I think everyone remembers what they were doing when they first  heard the news and we all watched as the events unfolded that have now changed our lives forever.

Take a moment to remember all those that lost their lives, the brave men and women that went into the buildings to save people and died or are now still recovering from their injuries, and the brave people on flight 93 that fought back.

We will never forget.

Seriously, do you? 

Why do you charge what you charge? 

Did your mommy tell you what to charge?  If she did that’s ok… 

Or did you ask some of your DJ friends?  Were they sober when they answered?

Oh wait, I know, you went on Craigslist and felt all the DJs on there were your competition… so you wanted to be competitive.  You even went over the top and bought a second mushroom light because everyone else only had one.

Or did you actually look at DJing as a career possibility (you know you can make a career out of being a DJ, I do) and try to figure out what you need financially to make it work.

For those of you that are vets in the DJ business or if you are new, here are some things to consider before you just blurt out a random price for that next gig.

The best way to figure out what you need to charge is to have a business plan. A well written plan will spell out exactly what you want to do, what you need to do it and where you eventually want to be. 

Get a calculator

I am basing the following calcualtions on a single DJ. Obviously, you need to fill in your own numbers.

How many gigs will you play in a year? 

There are 52 weekends per year.  You probably won’t play every weekend, so to be safe let’s say you will have 50 gigs this year.  It’s better to estimate low when figuring out stuff like this.  Remember, if you work more than what you’ve budgeted for, GREAT!  You are successful and making money. 

Gear

First, how much did all your sound and lighting equipment cost you?  Did you know that it won’t last forever? Typically you can expect amps, CD players, lights  and speakers to last for 3-5 years.  

Assuming you spent $5,000 on your sound and lighting gear, let’s plan on replacing it in 5 years.  At 50 shows per year, that’s 250 gigs before you retire it.  $5,000/250 = $20

Music

You are paying for your music right?  With all the great music services available for DJs, there is no excuse not to be legit and have a subscription.  For arguments sake, let’s just say you spend $60/month on music.  $720 per year/50 shows = $14.40 per gig to have the tunes you need.

BTW, if you are downloading you music for free or bought a hard drive from someone, you are hurting the artists who make the music.  What would you do if your favorite artists stopped producing the hits?   Get your music legitimately. Communications

Do you have a business phone line, a cell phone, fax line, internet?  Most of us do.  $150 month is $1800 a year/50 = $36 per show that pay for your business communications.

Liability Insurance

If you don’t have it, you need to get it.  It costs about $250 per year to cover your ass if you drop a speaker on someone’s head or if grandma breaks a hip tripping over one of your cords.

$250 / 50 shows = $5 per gig to have proper liability insurance.

So, thus far we are at $75.40 before we even load the gear and head for the gig.

So, what about the gig?

How will you get there?  Do you have a dedicated vehicle for transporting your stuff?  If your car payment and car insurance is $400/Month, divide $4800 by 50.  That’s $96 per show. 

Where is the gig?  Fuel is generally still around $3.00 per gallon. Most trucks or vans get about 15MPG.  remember to calculate the round trip cost.  50 miles round trip is a good number. $20 for fuel. 

Ok kiddies, we are up to $190

Don’t forget about:

1. Parking fees
2. Meals on the road
3. rental fees (u-haul, extra gear)
4. Roadies 

NOW- Pay your self!  Hopefully you are worth more than minimum wage when you DJ.

So, after looking at expenses, does it make you wonder how some DJs can afford to work all night for $120? 

When I started spinning in 1985, I was making $50 per hour. And that was before all the inexpensive gear, music subscriptions and the internet. I had to buy all my CDs ($11-$15 per disc, just to get one good song).

So for DJs in the year 2010 to charge $25-$40 per hour is completely ridiculous. 

It doesn’t matter if you have a "Day Job" or if you are doing it "Just for fun", it’s stil in your best interest to cover your "actual expenses" when you gig.
