo, a dar los problemas a los maestros, y otros estudiantes a irrespetar. La mejor idea es expulsar a estos estudiantes, que no vienen a hacer nada a la escuela, y solo vienen a irrespetar. Entiendo que la policía no pueda expulsar a estos estudiantes, porque el gobierno no lo permite, pero ellos pueden hablar con el gobierno para expulsarlos o darlos un buen castigo que haga el cambio. A veces hablar no funciona.

I am in high school, learning many new things, and I have come to the United States, because here there are many opportunities. I would like to achieve my goal of becoming a pilot of a commercial airplane. On summer afternoons, I go to Constitution Beach to watch the planes on the runway. The sound of an airplane engine excites me. When I am in control of a 787 Boeing, I will feel the air and the vibration of the plane. I feel enthusiastic about earning a pilot’s license.
I feel safe when I am at home, because my parents are with me and they tell me good advice about good things and bad things, to follow a good path and not pick a bad path. I think that the good path is to go to church and do new things for my future. The bad path is when you are smoking drugs, drinking alcohol or beer and joining gangs.

I love the food from my country, like the pupusas and other things. I love baseball. I love to spend time with my friends, to go out to eat or to go shopping. I like being honest with people. My favorite pastime is to be with my son, to play with my little guy. It fascinates me to see him when he smiles, because when I look at him, I think that I want to be his example to continue forward in life. I want him to always feel me by his side and I want him to grow up healthy. This is what I ask of God everyday – that my son is a good child and hopefully grows up to achieve his desires and goals.
I do not feel safe in the apartment where we live with my family, because there are only four rooms, but recently my sister in law arrived to live with my brother, and the owner of the building says that there are too many people and that we have to leave. And because of that, I don’t feel safe, because it’s really difficult to find large and inexpensive apartments. The owner says that when we find an apartment we have to leave, or if not, the rent will increase. The owner also is saying that there are many kids in the apartment, but there are only my sister’s two kids and my son.

I think security is when your parents help you when you have a problem. For example, if you have a problem with gangs, they tell you to call the police to report them. Sometimes, my parents give me advice, depending on what problems I have. I feel safe with my parents, because they want the best for me. Sometimes my mother wakes me up to go to school, even when I don’t want to go. She believes in me.

I like most parts of the food in this country, but my favorite is to eat salads, jejeje. In my country, the typical food is the pupusa, but I prefer to eat salads, because they are healthier for us. One of my goals is to be professional, but I’m still unsure about what career I would like to choose. One possibility is to be an architect or a mechanic, and another is to travel to Spain to meet people with new beliefs and cultures and to meet my crush, who is now one of the most important people for me. It’s a girl and I want to meet her, share time and experience fun adventures together. And then maybe I would fall in love. She is fifteen and so far from me, but I know that when it comes to love, borders don’t exist. Maybe I am going too fast to want to be together with her, but I know that I can reach my dream to meet her. So, two years ago, I got the privilege to participate in a radio project with ZUMIX. But this time, I want to do my best and try to show some of my new skills and my ability to speak English.
To me, I think that we feel bad and insecure, because sometimes students use drugs in the bathrooms of the school. Sometimes they are affected, and we are in trouble when they are crazy, use drugs and want to fight with other students. Sometimes they talk, and the bathrooms smell too bad, like marijuana. I think the police here should protect us. One of the pieces of advice I have to help prevent this issue would be to check each student to see if they have drugs in his bags, or something to hurt other students. If the police inspect each student, the result would be so good, because we could prevent many accidents or problems. I feel protected in my house, because my mother is there, and I am not alone.

