Check out this triptic of 6-sheets by London designer Radim Malinic. They’re clearly reognisable as a whole yet work individually to express the different angles and shopping opportunities of Melbourne’s QV complex. Great to see them arranged together.

Malinic uses different typefaces, colour palettes and subtle monochrome shape arrangements to keep each piece fresh. True to his style, they’re all blazingly bright and have a lovely sence of movement.

Sometimes I find graphic design work that relies so heavily on software manipulation quite distancing. Malinic’s work in this instance toes the line very well, and in fact I feel it’s because of the hyperreal digitised quality that gives these pieces a depth and makes them even more engaging.

doe-eyed delight (and fellow aussie AND hackney resident) rose byrne is my latest female obsession. she’s the size of a french fry, but on screen her beauty and emotive portrayal of a young american teacher in the film “adam” moved me to tears (the kind that stream down your face). ok, so at the time of viewing i was on a long flight and i had just said good-bye to my mother at the airport and i was under-slept… none of these factors negates the fact that age seems to have brought out the best in her personal beauty as well as her craft.

she was pure gorgeousness, inside and out.

“adam” is well worth devoting 2 hours of your life to, if you’re after a thought provoking film.

oh and rose, loving your style. you are in bloom!

many moons ago, i worked as a whipping boy in an ad agency (a real world one, not this digital biz i put my hand to now), as did a copywriter called Richard Stoney.

Renown for his copywriting prowess, he also had a reputation for wearing bright, tastefully garish pattered shirts- a particular fondness for paisley if i remember correctly. he’s still at said agency, and i bet he still loves paisley.

what’s changed though is he’s now put his succinct wit and penchant for patterns to use and created a very cool T for you to purchase.

it’s not often that a brand moves from online to showroom and has to creatively communicate that their store is like their website to their customers.

concieved by UXUS “Interaction” is one of four contemporary installations at H&M Sweeden’s HQ. the work highlights H&M Home’s transition from an online and catalogue retailer, to a physical showroom where one can indulge all the senses, especially touch.

A giant wooden display unit is 34m2 and presents a series of pulleys and levers that are attached to various products. An action causes a reaction, pull and push, discovering through the physical exploration of an analog search engine.

One gentleman who won’t shy from controversy – or let a death get in the way of a keenly-timed publicity stunt is Mr Kerry Roper.

The London based illustrator has combined the highly-contentious issues of Jackson’s death and religion to create ‘Michael Jackson RIP Tribute’. Rumour has it Roper has been personally handing out the below postcard to coincide with the release of Mr jackson’s latest film.

over 50 years Jackson evolved from black to white, Christianity to Islam and from life to death- dancing to the final day. Kerry Roper captured this perfectly.

cory arcangel is a cheeky fucker.

a default photoshop gradient, printed massively. It probably takes him about 10 clicks. but then again, top marks for the sheer audacity of it all.

When traipsing around the Brooklyn markets and stores a few weeks ago, i stumbled across a lovely lady selling jewelry crafted from bullets.

she handed me a postcard (which also featured a bullet casing attached – a nice touch) and i have been pleasently surprised at admiring the depth and craft of their wares in 2d now i’ve dialed up their website.

I’m also disapointed that i didn’t notice the toy gun necklace, and also kicking myself for not making a purchase… anna?

in one of his latest works, Matt has created a ball out consisting of 26.5km (or 250 rolls) of Gaffer tape.

I’m impressed. what do you think?

also in keeping with his penchant for manipulated found objects, matt works with ‘erased newspaper cuttings’ to create large scale abstracted images. beautiful and deranged.

i think tomorrow if i achieve only one thing, it is to re-create one of George Hart’s 72 pencils.

through the intersecting of four diagonal tubes, Hart forms a three dimensional lattice. it’s so blazingly, audaciously simple. however, from initial research at his incredibly well designed page, he made quite a career out of these limited edition scupltures.

the first example below for instance was commissioned by Jeff Rutzky, an NYC designer who primarily works with printers in the CMYK color space. the second was a commission for The International Society of
the Arts, Mathematics, and Architecture and features their own stationary.

according to George Hart’s site, a lot of the interest is around the form of the center of the piece. four tubes of eighteen pencils intersecting at 45 degree angles…
rumour has it the core is the pithily titled ‘rhombic dodecahedron’:

last week I took a lil trip to NYC. it was lovely. i spent my days meandering through the skyscrapers and traipsing around the MOMA, MET and Natural History museums. absolute bliss. apologies for the lack of updates.

