While I was waiting for a client (who never showed) for a zoom meeting, I drew a caricature of myself.

I wish I looked this cool in real life...

Samax's ART PARTY ROAD SHOW Continues

I forgot to share these Art Party pics from the store opening I worked in Fair Park last week!

They hired me for face painting, but no one was into it.

But my sign also offered Caricatures, and once people started getting them, I stayed busy the whole time!

It was SUPER COLD that morning, but it was one of the busiest store openings I've ever worked at!

This is the first store opening I worked for this client that was in a downtown area with lots of foot traffic, and they had a secret weapon:

A BOUNCE HOUSE!

Once I got started, I didn't have to talk people into the chair that much. There was always someone wanting to do it.

Most of the store openings I do are on farm to market roads in the middle of nowhere, but this one was in the hood, so I got to draw lots of black and brown people.

Like I said, that bounce house allowed people to deposit their kids and get a caricature, or watch me do one for someone else.

So there was always someone waiting in the wings.

That was a fun weekend. I worked a Valentine's party on Friday in Woodway, then drove up 35 North to do this one the next day.

Some of my best caricatures ever?

Hey fam,

I took my Art Party gear on the road again this weekend, this time for two caricature engagements.

Friday I worked a Valentine's Day Party at Central Presbyterian Church in Woodway,TX

My sister Carla helped me book the Valentine's Day party, so she got a free caricature!

Here's some more caricatures from the party:

The first couple shown here has FIVE DOGS at home, including three that they're temporarily fostering for friends. That's a lot of dog hair around the house!

Next we have a mother and son. He's a site manager at a golf course (but not much of a golfer, according to him). His mom is a retired teacher. Talking to her, it's clear that she loves teaching, but had enough of the bureaucracy.

Next we have a math professor and his eleven year old daughter. He was probably my favorite person to draw of the night.

The couple in red are newlyweds. A college administrator and an elementary school art teacher.

This nice lady was the church secretary, and this couple are the co-pastors of the church.

Spent my Saturday painting and drawing on faces

Hey fam,

One of my clients is a party promoter who books me for live events.

At his request, I added Face Painting to my Live Art Party arsenal in 2022, and he has had recurring work for me.

I took my Art Party gear on the road and painted faces at a store opening on Saturday.

We got off to a great start with this cutie pie...

Some of the openings are slow, but I have fun anyway.

This time, LOTS of kids showed up, so I stayed busy!

There were actually two separate vans of pre-teen basketball players that wanted those hand-pieces while their drivers were in the store. But I didn't get pictures of all of them, because they were in a hurry.

I was excited when this next kid asked me to paint the planet Saturn!

I mostly do cheek-pieces, because people are generally in a hurry. But my man wanted the American flag across his whole face, and I could not let him down!

You probably already knew I did caricatures. I have a Valentine's party coming up on the 10th. We'll see how that goes.

Cloud of Witnesses by Samax Amen

Last summer I quietly created the limited edition poster Cloud of Witnesses for the multimedia project El's Mirror from Hip Hop Grew Up.

Written by the son + father team of Ellison and Bavu Blakes, El's Mirror is a children's book about a boy whose magical mirror shows him great historical heroes who happen to look a lot like him. It's a great teachable metaphor for the power of passing on the accomplishments of our ancestors, culture, and forebears.

Bavu is one of my favorite rappers, so when he sent me a production copy of the book asked me to do this promotional poster in response to the book, I was so happy to be involved.

I make a lot of my money drawing Cartoon Portraits in comic book style. As more and more of my work is coming from business clients, things have gotten very interesting. One of my favorite small business clients has started their own sunglasses brand, Frescobar Eyewear.

We're still working some kinks out of this drawing, I'll color it and show you it to you again when it's done. If they make shirts or other merch for for sale, I'll let you know.

BiGS #4 is HERE!

I got my comp copies of BiGS #4 in the mail. BiGS is about the ways society changes when a mutation causes a small percentage of the human race to grow to sizes of 10 to 15 feet tall.

Khalid and I split art chores on this issue. In the page spread below you can see the handoff, with his art on the left and mine on the right. De Silva's colors really make it a smooth transition.

Character Bio of the Week- Doctor Helix

You know I LOVE making these Marvel Universe Handbook-style bios for my characters. Let's take a look at this bio for Doctor Helix, the mad scientist from MANCHILD.