Me gusta la mayor parte de comida que hay aquí en este país. Mi comida favorita son las ensaladas. En mi país, la comida típica son las pupusas, pero prefiero comer las ensaladas, porque son más saludables para nosotros. Una de mis metas es ser profesional, pero estoy inseguro a que carrera coger. Una posibilidad es ser arquitecto o mecánico, y la otra es viajar a España y conocer los nuevos tipos de personas y culturas y conocer a la persona que me gusta, la persona más importante para mi. Es una persona que quiero conocer y compartir momentos y experiencias juntos. Hace dos años tuve el privilegio participar en ZUMIX, pero en este tiempo quiero demostrar todas mis nuevas habilidades que he aprendido con tiempo hablando ingles.
Para mi, yo pienso que nos sentimos mal y inseguros, porque los estudiantes están usando drogas en los baños. A veces ellos están afectados y se podrían estar en problemas cuando están locos, usando drogas y queriendo luchar con otros estudiantes. A veces, los baños apestan mucho a marihuana, y la policía que esta aquí para protegerlo a uno, uno de los consejos que yo daría para prevenir estas catástrofes seria chequear cada estudiante si andan drogas en sus maletas o algo para herir a otras estudiantes. Si la policía inspeccionara a cada estudiante el resultado seria muy bueno, porque ayudaría a prevenir accidentes y problemas. Y yo me siento muy seguro en mi casa, porque siempre esta mi mama conmigo, y nunca me siento solo.

Ms. Ballou's students were interested in how to continue with their education after high school. The students learned about commentaries, a means of fusing a piece of news with personal perspective, and applied this radio format to discuss current legislation in progress that would offer in-state tuition to undocumented students. Students responded to this article, published by WBUR about the Student Immigrant Movement's active involvement in this legislation.

La clase de Ms. Ballou estaban interesados en como continuar con su educación después de la high school. Los estudiantes aprendieron sobre el comentario, una manera de juntar algún noticia con la perspectiva personal, y aplicaron este formato de radio para discutir la legislación en camino que ofrecería la misma matricula a la universidad para los estudiantes indocumentados como la de los residentes del estado. Los estudiantes respondieron a este artículo, publicado por WBUR sobre el rol activo del Movimiento de Inmigrantes Estudiantiles en esta legislación.

Este año, ZUMIX Radio esta colaborando con estudiantes de Ingles como Segundo Idioma en East Boston High School para producir El Barrio: Community Across Borders. El proyecto explorará como la comunidad da forma al identidad personal -- primero a través de la discusión, luego la escritura, y finalmente el compartir por la radio. La radio provee un medio para archivar eses importantes cuentos personales, mientras invitando a los estudiantes procesar y escuchar a su experiencia colectiva del emigración a los Estados Unidos. Siete clases de Ingles como Segundo Idioma participarán, desde octubre a abril, y sus proyectos finales serán compartidos aquí. My experience here in East Boston is good, because I’m never lacking anything. My mom is here with me, and my little sister and my stepfather are with me too. They always help me with what I need. They give me hope to continue forward in my life. I came with the purpose to do better in the future. I want a car and a job. My mom always helps me. I only feel bad, because I don’t have my father and my other sister with me here, and I want to have them here.
I think that the government may choose to help undocumented students, because they will be the people of the future and they too deserve college, as much as citizens of Massachusetts. If they help me to get my diploma, with a scholarship, I would be so grateful, because I want to be a nurse in the army. They will benefit from my service, because I will be serving the government and my community.

When I came, my family worried a lot, because they didn’t want me to come. They told me that I didn’t no about life here in America, and I told them that I was going to come to help them and continue forward with things in my life. In America, thanks to God, I am achieving my dreams. I’m studying, and thanks to God, I am learning English. My family is happy, because here in America, I don’t have any bad habits. Since I left Honduras, I’ve said that I will help my family. I am studying in East Boston and I’m learning a lot of English and math, and I’ve learned a lot about how life is in America.
My opinion is that some undocumented students can’t study in Massachusetts, and many people who have documents are supporting them, so that they can enroll in school in Massachusetts. Some students who have received support have been able to fulfill their desire to go to college. I agree with those who have documents supporting those without documents. For them it’s very difficult to do it alone, because they cannot enroll alone. They are minors and still cannot sign to apply to college alone. I applied to study at college to be able to be an engineer.

