►This is a great spotting scope for the money. It has a nice field of view and excellent optics. I have used it for both birding and wildlife and find that it works equally well for both. It is minimally useful for celestial viewing. The included carrying case makes it convenient for field use and the lifetime waranty cannot be beat. Highly recommend.

►I use this scope on an almost daily basis for competive archery or for checking surf conditions at the beach. Easily assembled, water-proof and packing a lifetime warranty from Celestron in Torrance, CA the ultima 80 is a great scope for competive archery, shooting, nature & bird watching or urban sightseeing. I own both the straight and 45 degree angled model and have matched both with the Slik Pro 700DX AMT tripod that is rock solid stable and can easily hold 15 pounds with a detatchable quick release. An excellent combination for long range viewing in windy conditions. At 90 meters I can zoom in to just the gold ring on the target to refine my shots.

The scope itself is very well made, optically bright and forgiving for those of us who are very nearsighted and must wear glasses. The scope comes very well packaged with the eyepiece in its own small case inside the main box. Both lense caps are provided. An over the shoulder nylon case is also provided. These scopes provide excellent performance for the dollar. Enjoy!!!

►First, don't be fooled by the product image now offered by Amazon; this is indeed the model 728 with 45-degree eyepiece; Amazon pictures the similar model 725 with straight-through viewing. I use a spotting scope for birding, and I've been quite content with my trusty Bushnell Spacemaster (vintage 1992). But in preparation for a vacation that involves international airline flight I wanted a lightweight alternative. If I had unlimited financial resources I might have considered a few of the big-ticket products with impressive reviews, but money IS an object. But so is quality, and I knew I wanted a BAK-4 prism, multi-coated lenses (of course I would have preferred fully multi-coated), waterproof construction, compact design, light weight, and reasonably good close focus. The Alpen 728 specifications looked good, and I took a chance. I'm glad I did. This scope weighs less than two pounds, is quite compact, has a nice retractable sunshade, and delivers very good optical performance (especially when used in the range from 15X to about 30X). Light transmission is quite satisfactory below 30X, as is color rendition. I get a good sharp image. I can focus to less than 25 feet. The 18mm eye relief at 15X is quite sufficient for those of us who wear glasses, and even at 45X (with 15mm eye relief) it's still usable. The 45-degree eyepiece does facilitate shared viewing, and perhaps most importantly allows the use of a shorter tripod. I even like the threaded eyepiece cover. The cloth case is a nice touch; I'm not sure I'll ever use the tabletop tripod, but it looks like it would work for those who do use such a support. I'm not sure that sentiment will permit me me to replace the Spacemaster as my primary birding scope, but I feel quite confident that the Alpen 728 will see its share of use, even when airline travel isn't involved.

►I purchased this for fita archery too, but also use it for stargazing. The image gets a little dark past 30x and color isn't as great, but at 15x on a bright sunny day the image can be too bright. I can see through it clearly with sunglasses on, so you don't have to stick your eye right on the eyepiece, this may be why I think that it starts to get dark past 30x, probably still bright without sunglasses on past 30x. Can focus to as close as twenty feet. Great scope for the money.

►I bought the Ultima 80ED spotting scope for a trip to Yellowstone this fall. Both my wife and I are glad we had it along. It offered nice crisp views of grizzlies, pronghorn, and bald eagles. This is my first spotting scope so I don't have anything to compare it to but it seemed to perform very well for a medium priced scope. I paid about $400 for it. People that we let take a look though it were also impressed. In fact one comment was "we gotta get one of these". This is not my first Celestron product. I also have one of their 8" SC telescopes. My only beef about the Ultima 80ED is that there is NO eyepiece cover. Come on Celestron, I think you've been at this optics game long enough to know to include a 2-cent piece of plastic on a scope that lists for $870.

►I purchased this scope to used at the range to view my 100 yard rifle targets. I spent many hours looking over spotting scopes and reading reviews on the Internet, before selecting this Bushnell Nature View scope. The main reason this scope was selected was its extended eye relief feature, a necessary item for me, as I wear glasses ALL the time.
I set the scope on 20X power, and focus in on my target. At 100 yards, .30 caliber bullet holes are clearly visible.
This is a compact, well built, quality scope, at a very attractive price. If you are looking for a range spotting scope, this model should more than meet your needs, and do so at an affordable price.

►I wear eye glass all the time and need a scope with ultra long eye relief. After some research on internet, I got this scope which appears to have the longest eye relief within my budget. This scope also has some positive reviews on amazon and other bird watching websites.
As expected, the scope has a extra long eye relief that can makes me comfortable using the scope with eye glass on. Besides that, the scope is well builted and the field of view is wider than I expected. I got the scope more than five years ago, and it still working perfectly besides some exterior scuff I made when it falling from the tripod. Even after the falling,the image quality of this scope is still as good as my old Nikon scope. It would be better if this scope has splash proof version. But again, for the price, you can't beat it. This is a quality scope for those bird watching beginner that can't live without eye glasses.

