Many high school student athletes will wait until the last minute to begin the recruiting process. Many felt that their coach would help them along the way but it has not happened for them. I know this because I, as a college recruiter, have had to fix this problem in years past. It’s too bad for many seniors who find themselves on the outside of the college recruiting world.

Getting recruited for college is not easy and it does take a lot of time to work the process.

My point here is that if you’re a high school senior and your season is over you should have the colleges you want or that want you already in place. If not, then say hello to working at a low paying job. No, not really but I have seen where parents and athletes are slow in the process of getting their name out there for recruiting.

Another reason that so many parents and student athletes move slowly is because of no real understanding of the college recruiting process. Many parents, who are the leaders in young people’s lives, are often the ones who make the biggest mistakes in recruiting.

Mistakes, like thinking that they’re ok and have all the schools they need, (big mistake) or that by playing on a good team should help (another big mistake). Recruiting does not make since, it never has and it never will.

My best advice would be to start early and get as much information as you can on how the college recruiting process works before it’s too late.

Getting college recruiting help is a serious situation for all high school student athletes who wish and dream to play in college. Most have game and skills to impress a huge number of college program but the problem, like so many others, is exposure. As hard as you work on your game and as hard as you excel in the classroom, nobody knows who you are. 

This is a major problem that many high school student athletes have to deal with every year and, by no fault of their own, they go unnoticed and unrecognized by college coaches.

Many out there who follow high school sports closely will say, “If you’re good enough they will find you.” That statement is ridiculous because there are more high school athletes than there are colleges to recruit them. 

Some high school athletes out there will be lost in the college recruiting shuffle no matter how good he or she is. That’s just the way it is. I believe if you are good enough at the high school level that there is a place for you at the college level. The college recruiting process does not make sense to most parents. There are too many twists and turns that parents and student athletes must deal with and it can become frustrating at times.

There is no easy answer or solution for why a high school student athlete loses out on getting recruited. I’ve talked about this subject many times before and will continue to do so. My goal is to help student athletes and parents with every aspect of the college recruiting process.

To all high school student athletes: have you done everything possible to reach your fullest potential athletically? College programs are only looking for the best high school student athletes. What are you doing right now to put yourself in the position to be recruited? Are you working on your game every day? Are you studying every day in preparation for the SAT or ACT tests which are critical in the college recruiting process? Do you play on a travel team?

The point here being the more exposure to college coaches you have, will only increase your chances of being recruited and ultimately placed in college. The college recruiting process is something that you should not start at the beginning of your senior year or mid-way through your senior season. You should be fully into a college recruiting process no later than your junior year of high school.

High school ballplayers everywhere remember this: you will only get one chance to go from high school athlete to college athlete and you want to do everything in your power to ensure college recruiting success.

basketball coach Leon Hines was arrested yesterday (11-10-09) for possession of marijuana.  There was a drug sweep at Shaw High School in East Cleveland, Ohio and the head boys’ basketball coach was caught with marijuana. Shaw high school is predominantly African-American and Coach Hines is African-American and a role model to the young men he coaches every day therefore, I think he should be fired from his job.

There are some in the East Cleveland community who feel that coach Heinz’s arrest for marijuana possession is no big deal and someone said that ‘we’ve all smoked marijuana at some point in our lives’. I believe people who are in positions of authority and positions where they are leading young African-American men should be held to a higher standard. The city of East Cleveland is a city desperate for strong role models: people who are leaders, who are held at higher standards than all others because of their positions and responsibilities to the community. East Cleveland, Ohio is a city with many problems and having its boys’ basketball coach arrested for marijuana possession just gives that city another black eye.

Being held accountable for your actions should be 100% absolute and this sort of behavior from a basketball coach at the high school level should never be tolerated. If this behavior is tolerated, then what will happen next? Will it be okay to cheat on games or cheat in the classroom or not conduct ourselves in a professional manner? If this coach is not held to high standards, then there are no standards, there are no rules and anything goes.