After basking in the glory that is the MOMA, i headed across the road and into their design shop where i spied (amongst other things) this lovely little lamp. it’s produced by design house stockholm and is a re-issue of the 1999 design by Harri Koskinen.

It turns out that both parts of the block lamp is hand cast and undergoes an extremely long cooling process to avoid cracking later on if exposed to strong temperature changes. The matt bulb shape is sand-blasted. the resulting effect is akin to placing a light globe in the freezer.

i think they’re brilliant, but what kind of brief are they responding to? can’t see this selling the toy to new parents very effectively.
subsequently, i’m pretty sceptical whether they’re real, or some crafty art-director trying to boost their visibility.

but hey, take your tin-foil-ad-man hat off and you’ve got some visually stimulating and thought provoking press ads. *thumbs up*.

when we were walking through hyde park on sunday afternoon towards the serpentine gallery, lady worthington confessed. she admitted that she didn’t quite get jeff koons’ work. and whilst i didn’t express it at the time, neither did i.

take the below piece (let’s call it ‘doggy paddle’). on first glance, or when viewing online you can be forgiven to thinking it’s just a suspended kiddy paddling pool filled with wood. but how does it stay up like that without any sign of stress?

after reading the plaque i found out that the pool (like most of his work) was cast out of aluminum. it’d been sprayed to look precisely like plastic or rubber. i mean exactly like plastic. amazing.

all his works required a double take; subsequently each item had a full time member of staff purely to stop people from touching it to determine it’s authenticity- whether it’s aluminum or just plastic. the paintings too looked like collage, then airbrush, but on even closer inspection revealed highly-skilled brushwork.

in calling it the ‘popeye series’ koons references the loveable cartoon character’s catchphrase “i am what i am”. the problem is, we’re not ever quite sure what that is.

at least after our little outing we were a little closer to finding out.

“various patterns, keywords and rhythms found in the text of spam emails are into three-dimensional modeling gestures”.

whether or not it’s architecture or purely sculpture, i’m not sure. surely by their very definition of a structure for human habitation, buildings require some sort of human input? Or a creation with a human in mind? perhaps the code that use human text directed at human computers is enough in today’s society.

wouldn’t want to live there though.

the sartorialist – otherwise known as scott schuman – is coming to town, specifically Liberty. the street fashion photographer will curate a standalone space in the menswear department of the iconic department store to celebrate the launch of his new book, aptly named The Sartorialist.

published this month, the book features a collection of Schuman’s favourite photographs from his renowned fashionblog THESARTORIALIST.COM – on which he showcases the style tastes of real people, hunting them down on the streets far and wide to take their picture.

the specially-created space in liberty – dubbed sartorialust – will also be a culmination of schuman’s favourite sartorial things picked from throughout the store. a book signing will take place on september 21 while the space itself will be on show from september 18 to 30.

i can also tell you, he was born on 17 october 1977 in new jersey, USA and now lives and works in new york.

and here is a greater selection of his work. apparently he likes to ask models to take their clothes off and go for frollik. but i’m not getting any sense of a terry richardson sort of pervy eye thing going on here. ryan mcgingley seems to have a more sensitive, childlike take on the naked human form.

i love. here’s a selection from “i know where the summer goes”. there’s something poignantly reminiscent going on here. beautiful.

i made a trip to the the middle of england last weekend to revel in the delights of broken port-a-loos, over-priced burgers and radio-friendly music. yes, i’m talking about V festival!

skipping around the chip littered field in my little denim shorts (i was amused to note “little denim shorts” seem to be where it’s at fashion-wise, no matter what shape your pins and derriere may be…) i stumbled upon a real musical find.

a swedish band were playing in the union tent by the name of miike snow and they were AWESOME. i’d say they fit neatly in to the bracket of electro-indie-pop, but the soundscapes they create are (i counted about 6 of them on stage) are powerful, lush and layered when they go for it. some of the sounds made me think of outer-space… beautiful, grand and unhindered. just my kind of thing.

if you ever get the chance to see them live, they will be well worth it.

they are signed to downtown records and have just released a self-titled album.

here’s a snapshot of some of the gorgeousness found there… i feel like i fell in to a warm bubble bath of soft rose scented loveliness when i found this blog. thank God for beauty and the fact that we can appreciate it!