►I just purchased this spotting scope based on other reviews. I like the optics of the product but the tripod is next to worthless. The unit rocks in the tripod scope cradle and does not seat well. I will be looking to replace the tripod so factor this into the cost of the unit.

As I said the optics are very good. I have worked with the unit up to full magnification with no distortion across the glass.

Tripod: good tripod for spotting and window attachment works great.

►I bought this scope to check my shooting in the pistol yard at 25 meters using standard ISSF targets. Even the little holes made with a .22 bullet are visible with this nice scope. Previously I used a 10x monocular but it was not a big help. I am really happy with this purchase.

►What a pleasant surprise. For years, I've watched other guys lug around these bulky, 5 to 10-pound spotting scopes in suitcases so they can see if their bullets hit the bullseye at 100yds. After reading a few positive reviews, I opted to give this pint-size scope a try. It is a definite winner! It focuses easily and is as clear as any scope I've ever used. It is a straight view as opposed to the scopes with eye pieces that angle upward toward the eye. This product is a rare combination of bargain price and quality. The tripod is also good quality. This scope comes with a nylon carrying case that fits nicely into the side pocket, end up, of my SMALL range bag - and it only takes up half of the pocket at that. I hang my ear protectors over the portion sticking up. This way you don't have to start unzipping and digging into your bag for ear protectors (MANDATORY) before entering an indoor range. It weighs less than one box of some ammunition or a brick of .22LR.

►The scope is very sharp and bright at the lowest magnification 15X,right through the highest 45X. It is light weight and small enough to easily carry all day.

I was looking at a pine tree about 100 yards away and at full power 45X I could easily make out detail on individual pine cones. If you are looking for a good scope where you need a lot of detail, such as birding you won't be disappointed.

I purchased a "cheaper" scope for under $200 that had higher magnification and a larger lens,80mm,and was so disappointed by the poor image quality that I returned it for this one. The old saying "you get what you pay for" definitely applies here. Spend he extra $100, get the Loupold (one of the best names in scopes), and you can pass it on to your kids some day.

►Excellent optics, bright, sharp, and satisfying. Construction and finish are superb, too. Love the smooth, non-glare coating on metal surfaces. I should deduct a half point for the eyepiece collar which can't stay in the non-glasses mode--keeps spiraling to the base position after a minute or two.

►I got just what I was asking for on my birthday. A beutiful wildlife spotting scope. Alas just one thing was missing, the soft case the ad said it came with. Barska was contacted and they said a scope of that size does not come with a soft case. They said the ad was generic daaa!!
so think twice before you buy something from Barska. The scope is very nice but the advertisment is VERY WRONG.

►I ordered this for a birthday gift. My husband wanted both a hard and sort carrying case. Barska advertises this item as coming with A tripod, soft case ,premium hard case and the scope for a certain amount of money but when it arrived alas no soft case . when I contacted barska directly they informed me that they make generic descriptions !!!!
even though I paid for all 4 items they say they dont even make a soft case to fit this size scope!! how nice for them to make generic descriptions maby my money could be generic, perhaps they will accept monoply money next time!! Amazon did credit me 15.00 for my trouble but the supervisor from barska has never contacted me as they promised.

►This spotting scope seems to be very good for the money, it feels good and solid. The power is pretty impressive as well. 60x magnification sounds like a lot, but its so much more than you realize...

My only complaint is that there is no rubber eye peice. It does not have rubber peices contoured to your face like binoculars do.

A minor complaint really...
I have not taken it to the shooting range to try it out yet, though I have no doubt it will work excellent for my purpose.

Overall it was a great deal, good product, free shipping, $30 off (due to getting the amazon CC).

►Used it a few time on the shootingrange. In good light conditions the scope gives a very clear picture. In artificial light or in the shimmering, the picture becomes less clear. The tripod with the scope is of a poor quality. I replaced it with a new tripod from my local gun store.

►I recieved this scope about two days ago and I have been having a lot of fun with it. I live out in the country side where there are a lot of things to look at and this scope has allowed me to look at the Lords creations more closely and clearly! The tripod can get just a little unstable when viewing, but it's not a big deal. You also need a good amount of light to see things clearly at 60x, but the same applies with any scope you get. Save yourself the money and go for this scope. The overall image for from 20x-60x is excellent, especially if there is sufficiant light provided. The powerful laser also helps you find where to put the scope at close images.

►I originally bought a Raven from Eagle Optics. But I returned it. Raven was $400. It had poor eye relief and poor image quality but very good scope construction (housing, cordura case etc). I went to Cabela's and tried the usual high-end suspects as well as Meopta, and Cabela's ED (Big Sky?). Thought I was going to have to resign myself to spend the big bucks 'someday'. But, I persisted and stopped by Ryder Hobby shop 'just to check it out'. Am glad I did. The Celestron Ultima 80 gave me the 'wow' factor I thought I was going to see in Raven and only saw in the highest end scopes. Well made, crisp images, you cannot beat it for the price. As good if not better than the Cabela's ($700) scope. I can recommend it. Bought it for $239. Also compared the C5 and other C90 scopes. Not nearly as good either. Would have been neat to check out the 80 ED, but they did not have it and it runs twice the price. I read all the same on-line reviews you probably have, and I can't figure out how this one did not figure much more prominently or how the Raven got such good reviews. Raven reminds me of my old Tasco binoc's. I'm very happy with the Celestron 80. Saw wood ducks, ring necks, Sand Hill Cranes all this evening approaching twilight with exceptional clarity. Even allows for T-ring mount for camera I read. Hope this helps.

