Nicky Hayden In Doubt For Test Malaysian Circuit

Still doubt the presence of Nicky Hayden at the next MotoGP test in Malaysia scheduled next Tuesday at the Sepang circuit. Since inking a MotoGP sponsorship agreement at last year’s Los Angeles Motor Show, the relationship between Ducati and Mercedes AMG has been exclusively a marketing collaboration. That changes in 2012 with the Diavel AMG Special Edition, the first mechanical mash-up between the two performance powerhouses. Revealed at September’s 64th International Motor Show in Frankfurt, Germany, Ducati describes the model as a “two-wheeled tribute to the AMG luxury-sport brand.”

Unlike Mercedes AMG automobiles that offer significant performance and handling upgrades, the Diavel AMG is unfortunately just a cosmetic exercise. The Special Edition adds AMG’s signature five-spoke wheels, carbon-fiber radiator grills with aluminum trim, an AMG-styled exhaust system and a special ribbed seat upholstered in Alcantara. The Testastretta engine remains unchanged.

In addition to AMG branding and a numbered plaque on the fuel tank, each Special Edition Diavel will have its cam timing “authenticated” by an engine technician whose name is then engraved on the left-side engine case—a charming if trivial touch, since the cam timing of every Ducati is set by hand. If you can’t afford the Diavel AMG, a line of coordinating leather jackets and helmets will be available for “passionate connoisseurs of technology, engineering detail and exclusive style.” Pricing or production numbers weren’t available at press time, but if you want a special-edition Diavel you had best act quickly. The Diavel sold out in America in 2011, and demand is expected to be just as strong next year.

KTM Announces Moto3 Factory Team Riders for 2012

KTM, which returns to MotoGP competition in 2012 to contest the new Moto3 class, has announced the rider lineup for its Red Bull KTM AJO Factory Racing team. The three-rider team combines experience and youth and is to be spearheaded by Sandro Cortese of Germany. Arthur Sissis of Australia and British rider Danny Kent join Cortese in the KTM factory team.

Cortese is coming off a very successful 2011 season in the 125 cc class, which has now been phased out in favor of Moto3. The German rider won two GPs in 2011 and was on the podium on four other occasions for his three second places and one third place to finish the season in a commanding fourth overall. Sissis was a strong contender for the highly competitive Red Bull MotoGP Rookies title in 2011 but in the final race had to concede to eventual winner Lorenzo Baldassarri, who stays one more year in the Rookies Cup. Kent, who finished second in the 2010 edition of the Red Bull Rookies Cup, has already completed his rookie year in the 125 class, finishing a creditable 11th overall.

Pit Beirer, head of KTM Motorsports underlined that once again KTM relies on strong partnerships and key figures in the company's factory teams in what he says is the beginning for a strong commitment to this long term project. KTM counts on a strong partnership with Red Bull and Ajo Motorsport for the main factory team, which will run the 100% made and developed KTM bike, but also with Kalex Engineering, which is producing a parallel concept for the 250 cc single cylinder four-stroke bike to be fielded by other customer teams.

Pit Beirer: "We are very pleased to have a team manager of the high caliber of Aki Ajo in charge of KTM's Moto3 factory team. We can also be proud that someone of the managerial status of Jorge Martinez will be involved with the Kalex- KTM bike for his Moto3 team."

Ajo will have another two riders on the KTM Moto3 factory bike in parallel teams, and in total, including the customer teams running the Kalex-KTM bike there will be nine KTM Moto3 riders on the grid of the competition.

Aki Ajo: "The new season can provide some very exciting races, and naturally as a KTM Factory Team we hope to be right at the front from the start. We have a strong package so our aim is to be at the top of the new class. This is going to be a learning season for everyone but for us this is a long-term project and each year we can gain more. First priority is to establish the operations in the new class during testing, and then to keep things well coordinated and running smoothly. I feel once we get the ball rolling, the results will come."

KTM'S re-entry into the MotoGP competition in the Moto3 class is a natural progression from its longer-term commitment in the Red Bull MotoGP Rookies Cup, which it has supported as bike supplier since the competition first began. This highly competitive series for younger riders provides a fast track for emerging talent to enter into road racing at top international level. It is also an indication of KTM's commitment to foster the next generation of talent in the sport, a natural extension of its "Ready to Race" philosophy.
The new Moto3 engine was first fired up on the KTM Racing test benches on August 26 and since then comprehensive testing has been carried out. The project is on track and on time with its preparation for re-entry onto MotoGP when the 2012 competition begins.

The Japanese factory saw lone rider Alvaro Bautista finish 13th this season but have now ended their 37-year stay.

A statement read: "Suzuki Motor Corporation has decided to suspend temporarily its participation in MotoGP from the 2012 season.

