From December 1st to 5th, Father Lacombe will be covering issues that have to do with AIDS and its effect on the world around.</p> <p>In order to kick things off with a bang, theyÃ¢â‚¬â„¢ve already started collecting funds by selling Halloween-o-grams (Halloween Candy Grams). Each Halloween-o-gram contains a fact about AIDS written on the bottom. This is to spread the awareness of AIDS before the actual AIDS Awareness Week occurs.</p> <p>As a follow-up to this event for the month of November, the SimonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Legacy Committee that runs all AIDS awareness campaigns in the school will continue collecting donations to fund this event. SimonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Legacy was created in honour of Simon Atem, who was one of the lost boys of Sudan. His project, SimonÃ¢â‚¬â„¢s Project, was such a huge success that after he graduated, Father Lacombe High School decided to extend it.</p> <p>During the duration of this Aids Awareness Week, the school will be fundraising and campaigning for the relief of AIDS in Africa. She was adamant about not following in his footsteps. "I was definitely more arty and I wanted to do acting, make art and all that, but I wanted more to go on a journey," she says reminiscently. "And I remember thinking that one day when I'm lying on my deathbed, I'm gonna be grateful for my friends, not my career achievements. So as a teenager, I wasn't really ambitious."</p> <p>The result of having concentrated her efforts on bettering herself as an individual, rather than planning out her livelihood during high school? A healthy perspective on life and a creative profession she adores.</p> <p>It wasn't until Lenka began singing nightly as part of her acting role for a play back in Australia that she truly realized her talent and love for music. Following positive feedback from viewers, she decided to delve into a singing career. She then flew to Los Angeles, where she impressed Epic Records and was signed to a record deal.</p> <p>Currently on the Hotel Café tour, Lenka is still overwhelmed by her successes, and her growing number of fans. "It's really exciting to actually get some response from people, particularly from individuals that write to me on MySpace, or what-have-you, and tell you that my music is helping them, you know, through a tough time, or making them feel like their day is a little better," she says in one animated breath.</p> <p>Her life's journey, thus far, may not have seemed too gruelling, but she still advises that music takes a lot of work: "You have to respect the craft and try to get as good as it as you can because there's a lot of musicians out there. I would suggest to people to try to originate rather than imitate because it's much more creatively fulfilling to feel like you're doing your own thing because you're never going to be exactly like someone else."</p> <p>Bottom line: work hard and be yourself. As obvious as striving for originality may sound, thousands of artists do not succeed because they lack ingenuity. Clearly, Lenka's words have merit, considering the fact that her successful songs, such as "Don't Let Me Fall" and "The Show," creatively blend pop with a nursery-rhyme element.</p> <p>It is no wonder Lenka's imaginative songs, cheerful attitude and dedication has enabled her to enjoy the whirlwind of her career. Here are some examples of the best and worst dressed.</p> <p>Best Dressed<br /> Kate Winslet rocked her Narcisco Rodriguez gown as she paused for a photo on the way into the awards. The rich jewel-tone of the dress suited her skin-tone perfectly and the cut of the dress enhanced every curve of her body. This outfit deserves a 5 out of 5 rating!</p> <p>Freida Pinto's choice of a lavender Marchesa gown gets the approval of the fashion police. The woven design of the bodice combined with the flowing skirt is pretty, yet elegant. Scott Fitzgerald's short story, "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" is receiving great Oscar buzz, which is sure to entice many viewers. But aside from the acting and quality of the film itself, people need to see this movie for the simple reason that this story is guaranteed to move you emotionally and tug at your heartstrings.</p> <p>Problems?<br /> Anyone who is not willing to invest a lot of time in movie viewing should skip this flick as it runs just short of three hours. A deeply wrinkled baby, blinded by cataracts and weakened by arthritis, is born. So begins the unusual tale of Benjamin Button (Pitt): the man whose clock chimes in the wrong direction. Abandoned by his father on the doorstep of a nursing home, Benjamin is taken in by a young nurse, Queenie (Henson). As he grows up - or rather down - watching everyone around him inch toward death while he himself grows younger, Benjamin quickly resolves to only move forward. But as he sets out to travel the world, pursue his beloved Daisy (Blanchett) and uncover his own cryptic history, moving forward proves to have unprecedented difficulties.</p> <p>Why see it?<br /> The peculiarity of a reversed aging process is enough to immediately grip the viewer, but the striking cinematography and the remarkable performances don't hurt the movie either. Brad Pitt's portrayal of the title character is riveting, while Taraji Henson's note-worthy performance as Button's surrogate mother comes through with flying colours. Moreover, the movie shines a new ray of light on the human aging process, and the creativity with which Fitzgerald's short story has been adapted into a screenplay will make cinema history.</p> <p>Problems?<br /> If you're craving a heavy dose of action or adventure, this movie is not for you. There is not much of a plot either, and at some points the storyline progresses slowly. After a series of embarrassing events, where the self-proclaimed mall cop makes a complete mess of things, Paul finds himself in the middle of a mall takeover. He is now the only one on the inside who can do anything, and is determined to save the day.