►I have used this spotting scope for both sighting in a 22 rifle and for looking at eagles. I could see the the bullet holes in the white fine. Some of the holes in the black I could not see. This was at about 100 yds on a bright sunny day. At 100 yds I could get a decent image up to 75 power. Focusing on a fence pole at about 250 yds I could get a decent image all the way to 125 power.

With the included hand grip on the scope I was pleasantly surprised by how well I could see and follow flying eagles.

This scope is well worth the money.

►I have used the scope at the range and at work. Up to about, 75power it performs well but after that, the optics take a nose dive. I understood I wasn't buying a top dollar spotter but I had expected better quality than I received. I needed a spotter scope for target shooting in the 500 to 1000 yard range if this scope held its clarity to full power it would have worked but with the 75 fall off point, it fell short.

►I coach a high school air rifle team and was looking for an inexpensive shooting scope when I came across this little gem. While the name sounds vaguely eastern European, this scope is actually made in China. The scope has a lightweight but sturdy fiber-reinforced composite body and a back housing that is encased in a generous layer of rubber for shock protection. A hard plastic cap screws on to protect the eyepiece and a hard plastic dust cover friction fits into the front to protect the objective lens. An extendable sunshade is a nice and useful touch.

The magnification is perfect for shooting competition targets at ten meters. (Be careful when comparison shopping as many spotting scopes won't focus down this close.) We use it at the lowest 18x power setting and can see the whole target sheet while still viewing the individual bullseyes and pellet holes clearly. Like nearly all inexpensive scopes, the higher power settings are less useful as the picture darkens considerably and distortion around the edges becomes apparent. If you are looking for a scope for long range shooting or viewing, one with a larger objective lens would probably be a better choice.

Eye relief is good. Many inexpensive and compact variable power scopes have either a very short eye relief or a small field of view in order to save on the cost of manufacturing the lens elements in the eyepiece. With this scope, you don't have to tickle the lens with your eyelashes in order the see the entire field of view.

The only knock that I have on this setup is with the case and tripod that come with the set. The case doesn't offer much protection and the tripod is too small and lightweight to be useful. But then again, our school was able to purchase four of these scopes for the same price as a single "name brand" shooting scope with similar features. While I can't vouch for its long term durability this scope is perfect for what we use it for. If it lasts for four seasons of shooting, I would consider it a great value.

Update 2-25-09: So far, so good! I would still recommend these spoting scopes. The scopes have held up well with no problems. We liked them so much, the school bought 15 more. We bought briefcase style, foam filled pistol cases to store them in and they work great. Three will fit in a standard four pistol gun case. We've taken them traveling with no problems. After two seasons, no cracks, leaks, fogging, misalignments, peeling or flaking.

I even found a use for the soft cases the scopes came in. The kids use them to store their shooting equipment including their slings, safety glasses, glove and other bric-a-brac.

It seems Amazon doesn't carry these anymore but a third party retailer still lists them. I haven't used them before so I can't attest to their customer service.

►I bought this primarily for the target range and I am very satisfied! It's larger than most spotters, but it has very good eye relief and flexability (eye piece). The only problem that I see is that the front lens cover does not have as tight of fit as I would have expected. The carrying case is a nice addition.

►I sure am not an expert and this is my first spotting scope, yet after doing the research and owning a pair of 8 x 42 Barska binoculars (I love) I pulled the trigger on this scope. I am delighted with it especially compared to its competition that is pricey. Here I feel it is a great bang for the buck scope. It is clear and stable and sees birds close(10M) as well as far (1 KM) for hawks. I even left the Gladiator out and while it was covered with rain and dew, a quick wipe off and no damage. The stand could be improved, but as for the scope I am very happy

►Let me start by saying that this scope looks the part when you get it. The 100mm lens is really something- creates a great big field of view and allows a lot of light in. The scope itself is sturdy and easy to operate. The tripod is kind of cheap, but not the worst-what do you exect? You get a nice nylon carrying bag as well.

The problem is this -it will not give you a real sharp close-up. I thought I could see real minute detail from 100 yards and you just don't. What you see from 100 you see about the same from a mile which is pretty good. The problem is it just doesn't magnify real super close. Maybe my expectations are too high. If you want to see super close detail you probably have to go to a $400+ scope. I also bought the adaptor for the camera and that is kind of a POS. It works, but if you put any presure on the button to take a picture this adaptor shakes like crazy. I would recommend buying a different adaptor.