I get very proud when friends of mine are doing such amazing things. the mind boggles. at least here I’m able to promote them, and feel like i’m in some way connected to their brilliance.

Once such intrepid creative soul is fellow melbournite Genevieve Bailey. for the last 4 or so years she’s been traveling around the globe, hunting down and shooting 11 year old children. don’t worry, by ’shoot’ i mean ‘film’.
she’s interviewed kids from the UK, france, sweeden, Czech republic, Japan, USA, Thailand… the list goes on…

her documentary ‘eleven’ is currently in production and i’m sooo excited to see it one day on the big screen.

to paraphrase her website:
Eleven takes a look into where these “‘not quite kids, not quite teenagers’ briefly linger, between the frank openness and sometimes naivety of childhood, and the sharp and surprisingly brave wisdom and knowing of adulthood.”

there are many many model competitions these days, but not many that produce a pair of hotties that can enjoy instant commercial success.

but that’s what the next model competition was all about.

british clothing giant next went on the hunt through the UK with the final taking place at the old billingsgate market to find a guy and a girl to star in the next catalogue. it’s a job not to be sniffed at, as previous next catalogue models have gone on to become supermodels (carla bruni, claudia schiffer and heidi klum) or date cameron diaz (paul schulfor).

on the night, all the finalists gathered, strutted and lined up to be judged by a panel of judges and in the end, i think they made the right choice.

(oh, and the winners also won a contract with select models, which is quite an exclusive helping hand to getting started climbing your way to the top of the beauty heap.)

darlings, i’m sorry there has been an AWFUL lot of fashion chat of late… but tomagotchi just hasn’t had the time to post, so you are stuck with ME!

anyway. i’m not sorry at all, as i have found a fabulous designer from down-under: willow.

and i found these dresses on a gorgeous blog called white tea & wild horses, which sounds like a robert redford heartbreaker film for over 40’s romantics… but it’s not! it’s a truly pretty, pretty blog full of lovely, lovely things.

it’s pretty rare that an advertisement makes me want to skip around and do a little dance. but as much as i find it deplorable, i must declare it: stella mccartney, your ad makes me happy!!!

fashion IS the land of make-believe. and making-believe is truly at the heart of every little girl. and inside of every woman is still a little girl just itching to come on out and play all over again. and that’s why i think this ad is sooo wonderful. it’s almost art!

so, on to the ad: the willowy and fair-of hair-and-face ethereal woodland nymph is sigrid agrens (name to remember, girls)… and hopefully you recognise some of disney’s finest… even bambi has come to the party! oh it’s such a treat i could wall paper my house in it.

she may be a superstar of the 1990’s art world with most of her previous work consisting of high profile rock and rollers- kurt cobain, being the pinnacle of the celebrated bunch from the era that gave us grunge. but for peyton, her work is not about the celebrity or fame.

she says “i think so many people when they look at the work- me too, sometimes- see who the picture is of and forget that it’s an artwork… paintings take time and they become a concentration of a lot of feelings, not just a description of what someone looks like. i wouldn’t say i’m driven to make portraits- it’s more about people. people are just so interesting. they’re the location of many things: history, time, love.  above all things, love.”

yes, rankinlive is finally here.

the website in all it’s glory has finally launched and so will the exhibition in 3 days and approximately 22 hours, 20 mins and 2 seconds… (rankinlive is counting down on our behalf, thankfully). the exhibition will take place on london’s bustling brick lane, at the truman brewery.

if you can’t be bothered to go to the exhibition, do check the website out. it’s loads of fun. there’s a retrospective featuring his subjects from the queen to kate moss, along with the 1000 unrecognisable commoners he shot for the rankinlive exhibition (but some are transfixing, non-the-less). there’s an online magazine too. when you see what he’s done in his career, i’m sure you’ll feel quite in awe of the over-sexed, but diminutive brit that is rankin.

the darling tomagotchi gave me a gift. he thought it suited me…. make of that what you will.

basically, it’s an original bullet with titanium quartz wedged in, hanging on a dainty silver necklace.

i adore it for it’s strange and curious asthetic appeal (no-one seems to know what it is that’s hanging around my neck) but also (and cheifly) for the symbolic juxtoposition. it’s kind of like art to me.

the bullet represents destruction, war and ammunition, the quartz represents creation, purity and beauty.

sounds like life, huh?

this is my new favourite website! it enables me to people watch all day, every day, from the comfort of my desk. life just can’t get any better, can it?

well, it could… but sadly i don’t have the time or the financial necessities to actually go to the fashion hotspots of the world, so this website is the next best thing. it’s photographer seems to get EVERYWHERE and snap anything sartorially interesting that happens to be passing by! brilliant!

i mostly love it’s focus on paris (my all time favourite fashion city) and melbourne (where i grew up. still haven’t spotted old school friends, yet).

having already lent her fashion wisdom to the re-launch of Oxfam’s Camden store, salvage stylist mrs jones is back on the sartorial campaign trail, this time inviting you to get creative and customise a garment from old clothing or recycled materials.

