What we did do, was hang out by the cities canals, ride around on grannie bikes, loll in the sunshine and lust after virtually all items in the dozens of top-notch design stores.

one piece that caught my eye – how could it not! – was this full size horse lamp by Moooi. Standing as tall as a full throuroughbred (16hands, 240 cm) it would definitely stand out in your living room.

I’d absolutely love to take this impressive steed home with me, but our London flat is cramped enough as it is. oh, and it costs  over 3 thousand euros…

Hayama’s paintings join together western and Japanese influences, combining different art historical periods varying from Christian art, Greek mythology to contemporary Japanese pop culture and Ukiyo-E.

Many of the figures are pictured with fruits and animals which refer to theme from Christian art such as sin, salvation, envy and love.

Hayama’s pale, ethereal figures with frail bodies and pale tinited eyes often inspired by mangas, portray an angelic appearance which clashes with a penetrating and unnerving glare directed at the viewer.

Unnerving? yes. Beautiful? definitely. just my kinda thing.

well, the guys at save the beach have gone one step further and created an entire hotel built out of rubbish, right smack bang in the middle of Rome. The hotel isn’t small either, with two floors and sleeping 10 inhabitants each night.

Designed and created by HA Schult, Carona & save the beach created the pop-up hotel from rubbish found across the beaches of Europe. Its first visitor was supermodel and eco warrior Helena Christensen, who definitely makes the following images a little more photogenic.

The clear scale of a fully functional hotel being built out of trash draws attention to all the crap that is strewn on the beaches – but is often in volumes so small that most of us don’t even bother to grab it and throw it in a bin.

Top marks for Carona for making delicious beer and taking the time to give a damn.

should you happen to see a willowy brunette wandering the streets of east london laughing or smiling dreamily on her own, it may well be lady worthington getting her TAL fix. sometimes i’ve caught myself laughing out loud in tescos. crikey. the first episode i listened to caused a tear or two to roll down my cheeks. i was on my way to work. it was unexpected to say the least!

i’ve been listening to it a for only a few weeks, but it’s already become a treasure.

so, if it was no SATC- what was it? it was an aged barbie who goes to the desert with her 3 best doll friends while the plot gets about as deep as a powder compact.

carrie is bored after 2 years of marriage,  if it means her husband wants to sit on their expensive couch. especially if it means he wants to buy them dinner from a take-out. BOR-ING. she is, in her own words, a “nagging bitch wife”.

charlotte is so overwhelmed with being a wealthy mother of 2 with live-in help, she can’t stop crying in her vintage valentino. and the live-in help doesn’t wear a bra, so her husband is definitely going to cheat, right?

miranda’s boss treats her like a doll with no voice and so, she sticks it to him.

and samantha’s lost her sex drive, so samantha feels her life is barely worth living at all. well, if that isn’t deprecation of woman-kind, i don’t know what is.

and with that, i retract the single point i prematurely handed out.

it’s mildly entertaining in parts and yes, i did cry a little bit (I cried in the ugly truth, which is truly the worst film i have ever seen; so please help yourself to the salt shaker to season this admission liberally).

instead of any witty insights or indeed fancy highlights as the series was once famous for, as a woman i found it patronising, demoralising and carrie’s hair has never looked so lank and, erm, like a horse’s mane.

don’t believe the hype: the styling was awful. offal.

and don’t even get me started on the stretched screens, the botox, the potential racism or the ABSENCE OF THE JAZZY/SEXY THEME TUNE.

so, i’d better wrap this up or tomagotchi will tell me off for ranting and writing way too much about something he already despised.

all that’s left me to say is this:
with no sex and no city, all that was left was number 2. and no-one wants to go to the cinema to see number 2’s, do they?

On Wednesday my two worlds merged. I was able to invite a small group of London style bloggers along to the Next A/W2010 press day, hosted in a disused church in Mayfair. I was as impressed with the setup as the bloggers were actually – a disused church, watermellon iced drinks, sweeeet!

We had a lovely time, wandered around the displays, took some snaps, drunk some juice, the girls were interviewed for next tv, I pretended to know about women’s fashion, and then we went to the pub for a few jugs of pimms. super duper.

however we both agree that Michael Barolet takes amazing photographs. He hails from the Northern Virginia/ Washington DC area and takes exquisite portraits and nudes of close friends captured by a 8×10″ view camera. He also preserves a unique sense of the wilderness around him in each frame.