Algunos estudiantes que han recibido el apoyo han podido lograr su deseo de llegar a la universidad. Yo estoy de acuerdo con los que tienen documentos que ellos están apoyando a los que son indocumentados. Para ellos es muy difícil hacerlo solos, porque no pueden matricularse solos. Each day, I wake up at six in the morning to go to study at the high school. I like the classes that I have, but it is difficult for me, because I don’t know much English, because I barely just arrived from El Salvador. It’s because of that that my classes are difficult. After leaving school, I go to my house, where I order food or make it myself. In the afternoons, I get ready to do what I love most: play soccer. I like to walk through the park to get to the soccer field, and I like East Boston a lot, because there are a lot of Salvadorians. I returned to see many friends, who I hadn’t seen in a long time, and I returned to my family. This makes me happy, even though I’m not accustomed yet.
My opinion is that each immigrant minor, who enters the country as an immigrant, has the complete right to study in school, and after in college. But because the majority of immigrants are of few resources, even though they want to continue studying, they do not have the money necessary to go to university. That’s where immigrants are putting pressure on the state government to help. On one hand, it is good, but then again, no. It would be better to lower the cost of tuition to enroll in college.

Pero así como la mayoría de inmigrantes son de escasos recursos, a pesar de que quieran seguir estudiando, no tienen el dinero necesario para ir a la universidad. Es donde los inmigrantes presionan al estado o gobierno para que los ayuden. Por una parte esta bien, pero a las ves no, y seria mejor que bajan el costo de las matriculas para entrar a la universidad.

The community of East Boston is really nice. It has a good school, and apart from that, I like the security we have in school. And not only in school, but also in the whole community of East Boston. The majority of people feel safe living here.
I think that it’s really good that the cost of college may drop, because as such, many undocumented students would have the opportunity to study if the tuition was not so high. The majority of undocumented people who immigrate to this country come from poor families, who don’t have good finances. Even more, their migration status prevents them from entering college. I would like to have more information about how to enroll in college, like the cost of tuition. The truth is that I am missing a lot of information about college, like what degree I could take and at which college.

The school in East Boston is great for learning English. There are many teachers who speak Spanish and explain what you don’t understand, by which you can learn a lot about how to speak, write and understand.
I think the government should give more support to young people, who want to study and pursue their goals. For example, if the government gives me a little help, I want to fulfill my dream of being a cop. By fulfilling this dream, I would have a better future and be able to work for this country. In order to be a police officer, I have to finish college.

I don’t like East Boston, because its dangerous. There are bad people, who have killed people recently. I like it, because the school is very good. I like studying, because I have friends here and the teachers are great. I like how I learn in this school. Also, I like it, because here I am studying, and in El Salvador I couldn’t, because it was so dangerous. I feel happy, because I only have two years left of high school. When I finish high school, I will be able to study to be a cosmetician and be able to have a job that I like.
Through this bill, all students may receive financial support, to be able to study at any university in Massachusetts. Maybe they want to study at college, but because of the down economy or because of their immigration status, they can’t get help. I think that its very good that universities would provide in-state tuition to immigrant students, because maybe the parents of these students don’t have many resources. This help will be very good for these students and their families. Sometimes some students leave college, because they cannot pay for the college and their families do not have the resources to help them. Sometimes some of these students come seeking a better future for their lives. Some want to go to college and have big dreams to have a profession, but they have no money to pay for college.

There are a lot of Salvadorians in East Boston, and I like that a lot. I came to this country for a better future, and also because in my country, there are many gangs. My friends, everyone who I studied with in El Salvador, everyone is already dead. They were forced to join gangs. I like East Boston, because by studying, you can better yourself and get a good job. My goal is to do well in the States and improve myself. I feel insecure sometimes, because at night, it’s dangerous. Two times people have robbed me of my money and they’ve killed several guys.
The legislature is working to lower the cost of tuition, and if this weren’t the case, it would affect about 20,000 students in Massachusetts. 200 people filled a room, most young people, and they supported the laws supported by Denise Provost and Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz in Boston. I agree with supporting the senators so that they can do something for all of us to reduce the cost of entrance to college. We have to support them in order the lower the cost of entrance. This would benefit me, because if they are successful, I would have easier access to experience higher education, in order to be a lawyer or an engineer.

La asamblea legislativa esta en camino para bajar el costo de la matricula que sea un menor precio, y si eso no fuera así, eso puede afectar a unos 20,000 estudiantes en el estado de Massachusetts. 200 personas llenaron una sala, casi todos jóvenes, y apoyaron las leyes patrocinadas por Denise Provost y la senadora Sonia Chang-Diaz en Boston. Estoy de acuerdo a apoyar a los senadores para que ellos puedan hacer algo por todos nosotros a reducir el costo de entrada a la universidad. Hay que apoyarlos para bajar costos de entrada a la universidad. Esto me beneficiaria a mi, porque si lograran hacer eso, yo tendría un acceso mas fácil a realizar estudios superiores, como para ser un abogado o un ingeniero.