To be judged by mrs jones herself – who has styled acts including the killers, kylie minogue, scissor sisters and goldfrapp – the winning designer will go on to have a one-of-a-kind item created for them especially by mrs jones. meanwhile, the top five shortlisted designs will be featured on the oxfam diy website.

“seeing as i’ve always shopped in oxfam, creating oxfam diy was the perfect opportunity to give something back. it’s a rare feeling in fashion to be doing something ethical, sustainable and worthwhile,” explains mrs jones, otherwise known as fee doran. “we’ve taken a look at people’s attitudes to fashion and consumption and are giving them the materials, ideas and confidence to create their own looks via oxfam diy.”

oxfam’s head of retail, sarah farquhar adds: “our range of second-hand clothing offers a wealth of possibilities for creative minds, and this competition will give aspiring designers the chance to have their work seen by one of the best stylists working today.”

this capsule collection of patterns created by Danish Designer Lene consists of wallpapers with transitonal elements to semi-semlessly merge from one pattern to another.

i think these could be perfect for designating areas for those of us who live in open plan spaces. a nice simple idea – but could be a bit much in smaller rooms.

We’re baaack!

after a week of being totally flat out at work, Lady Worthington and I managed to get totally flat out in Egypt for a week. a different kind luckly, mainly chillaxing poolside and snorkelling with some amazing fishies on the red sea. we even managed to float on the dead sea which was super duper – no doubt we’ll bore you with some photos in a couple of days..

anyway, apologies for the lack of blogging.

while everyone is spending all their time in virtual worlds and social networks, this is what it could look like if the reverse were to happen – mario in our world (same, same, but different to the film with danny de vito)

i don’t know if it will be any gooooood (stylisticly speaking- matthew williamson was thoroughly rubbish, but the ads looked great, which i suppose is job done. they just want us in the store and they know we will find something to buy to console ourselves over the disappointment that the designer range just looks weird on). but i have to applaud the big wigs at h&m HQs for their ability to pull in the big guns and marry populist, cheap chic trash with high-end, unnatainable rich-bitch snobbery for feet.

This project is the firstborn child conceived from a life-long love affair with photography and typography. The photo series was shot at an abandoned (and rumored to be haunted) ranch in central Oregon and the type was inspired by my early days as a screen-printer. These pieces complete the sentences that the pictures and the words could never quite say on their own.

2,559 of Wikipedia’s best articles are ‘featured articles’.
it’s these that rob matthews decided to press ‘cntrl + p’ on and print out (probably at work). the result is this weighty tome of some 5000 pages.
i believe his piece was to convey that it is only through computers that this amount of information becomes palatable, searchable and essentially useful.

The sheer volume of information stored on Wikipedia is massive. A text based archive of the English version takes up 2.5GB and if you include images, that number jumps to over 78GB.

If you were to print out the whole thing (not just the featured articles), this is what it would look like based on volumes 25cm high and 5cm thick (some 400 leaves), each page having two columns, each columns having 80 rows, and each row having 50 characters.

this lil-beaut of a short film is directed by tomas mankovsky with music composed by keith kenniff. for the first few moments i was thinking ‘oh, that’s some cute animation, i wonder what program they used’. turns out they used a whole load of patience, persistence and imagination (possibly included in Adobe CS5).

so tonight, like a whole bunch of the UK public, i found myself having a few drinks and watching Britain’s Got Talent.

lady worthington was bemused by the drastic change in simon cowell’s nose, while I was deeply touched by little Hollie Steel when she cried on stage after forgetting the lyrics.

