London, 12 April 2011 – The Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has today announced the launch of The Cannes Creative Academy for Young Marketers, a week-long programme of structured and intensive learning specifically targeted to marketers and brand managers aged 30 years or under, working within a client organisation.

The Cannes Creative Academy for Young Marketers is sponsored by the direct and interactive agency Wunderman and will take place in Cannes during the week of the International Festival of Creativity 19-25 June. The new Academy will specifically address the importance and relevance of creativity in brand communications and strategy. The intense programme will provide a better understanding on issues such as the client agency relationship, current market trends and analysis, the creative process and how clients currently perceive their brand in the marketplace. The Academy is open to a maximum of 35 young marketers, who will be tutored throughout the week.

Commenting on their support of the new Academy, Wunderman’s Chairman & CEO, Daniel Morel, says, “The current generation has the accountability to train the next generation of marketers in the philosophies and craft of creative advertising. A tree can’t grow without roots. Creativity can’t be studied in books—the head, hand, and heart have to be thrown into the process—and that’s what The Cannes Creative Academy for Young Marketers is about.”

The Cannes Creative Academy partners with UCLA Anderson School of Management and its Office of Executive Education, a top ranked business school globally, committed to delivering research, innovative and highly applicable learning solutions which will greatly enhance the Academy experience.

Jim Stengel, Former Global Marketing Officer for Procter & Gamble has been appointed Dean of the Academy and will guide and mentor the young marketers. Jim is best known for reinvigorating P&G’s marketing culture by personally leading the transformation that has firmly established P&G as one of the most admired brand-building companies in the world. He oversaw P&G’s $8 billion advertising budget and was responsible for nearly 7,000 people. Under his leadership, P&G was honoured Cannes Lions Advertiser of the Year 2008. Since leaving P&G in 2008, Jim has continued with his passion to grow brands through a focus on higher ideals. He is President & CEO of The Jim Stengel Company, a think tank and consultancy company with a mission to inspire brand and business leaders globally to rethink their marketing to achieve higher performance. In 2009 Jim was appointed an Adjunct Professor of Marketing at UCLA Anderson and is currently writing a book, Grow, based on a global analysis of businesses that grow far faster than their competitors.

Working alongside Jim Stengel at the Cannes Creative Academy for Young Marketers will be course tutor Suzanne Tosolini, an independent consultant focused on consumer driven brand positioning. Since 2009 she consults independently on brand strategy and is working with an open innovation venture to indentify consumer driven brand solutions on mobile devices. She has worked with General Mills, Kraft, P&G, Meredith, VFCorp-The North Face and Michelin.

Jim Stengel says, “This is an exciting new idea from Cannes Lions. I am thrilled to be a part of it. Brands will get more business-growing, Cannes-quality work if they become better clients. Suzanne and I aim to make that happen for these 35 marketers. ”

“In 2010, 15% of the total delegates to Cannes Lions were client organisations. Increasingly more global brands attend the Festival eager to learn more about creativity in communications,” says Steve Latham, Cannes Lions Director of Talent and Training. “The introduction of the Young Marketers Academy will provide a unique platform for young clients to further engage with the creative industry and have a broader understanding of the creative process, which without doubt will assist in their brand building careers. We are delighted to be working with Jim Stengel and Suzanne Tosolini, both advocates of the value of creativity in brand communications, and to have the support of Wunderman, who wholeheartedly believe in investing in the next generation and UCLA Anderson Executive Education, whose mission is to educate and develop the management skill sets of the next generation of global business leaders.”

There is no additional charge to attend the Cannes Creative Academy for Young Marketers other than the standard Young Client registration fee which is €1,025.

[Editor's note: Nancy Maffucci, EVP, Global Communications, represented Wunderman on the WSJ Women in the Economy Task Force. Below she recounts the experience.]

At the recent WSJ Women in the Economy Task Force meeting in April, Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, told a crowd of 200 attendees that despite her accomplishments at Stanford University Law School (she graduated among the top of her class), no law firm in California would hire her because she was a woman. In fact, she went on to say, one partner in a firm told her “‘our clients wouldn’t stand for it.’” That was in 1952 and luckily much progress was made (there are now three women justices on the U.S. Supreme Court), but there’s more work to be done.