I would like to count on the help of the government to be able to fulfill my goals and be able to pursue one of two options that I’d like to study, either to be a teacher or a secretary. Well, my biggest dream is to receive a diploma and have a job that improves my life with my own efforts, and to be an example for all who are immigrants. A mi, me gustaría contar con la ayuda del gobierno para poder cumplir mis metas y poder sacar una de mis dos opciones que me gustaría estudiar, como para maestra o secretaria. Pues, mi mayor sueño es sacar un carrera y tener un trabajo para salir adelante con mis propios esfuerzos, y ser un ejemplo para todos los que somos inmigrantes. El Barrio: Community Across Borders -- Ms. Hubbell's class

Ms. Hubbell's class focused on two different formats of writing: the personal narrative and the Sonic ID. In each recording, you will first hear a Sonic ID -- a short audio portrait, whose concept was developed by Atlantic Public Media -- about the student's favorite place in East Boston, or a person or item in their life. The second segment recounts a personal narrative, describing the student's memory of their migration to the United States.

This year, ZUMIX Radio is collaborating with English as a Second Language students at East Boston High School to produce El Barrio: Community Across Borders. The project will explore how community shapes personal identity -- first through discussion in class, then writing, then sharing on the radio. Radio provides a medium to archive these important personal stories, while allowing students to process and listen to their collective experience of migrating to the United States. Seven ESL classes will be participating, from October to April, and their final products will be shared here. Thank you to all of the students, who shared bravely and listened with compassion. In my community, I like the laundromat, because it is hot and I like to go to wash the clothes. And because it is organized and there is a TV.
My arrival here wasn’t as good as we say. When we arrived at the airport, nobody was waiting for us. My dad didn’t come for us, and the only one who helped us was a man that we met on the airplane. We felt really bad, because we were here alone. We came here, because my mom wanted to be with my dad. But in my life, I don’t know what it is to have a dad. I didn’t want to come, because I have my two brothers and my two newborn cousins in Colombia. And well, I wanted to stay there. After eight days of being here, problems started with my dad and his family. Anyway, everything is changing. We are living alone. We never ended up knowing anything about him or his family.

I came to be with my mom, but I don’t like being with my mom, because she doesn’t know me like my grandmother, and I don’t like Boston, because people only spend time in their houses. They don’t leave to get to know where they live. Where I lived, I knew everything, but I talked to my mom on the phone and she told me that Boston was really beautiful. I thought and I thought and I didn’t say anything to her, but I was worried because El Salvador is really violent. There are many gangs. One week, she called and I said yes, but that day, I cried, because I love my grandparents.

In my community, I like the train station. I like the order of the people and the culture of the people. I like the color of the blue train – it is beautiful. And it is hot. My preferred station is Orient Heights, because it is new and I live close to this station.
My arrival to the United States was a little hard, because my family and I had a problem in Miami. My family and I came here because of violence, so we had to ask for protection here in the United States, so that they would help us set out on a new life. It’s something very traumatic for me. I don’t feel good about it, because we left my country for an unjust reason. I would like to be there, but my mind is destroyed. I left a life in my country to start new things here. This is not easy. My brother, my parents and I are not psychologically well, because our past in Colombia, its nothing easy. Although I miss my country, I wouldn’t be capable of returning to live there. Here, I like it a lot. Not only because I’m already far from so many problems and my family and I are protected, but also because I know that I will have a good future. I will have a good job and my brother too. We will help our parents a lot too.

Well, I never thought about or wanted to come to this country, but it presented me an opportunity to have a future for myself. It was the first time that I travelled by plane, and something happened that I wasn’t hoping for. [Not recorded: I fell asleep in the plane. When we were landing in Boston, I woke up and the flight attendant asked me if I had done something in Miami, before coming to Boston. “No,” I told him, “no.” So then they put me on a stretcher and they held me for two hours and then took me to the hospital. They did several tests on me, because they believed that I had some substance inside my body. Then, my relatives arrived to pick me up and I left the hospital. From there, I’ve been with a part of my family. Here I am better than in Colombia. I speak everyday to my parents, who live in Colombia.

