“Home Taping Is Killing Music” – the BPI

We’re proud to be releasing this first VODO MIXTAPE. Actual tape might be a thing of the past, but before P2P, mixtapes were the most popular way of sharing popular culture the world had known — and once called the ‘most widely practiced American art form’. We want to resuscitate the spirit of the mixtape for this VODO MIXTAPE series: compilations of our favourite shorts, the weird, the wild and the wonky, all brought together in a temporary and uncomfortable company.

Famously, ‘Home Taping Is Killing Music’ was the slogan of a 1980s anti-copyright infringement campaign by the British Phonographic Industry. The widely parodied slogan reflected the industry’s concern that sharing by tape would destroy their business. Back then, punks used mixtape culture to spread their music through networks of fans. We hope the VODO MIXTAPE works the same way, to bring new creative works direct to fans through the culture of sharing. Peer to peer pressure!

When Sarah Braverman, a financially strapped single mother, returns home to her parents and siblings in Berkeley, Calif. after packing up her Fresno apartment and uprooting her two inconvenienced kids, Amber (Mae Whitman) and Drew (Miles Heizer), she is greeted by her opinionated father, Zeek (Nelson), and strong mother, Camille (Bedelia) who are privately dealing with their own marital issues. As Sarah is reunited with her siblings — sister, Julia (Christensen), and brothers Crosby (Shepard) and Adam (Krause) — all struggling with issues of their own, it’s clear that the Braverman reunion is just what they need to face the everyday challenges of modern family life.

Brooklyn’s finest does have a lot of stars in it but at the same time it has big shoes to fit into after a series of cop movies like The Departed, righteous kill etc., Antione Fuqua just seems to be trying to get back his fame by attempting a movie whose script has been frequented, the case of the corrupt cop. The only difference is that this time around the movie doesn’t have only one cop who is in the corrupt line but three of them. The three cops are Eddie played by Richard Gere, an officer who works for the narcotics department Sal who is played by Eathan Hawke and Tango who is played by Don Cheadle.

Sal is shown to be stealing some of the drugs just so that he can bear the expenditures of his wife and son. The characters are rather depressing and the movie slowly degenerates from mildly depressing to unbearably depressing. Eddie seems to have just one expression on his face all the time and Sal keeps whining about how small his house his and how badly he needs space. Tango on the other hand has not much of a role. Don can hardly do a bad job but with a bad script nothing can be done. It’s surprising he accepted the role.

There’s also Wesley Snipes who plays a role as a leader of a criminal gang. This role is not well written again but Snipes has done his part well and looks promising. The movie is a drag and a torture.