There’s a sense of stillness to your images (even when featuring moving trees or people), how do you create that?

When I take photos, it is usually only my models(s), myself and the land that is around us.  So there isn’t a whole lot going on other than us running around and taking photos.  I think that location plays a huge part in the feeling of stillness, even if someone is running around or moving in the photo.

Why do you shoot on with large format film? How does this affect the photos you take?

I’m in love with the process of shooting large format.  It’s really involved from start to finish.  From loading your film holders the night before a shoot, to hand processing and printing the negatives.

8×10″ negatives hold an incredible amount of detail.  Because of that, and the very small amount of depth of field I get with my lenses, I am able to get photos that have a three dimentional quality to them.

Where were the shots in group 6 (on your site) taken?

Those photographs are from a long term project that I am trying to finish up.  All of the photos were taken within a ten mile radius of my home in Northern Virginia.  They were shot over a period three summers, all at sundown.  I really wanted to convey the feeling of being out in the woods, in the ninty plus degree, humid weather.

I am currently printing and editing this project and then I hope to start showing it around a bit more.

Who, or what, is your biggest influence?

The biggest overall influence on my work would have to be Jock Sturges.  His photographs blew me away the first time I saw them.  It’s because of his work, along with the work of Sally Mann and Emmet Gowin, that I started shooting 8×10.

I took a class with Sturges in 2005.  He taught me how important it is to have a good relationship with the people you photograph.  My models are able to give me so much more if they are comfortable with me. Thats why try to only photograph people that I am close with.

What do you hope to convey in your shots? What do you want the viewer to feel?

I want the viewer to see that my photos are more than just another nude or portrait.  I want them to look into the photo and see that there is a relationship between the model and myself.  I know the people in my photos well and I think that shows through in the final image.

I also want them to feel as if they are there with me.  I have the people in my photos look into the camera a lot.  The eye contact really helps draw the viewer into the photograph and makes them feel as if they are a part of it.

Tell us about how you first started taking photos

I’ve carried a camera with me everywhere I go since the beginning of high school.  Most of my early photos were just snapshots of what my friends and I got ourselves into.  I never really went out of my way to make any kind of serious photos.  I just knew that I like documenting what was going on around me and the people I was with.

How has your style changed over time? Has this been a conscious evolution?

My early portraits and nudes were all over the place.  I think a lot of the photos felt forced.  Now I just try to focus on making the photograph that is in front of me.  The photos are a collaboration between me and whoever is in front of the camera at the time.  I try not to direct my models.  I just let them be themselves and tell them to freeze when I see them do something I like.  Because of this I think my newer work, from the last five years, feels a a lot more natural.

Who is your favorite/designer/artist/photographer right now?

I really love the new studio portraits Ryan McGinley has been doing.  I like that he is mixing it up a little bit and doing something different then we are all used to seeing him do.

I’ve heard some people will say that an artist, should keep one style and stick with it their whole career.  I don’t really agree with that if the artist can make doing something different work.  I think McGinley is doing a great job at keeping his art new and fresh while still keeping a central theme the work.

What are you working on right…now?

I’m working on a few different longterm projects right now.  Most of the work is large format portraits and nudes of my friends.  I don’t see myself quitting the portraits any time soon.

I’ve also been working on a series of self portraits over the last few years.  Eventually I will pull them out of the boxes I throw them all into and start to edit them.

she was dressed to impress by a selection of aussie designers, who remodeled their spring/summer 2010 collections to fit her pints-sized frame. the supermodel was reported to have been very compliant on set and didn’t even require a loo break. nor did she eat any of the sushi that was laid on for the shoot, leading to further speculation that the world’s ideal woman does not in fact, eat.

however it must be said that in an industry where it has become apparent other models stay thin through other damaging methods, barbie has never been seen to even hold a cigarette in her 51 years of fame.

how she does it, perhaps we’ll never know. the only question on every woman’s lips is, “who’s her plastic surgeon?”

and we all know the answer to that:

You crop some of your shots in very tightly (by frame & lighting) – why is this?