I think lll she wanted was a carrot to munch on. here you go Hollie, a nice carrot for you.

after researching jim lambie, it appears that his usual creative out-put centers around themes such as brightly coloured taping of floors, and installations of trash/treasure including the kitchen sink. however a recent collection of work has surfaced from mr lambie, which features old chinese oil paintings of floral arrangements, cut up and layered over pop-culture poster children from yesteryear. grace jones, jesus and the mary chain and stevie nicks all get the garden treatment.

in jim lambie’s words: “the found flower projects are in keeping with my usual practice of using found or thrift-shop objects and especially music memorabelia. i combine pop posters with cut-up flower paintings which is essentially a collage. i like the way the flowers seem to grow across the images of the icons of pop, but they are anchored in a number of observations of actual events in the real world: someone carrying a bunch of flowers in front of them as i passed them in the street; someone sitting behind a vase of flowers in a restaurant window…”

i’m so charmed… and i wish i’d thought of it!

i think i say this nearly every post- it’s most often the simplest of things, or a simple re-imagining that makes the most incredible Images. we’ve all seen shots taken underwater, and syncronised swimmers on tv but this is a beautiful take on the subject.

alinka echeverría’s films and photography of synchronised swimmers constitues the series ‘lightness of being’.
a new angle that alters our perception of space, gravity and earthly existence.

lady worthington and i met fellow melbournite marcus keating at a friends house party a few weeks ago.
i was taken aback by these brilliant haphazard cast rocks that were hanging around his neck by a garish gold chain.
turns out he’d only just decided to cast & wear them about an hour before departing for the evening. also turns out he hasn’t stopped at rocks, but also cast sticks and twigs that he gathered from around fulham.

good stuff. no word on whether they’ll be popping up in selfridges anytime soon though.

the children’s world of make-believe has finally found the perfect outlet via jan von hollenberg’s sense of humour, some willing kids and his camera.

he brings the influences of his parents – a cinematographer and child therapist – to his work. his focus on the visual representation of childhood, ‘child-history’ and concepts of ‘playing’, come from his teacher training course and he combines these theories with his personal experience and childhood memories. inspired by classic childhood books as well as modern superheroes, he produces ‘dreams of flying’ since 2002 with children from his local neighbourhood in south west germany.

androgenous, yet with with ultra-long blonde hair, brit girl emma balfour was one of the more enigmatic of the models of the nineties.  i always thought she looked like she didn’t care too much about keeping up with fashion, which was what i liked about her. that, and her unique concoction of powerful/fragile/cold/dark/blonde beauty.
i just thought i’d mention her. i sometimes wonder what she’s up to now… anyone?

Norwegian are mokkelbost is the man behind the collage insanity that is ION.
i initially thought that he was yet another photoshop wizard, but further investigation on his site b-o-r-g.org lead me to realize that he spends a whole lot of time with scissors and glue.

these pieces took over three years to produce. the result is truly incredible. awe inspiring beauty, through terrifying imagery.

i don’t know much about your acting, but what i saw in about a boy was good stuff as far as i could tell… i’m sure you’re great on film. you do, however, turn out to be a real head-turner on the red carpet. for all the right reasons. you are a consistently elegant dresser and you never, ever look cheap. and i love green. it’s my favourite colour. can we be friends? i’ll let you borrow my clothes if you let me borrow yours. deal?

manual pandalis doesn’t just shoot black and white portraits. (i think he is actually more of a fashion and beauty photographer, judging from his body of work.) however these contrasting portraits are so striking and well juxtaposed i just had to write about these instead. i originally found manuel’s work when his agent came by with some portfolios for a breakfast book view. i chomped on croissant and stared, mesmirised at his huge collection of colourful, ultra-chic fashiony spreads.

anyway, this work below hopefully reminds us that we are all beautiful. beauty can’t be found in just one face; we all have a little piece of it in one way or another.

do you ever have that feeling you’re not alone? commuting in london, i wrestle daily with knowledge that i am sharing my personal space with folks i’m definitely not on personal terms with. they brush past me like i was never there and trip over my feet like it’s crime to have legs. why don’t people wait until you have alighted the tube before trying to board it? can’t they see me???…

graeme is scottish, but it looks like he managed to find his way down to london, via going to art college in birmingham. and what a worthwhile journey it was! i used to live right near where these shots were taken- hampstead heath. and i can tell you the light you can soak up on the peak of the heath is truly a blessing.

i like ami clarke’s modular disjointed pieces.
a common thread in her work seems to be the hiding of certain elements of a preexisting images. it’s all fairly understated very subtly alluding to the world beyond the frame or a deeper element that’s been hidden or removed.

i guess to the viewer at least, they’re the unknown unknowns.
