Long Lasting Perfume – How To Make Your Fragrance Last

Don’t you hate when you spritz on your favorite perfume on your way out in the morning only to have it disappear by lunchtime? Fragrance may not be an essential part of a morning routine, but it’s a way for a woman to express herself and definitely makes a woman feel sexier, happier and more confident.

I checked in with Ildiko Juhasz, a fragrance consultant, on ways to make perfume last longer.

Chose a Perfume That Will Last

Citrus based fragrances usually disappear faster while musks and woody based fragrances tend to last longer because these oils evaporate slower, says Ildiko.

Regardless of what type of fragrance you like, the concentraion depends on the type of perfume you are using. Parfum contains the most oil and is the most expensive with the longest staying power. It’s followed by eau de parfum and eau de toilette, which is the type most suitable for everyday. Eau de cologne is the weakest scent and the least expensive.

Preserve the potency of your fragrances by storing them in cool dark places away from direct sunlight, suggest Ildiko. I always keep mine in the box.

Apply Pefume So It Lasts

Fragrance will last longer on skin that is well-moisturized, because oils on the skin trap the fragrance notes and make them last longer, says Ildiko. She suggests applying a body oil or moisturizer post-shower. When you apply the fragrance, concentrate on pulse points. These are areas where the veins are close to skin surface and you feel your circulation, including your wrists, neck, between your breasts and even behind knees. Don’t rub wrists together after applying fragrance as it breaks down the oils. She also suggests a light mist of fragrance through the hair.

Many fragrance lines also include shower gel and body lotions. While layering the scent in different forms will help it last, these products can be costly. If they’re not in your budget, chose body products that are unscented or lightly scented.

Don’t Overdo It With Perfume

Less is more! We tend to not smell our own perfume sometime after applying it, this is actually a defense mechanism and our olfactive systems shut down. This does not mean it isn’t noticeable for others. Especially as we age, our sense of smell begins to dull. The old trick of walking through a mist does work, but avoid applying directly on clothing as it can stain and also doesn’t diffuse the scent as nicely as the natural oils on your skin.

Reapply Perfume Throughout the Day

If you have dry skin or are headed out to a special evening, you can always carry a small travel size bottle with you as you may have to reapply, recommends Ildiko. As a general rule of thumb, fragrances will last 4 to 8 hours, depending on quality and concentration of essential oils.

Top 10 Spring Fragrances 2009

When spring arrives, the black and white world of winter seems to turn technicolor in splotches. The ground is mostly barren, but a patch of lurid daffodils lights up a parking strip, and a tulip tree looks like it has burst into white flames against the grey sky. Even the singing birds sound ridiculously cheerful, like a Looney Tunes short come to life.

Of course, I love it. And mostly I like choosing perfumes for spring that make the same garish splash in the cool, damp air. But sometimes moodier fragrances that reflect the dirt’s slow awakening seem more appropriate. Here are my current favorites for spring, not in any particular order.

Amouage Ubar. Nothing says spring like lily of the valley — light, ethereal, and tinged with green. Unfortunately, when I wear Christian Dior Diorissimo, I feel like I’m wearing someone else’s clothing. It feels cold on me. Ubar, on the other hand, is loaded with lily of the valley and sunny jasmine, but has a warm grounding of sandalwood and civet. I’m hoarding the few drops I have left in my sample sprayer.

Guerlain Chamade. Chamade’s elegant wash of hyacinth and galbanum sweetened by black currant is spring in a bottle. It’s chic spring, too — a spring where women tote Hermès bags and drink Sancerre at lunch. As an aside, I’m convinced that Parfums MDCI’s new Coeur en Mai is Patricia de Nicolaï’s take on Chamade. It’s green, fresh with hyacinth and rose, and brought up to the times with a peppery overlay.

Ormonde Jayne Champaca. Champaca has all the green of spring along with the presence to stand up to the chill in the morning air leftover from winter. Plus, Champaca smells unlike any other perfume I’ve tried, and isn’t something new what spring is all about?