Me hicieron unos examines, porque ellos creían que tenia una sustancia adentro de cuerpo. Ya llegaron mis familiares y me recorrieron, y salí del hospital. They are very beautiful, and it was really great -- the experience of boarding the boat and getting really wet and seeing the falls close up. I like going to the beach, but not to go in the water, only to the sand. I like a lot of things from this country, and the opportunities that I have for my life to keep moving forward.

Now, I am studying at East Boston High School. In the beginning, when I first came to the United States, I was feeling sad, because I wasn’t with my family. What I missed the most were my cousins, who are my reason for being here. I came here to help my family and to be able to finish my studies.

When I was fifteen years old, I had an obsession with coming to the United States. And that’s how it was; I came. It was difficult to leave part of my family, but I also wanted to see my mom, who I had not seen for fifteen years. In fact, I didn’t know her. When we were crossing the river, migration officials poked a hole in the inflatable boat that brought us. Someone grabbed me and held me in detention for about one month, then sent me to Boston in an airplane, where my mom and brothers and all of my family was waiting. My mom was crying, and I was too. All the time without my mom in El Salvador was difficult. It’s that you are missing the love of your mother. I said that it was helpful that my mom sent me money, but what I wanted was to be able to hug her and have her close by. So, when I arrived, my mom and I saw each other quickly, and we hugged each other, and everything in my life changed.

The book is about the story of a person, about what happens to him and what marks his life -- with many thoughts and bad memories about what has happened to him. These types of book are what call my attention. If one night I couldn’t read my book, I would feel like something was missing. When I was fourteen and fifteen years old, I decided to take a trip as my fifteenth birthday present that would bring me directly to the United States. All of this has happened with a mixture of emotions and nerves, with happiness and sadness. In the end, I have to accept all of this. As a conscious person, I should have known what consequences this transition was going to bring me. Now, I live with my dad, my grandparents and two aunts. Also, I miss my mom. I am aware that my future is here. I can progress and achieve what I want to achieve.

Every morning, my stepfather wakes me. I don’t like that he wakes me. I feel really annoyed that he wakes me up. But I understand why he wakes me up, because he’s going to work. Then, my stepbrother spends a lot of time in the bathroom, so I stop being annoyed.
My arrival to the United States happened in a city in Florida. I stayed in Florida for two months. After that, I went to a city in Pennsylvania. After staying about 20 days in Pennsylvania, my mom wanted to come to the city of Boston. Already here in Boston, we’ve stayed one year and four months. But still, I’m not accustomed to the community of Boston, because here, I don’t have much family. Also, a lot of things happen which aren’t safe, when you walk in the streets. Something can happen to you. But sometimes I think that, yes, I wanted to come here to Boston. I have to get used to it, because I have my mom here, and now, my boyfriend. I know that he and my mom are the family that I have here. All of my family is in the Dominican Republic. Although I can still go, I haven’t gone, because my mom wants me to go in the summer. But I want to go in December, because I really miss my grandmother and the rest of my family. But I have to wait until summer to go to my country to see my family.

The countryside is beautiful, but the music is different. The dancing is different. Its totally new for me to have to learn a new language, and everything is hard for me. Greg shared insight about how he found himself exploring jazz, what it was like to play alongside Ray Charles, and his impressions of Big Ben during his recent musical trip to London. El Barrio: Community Across Borders

Nineteen English as a Second Language (ESL) students from East Boston High School recorded their own radio reflections last week, as a part of ZUMIX's third installment of our Across Borders project. This year, six classes will be discussing the themes of community and identity -- while learning english and processing their migration experiences. Hear a sneak peak of the students' work below. We'd like to say a big thank you to Meredith Hubbell and all of her students.

La semana pasada, diecinueve estudiantes de Ingles como Segundo Idioma en East Boston High School grabaron sus propios cuentos de radio, como parte del tercero episodio del proyecto Cruzando Fronteras. Este año, seis clases discutirán los temas de la comunidad y la identidad -- mientras aprendiendo ingles y expresando sus experiencias de migración. ZUMIX and Landmarks Orchestra Take on Improvisation

But that's just what Boston's Landmark Orchestra sought when it commissioned Brazilian composer, Clarice Assad.
