Zauber raises USD 1 million to power its Lab

Hooray! We are excited to announce that Zauber has raised USD 1 million in our first venture capital financing round !

Led by AxVentures - Pymar Fund, also an investor at Cupoint (a spin off from our Lab), the new funding will enable our company to expand our boutique high-end software development services in our target markets of Silicon Valley and Brazil, as well as heavily grow our investment in R+D and new products development at our Lab.

This is a huge achievement for Zauber, which reinforces our vision of building a company that combines the offer of high-end software development services with the incubation of new products and ventures.

Here's a little bit of our story:

Almost five years ago, six friends and graduates from ITBA (Gabriel, Juan, Mariano, Martín, Andrés and Fernando) got together with the idea of starting a new venture: a software technology company with a strong focus on R+D and innovation.

It was February 2007. We literally started as a garage company, with an old dark basement at one of our partner’s parents’ home serving as our office, and a ping-pong table serving as our desks. Three of the founders started the operations, while three other founders kept their jobs for some months funding with their salaries the living of all the six. Four months after the startup, we already had our first clients and we were making some humble revenue that we used to hire our first two employees (Christian and Marcelo). Almost five years later, they remain still at the company with us, they are key members of our senior team and remind us every day that we are doing things the right way.

We have been able to bootstrap our business without the need of external funding until now. We grew our business and assembled a talented team of 37 people. We partnered with other startups, helping them to kick off their projects with our technology and know how. We have global clients in global markets. We had our ups and downs, but we never gave up, we were always loyal to our vision and values: to create a global software company which could attract the very best talent out there. We decided to raise money from VC to make innovation happen faster at our Lab, to expand our boutique business and launch new ventures. We were lucky to find the right investors, the ones who believed in this team and our vision.

Congratulations to all the Zauber team and special thanks to all our friends, colleagues and clients who helped us throughout these years to achieve this milestone. The best is yet to come !

Twitter Analytics and Real-Time Monitoring for Argentinian Elections

Last Sunday, general elections took place in Argentina and once again Zauber was present with its technology to provide a real-time Twitter monitoring and analytics platform to track the behavior and buzz generated around this event.

Two of the most important online news media in Argentina chose Zauber to deploy an interactive real-time data visualization of Twitter and FB trends for the elections.

For La Nacion, we deployed a real-time dashboard tracking Twitter mentions for each candidate, measuring tweets per minute (buzz volume) and presenting that information with a powerful visualization, making the avatar of each candidate shine with each new tweet processed. We also measured the share of voice for each candidate. All statistic were available for the last hour, last day and last week, and were updated in real-time minute after minute.

For Infobae, we deployed another dashboard tracking Twitter mentions of each candidate in time and measuring share of voice, with a different visual representation. We added to this dashboard information about Twitter followers growth and Facebook Fans growth for each main candidate, being able to compare one candidate's metric with each other.

We are happy with these two projects that we deployed, and thankful to La Nación and Infobae, who trusted Zauber to build these innovative products for such a big event as the presidential elections. For several days, we processed hundreds of thousands of tweets referred to the elections and the candidates, delivering content to thousands of users who visited these products.

Estadísticas y Monitoreo en Twitter para Elecciones Buenos Aires

En el día de ayer Domingo 10 de Julio de 2011, tuvo lugar la primera vuelta de las elecciones a Jefe de Gobierno y Legisladores para la Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires. Como ya hicimos en pasadas oportunidades para las elecciones presidenciales en Brasil en 2010, las elecciones legislativas en Argentina en 2009 o incluso este año para monitorear los conflictos en África y Medio Oriente para Al Jazeera, en esta oportunidad volvimos a poner nuestra tecnología y creatividad en juego para crear un nuevo experimento.

El viernes 8 de Julio por la noche publicamos online una visualización en tiempo real de menciones en Twitter de los principales candidatos a Jefe de Gobierno, con el fin de monitorear el nivel de "buzz" generado en torno a cada uno y cómo éste variaba minuto a minuto, junto con el cálculo de otras métricas de interés.

Desde las 9 PM del Viernes 8 de Julio a las 9 AM del día Lunes 11, capturamos 122.000 tweets mencionando a los candidatos a jefe de gobierno más importantes, a través una conexión especial al API de Twitter denominada Firehose que nos garantizó el acceso al 100% de los tweets.