Justice O’Connor was among the leaders from government, business and academia that discussed the tremendous strides women have made in the workforce, their contributions to the economy and the viability of companies since the 1950s, as well as the disturbing evidence that progress for women in the workforce has stalled. McKinsey & Company also presented the findings from its most recent report Unlocking the Full Potential of Women in the U.S. Economy.

Women Warriors

Not surprising, the stories from Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Indra Nooyi (PepsiCo), Sallie Krawcheck (BofA), Marissa Mayer (Google), and others, were inspiring for both men and women to hear.

As Wunderman’s representative at the meeting, I believe one of the most stirring stories was from Dr. Sandra Witelson, the neuroscientist who analyzed Albert Einstein’s brain and found distinct differences between his brain and that of the rest of the population. Dr. Witelson has the largest collection of human brains in the world, so she used that as the control group to compare Einstein’s brain with the rest. She spoke so clearly about this massively complicated, not to mention intimidating, subject that all in the audience, including Justice O’Connor who was seated to my left, was whispering how amazing the research and her findings were.

Sallie Krawcheck, president of Global Wealth Management, Bank of America, was emphatic in her belief that “Nothing beats hard work. If you put your clients and customers at the center, you [will] come up with the right solution.” She also stressed it was very important to meet as many people as possible along the way. “The more people you can meet in person, the better off you are because it personalizes the relationship they have with you.”

PepsiCo CEO Indra Nooyi recommended women volunteer for spearheading the hardest business challenge or the most difficult turnaround assignments. She said “volunteer to do it because it will count three times the value of other assignments.”

Task Force Recommendations

Throughout the day and a half meeting speakers intermingled with attendees on industry and work level working groups. At the meeting’s conclusion, the Task Force provided recommendations to address some of the most important issues key to further women’s progress, including:

Increasing opportunities for women with P&L responsibilities;

Requiring greater accountability from the C-Suite for hiring women in the top jobs;

Committing to promote women on “potential” vs. “performance”; (see McKinsey research results which found men are more likely to be promoted on potential);

Developing more industry-wide and company-specific mentor and sponsor programs; and,

Augmenting talent management programs to broaden the channels and networks from which to draw top women.

One of the most telling findings from the Task Force and the McKinsey Report (attached) is the common thread among these most successful women that active involvement of men in the mentoring process was integral to their success. It’s not only about women mentoring women. What’s important is for men to mentor and sponsor women as well.

The complete 12-page JOURNAL REPORT is in the hardcopy of today’s WSJ. You may also link to it online here.

New York, April 1, 2011 — No, that’s not a typo.

Wunderman is getting a head start on looking for who’ll be the best of the best ten years from now. As part of Z AcademySM, Wunderman’s innovative international learning program for digital and design students, Wunderman is giving two teams of young future marketing students the chance of a lifetime—a trip to the prestigious Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival.

Not once, but twice.

How?
Maybe you’ve just started out in advertising. Maybe you’re not even in the door yet. Either way, you have stars in your eyes and are driven to pursue a great career in the ad game. One day you could be named Marketer of the Year. Imagine it is the year 2021, and you’ve just been named Marketer of the Year. Everyone will be asking, “What did you do to receive such an honor?”

Tell us. It can be in any format you want—an acceptance speech, your 2021 bio, a news report, a video reel, a portfolio of your future work, your obituary!—whatever you feel it takes to tell us the story of your next 10 years of success.

Did you create a new industry, a new product, a new communication channel? Or revive an old one? What was the main thing you did that caused the 2021 marketing world to have no doubt that you deserved the trophy more than any of your peers? And what wisdom or advice would you offer the next generation of marketers?

“We are interested in seeing how they will use the media channels in ways we haven’t seen. By virtue of the presentations, we will have it in their words,” said Matt Batten, creative director, Wunderman Sydney.

Download a copy of the Brief and Registration Form.