Caron Fleurs de Rocailles. When the weather starts to warm, Fleurs de Rocailles (the original, not “Fleur” de Rocailles) is like a meadow of wildflowers heated by the afternoon sun. It smells innocent.

Niki de Saint Phalle. Niki de Saint Phalle, on the other hand, isn’t quite so innocent, but is insistent and unpredictable. Its marigold, mint, and galbanum surprise me every time I wear it, and the kick of oakmoss, sandalwood, and patchouli at the end keep me coming back.

Worth Je Reviens (vintage). Have you ever seen an old opaque green Firestone mug? If Je Reviens had a color, that would be it. To me Je Reviens is both charmingly old and surprisingly modern. It shines with a crystalline floral glow like a bouquet in a Jules Verne science fiction story. I like the vintage best. The new version is pale and limp, and Je Reviens Couture is too sharply aldehydic for my taste.

Jean Patou Vacances. Vacances is all sheets dried in the sun with the breeze blowing over the lilac bushes and a tender musk finish. It’s marvelous. Since it’s discontinued, try Frédéric Malle En Passant for a hit of springtime lilac.

Amouage Lyric Woman. Although it’s not particularly evocative of spring, I have to put Lyric Woman on the list because right now it smells good to me whatever the weather, whatever my mood. Plus, you can make a case that its frankincense and coriander reflect the mood of dim, rainy mornings in April.

Comme de Garçons + Stephen Jones. I was unsure about Stephen Jones at first. It didn’t seem to be my style. But for an urban spring, its violets awash in a tide of metallic aldehydes are perfect.

Piguet Bandit. Some people might argue that a leather fragrance has no place in spring. But I find Bandit to be a warm-weather leather if there ever was one. Bandit kicks off with a juicy green burst and settles into a leather than isn’t overly oily. For a more ladylike composition with a dose of violets, Bandit’s sister, Balmain Jolie Madame, is a nice spring leather, too.

Renew Elixir from Drops of Nature ~ scented body products

Renew Elixir is a fragrant essential oil blend created by the company Drops of Nature and designed to promote emotional balance and mental clarity. For me, Renew’s effects begin even before I unscrew the cap of its small bottle. This bottle, molded from frosted glass in the leaf shape and ornamented with a green tassel, fits comfortably into the palm of the hand, giving a soothing tactile sensation.

Renew Elixir feels gently emollient, thanks to its use of sweet almond oil; it absorbs easily into the skin, softly diffusing its scent for about fifteen minutes. In addition to the almond oil, Renew’s ingredients are essential oils with aromatherapeutic benefits: peppermint for alertness, as well as relief from headaches or nausea; bergamot and sweet orange for their uplifting effects on the mood; and lavender and clary sage for stress reduction. (Renew does not, on the other hand, include any parabens, phthalates, mineral oil, preservatives, etc.)

The mint note is dominant in this mix: it is clear and crisp, with a cleansing effect on the mind (and the sinuses). The citrus notes are short-lived, but they sparkle and mingle with the mint in a way that reminds me of a freshly mixed mojito. The lavender is smoothly blended into the mint, and the clary sage provides a subtle, earthy base that emerges after the oil has begun to sink into the skin.

Since its bottle is durable as well as picturesque, Renew is easy to carry in a handbag or backpack. I like to dab a drop on my wrist and breathe in the fragrance, or just inhale directly from the bottle, when I need a natural (but effective) pick-me-up. I’m finding Renew especially useful to have handy at my desk when mid-afternoon sluggishness hits me, or on a bus, when a long ride gives me slight motion sickness. Sometimes I massage a few drops into my temples or the back of my neck to revive me when I get home at the end of the day; it gives a slight tingling sensation. (Drops of Nature also recommends adding three or four drops of Renew to the bath, or applying it as a body oil after a bathing.)

I’ve been using Renew almost daily for the past few weeks; a drop or two goes a long way, so I’ll be using the same bottle for a long time to come. Its packaging also makes Renew a sweet gift for any friend or family member who needs a gentle reminder to take care of herself.