Mauricio Macri (@mauriciomacri) obtuvo su pico máximo de menciones en Twitter con 691 tweets/minuto a las 22:23 del día domingo, mientras que Daniel Filmus (@filmusdaniel) obtuvo su pico con 399 tweets/minuto a las 22:56 del mismo día. El resto de los candidatos no superó los 40 tweets/minuto, marca que registró Pino Solanas (@fernandosolanas) a las 21:48. Esto nos permite convalidar la existencia de una marcada polarización de la elección entre los dos candidatos principales, la cual queda demostrada por el análisis de un medio social como Twitter.

Trabajamos asimismo en el cálculo de otras métricas de interés, como son:

Ganancia de Followers por candidato
Distribución de menciones a cada candidato según clusters de audiencia (medida en función de followers de cada autor)
Distribución de menciones a cada candidato según clusters de autoridad (medida según el KloutScore de cada autor)
Nivel de "Buzz" generado por menciones a cada candidato y picos máximos obtenidos
Nivel de penetración ("share of voice") de cada candidato en el total de tweets referidos a ellos.

A new edition of La Red Innova is taking place today and tomorrow at Madrid.

Once again, we are excited about being part of this conference, as we did last year, when TweetDiscover was elected as a finalist of the Startups Competition.

This 2011 edition is more than special for us, considering that our latest venture Dealandia, (a daily-deals aggregator and recommendation engine), a project born at our Labs, was elected as a finalist of this year startup competition called Open Talent, among more than 300 projects.

It is also special because one of our clients was also elected as a finalist for the same competition. Ideame, an online community that helps remarkable Latin American creators realize their ideas and expand internationally through the power of crowdfunding, social media and value added services. Ideame trusted Zauber the design and development of their web platform from ground up to create a first class new Internet startup, that will definitely disrupt the web scene. Congrats to the team at Zauber who made it possible and special thanks to Ideame founders for trusting us.

Unluckily, we are not in Madrid at this moment, Puyehue volcano in Chile has been covering Argentinian skies with volcanic ashes and all flights were cancelled or postponed on the last days.

So we are forced to stay in Buenos Aires, but our heart and soul is in Madrid, but more important, every single line of code we wrote, every new venture we start and our entrepreneurial passion say present at La Red Innova 2011.

Zauber develops Terra Radar

We are happy to announce the release of a new project for our client Terra Networks: Terra Radar, a new innovative product that aggregates news and content from multiple sources across the Web and offers to the user a quick overview of the most important topics on the Web each day.

For this project, we partnered with our very good friends from Popego who provided the semantic technology and API of MeaningTool to automatically categorize the content processed by our engine and extract relevant topics.

Terra Radar is available in several countries and languages and for each community it provides the most important news of the day and week.

On its home page, a tag cloud of related and most relevant topics is shown: By selecting one topic, other related topics are shown: And once the user selects a topic, a detail page with the most recent and relevant news about is shown, with augmented information gathered from Wikipedia and other related terms and news. We are proud of this new product and the technology applied, combining our expertise in gathering content from the Web and processing it, together with Popego's semantic analysis capabilities.

Twitter visualization for Brazilian Elections

Last sunday Brazil had presidential elections and, as we did last year for argentinian elections, we developed a real time visualization based on Twitter comments to show trends for mentions of the three most relevant candidates running for president: Dilma Roussef, José Serra, and Marina Silva.

We developed this project in partnership with the agency JWT in Brazil and it served as a new demo of the social media and real time technologies we are currently developing at Zauber.

(note: only two weeks ago we also launched another demo of our technology by publishing a Google Maps + Twitter + Foursquare mashup that creates a real-time map visualization of foursquare check-ins shared on Twitter.)

This new visualization experiment for Brazilian elections proved how strong Twitter is on Brazil and how users are engaging with a new wave of digital projects that involve real-time user generated content, metrics and visualizations. By visiting http://experimento.jwt.com.br users could check the trend on Twitter for mentions of the three most important candidates and explore a visualization of twitter avatar's users filling the picture of each candidate with a velocity based on the amount of content being generated.

Let us share with you some key statistics about the results of this project. Let's start by taking a look at this infographic we created to show how trends evolved during the day of the election:

Zauber announces Dealandia.com

We are pleased to announce the launch of a new Internet venture: Dealandia.com. Dealandia aggregates and recommends local daily deals and special shopping benefits published on the Web. Dealandia is a service targeted for Latin America users and shops; we are initially offering deals in more that 100 cities in countries such us Argentina, Brazil, Mexico, Peru, Chile, Panamá and Colombia . All these deals are provided by group buying sites like GroupOn, Cuponica, iGanga, OfertaSimple (more sources coming soon). Dealandia organizes all these deals and provides an aggregation service that allows users to search and discover daily local deals in one single web destination.