I originally created MANCHILD in the early 2000s as a series of black and white hand-stapled 8 page minicomics that I sold at conventions and on my website.

After working as part of a team on an all-ages comic about child superheroes, I went crazy with MANCHILD creating an ultra-violent comic that included every idea that would never fly as part of a kids' comic. I love drawing kids being bad, so I did my best to go delightfully overboard with MANCHILD.

One of those ideas was a mad scientist posing as a fertility doctor that was not averse to child abuse.

I pledged that every cover would have Junior holding a gun or some other clue that it was not for kids, so that parents could not say that the cartoon style misled them.

MANCHILD has a fairly complex plot and a large cast of characters, but I kept it simple for the bio.
I published three 8 page chapters of MANCHILD while I was working in a call center.
Then the I improved and colored them and republished them in color as episodes of my magazine GhettoManga.

As my freelancing career has taken off (which is a good thing), I got sidetracked from making more comics (not so good). But I kept tinkering with the characters, their backstories, and their behind the scenes relationships.

I thought I would return to self-publishing last year, but 2020 had other plans.

Remember when you thought 2020 was gonna be awesome?

My plan was to do some short comics AND to release some old stuff as digital e-books, including MANCHILD. All that stuff went on the back burner. But I'm still on it, so stay tuned.

One of the compromises I made was to start making these bios as a tease to what my fans can look forward to.

It's helped me stay motivated too!!

Last week was one of those that had bad news and good news.

CONTENTS

Two Master Actresses Gone- The biggest news of the week for me was the passing of Cicely Tyson (this week's cover feature), but I was already reeling about the death of Cloris Leachman.
Weirdo Creative Summit 2021- I was on the panel at a cool virtual event centered around overcoming Comparanoia (compare + Paranoia) by being your authentic self. It was great!
NEXT LEVEL Freelancing Class- I am having a good time teaching my class on freelancing.

Comic Strip News- A familiar client reached out to me for a new Valentine's Day strip.

Two Master Actresses Gone

"I love everybody. That's what's killing me."
-Evelyn Wright (Cloris Leachman, Spanglish)
Cloris Leachman is one of those actors that can convince you to watch a movie you are on the fence about, just by being in the trailer. She won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar for her role in the 1971 drama "The Last Picture Show", and has more Emmy nominations than any other television actress, and is tied for the most wins.

To be fair, she cheated by being in the game for more than 70 years.

She played Phyllis Lindstrom on "The Mary Tyler Moore Show" and won a Golden Globe playing the character on a short-lived spinoff "Phyllis."
Leachman played in tons of movies and tv shows from "Young Frankenstein" to "The Facts of Life" to "American Gods", and as far as I can tell, she was always amazing.

Cloris died on a Wednesday. I found out about it Thursday morning.

I was moved to write about it, and by the time I shared my post on social media, news reached me that the venerated actress Cicely Tyson passed too.

After expending so much emotional energy writing about Cloris, I was stunned stupid by Cicely Tyson's passing.

I was at a loss for words.

If there was a more dignified human being to ever walk the Earth, I don't know who it could be.

I am not one of those artists that runs to the drawing board when a celebrity dies.

Not usually anyways. But in this case I drew this piece just to get out the energy.

I made the drawing available on printed stuff in my Teepublic shop and sent an email out to the subscribers who are into that stuff. I still don't have a lot to say about it.

I have nothing but her own words:

"Whatever good I have accomplished as an actress I believe came in direct proportion to my efforts to portray Black women who have made positive contributions to my heritage."

BiGS #4 is On Sale Now!

Last week I got an email from Upchuck Comics letting me know that the latest issue of BiGS (wherein a segment of the population has a genetic mutation that causes them to grow to heights of 10-15 feet tall) is available in their online store.

But before we peep the finished page, here's a little (spoiler-free) backstory:

In BiGS, the giants are an underclass subjected to poor diets, abysmal living conditions, slave wages, and more. Over-medicated and brainwashed, the "bigs" are generally docile and resigned to their role as second-class citizens dependent on and subservient to regular humans ("regs")

That is, until the emergence of Nate, a big who appears to be in perfect health, despite refusing to take the "dailies", a mandatory cocktail of meds that bigs take to correct the list health complications that come with their massive size.