“I believe when as an industry we commit to programs that reinforce the creativity that people bring to our business — especially those at the beginning stage of their careers — we improve as a whole,” said Wunderman Chairman and CEO Daniel Morel

Be creative
Use all the digital marketing and innovative resources and tools you have available to you. Wunderman creative directors and executives from around the world will judge the entries to find the strongest vision of the future.

Two winning teams will be flown to the Cannes Lions International Advertising Festival to attend the Wunderman Global Creative Meeting on June 21, 2011.

And again in 2021
No matter where you might be, Wunderman will fly you to Cannes again in ten years’ time for you to tell us about your amazing career. Perhaps by then, you will actually be the 2021 Marketer of the Year.

Zeds get ahead
Z Academy is Wunderman’s international learning program for tech-savvy digital and design students. Since its launch, Wunderman has selected only schools that meet its criteria in collaboration, digital and design skills, and commitment to innovative learning models. In 2011, a total of nine schools from the U.S., U.K. and Singapore participate in the program.

Singapore, March 31, 2011–Stephane Faggianelli, president Asia-Pacific region, Wunderman announces a new regional organization and leadership structure.

Over the last five years, Wunderman has quadrupled its scale and presence across the Asia-Pacific region to become a digital powerhouse and full interactive, social, data and analytics capabilities.

With more than 45% revenue growth across Asia-Pacific in 2010 following a very strong 2009, Wunderman features a diverse and robust client portfolio; including some of the most admired brands such as Colgate, Disneyland, Ford, Land Rover, L’Oreal, Microsoft, Nokia, Starbucks and Xbox.

“With such a strong growth despite the recession and the successful integration of AGENDA within the Wunderman network, it is now a strategic time to scale up our regional organization. Asia-Pacific is a priority region and we have aggressive plans to expand further our teams and capabilities,” said Stephane Faggianelli.

With immediate effect, two new regional roles have been created.

Steve Hsia takes on the role of chief operating officer (COO), Wunderman Asia-Pacific with principal mission of overseeing the development of Wunderman and AGENDA operations across Greater China and South East Asia.

Previously CEO of AGENDA Asia, Steve Hsia is now expanding his management role to Wunderman operations and will remain based out of Malaysia. Steve Hsia will focus on driving new business, new offices and M&A developments.

Eric Ng is appointed chief client officer of Wunderman Asia-Pacific with focus on growing regional clients out of Greater China and reinforcing social media and e-commerce capabilities across the region.

Previously chief innovation officer of AGENDA Asia, Eric Ng joins the regional team and will remain based in Hong Kong.

Both roles are reporting to Stephane Faggianelli directly and will complement the existing regional organization in Singapore and Hong Kong.

Steve Hsia said, “I am extremely pleased to join the regional team and extend my role further. Our network is roaring full speed ahead and we have a great ambition to expand in these high potential markets.”

“Asia is noteworthy because it’s a microcosm of the Wunderman value proposition. This new organization structure across the region is a strong catalyst for future growth, particularly in the areas of digital marketing and analytics. It also demonstrates the value of strategic investment in digital agencies such as AGENDA,” said Daniel Morel, chairman and CEO, Wunderman.”

New York, March 24, 2011 – At the 33rd Annual John Caples International Awards, honoring the best in direct and interactive marketing around the world, Lester Wunderman was celebrated for his lifetime achievement winning the Andi Emerson Award. The award is presented each year to an individual for outstanding service to the direct marketing community.

Mr. Wunderman, who attended the ceremony with his wife Sue and a well represented group from Wunderman, received a standing ovation from the crowd of 300 guests at the Capitale in New York’s hip downtown.

Patrick Fultz, president and CCO at the DM Creative Group and president of the Caples presented Mr. Wunderman the award, saying “Wunderman the agency and Lester Wunderman the person created direct marketing as we know it. [He is] the man widely credited with coining the term ‘direct marketing’ more than four decades ago.

