Europe Faces Plastic Bag Bans

My last blog entry focused on the introduction of both plastic and paper bag bans in Evanston, IL, a nearby suburb of Chicago where I live. My headline then was: “Silly–Another Bag Ban.” Well, today I received a shared press release to the industry from Heike Richter who handles the communication & public relations for IK Industrieverinigung Kunststoffverpackungen, the German Association for Plastic Packagings & Films, announcing that the European Commission appears to be aiming for a ban on plastic carrier bags in Europe. So from Evanston to Europe, we seem to have leapfrogged from local to GLOBAL silliness. (more…)

Close to my own home, the city officials of nearby Chicago suburb Evanston, IL, (home to Northwestern Univ. Wildcats) have proposed a ban on disposable shopping bags–both plastic and paper. Don’t know about you, but I’m getting weary of all this silly stuff. (more…)

Tragedy in Japan

Since March 11, I’ve been alternately sickeningly horrified and addicted to the news about the devastating tragedy that has struck Japan as the world’s third largest economic power. Aftershocks continue to plague the island nation, and media coverage steadily mounts covering the brave efforts of workers trying to stem the release of radiation resulting from the 32-ft tsunami that damaged the Fukushima Dai-Ichi Nuclear Power Plant. As one person, I have been at a loss as to how I can help in some capacity. . . any capacity. Finally, a corporation from our industry–probably one among many–has stepped forth to make a positive impact (more…)
