Captain Beefheart – My Head is my only House unless it Rains

Captain Beefheart passed away a few days ago. Since then I haven’t been able to stop listening to “My Head is my only House unless it Rains”. It’s the weirdest love song I have ever heard, but it catches me.

To quote Bob Lefsetz in a letter he sent to his followers about Captain Beefheart’s death:
“I read the news today, oh boy. And I was emotionally affected and needed to reach out to you. They’re rewriting rock and roll history and getting it all wrong. They want you to think that Patti Smith was more important than Alice Cooper, that Top Forty radio ruled in the late sixties and early seventies, that everybody was always in it for the money. Whether it’s Rock, Folk, Soul, or Early Modern English carols, Jeff Buckley can do it all very well. Having drowned at age 30, he only released one official studio album, Grace, although there have been several posthumous releases from an unfinished album and some demos.

“I Want Someone Badly” was released on the Legacy Edition of Grace in 2004.

This is a little bit unusual and a bit of a departure from the usual DSF routine, but it’s too good to pass up! This happened two days ago at a charity fundraiser in St. Petersburg. Apparently, Putin was merely a guest at this event, but was asked to sing by the hosts and-after a little bit of encouragement-made it up to the stage and belted out the Fats Domino classic. It’s definitely a little slow and awkward, but the audience eats it up. Well done, Vladimir!

For comparison purposes, I’ve included the Fats Domino original. Which is better? You be the judge.

Oh damn! We’re going back in time today, campers! If you were alive in the mid-nineties, at some point you’ve probably gotten DOWN to this song.

Mark Morrison has-even for a R&B artist-a pretty impressive criminal record as well as a Mohammed Ali-like talent for talking himself up. A few years ago he was jailed for-get this-hiring an impersonator to fulfill his community service while he went on tour! How awesome is that?