This is an Alpha version of our service built in our Labs in exactly one week (excuse any bug you might find :P). We will be upgrading our service in the upcoming weeks with new features that will allow our users to personalize their preferences and interests and get more targeted deals every day. We also provide tools for site owners to generate new leads, increase their customer base and get analytics and benchmarks about their daily offerings.

Our new Design & Usability area at Zauber

We are happy to announce the public launch of our new Design & Usability area at Zauber.

We want to share with our clients and public en general our experience in building amazing software products, by applying the most well-known user centered design techniques.

In many cases, for both internal and external projects, we have been deeply involved in the research of user experience, information architecture and usability patterns.

We fell it's now time we can put all these knowledge to work in new kind of projects, whether it's part of a complete software development project or just part of its inception.

With the creation of this new area, we are reinforcing our commitment to building great software products, not always because of its technology and architecture but also because of it's user experience, iterative design and usability.

World Cup Social Project for Coca-Cola

The World Cup days are gone now and although Argentina could not make it to the finals, we are happy about one of our most recent projects: our social coverage and Twitter mashup for the World Cup celebration for Coca-Cola Latin America deployed at the fancy URL of http://celebra.cc

What we did

We captured tweets in real-time mentioning the teams playing each match, as well as tweets with photos taken near the designated stadiums. We also captured tweets using certain keywords and hashtags related to the World Cup and its celebration worldwide.

We developed a real-time chart with trends of mentions for each team playing during a match (called in Spanish "Juegómetro"), together with a slideshow of photos shared on Twitter.

Visitors to this site were able to discover cool photos taken worldwide by fans, specially by those in South Africa. See examples here, here or here.

Our goal was to let everybody, no matter where they were located, feel a little closer to this celebration, share it with friends on Twitter and Facebook and of course give their support to their teams.

To promote this application, which was built almost entirely during the first week of the World Cup, we also employed TweetDiscover to connect with users on Twitter and those checking in at certain venues on Foursquare. TweetDiscover allowed us to reach users in different locations in real-time and connect with them through @CocaColaLatam account. Here's Coca-Cola twitter account welcoming everybody to the Stadium

The results

During almost 3 weeks of World Cup we processed and displayed in real-time almost 17.000 photos shared on Twitter and published by users at these 3 main sites: Twitpic, Tweetphoto and Yfrog.

Average amount of processed tweets mentioning any of the teams playing during each match was around 150.000.

Total tweets mentioning teams only during the hours of matches processed at Celebra.cc was over 5 million.

Here is a more detailed chart of team mentions from the Round of 16 until the Final. Guess who's the winner on Twitter ? It's #JPN with more than 200.000 mentions during their match against Paraguay.

All these results are based on our usage of the Twitter Streaming API with its standard access limits.

Our Social Media experiment for Argentina's Bicentennial

Last days were special in Argentina. We commemorated the 200th anniversary of the May Revolution, a sequence of historial events that initiated our history as an independent country. Lots of celebrations took place in our country, specially in Buenos Aires, from May 21 until May 25. As part of this celebrations, different venues in the heart of the city were established as a meeting point to discover a piece of our history. Moreover, the historical Teatro Colón (one of the best opera houses in the world) was reopened after years or hard work of refurbishment.

At Zauber we wanted to be part of this celebration and, as we did last year for the national elections, we thought of a tiny experiment of technology applied to Social Media to commemorate the Bicentennial.

What we did

We added the designated venues at Foursquare with tips and to-dos about the events taking place each day.
We created a Twitter account @BicentenarioAR and automated its behavior from May 21 to May 25 to deliver short pieces of information in 140 chars about different subjects of our history. We aimed to spread through Twitter a bit of our history and revive those historical events of the May Revolution 200 years later.
Historical tips and messages were delivered to twitter users tweeting about the Bicentennial in our region and to Foursquare users sharing their check-ins in our venues through Twitter.
Every day a different set of messages was planned to be sent, according to what happened on that historical day 200 years ago.
Historical facts about the Teatro Colón were delivered to those twitter users mentioning this opera house during these days.
Scheduled reminders and tweets were sent from @BicentenarioAR 30 minutes before each event was planned to start.
We deployed a simple wesbite to promote our idea together with a real-time stream of tweets mentioning the Bicentennial.

