i confess! i am completely in love with the a/w  2010 ready to wear collection. i have never felt such affinity with a collection.

i just wish it were ok for me to go out on to the pavement in big knickers and transparent skirts. maybe it is? tomagotchi? may i?

When I first recieved them, I wasn’t sure – too much negative space, too dark, too ethereal. But, like a good album that takes time to become aquanted and find the nuances – these shots have warmed to me.
In his note, Willey professed he’d been “contemplating methods of printing, framing and how they will become more than digital files.” I guess that transformation happens in a personal sense too.

well, after jane shepherdson left her chief exec position at topshop in 2007 after 20 years (and transforming it into a crack-fashion empire) she has since been employed as chief mastermind of whistles, after a brief trip over to oxfam as a volunteer advisor. and boy is she breathing some new life in to the declining british boutique chain!

instead of boxy jackets and wide cut trousers, whistles seems to be taking it’s inspiration from the east (that’s shoreditch, not china, just to clarify) and suddenly the collections are awash with patterned playsuits, tuxedo jackets and a youthful, independent confidence. and these changes follow through to every detail of the whistles chain. from the store facade, store interiors, to the website, everything about whistles is hipper, more self-assured and well, just a whole lot cooler. think less cutsy, but with oodles more charm.

Shen Plum is one such creative peep. I guess I was captivated by the simplicity & narrative that she brings to each piece, the soft hues and the odd, yet natural relativity of scale and depth. There’s also that attention to detail and craft that I can’t seem to get over too.

So anyway, the lovely Shen was kind enough to answer a few questions for us which are below. have a read and enjoy. x

When did you start drawing? When did you realise this was what you wanted to do?

i started to draw when i was in kindergarten, my mom looked at my drawings and thought i sucked at it, but i just kept drawing stuff, so she took me to a after-school art class, and my interest for it developed more and more from there.

How has your style changed over time? Has this been a conscious evolution?

yup, change is good, i used to paint/draw differently, i guess i just realize more what i enjoy doing and what i’m best at.

The backgrounds often have a lovely soft hue. What do you paint on?

my dad has these paper from the 80’s, they are stained and smell weird now, but they’re interesting to draw on.

You’ve also thrown scale out the window, what affect do you think this has on your images?

scale as in giant fox and tiny human? it’s just fun for me to mess things up a little bit, i’m not really aware that i’m doing that.

There are some reoccurring images (foxes, bright orby necklace things, trees) – do they have a deeper meaning?

nope, i just think they look cool.

I notice you designed a rabbit tee for super superficial – how’d that come about?

i drew that vamp bunny a while ago, submitted it to ss, and they liked it so they printed it out on their tees, they made it on 3 different color tees and they did a great job printing it, i was surprised and happy when i got the samples.

Any other buyables we should be aware of?

um graniph is carrying my bunny tees if you’re into..bunnies. i’m also selling some prints on little paper planes.

Oh, and the YeahYeahYeah’s pic of Karen with her face in another dimension – is that something for her, or for you as a fan?

i guess it’s a fan thing. my friend who wants to marry karen o, told me about this tshirt contest yyys’ holding, so we entered and that was my design for the contest.

Who is your favorite/designer artist right now?

there are way too many to name so i guess i’ll just skip this… :)

What are you working on right…now?

right…now a couple of things, drawing more stuff for supersweet magazine, and doing this collective thing with my buddy dreams&rubies (http://dreamsandrubies.blogspot.com/)

who said boho was dead after the gold-rush of 2005? well, as fashion would have it, boho looks like it’s set for a revival, merely half a decade on.
or, maybe boho never really died. maybe it was just lying a little bit in shock after the intense sienna/kate copy-cat action that exhausted the vibe until it fell into an unconscious pile of large low-slung belts, cowboy boots and feathers, circa 2008.

here at paris fashion week, super-boho-deluxe has woken up, shaken off the excess plumage and is looking mighty fine! it’s set to make the it-girl’s heart-a-flutter in no time at all, especially with those flirty skirts. and as isabel’s looks are full of little pieces that girls can mix and match, i should think an item or three could update pretty much anybody’s wardrobe faster than you can say “i got this tan while on my mini-break in marrakesh.”

The subject matter of said article is the morbid accessories created by Reid Peppard under the banner of ‘RP / Encore‘. In order to get the scoop I bounced a few questions of the obliging lady herself.

YMLT: Most people feel that animals only to be worn if they serve function over form. What are your thoughts?

RP: I agree that general consumption of leathers meats etc aren’t treated with the appreciation and consideration they deserve. However, once an animal is dead I don’t see any reason as to why every bit of it shouldn’t be put to use both functionally and artistically. Otherwise it’s just a waste.

YMLT: How do you feel about the anger your work tends to attract?

RP: Well, most people actually seem to get the general concepts behind my work. The anger directed towards my work is usually from teenage girls who can’t see beyond their emotive reactions. Anyone who actually reads about these pieces will understand that most of what I do is simply preserving (with great care) creatures that would otherwise be left to rot and ruin in the streets of London.