"Having an eye on returning to MotoGP in 2014, Suzuki will now focus on developing a competitive new machine."

Bautista had already announced that he has joined Gresini Honda for next season as a replacement for the late Marco Simoncelli.

Suzuki's withdrawal leaves just Honda, Yamaha and Ducati as manufacturers with full factory teams on the grid for 2012.

"This suspension is to cope with tough circumstances mainly caused by the prolonged recession in developed countries, a historical appreciation of Japanese Yen and repeated natural disasters," Suzuki said.

Suzuki first competed in the top class of grand prix racing in 1974, and saw British legend Barry Sheene take two world championships in the 1970s.

Kenny Roberts Jr was the last Suzuki world champion, taking the 500cc title in 2000.

Gary Speed Found Dead At Home By His Wife

Gary Speed's devastated wife Louise found his body after he hanged himself at home yesterday.

The football world was in shock as they mourned one of the game’s true gentlemen.

Players, former stars, friends and fans were left reeling by the 42-year-old's apparent suicide, which came just hours after he happily chatted and joked on Saturday lunchtime’s BBC Football Focus show. Tributes poured in for the former Leeds, Everton, Newcastle and Bolton star.

Speed was found hanged at his home in Huntington, Cheshire, by Louise at 7am yesterday. Police said the death was not suspicious.

Speed moved into the impressive Huntington Hall, surrounded by fields, three years ago with Louise and their two sons, now aged 13 and 14.

Just over six hours after the body was discovered a silver private ambulance was seen leaving his home followed by a marked police car.

Officers said a family tribute will be released at a later date.

Close mate Robbie Savage broke down as he spoke about Speed during his 606 phone-in show on Radio 5 Live and ex-team-mate Shay Given wept during Aston Villa’s match with Swansea yesterday afternoon.

Craig Bellamy withdrew from Liverpool’s clash with Manchester City after hearing the news.

Football Focus host Dan Walker told how dad-of-two Speed was “bubbly” during filming with “no hint of a problem”.

He tweeted: “Staggered by the news of Gary Speed’s death. Was with him for most of yesterday. I genuinely cannot believe it. Thoughts with his family.

“Gary was full of life… talking about his kids, bright future with Wales, Twitter, golf. Can’t get my head round it. So sad. As he left he gave me a warm handshake and said ‘Thanks.’ I replied: ‘We might even have you on again.’”

It is thought Speed also chatted with ex-Toon team-mate Alan Shearer who was filming Match of the Day.

Shearer said: “Gary was a magnificent person, bright, fun and a wonderful family man. He lit up every room he walked into. I am proud to have been his friend and will miss him dreadfully.”

Mirror columnist Savage, who played alongside him for Wales, told how he had spoken to his pal on Saturday and he was “laughing and joking”.

Manchester United striker Michael Owen tweeted: “Just cannot believe the news regarding Gary. We waved at each other a couple of days ago dropping our kids off at school. I’m numb. He has died aged 42. So sad.

“He lived local to me and we knew his family. He leaves behind 2 sons. Tragic.”

Former Wales manager Bobby Gould, who was at the Swansea match, said: “People are just stunned. I saw John Hartson earlier and I said ‘have you heard about Gary?’ The big man just cried and cried. We cuddled each other. Gary was the ultimate professional.”

A planned silence at Swansea’s Liberty stadium turned into a minute’s applause and fans chanted: “There’s only one Gary Speed.”

Tributes, scarves and shirts were piled high at all of the home grounds of clubs Speed represented during his illustrious career.

Two bouquets were placed outside the home of Speed’s parents Roger and Carol at Queensferry on Deeside. His death was announced earlier by the Welsh FA. A statement said: “The Football Association of Wales are sad to announce the death of the national team manager Gary Speed.

“We extend our sympathies and condolences to the family.”

Neighbours Fred and Helen Hewitt told how they had a “friendly passing and waving relationship” with the popular star.

The Aspar Team is expanding their MotoGP effort next season to two bikes, with Randy de Puniet and Aleix Espargaró piloting the Aprilia powered CRT machines.

The Aspar Team has joined the list of teams to compete the 2012 season with CRT (Claiming Rules Team) bikes. In addition, the team will have two riders, Randy de Puniet and Aleix Espargaró.

De Puniet had the opportunity to complete two days of testing with the Aspar Team, and feelings of both sides have been magnificent. For years, the relationship between Spark and Ducati has increasingly narrow. For 2012, the manufacturer of exhaust systems has paid particular attention to two particular models of the Borgo Panigale. For the Monster 1100 Evo , Spark has created a kit of standard exhaust passage, to respect the original lines of the bike, with a couple of rounds stacked silencers. Alpinestars Tech Air Race Has, The Overalls With Integrated System Airbag

Another innovation in the field of driver safety on the track. To protect this time is the new suit created after 10 years of studies and research from Alpinestars , and it's all made in Italy! It 'was presented in Milan last week, before a large audience of journalists and the presence of the great Randy Mamola . It's called Air Race-Tech and is a suit for the last generation born track use, as it has been tested over the years even from the MotoGP riders. The peculiarities and the main feature of this suit is the built-in airbags, located at shoulder height and can reduce the possibility of damage if dropped.