Far from suffering any ill effects of neglecting the dailies, Nate has developed amazing strength, speed, and mental quickness that have made him a viral sensation... And a target of corporate and cultural interests that reap the benefits of keeping the bigs in thrall to the dailies.

BiGS is the brainchild of Bronte Erwin.

The first two issues were drawn my friend Khalid Robertson, and I was asked to help out by drawing #3 and the second half of #4.

A Boss From Hell Christmas

Hey, fam...

It's Christmas Day, so that means there's officially less than one week of 2020 left.

No matter how you feel about the holidays, that's definitely reason to celebrate!

But this year, the regular artist on J.R. LeMar's strip BOSS FROM HELL went AWOL, so J.R. turned to me for a quick holiday ditty.

This is technically my first time drawing BOSS FROM HELL, but I already drew these characters in the crossover episode of DJINNX where the Boss and his assistant Gilbert meet for the first time.

So it was a joy to work on this episode.

J.R. is a big fan of the venerable 3 panel wide strip we grew up reading in the newspaper funnies. I still love the format too, so I shared it here.

5 Ways to Overcome Confusion

I put this sketch (inspired while studying how to overcome confusion) on Teepublic

Life can get very confusing, very quickly. And confusion can be absolutely crippling when you're trying to make decisions.

If you're running a team that has no idea what their goal is.

If you can't agree with your significant other about the direction of the relationship.

If you're trying to sell a solution to a prospect who isn't sure how it is going to help her?

Confusion is the enemy of getting stuff done.

No two ways about it, fam!

Confusion sucks.

If you find yourself unwilling to act on your plans, it might be that you are confused about what to do next.

You need to pursue clarity.

I'm not an expert or anything, but here are a few suggestions.

Journal- Writing your own thoughts down and reading them is a great way to see when confusion has crept into your thoughts. In your journal, you can process your emotions and identify what matters to you. You take in others' opinions and thoughts all the time. Take a few minutes every day to get familiar with your own thoughts.
Take a break from TV, Corporate Radio, and Social Media- Media companies bombard us with advertising and reduce our attention span. Without meaning to, these messages sew confusion into us. Take a few days a month, or one day or so a week, to turn off the constant notifications and commercials.
Meditation- Like journaling, meditation is a great way to pursue clarity, because it helps you observe your own thoughts and emotions without judging. It also helps you to calm yourself when you get confused.
De-clutter- Your brain has to process everything you see. Living and working in a cluttered, messy environment actually effects your thinking.
Consult a physician- Confusion can actually be a symptom of a biological problem.

BiGs takes place in the near future, where environmental change has caused a mutation in a segment of the population who grow to 2 or 3 times the size of regular humans. It's a roller coaster ride that manages to address the ways that climate change, the petroleum industrial complex, and the nightmare that is American healthcare and big pharma disproportionately effect marginalized populations.

You know, when the marginalized populace averages ten to twelve feet in height.

The first two issues of BiGS have art by my good friend (and one fifth of the mighty GhostWerks crew) Khalid "Steelo" Robertson. I did artwork on issue three, and we split the art chores on the fourth issue, which is almost finished.

The Brother: Run, Alonzo, Run

Yeah... So in other news, the story of Jay Kelley's messianic African time-traveler continues to unfold. After being on the back burner's waiting list for years, I am working on The Brother: Run Alonzo, Run on a weekly basis.

Here's a panel I shared on the GhettoManga Facebook page last week.

This short story (many years in the making) will be completed this year.

That's as close as I can forecast it right now.

I've been operating under the assumption that Trump is a weak-minded narcissist who has fallen under the thrall of Putin. Trump's primary mission is to destabilize America's institutions.

The way he talks makes me think he uses (or tries to use) hypnosis on himself and his followers.

Every time I watch the clip of him saying these five words, it reminds me of the brainwashing in The Manchurian Candidate and Winter Soldier.

SUNDAY COMICS- Black Superheroes to the Rescue?

Are you doing okay, fam?

I have had kind of a rough week.

I have been SUPER BUSY, just trying to meet my income goals in this crazy economy, while also working hard to stay sane.

I am actually doing pretty well, to be honest. But I do spend a lot more time than usual talking to people lately.