When I look at things I only pay attention to one single thing and everything else around me disappears, and in my photographs I interpret life through my eyes.

What camera do you shoot with?

I shoot with a Nikon D300, Hasselblad 500c/m, and a Canon AE-1

Who, or what, is your biggest influence?

My biggest influence is most definitely Andy Warhol, he is the one who inspired me to be an artist.

What do you hope to convey in your shots? What do you want the viewer to feel?

I convey exactly what I feel and what I’ve been through in my photography, I don’t expect every viewer to know what the meaning of my work is, but I know that there is at least one person who will look at my photograph and feel that pound in their heart because they know exactly what I’m trying to say, simply, because they are aware of that particular feeling.

On your site you mention that all your shots capture the ‘absolute truth’. What is the absolute truth that you’re trying to capture?

The absolute truth is the story of my life, it’s as if I am writing a biography without saying a single word.

Which of your shots is your fave?

I cant say that I have a favorite photograph. I find it difficult to judge my own work, its like looking in the mirror everyday you already know what to expect when you look into your own eyes and that’s how I feel about looking at my own photographs.

Who features in your shots? Friends or models?

Most of time I use models, though in my earlier work I did use my friends most of the time.

How has your style changed over time? Has this been a conscious evolution?

When I first started taking pictures I was interested more in still life, then I gradually started photographing people and now most of my work is narrative. I do believe that it has been a conscious evolution because now that I’m older I have a better understanding of my past and that is what all my photography is about.

Who is your favorite/designer/artist/photographer right now?

My favorite designer is Marc Jacobs, my favorite artist is Salvador Dali, and my favorite photographer is Guy Bourdin.

What are you working on right…now?

Right now, I am starting to experiment with more story telling that could be told only in a series of images and not just in a single image itself.

it’s an ad for coke by british artist peter blake and it hangs up behind reception. it is huge and it’s mesmerising.

and it got me thinking…

when i was 10, i was on a train. the girl sitting opposite me pulled out of her bag a piece of card she been working on for a friend’s birthday. she had cut out and stuck on all images of all sorts of celebrities. it looked so exciting to me. i’d never seen anything like it and to my kiddie artist brain it looked so easy. “i could do that!” i thought and so when  got home i bounced about with a pair of scissors and uhu glue rummaging for old mags.
and the end result? it looked crap. firstly, my mum never HAD any magazines apart from a couple of women’s weeklies but the real problem was, i was out of my depth. i knew it looked crap, so i chucked it before anyone could ask me what i was doing because actually i had NO idea what i was really doing. i had no concept of what those images of people i had never met represented. i had only chosen them because it was all i had to play with.

so, that’s my first thought: it’s not as easy at it looks. don’t be fooled by the bright colours and the haphazard mood of peter blake’s coke ad. it takes a whole lotta planning to make something look so spontaneous.

as i got older, i started scrap books and began the image collecting process again. images of this person or the other beautiful person were collected and pasted. and if i had any gall i might have even called it art, but i didn’t because i felt that would have been “cheating”. those images weren’t mine. i was merely collecting them and arranging them like so for my own pleasure. really, it wasn’t my work.

and so that’s my second question: who actually owns these montages? how does someone like peter blake get the rights to use these famous faces? do the originals belong to the photographer? or the celebs? and as for peter blake’s fame, does it even belong to him? one of his most famous pieces is cover for the beatle’s sergeant pepper’s lonely hearts club band album.

does that not mean that he owes (even just a little bit) of his fame to the beatles? questions, questions… as you can see, i’m having a VERY busy weekend.

the girl looks like a regular british chick. she looks like she smokes too much, drinks way too much and is pretty rancidly hungover on most of her shoots. by the time she gets round to donning the latest designer street looks and slouching it in for the photographer, i reckon she’s really had enough of the day and just wants a nurofen and to be left alone, thank you.

i began to wonder why i didn’t have her job… heck i would love her job and i don’t have to be out slammin it down every night of the week.

in my envy/curiosity, i started asking (anyone who would listen) “who is she?!”

well, it turns out she is the fashion editor of STYLE magazine (ooh nice job!) and is also a stylist (ooh another nice job!)

and when i popped her name in to google, it turns out she doesn’t always look so wrecked. nice job!