The research started back in 2001, with extensive testing on the track and many other proposals. Eventually, about two years ago, Alpinestars has finally opted for a solution airbags managed by an electronic and fully autonomous (wireless system). The suit is the backbone of the entire system and allows the pilot to turn the track light, comfortable and with maximum security "shoulder" . The end result is a patented system called Dual Charge : airbag specifically designed by the shoulders and a dual charging system with cold gas ignition fireworks. In this way the rider can count on to have another chance to protection in the event of a fall and immediately return to the saddle.

At this point one would think why the Tech-Air Race is limited to the protection of the shoulders. Ten years of study served just that, and that is to be found (after a careful collection of data) that in most of the falls on the track, the pilot suffered damage mainly to the upper torso , just behind. The same technology used for the protection of the shoulders could be used in other more delicate parts of the body, but of course the increased use also means more weight, which would have greatly affected the comfort in the seat. Ducati has finally unveiled at this week’s EICMA Show in Milan the much-anticipated 1199 Panigale superbike. The new model finds its roots in the Borgo Panigale (pronounced "Pan-ee-gah-lee") area of Bologna - an Italian territory known as "Motor Valley". The new model will go on sale in early in 2012 in three different versions: Panigale $17,995, Panigale S - $22,995, Panigale S equipped with ABS $23,995(USD) and Panigale S Tricolore $27,995.

The new 1199 Panigale weights only 418 lbs and is powered by a re-designed V-twin engine with an output of 195 HP and 361.5lb of torque. This output will transform the Panigale into the most powerful twin-cylinder production engine on the planet.

The bike will be offered with the latest-generation sports ABS system, Ducati Traction Control (DTC), Ducati Electronic Suspension (DES), Ducati Quick-Shift (DQS), Ducati’s new race-derived Engine Brake Control (EBC) and Ride-by-Wire (RbW).

"Throughout our long and successful twin-cylinder history of racing, Ducati has never built a sportbike as advanced as the 1199 Panigale," said Claudio Domenicali during the official presentation. The 2011 edition of this classis race on four wheels, held November 24-27 at the Monza circuit, will have an extraordinary line up of participants and will include a tribute to Marco Simoncelli.

Stars and fans of MotoGP rounded off the season in Valencia raising €27,000 for Riders for Health.

Hundreds of people came out to support the official charity of MotoGP at Riders for Health’s annual fundraising event, Dià de los Campeones, at the Ricardo Tormo circuit in Valencia on Thursday.

The Spanish Day of Champions, organised by Riders’ local volunteer group – Motos Solidarias – raises thousands of pounds every year to support the organisation’s crucial work in Africa and gives fans the chance to experience behind the scenes of the world’s premier motorcycle racing series. The money raised at the event will help mobilise more health workers with reliable motorcycles so they can deliver lifesaving health care to remote rural communities.

Despite the rain, dedicated fans were able to walk down the pit-lane and see MotoGP teams in their garages gearing up for the final race of the 2011 season. The riders generously gave up their time to sign autographs and pose for photos with the local fans.

Lucky ticket holders were given the rare opportunity to ride around the Comunitat Valenciana Ricardo Tormo Circuit. Leading the three lap ride-in was Riders’ co-founder, Randy Mamola. Randy was also joined by Red Dwarf actor Danny John-Jules, BBC MotoGP presenter Matt Roberts and Yamaha dealer Steve Keys. Having left London five days earlier, the trio arrived at the circuit to complete their Viva Valencia motorcycle adventure in aid of Riders for Health. The highlight of the day was the famous Riders for Health MotoGP auction. Stars from all three racing classes took to the stage to auction off signed t-shirts, caps, racing boots and gloves. MotoGP riders Dani Pedrosa, Hector Barberà, Toni Elías and Alvaro Bautista were popular with the crowd while, from Moto2, Marc Márquez, Aleix Espargaró, Julián Simón, Esteve Rabat and Pol Espargaró came to show their support, as well as 125 riders Nico Terol, Maverick Viñales and Efrén Vázquez.

Dani Pedrosa was joined on stage by two female fans who read a moving letter in memory of MotoGP rider Marco Simoncelli who was tragically killed in a racing accident at the Malaysian GP. Everyone in the crowd was in agreement when the girls said Marco’s untimely death was a loss to the whole motorsport community.