In his acceptance speech, Mr. Wunderman talked about the “remarkable world” he lived and worked in. He said “For a poor kid born in the Bronx, the journey has been nothing short of miraculous. The people I have met; political leaders, business moguls, artists, creative thinkers, teachers, colleagues and friends. What a life and what a time to have lived it. I am grateful for all of it.”

Mr. Wunderman said he became focused on creativity and persuasion and as he learned to create ideas for others, he had an idea for himself. He told the crowd “I wanted to leave behind the idea of how to make a living–and concentrate on the commitment to make a life….What I successfully searched for was an intellectual and imaginative business idea.”

The rest, as they say, is history. For Mr. Wunderman, the business idea was, and is, the remarkable business of direct marketing!

Visit DMNews for more from the evening and an interview with Lester.

The Caples was founded in 1978 by Andi Emerson, a direct marketing pioneer, in order to honor well-recognized copywriter John Caples.
New York, March 24, 2011 – As an integral part of Wunderman’s strategy to enhance its service to significant global accounts and grow local businesses, it is bringing together its offices in Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece to form a distinct region: Wunderman Southern Europe. Wunderman Chairman and CEO Daniel Morel has tapped Andres Narvaez to preside over the region. Andres will report directly to Morel. Previously, Andres held the position of CEO, Wunderman Spain, and will now be based in Madrid.

Andres will provide strong leadership across this region’s offices, particularly in digital and new business. He joined Wunderman Spain in 2007 and quickly made his mark. He turned around the business, delivered significantly higher profits year after year and transformed the agency into a digital powerhouse in the process. In 2010, more than 80% of Spain’s work was in the digital space. In addition to Microsoft, Nokia and Telefonica, Spain won important local business from BBVA, Heineken and La Caixa in key industry sectors, which have provided an important balance between global and local accounts.

“We’ve had great success when we organize around smaller sub-regions because it affords our offices and accounts more firepower to grow the business. It has worked in Central Europe and in North America. From a marketer’s viewpoint, the best results come when programs are present and leveraged in like markets,” said Morel.

Wunderman is the world leader in delivering clients creativity and innovation. We help brands find the right customers and facilitate consumers connecting with the right brands. Ad Age describes us this way: “Wunderman is among the best in the business a hot shop that delivered some of the best work of the year.” Our expertise in actionable data, analytics, insights and innovation is matched by our imagination. The result: Wunderman builds their brands, sales and business value. Wunderman is a part of Young & Rubicam Brands, a subsidiary of WPP (NASDAQ: WPPGY).

Austin, March 14, 2011 — QR codes and gaming, privacy and transparency, parties and people rallying around the tragedy in Japan. These are all the topics on the lips of those attending South by Southwest (SXSW) Interactive, a four-day melee taking place in Austin, Texas. The Wunderman network is right in the mix with speakers from Blast Radius, ZAAZ, and RTCRM all getting the conversation going.

“South by”, as it’s commonly referred to, is the place that put Foursquare and Twitter firmly on the map and the thousands of festival goers here are all looking to discover – or be discovered. The launch of the iPad2 has been marked by some here, but many were talking about the 22-year old wonderkid Seth Priebatsch, founder of SCVNGR (a mobile social gaming platform) and whether or not he is the next Mark Zuckerberg.

Inside the session rooms the debates and dialogues have been fiery. ZAAZ’s Rich Devine kicked off the Wunderman network’s participation at SXSW with a look at mobilizing performance from search.

The need for transparency and roles of social media, and the parts of privacy and responsibility play were themes at RTCRM’s Carlen Lea Lesser and ZAAZ’s Jason Carmel’s lively discussions. These sentiments were echoed at several other seminars and panels and the trend is clear: know what you want to do with social media and other media channels, and be willing to look the consumer straight in the eye.

While the talk is mostly tech, the ramifications are very clear: remain current or be left behind. “We know these days the technology solution and the creative solution walk hand in hand,” said Nick Moore, Chief Creative Officer, Wunderman in New York. “Ideas are cheap; it’s bringing things to life that really matters.”

The SXSW community is also rallying around the devastation in Japan. Several impromptu fundraisers as well as website http://sxsw4japan.org/ have sprung up overnight. Still ahead for SXSW is today’s opening of the 2011 Trade Show and a presentation from Blast Radius’ Pamela Villacorta on project management.