YMLT: You’re a vegetarian, yet also work very closely with dead animals. Don’t you feel squeamish?

RP: No, I’m not squeamish at all. It’s a common misconception that taxidermy is this gory blood-n-guts sort of trade. It’s no more gruesome than a visit to your local butchers really. I was vegetarian/pescetarian before I learned taxidermy. That said, learning taxidermy hasn’t made me long for meat either. When you see how similar we are to all other mammals it seems almost cannibalistic to tuck into a rack of this or a leg of that. I don’t judge people who eat meat though…quite the contrary in fact. I know meat is good for you in many ways, and as I said before: once something has died, why not use everything you can?

YMLT: If you could source (naturally) one animal what would it be? and what would you create out of it?

RP: Hmmmm… I am particularly keen to get my hands on a couple Alsatian heads at the moment…

YMLT: What kind of people tend to buy your stuff?

RP: My work has been bought by all sorts of people… but I suppose the majority are men in creative fields like photography, graphics of fashion.

YMLT: Who has been your greatest influence on your creative output?

RP: I don’t look to other people for influence or inspiration.

YMLT: What are you working on right now?

RP: Right now I’m finishing up a commission for three wall mounted shields: a duck, a bunny and a squirrel with “disney happy happy faces”. Don’t ask…

Back to business. I can almost see champagne sales skyrocketing now as fashion weeks across the globe has swung into action. We’ve already seen what New York among others has to offer and I like what I see.

Someone who I think is worth keeping an eye on Davidelfin. I love hearing new names and although he’s had over 10 years in the business this is only his third show for New York fashion week. Here is Davidelfin.

the MVSICA album was designed by sawdust and  with a special coin thing, which you use to scratch of a non-permanent coating to reveal obvious information (track listing) and hidden gems of crafty aesthetic significance. the idea was for the design to evolve over time as the listener uncovered the nuances in the tunes.

This building was created by Robert Harvey Oshatz for the Wilkinson family in Portland Oregon. A futuristic mess which seemingly winds and tumbles like the tree canopy in which it invades. Magical.

in his own words: “it was one of the weirdest experiences of my life!!!” it turns out this film has quite a cult following and they are pretty devoted to watching it in late night cinemas and playing along with the script.

when there was a sex scene EVERYONE walked out saying “let’s get out. it’s the sex scene. we can’t see that!! sex scene! OUT!!” or in a scene where a spoon features on the wall of an apartment, the entire audience, minus my friend, started throwing plastic spoons at the screen, shouting “SPOOONS SPOONS SPOOOOONS!!!!”

yeah. that would weird me out too. check it out on youtube. please. it just might bring a little bit of amusement to your world and also a touch more appreciation for when cinema actually gets it right.

yes, apparently fugly is the new pretty. especially if you chose to obey (in a slavish fashion) the dress-sense of the famous the writers have chosen prey on. yes, it’s slebs in pretty fricken interesting (or straight out horrific) fashion choices, with witty discourse to prove it. whether or not they deserve their comeuppnace is always open to debate in the comments, but i have to say, i am a little bit in awe of their writing style. someday i hope to be able to write in such a scathing, hands-down LOL funny tone and not feel bad about it. until then, go fug yourself.

Nellis’ work isn’t something that i’m instantly drawn to – quite the opposite actually. But perhaps therein lies the appeal for some people. His drawings are quite disturbing, hallucinogenic visions replete with nightmarish imagery of giant floating eyeballs and hooded assailants.

I’m sure they’re frightening up close – and considering hollywood continues to pump out horror films, and tool still sell out, there’s clearly a market for this kind of artwork.

Sarah Harvey’s figure portraits are the fruit of an unusual technique. Often seeking out a third person to photograph her bathing in emerald waters, she then pieces together the underwater images to build pictures of herself or another immersed in, and obscured by, liquid and light. These she works up into large canvases that provoke an immediate response of curiosity, of desiring to engage with and discover the person through a fluid confusion of visual cues. In this way, Sarah approaches painting from a most original position: as both a form of hyper-realism, documenting her images with photographic accuracy, and at the same time an exploration into the boundaries of abstract painting, and of where the two disciplines overlap. Her ability to make this a sensual and enticing experience for the viewer marks Sarah out as a truly exciting young painter.

meanwhile at the turn of the decade, the idea of ‘new year new hair’ is hardly groundbreaking BUT the new colour palette of candy floss and italian ice-cream that certain fillies are going for has definitely NOT had a major fashion moment since the mid 80’s.  yes, the 80’s- when every girl’s favourite plaything was a plastic pony. why did we love them so (apart from the fact that most girls go through a horse phase and a pony counts as an even cuter smaller horse)? i think, looking back it was because of the fantasy colours they came in. it was all soft candy pinks and lollipop shades of blue and purple. and you chose your pony in accordance with your little budding personality (i was a blue girl. never pink, thank you).

…and little girls don’t grow up- we just get bigger. and we learn about bleach and we get bored. so here it is: 2010- the year of the my-little-pony-gilato-palette-mane-do-hair-thingy. i’m feeling a little pistachio right now.

