"Can you visit China being a Muslim?", I was asked a couple of days back. Of course you can. However, Yangshuo has but one halal restaurant and no Mosque or Surau. For many Muslims this means they will prefer to stay in Guilin where there is a good variety of excellent halal restaurants. And true, it's a little inconvenient but it's not impossible to get the most out of Yangshuo. After all, Yangshuo is only an hour and a half by bus away.

Around Yangshuo in this situation means what you can travel on foot, bicycle or motorcycle in a day from Yangshuo. And there are plenty of great options. Think of visiting the Fuli market, the sunset at Xingping or a boatride from Yangdi! it's quite easy to spend a week around Yangshuo and not even having time to explore the town center itself!

Xingping has become increasingly popular with tourists. Most travel here only for a few hours but the place is worth to spend a couple of days. The town is also an inspiration for artists and it has always plenty of painters active on the streets. And if you are interested in obtaining local produced paintings, traditional or more modern, Xingping is certainly cheaper than Yangshuo, Guilin or elsewhere in China.

So you want to come to Yangshuo but you are not sure if it is best to stay in Yangshuo or in Guilin? After all, the brochures all speak of Guilin as the place to be ... or not? Guilin used to be the best place to stay, but that was a very long time ago, say 20 years or even more. Nowadays you can find accommodation in all price ranges and better in Yangshuo. Usually people go cycling and rafting in Yangshuo. Hiking is not on the menu of most travelers. Still, there are some very good trails. When I write this, I have just finished this trail for the 5th time. It's really good and scenic.

In 1999 I think it was I met an extraordinary man who's name, I learned much later, was Daishen. He told me about his bicycle journey from Dalian to Dali and he done that 3 times, around 10.000km. When I met him again he had stationed himself in Yangshuo where he also died, now 2 years ago. Here is his story:

Nanning, a modern wide open city in south China near the Vietnamese border is also nicked the Green City because of it's parks and natural resources around the city. Although there is not a whole lot to do in town, it's still pleasant enough to wonder over the markets and sit in a park while waiting for your Vietnamese visa.