You can keep up with the live action and different perspectives either on Wunderman’s own Twitter account, the official website of SXSW: http://sxsw.com/interactive or, on our client Nokia’s blog: http://conversations.nokia.com/tag/sxsw.

NEW YORK, March 7, 2011—Driven by the mantra that all relationships are local Wunderman experienced an overall strong performance in 2010. Strong revenues and profits surpassed nearly every pre-economic crisis financial milestone. Asia and Latin America were hotbeds of activity, growing 47% and 30%, respectively. Partner companies like AGENDA, Blast Radius, Designkitchen and ZAAZ also excelled, validating Wunderman’s purposeful expansion and successful incorporation of their skills and resources.

Development in Asia

Asia serves as a microcosm of the Wunderman value proposition. Its strong foundation is rooted in four key accounts (Microsoft, Nokia, Ford and Colgate), which increasingly draw on the digital and analytics power of the network from KBM Group and ZAAZ. With the power of the network behind it, AGENDA won Disneyland, Gap and Pepsi in local Asian markets. Wunderman World Health, a new global service group, captured early traction in Japan, South Korea and China, that led to significant new business from Baxter, Pfizer, Guthy-Renker, and Sanofi. Wunderman also expanded by acquisition (Comwerks Interactive) and partnership with JWT in India.

Gifted & Talented

Wunderman’s global view of talent provides nimbleness to serve clients’ diverse global and local demands. Wunderman has a developed practice to track, manage and move talent—especially it’s most promising mid-level managers. The result is 80% of its top leaders have been in place for more than five years. In 2010 alone, 100+ people advanced their careers and Wunderman’s business through international assignments. Wunderman put its own twist on the search for new talent through Wunderman Zed Academy. This new take on apprenticeship taps into the world’s best design and digital marketing schools for the next generation of digital talent.

Media Acknowledgment

As a mark of its stature as a powerful global network, Advertising Age ranked Wunderman the world’s largest marketing services agency. In 2010 Wunderman’s presence grew to 142 offices in 59 countries, enabling us to execute everywhere and lending further credence to this mantra.

Advertising Age also ranked Wunderman number two on its 2010 A-List of “Stand-Out” agencies, citing new business from AARP, CVS Caremark, Tommy Hilfiger, Best Buy, Lilly, Cisco and Kodak, ever growing relationships with existing accounts (Microsoft, Nokia, Burger King, Sears and Citibank) and digital prowess as reasons for our strong showing. Senior creative talent was also recognized in Australia by Campaign Asia-Pacific (Best Digital Creative), in the U.K. by Campaign (Top 10 CD list) and in Austria by Horizont, which ranked Wunderman in its top 10 Advertising Agency list.

Analyze This

Analytics remains at Wunderman’s core, especially as its all relationships are local mantra gains relevancy. KBM Group, with presence in 21 countries, significantly expanded. Global clients like Microsoft and Nokia are leveraging its innovative Tagging Services Center, which creates and tracks tags across bought, owned and earned media. Acquisitions further broadened its service offering: I-Behavior’s predictive analytics and SKU-level purchase transaction data optimize performance across all channels; and, Marketing Direct Inc. deepens existing healthcare expertise. The results were recognized as KBM Group was ranked a leader in The Forrester Wave™: U.S. Database Marketing Service Providers, Q1 2011 with the highest scores in both corporate and global strategy.

A Lasting Gift

Wunderman’s founder and industry legend, Lester Wunderman, is still active in the company, meeting with both colleagues and clients every day. Mr. Wunderman marked 2010 with the opening of the Wunderman Archives at Duke University: a donation of documents and material compiled from the agency’s 50+ year history. The Wunderman Achives will provide researchers and students with a wealth of information on the industry from its earliest days to the present. Remarked Wunderman’s Chairman and CEO Daniel Morel on Lester Wunderman: “Lester serves as a reminder of the strength of vision and courage of conviction that are vital to be successful in our industry.”