How we did it ?

We came up with this idea on late Thursday May 20 and we had it online on Friday afternoon May 21. We applied some new platforms we are developing to create social media campaigns on Twitter and configured 20 different automated campaigns and almost 90 scheduled tweets that would be running on Twitter until May 26. We wanted to experiment news ways of engaging with users and some cool technology we are building. And we wanted at the same time to feel we were part of this celebration and revive the history of our Nation.

The results

546 followers for @BicentenarioAR (started with zero on May 21)
187 mentions for @BicentenarioAR (see examples of replies here)
720 historical messages delivered to twitter users (see examples here and here)
1093 followed users
2890 tweets processed
90 scheduled tweets sent (see example here)
Average CTR for links included in messages was 95% (we provided short-links for further information on Wikipedia and Teatro Colón websites)

We are really happy with our tiny experiment, considering the short time we had to build it and the nice feedback and comments we received from Twitter users. Thank you to everyone who joined us.

Barcamp Buenos Aires - Open Data & Mashups 3.0

Last saturday we attended Barcamp Buenos Aires, the third edition in Buenos Aires of the unconference that gathers Web developers, designers, entrepreneurs and anyone related to the Internet and Technology industry. Juan F. Codagnone, co-founder at Zauber, had the chance to present a talk about LinkedData and Mashups 3.0, where he talked about the needs to openly expose information in raw formats and facilitate the exchange of information, linking them in RDF databases. His presentation highlighted projects like Freebase.com, DBPedia.org, New York Times Open Data, among others. Check out his slides here:

Our first native iPhone Application - iFlof

Directly from our Zauber Labs, the space where every member of our staff can devote its 10% time to work on a personal Research & Development project, we are pleased to announce that iFlof, our first native iPhone SDK Application, has been approved and published in App Store.

iFlof is still Beta and we are planning to add more funtionality in the near future. This first version is a front-end for Flof that enables users to:

Real-time Data Streaming for Argentinian Elections Coverage

Yesterday we had congressional elections at Argentina and online media prepared to cover it in different ways on the Web. Argentinian Twitter users agreed to use the hashtag #urna2009 in their messages, creating this way a better way to track elections-related messages.

At Zauber we decided to develop an experiment to follow the elections in real-time, digging into some technologies we have been researching lately. We developed a simple web page that integrated Facebook Connect, Twitter Streaming API together with our technology of Events and Messages Bus, XMMP messages routing and HTTP persistent connections. The result was a product capable of showing in real-time the stream of tweets (those referrering to certain keywords and hashtags) together with updates from external RSS sources with elections-related news and real-time trends of mentions to our candidates and some other keywords.

We are really pleased about how the community engaged with our technology and the wonderful comments of support we received .

Now we have shut down access to the Zauber Stream for a couple of days, while we keep on working on improving performance and scalability and thinking of new features to add, planning to provide real-time data streaming on new occasions. Stay tuned !

ISO 9001:2008 Quality Certification

We are really excited about this achievement, given the fact that we were able to combine our agile processes based on Scrum together with the requirements of an international quality policy like ISO. These last months we have been working in various development projects for our client Clarin Global, the Internet company of Grupo Clarin, one of the most important news and media companies in LatAm.

We are happy to announce that two of these projects are already available online:

VendedorPro 2.0: this is a completely new version of the tool VendedorPro for MasOportunidades.com. This tool allows big sellers to manage big amounts (plus 10K items) of products by means of a Desktop Application that connects securely with MasOportunidades services. This tool was developed using Eclipse RCP (Rich Client Platform) on Java 5 together with open source technologies such us: Spring Dynamic Modules, Hibernate and CXF.

Guía Clarin 2.0: another completely new version of the Internet website Guía Clarin the most complete online guide of Argentinian shops, available in a vast range of categories. This project was developed using Java 5 technology and a stack of open-source technologies such us: Spring MVC, Apache Wicket and Hibernate.

In both cases, we developed from scratch new versions of these products using cutting-edge technologies to support them. We are really happy about these two projects and hope to keep on announcing new releases in the future.

Our company case has been published under a section with a very funny name: Entreprenerds. Fact is, we really love that name: we consider ourselves both Entrepreneurs and Nerds, so the neologism is quite accurate for us.