I got a lot of stuff bubbling behind the scenes and what not, but I still have a few gems I can show you.

In a time when we are hearing a lot about (and fighting to improve) the black experience with law enforcement, my clients and I are over here creating comics and strips starring black superheroes...

The Brother: Run Alonzo, Run

I haven't been talking about it that much, but I recently returned to work on the LOOONG awaited collaboration with Jay Kelley called The Brother: Run, Alonzo, Run.

The Brother is an African time traveler who for some reason has taken an interest in notorious career criminal Alonzo Greer.

The resurrection of this story comes after a long hiatus, and both Jay and I are excited to see this story get told.

Here are a couple pages I completed last week. If you've been with me for a while, you've seen bits and pieces of these pages, but I'm excited to share the completed art with you here.

I'm creating Run Alonzo Run to be printed in black and white, but I'm also sharing versions of the pages colored by Rodney Jean-Etienne.

I can't say for sure when this short story will be finished, but I can say it will be this year.

Superheru part 3

I finally finished a new episode of J.R. LeMar's SUPERHERU on Thursday afternoon.

If you've checked out more of J.R.'s comics, you might recognize these guys from The Friends Zone, a strip J.R. does with Celina Hernandez.

J.R. loves to do crossovers so that fans can envision that all his strips take place in the same world. As someone who has known J.R. for a while now, I can say that it speaks to his interests in many genres, and his desire to do bigger stories.

BiGS#4 is almost done!

You might already know I'm also drawing a comic called BiGS for Upchuck Comics.

BiGS is not strictly a super hero comic, but rather a science fiction story about a world where environmental changes have caused a small percentage of the population to grow to giant sizes.

Unlike most of the "bigs" who have poor health requiring daily medication, Nate doesn't take the dailies, and has exhibited superhuman strength and speed.

This all makes Nate a natural enemy of the medical industrial complex and big pharma interests who would stand to lose multiplied billions if word gets out about him... which it has.

After being a fan of the series (a friend of mine is the regular artist), I was invited to do fill in art on issue 3.

Now I'm two pages away from completing art on #4. So stay tuned!

One of my Daily Sketches subscribers asked me what I do to stay level in unbalanced times...

1) Sketchbook therapy- I draw, and draw, and draw. Drawing can be very cathartic, even when I'm not drawing specifically about the issues that are bothering me. Of course, I also bring a lot of symbols and metaphors into my art, so not everything is what it seems in my sketchbook stuff.

2) Journaling- I also journal in notebooks like this one (obviously, I draw in it too). I think it's important (especially in the social media era) to write down and read back my own thoughts. I write down plans for the day, and sometimes I log what I am doing and thinking at different times of the day. It's very useful to be able to go back and try to understand what I was thinking and feeling in the past.

3) Keep On Bookin'- I also read a lot of books and listen to audiobooks. When I drew this, I was listening to an inspirational book called You² on YouTube (I am not sure how I feel about You², but that's not the point).

The thing about books, audiobooks, etc is that they take the place of having people to mentor me.

When I was young, I was always looking for mentors, but I have learned that sometimes, you have to settle for self-serve mentorship and peer-to-peer support.

4) Meditation- I know, I know... for me, the purpose of meditation is not transcendentalism, or even religious. It's just a way to get in touch with myself so I can differentiate between thinking and feeling. One of my mentors says the first important step is to "notice what you are noticing" about yourself.

Noticing without judging is an important part of choosing which of your thoughts and feelings you want to follow, instead of being a slave to triggers coming from the outside world.

A very nifty skill when the news and social media are dominated by unrest and tribalism.

Hey, fam...

We are living in some crazy times.

Pandemic. Riots. Police brutality.

I'm not gonna complain, though...

Right now I'm taking a break from drawing a flaming pig monster for money.

What do I have to complain about?

Seriously, though... I have been keeping super busy doing client work to try not to get too distressed by all the weirdness going on.

I am doing okay right now, but a lot of people are suffering. State-sponsored murder. Wrongful imprisonment. Rampant disease.

To be honest, it's all very upsetting. But I try to keep a cap on how emotional I let myself get, or else I will be no use to anyone.

I have time to talk if you need me, though, fam.

So don't suffer in silence or whatever. Okay?