</p> <p><strong>Why see it?</strong><br /> As any fan of the Emmy Award winning sitcom The King of Queens would attest, you can't help but smile when the lovable Kevin James appears onscreen.</p> <p><strong>Problems?</strong><br /> If you're at that point in life where seeing a grown man fall down dramatically, strike a goofy pose or put on a childish facial expression just isn't enough to make you laugh, you're not going to enjoy this movie. Mall Cop's comedy is dependant on the ridiculousness of Paul Blart's antics and the innocent yet illogical ways in which he handles his situation. A) He cheated. B) He’s lucky. C) He’s a genius or D) It is written.” As the wry and humble Jamal is questioned by interrogators bent on proving he cheated, he describes through a series of flashbacks how a life of distinctive experiences gave him the answers to the show’s questions. The young Jamal and his more-shrewd brother Salim (Mittal) were orphaned when their mother was killed by anti-Muslim rioters (in a scene which takes on more significance after the recent Mumbai terror attacks). As a result, the two become self-reliant children of the slums in a city of millions, encountering various episodes of absurdity and challenges on their way to adulthood.</p> <p>Why see it?<br /> Though the electrifying Golden-Globe winning score and clever narrative mechanism both drive the plot, the film’s best element is its vibrant cinematography. The cameras make the viewer feel the game show’s pulsing lights, the slum’s multi-coloured shacks, the congested alleyways and brown rivers brimming with laundry. Jamal’s dedicated search for his elusive love, Latika, is contrasted with the complicated relationship he and his brother share. As the trio who as children called themselves “The Three Musketeers” find, life is a journey in which poverty and wealth, love and expediency, happiness and tragedy happen in equal measure.</p> <p>Problems?<br /> Certain scenes are a little unrealistic. The young brothers’ systematic defrauding of American tourists by giving them a false history of the Taj Mahal is one. The dialogue is corny at times, such as in this exchange between Jamal and Latika: “Come away with me.” “But what will we live on?” “Love.” The film strives to be a crowd-pleaser and an award-contender, and as such is often contrived rather than subtle. This division also happens to contain three of the six Canadian franchises in the league. As usual, the fans for these teams have high hopes for their team. So let's take a look at what these three teams need to do in order to get in the playoffs and make a run for the cup!</p> <p>VANCOUVER CANUCKS<br /> Let'¢s start with the Vancouver Canucks, the supposed "weak sister". They have arguably the best goalie in the NHL in Roberto Luongo, not to mention one of the leagues top defensive squads with Mattias Ohlund, Kevin Bieksa, Sami Salo, Alexander Edler, Willie Mitchell and Shane O'Brien. Every one of these guys are legitimate top four defensemen, and along with Luongo they make it pretty hard to score against the Canucks.</p> <p>The weak spot of the Canucks is their offence. Other than the Sedin twins and Pavol Demitra, the Canucks don't have much firepower. Demitra's injury-riddled past is an issue, which has come up again this season as he had to deal with a rib injury. They have some players with the potential to put up big numbers in Mason Raymond, Steve Bernier and Kyle Wellwood, who have shown the ability to be top six forwards, but have had trouble with consistency. They also have Ryan Kesler, who is a great two-way forward, as shown by his 21 goals last year, and great play so far this season, while having to shutdown the other team's top players. The tag team of Kesler and Alexandre Burrows was one of the best checking tandems in the Northwest last year and still that chemistry going this season. If they continue to score like they have throughout the season, the Canucks could make a push for the playoffs.</p> <p>EDMONTON OILERS<br /> The Oilers forward bunch is arguably the best in the Northwest, unlike a few years ago. This has been due to the emergences of Sam Gagner, Andrew Cogliano, and Robert Nilsson. All had 40+ points last year, and were on fire in the stretch drive last year, getting the Oilers within 3 points of the playoffs. Add in the fact that there are four other top six players in the Oilers lineup (Ales Hemsky, Dustin Penner, Shawn Horcoff, and Erik Cole), the Oilers should not have had any problems scoring goals this year, but things didn't start off the way everyone expected. </p> <p>However, with the offense starting to click and the addition of Lubomir Visnovsky this year to the blue-line added yet another offensive defenseman to join Tom Gilbert, Sheldon Souray and Denis Grebeshkov. If the Oilers play up to their potential and goalie Roloson lives up to expectations, the Oilers might just make a decent run in the playoffs this season. </p> <p>CALGARY FLAMES<br /> In goal the Flames seem to be solid with Miikka Kiprusoff as their starter, and under Iron Mike Keenan, he should see at least 70 starts by the time the regular season comes to an end. Calgary's defence, led by star Dion Phaneuf, looks to be good as usual the past few seasons. They also have Mark Giordano, who played in Russia last year, who can chip in offensively. The Flames also have Robyn Regher (arguably one of the best defensive defensemen in the league), Adrian Aucoin, Anders Ericksson, and Cory Sarich, all reliable defensemen.</p> <p>Offence was thought to be a weak point at the beginning of the season, but that problem doesn't seem to have lasted.