Some smart person has done the obvious, yet crafty thing and put the two fonts side-by-side and overlapped to reveal their differences. In most instances Helvetica is clearly the simpler, more elegant font (see the angles on the r, t and c for example).

I wonder if this comparison chart only lists 10 characters because all others are identical? I might have to do some investigating myself…

Mr Anthony Cozzi of Denver Colorado grew up on a diet of snowboarding, cycling, hiking and the good ol fashioned treats of the great outdoors that we don’t get or understand here in London.

It comes throuh in his work. Anthony creates delightful pieces under the moniker of snowblinded that you can put up on your wall in your city – and go back to pretending that the outside world doesn’t exist.

Philip Brooker escaped from England twenty years ago and has lived and worked as an artist in the United States ever since.

Craigie Aitchison. Born in Scotland, Craigie Aitchison moved to London to study Law at the Middle Temple, but quickly turned to painting. He attended the Slade and in 1954 was one of ‘Six Young Contemporaries’ at Gimpel Fils.

Michael Craig-Martin was born in Dublin (1941) and now lives in London. His work includes sculptures, paintings and print-editions.

Since the 1990s his paintings, wall paintings, on-site-installations and prints have represented colorful, clear compositions depicting an inventory of graphically outlined items of contemporary life. Painted on monochrome backgrounds and featuring the ‘rich tapestry of life’ (Craig-Martin), the depicted motifs refer to our cultural background in many different ways, functioning like modern iconic images.

It’s his usual pop culture tip-of-the-hat that I feel brings these pieces to life. Nothing says i love you quite like a skull in an Adidas hoodie or a bird in a Gola sneaker.

He also had a fondness for triangles and space themes which I share. Not being blessed with the skills of craft myself, I decided to shoot a few questions Jack’s way to try and find out where he got the inspiration from, and how the heck someone begins looking at a blank page and emerges with a font.

How do you get inspiration for new typography?

I try and find inspiration wherever possible, and try and look in new places for ideas, it’s also a good idea to look back in time and see what has been done and draw inspiration from old sources.

How do you start a new font (pen & paper? Trial & error with vector lines?)

Always paper and pen, if it’s a type treatment, where it’s a one off piece of type, it’s almost definitely pen and paper, and then photographed or scanned and then created using vectors in illustrator and then played around with in photoshop.

You work for Empire design, but also do stuff for your friends (Di Sapia, Collage Club etc) do you find it harder/easier/more stressful having your mates as clients?

It’s easier, the work I’ve done for Tom and collage club has allowed me to have a lot of creative freedom, there was an element of trust, they liked my work and just allowed me to create whatever I liked, which resulted in something produced that we both were happy with.

What are you working on right now?

Currently working on updating my website, it’s been a while. Have a few freelance jobs on the go, doing a bit of design for music, which is always my favorite.

Who is your favorite/designer artist right now?

Right now, I’d have to say Paul Rand, was in a shop the other day and saw a book he’d put together for children, just the simplicity of the shapes and colours, no clutter just simple communication!

What’s your favorite font in the whole world?

Futura bt bold , I guess

Henrijs Preiss paints most unusual works that are at once both old and new, exotic and familiar to all. Having studied in the Academy system in Latvia and coming from a family of Latvian and Russian artists, Henrijs has an in-depth knowledge of the compositional and spatial structures used in the creation of medieval religious icons. Drawing on these pre-Renaissance composition methods, he then combines them with 20th century abstract painting and cabalistic symbolism, resulting in works that are unusually balanced for abstract paintings. They travel a long time line, speaking across cultures to the sensation of hidden meaning through their motifs, and exuding all the compacted power of ancient icons but in a contemporary painted work.

I absolutely adore these photos. the crispness, the technical proficiency, the sheer playfulness of a wonderous story portrayed in the underwater realm. I love the way she uses the two three surfaces (pool floor, water surface and the water itself) to great effect
Elena Kalis has been braving pruned fingers and taking underwater photographs for the past year. It sounds like she has a great time on her shoots, capturing the innocent play of children in one of their most favourite activities, heightening their joy with animal balloons and dress up boxes.

c) judging by the lack of signs of life in the eyes she’s merely a mannequin with a loose neck screw.

is this the look of:

a) fleeting guilt.

b) (breathlessly) “i don’t go out without my gucci by gucci!”

c) does this bottle make my bum look big, or are you  going to crop it out anyway?

and MOST confusing of all..

a) cold-blooded, cold-brained hatred?

b) “this is coming atcha head, bitch.”

c) a diabetic given an over-sized perfume prop instead of a mars bar.

now, we can allay all our fears as Marlies Romberg has done the awfully generous thing and gone and thrown a computer right smack bang in a desk! it even comes with lovely lazer etched keys and mouse!

We’re going to glance straight past the fact that the screen is annoyingly small, it’s a PC, the inset keys would give you carpal tunnel and we’d still be yearning to caress a sweet little apple magic mouse… and post it up here anyways.