then it occurred, maybe she’s doing the rock’n'roll living look for all the readers. i mean her article comes out on sunday which, in the western world is the International Day of Hangover. the girls are feeling rough and nauseous as they  flick through the sunday papers, trying to self-sooth and distract with a bit of light reading and she is merely mirroring the reader back to themselves, in an effort to be reassuring rather than inducing feelings in the reader of being judged. kinda like she’s unifying the hungover sister-hood.

how modern. and how grungy (which i still think is very 90’s, so paradoxically, not so modern)

anyways, her style is a bit courageous and yet fits neatly in to the ‘cool’ bracket with out ever looking like she’s playing sexy or dress up, which is very important. she’s confident in her choices and a little bit ‘out there’. just enough to make her interesting and not daunting for other girls wanting fash tips and to stand out a little for fashion know-how, rather than fashion no-no.

AND through a bit of necessary stalking on the tinternet, i have discovered that when she’s not sobering up in the sunday times, the girl actually looks like fun and she even SMILES.

so, natalie is just a normal girl, with a keen understanding of the delicate intricacies of modern eclectic style, who just happens to have a totally awesome job. a job where she can chain smoke and knock back the shots and it kinda improves her output. rather clever if you ask me.

From the look of his site his commissioned illustrative work is largely for magazines, and features a certain lightness - taking cues from history and developing on the nostalgia of the past.

His other work, however is far far darker. Featuring characters you’d expect to find in antiquated handbooks of the occult and alluding to diabolical narratives his work is nothing like I’ve seen before. It still retains the nod to history, but it’s a history I’m thankfully not familiar with.

looking through the archives of holy ghost reveals how they have slowly evolved from a bunch of great photographs, to a bunch of great photographs with a more ethereal & spectral quality… ghostlike. their minimal site design complements it perfectly. bravo.

While it’d be easy to dismiss her snaps as a straightforward capture of the mountains she lives near, coupled with a deft hand at enhancing through photoshop.. there is undoubtedly something unique in her composition. The rule of 3rds rings true, and they lend her shots a certain confidence that defies her young age. Perhaps the old hills have taught her a thing or two..

David Mankey started the process by hand, using compass and square to discover repeat matrix of the atomic images.

Since then, Mankey focused on the colour aspects of Atomic Art and has produced a dazzling range of dynamic colour treatments which illustrate different visual and kinetic effects.

Not so. The 4th&Bleeker blog features self portraits – note the remote in her hand.

We’re used to bloggers taking shots of their daily outfits to show off their style credentials. Is this the next step? Cutting out the pretense that they want to show off their clothes and style credentials, when in reality they just want to show off themselves.

Regardless, I’m impressed at how these shots turn out. From reading her comments sounds like she uses a mirror to get it right, narsasistic but if it’s good enough for Van Gogh…

I guess it’s the fact you look like a model that makes the difference between creating a site like this to put yourself in front of the world, and hanging out on chatroulette.

Isn’t it great when you find out that your friends are up to wonderful things. Not that I knew Polly that well, she was more like a friend-of-a-friend when I was in Melbourne. I always thought she was mighty friendly and had a lovely smile and a very geometric haircut – for a girl.

I really like Patrick’s style. it’s got a simple naive semi-tribal vibe going on, along with some subtle ironies and witticisms in each piece. Placing all the work, digitised or otherwise onto a paper texture is a nice touch too.

Speaking of lazers (or lasers for those with AUS/UK spellcheckers) – Hot Chip have just released this corker of a filmclip directed by butterfield diet man Peter Serafinowicz. It’s very awesome, and very very odd.

This month they have typographer, illustrator, art-director and designer extraordinaire Chrissie Abbott displaying her wares. You’d most likely have seen her work for little boots splayed all across town a few months back.

I particularly like the top piece, it’s actually a light box and looks amazing all lit up.  Very cool stuff.

maybe I’m just a control freak and would prefer to do this kinda stuff in photoshop – but then again, i don’t ever get around to it. In that spirit -  Mr Allred, I salute you. Beautiful shots too.

They’re working roughs of the cover of his favorite book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding. While just 3 independent mock covers, when placed together they show an evolution of style and treatment that not only makes a great triptych, but inadvertently conveys the transformation that occurs to the characters in the book. Great when things accidentally fall in place.
