Yep, the 4th of July is here along with another temptation to over indulge with grilling out, hot dogs, chips, burgers, beer, apple pie, and it’s all good. When I belly up to the picnic table it's tempting to eat everything in sight, but I can avoid going crazy if I: &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Munch on fruits, veggies or other healthy choices before going after the fatty foods. I’ll bring my own to share at the picnic. This way I eat less of the junk foods, but still save room to “sample” them. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;Splurge on the things reserved for holidays like homemade ice cream or apple pie. I try to gravitate away from the chips, crackers and other snacks I can get any time.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div&gt;Once I fill the plate, I migrate somewhere away from the food. Many of us graze mindlessly if there's food nearby, so get what you need, eat slowly and give yourself plenty of time (20 minutes) to feel full so you don't go back for seconds or thirds. Using a smaller plate is also a trick I use to cut down on my portions.&lt;/div&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;div&gt;The ice cold brews are another opportunity to moderate, especially when it's hot outside. Unfortunately, alcohol can add more calories to your waistline than you might think. It can also dehydrate you, which is riskier if it's hot outside. It seems that if you are planning to have watermelon at your annual July 4th cookout, researchers say it has &lt;a href="http://www.supplementstogo.com/maen.html"&gt;Viagra like&lt;/a&gt; effects … but I don’t think we should throw away the little blue pills quite yet.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Citrulline is an ingredient in watermelons that can trigger production of a compound that helps relax the body's blood vessels, like what happens when a man takes Viagra, according to scientists in Texas, where many of the seedless variety come from.It is found in the flesh and rind of watermelons, and reacts with the body's enzymes when consumed in large quantities.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;This is then changed into arginine, an amino acid which helps the heart, circulatory and immune systems.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The researchers at Texas A&amp;amp;M's Fruit and Vegetable Improvement Center say &lt;a href="http://www.supplementstogo.com/arginandorn.html"&gt;Arginine&lt;/a&gt; boosts nitric oxide, which relaxes blood vessels, which is the same basic effect that Viagra has, to treat erectile dysfunction and maybe even prevent it. Bhimu Patil, a researcher and director also said that "Watermelon may not be as organ-specific as Viagra, but it's a great way to relax blood vessels without any drug side effects."&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other researchers at North Carolina State, find the results interesting but advised that anyone taking Viagra shouldn't expect the same result from watermelon.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The &lt;a href="http://www.supplementstogo.com/nioxprandbo.html"&gt;nitric oxide&lt;/a&gt; can also help with angina, high blood pressure and other cardiovascular problems, according to the study, which was paid for by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;It seems that around 60% of the citrulline is contained in watermelon rind more than in the flesh, and is found in all colors of watermelon. Yellow-fleshed types are the highest according to Penelope Perkins-Veazie, a USDA researcher in Lane, Okla.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;She said Patil's research is valid, but with a caveat: One would need to eat about six cups of watermelon to get enough citrulline to boost the body's arginine level, and with that much watermelon, you tend to run to the bathroom more.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Watermelon is also a diuretic used as a homeopathic treatment for kidney patients before dialysis became widely used.The relationship between citrulline and arginine might also be useful to type-2 diabetics or if you are obese. This is no matter how you count the proportions of fat, protein or carbohydrates.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Researchers funded by NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI) used 811 overweight and obese adults, aged 30 to 70, and assigned them to 1 of 4 diets. The participants didn’t have diabetes or severe heart disease but may have had other risk factors like high blood pressure or cholesterol.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The 4 diets all had the same calorie reduction goals and were heart-healthy, (low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber). They varied the levels of fat, protein and carbohydrates. The 4 diets were: 1) low-fat (20% of calories), average protein (15% of calories); 2) low-fat, high-protein (25% of calories); 3) high-fat (40% of calories), average protein; and 4) high-fat, high-protein. Carbohydrates ranged from 35% to 65% of calories.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The participants recorded their food intake for 2 years, had diet counseling sessions, and were also asked to do moderate-intensity physical activity like brisk walking, for at least 90 minutes per week.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;The report was published by the researchers on February 26, 2009, in the New England Journal of Medicine.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;They saw about the same weight loss in all 4 diet groups after 6 months and also after 2 years. On average, participants lost 13 pounds at 6 months and maintained a 9 pound loss at 2 years. The participants also reduced their waistlines by 1 to 3 inches by the end of the study. Craving, fullness, hunger and diet satisfaction were similar across the 4 diets.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Other studies showed that a loss of 5-10% of body weight will help reduce risk factors for heart disease and other medical conditions. In this study, 15% of patients achieved a 10% weight loss after 2 years. Consistent with previous studies, the diets all improved several known risk factors for cardiovascular disease.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;"This new information should focus weight loss approaches on reducing calorie intake rather than any particular proportions of fat, protein or carbohydrate," says principal investigator Dr. Frank M.