There is a reason why there was a drug sweep at Shaw high school in East Cleveland, Ohio; there is a problem with drugs at that school and it was necessary to do a drug sweep to protect the students and the community of East Cleveland, Ohio.

Leon Hines should be fired right now. There should not be an investigation or prolonged discussions about what he did. What he did may not seem like a major crime but situations like a marijuana arrest or any other arrests should not be let go or let it be business as usual in the city of East Cleveland, Ohio.

There are few African American role models these days and there are fewer fathers in African-American households so there needs to be more African-American men to step up and be role models and show great leadership.  Coach Leon Hines has shown bad judgment in his actions with marijuana being found in his car on the grounds of a high school.

A strong message needs to be said to individuals who are in positions of leadership; that if you break the rules you should be punished and that’s what should happen to coach Leon Hines.

How many times have we heard the term “The First Black”? This is in reference to Blacks becoming the first in their race to be “The First” at something major or monumental as it relates to sports.

To me, the term “The First Black” is now very old and outdated. Sure, Blacks are making progress in this country. We now have a Black President. Great! Fantastic! I was just as excited when he won the election. But now, no matter what color he is, he still has to get the job done. And the same is true for the first Black Head football coach or baseball coach or the first Black to referee the Super Bowl. Give it a rest; let it go!

 I know 40 years ago and even longer than that, African-Americans were not given the opportunity by White folks to do anything. White people held the power and control. He, who held the money, owned everything. Times changed. Attitudes are changing and there are more opportunities out there for everyone. So this is why I believe there is too much of this “The First Black.”

Thing is, you always hear when an African-American is “first” to do something. We are all people. Maybe we do not all think the same or act the same or live in the same neighborhood or go to the same school, but who cares? We all need each other in one way or another; Black, White, and whatever the color or race!

 It used to be exciting back in the day when an African-American was the first to do something; whether it was in sports or entertainment or politics. Sure, it made news but that was 40, 50 years ago. I think attitudes have changed a lot when it comes to the first black to do something special.  Who cares if you’re first or second? I was first in line today! Should that have been front page news? Of course not. Just like I don’t think being the first African-American to do something special is a big deal anymore, but you will still hear that term being used when the next African-American becomes “The First African-American.”

This race is still a major issue in this country. The more comfortable Blacks and Whites are with each other, the more you will see that we are all just the same.

 Times are changing fast and so are sports. As more African-Americans gain serious wealth and power, you will begin to see more African-Americans as owners of professional franchises. That day is coming. There are so many African-American athletes and entertainers with lots of money. That day of ownership—is just around the corner. African-Americans will not be given a small percentage of ownership either. They will be the majority owners! So when that day does happen, there is little doubt in my mind that you will hear the term “The First Black.”

 In other countries around the world, the term “The First Black” is never used. There are more people of color around the world than there are in this country. But, for some reason, we as a people here in the U.S. are still hung up on the term “The First Black.” Attitudes towards race are very different in other countries. I hope one day in this country that term will go away.

It’s great to hear about the accomplishments of African-Americans. Accomplishments by anyone can be considered newsworthy, but can we stop saying “The First Black” when an African-American just happens to be the one who does something first?

High school sports is more popular right now than any other time in recent memory. With that being said, should more high school games be played on T.V.? In most areas of the country, high school games should be televised more often. What do you think the effects of having more games on T.V. would do to the players?

The coverage of high school sports is huge. There are websites, blogs, message boards, and many magazines all giving major coverage to high school athletes and their teams every day.

In my opinion, the more exposure given to high school players and the outstanding job of high school coaches are doing on a daily basis would be outstanding. Many of these high school coaches go unnoticed and unrecognized for years. By having games televised more often could only improve high school sports.

There may be some out there who feel that having high school games televised is wrong and by having players play on TV could somehow hurt the game. Having college games on ESPN almost every night has not hurt the college game!

I believe sports is a game that should be fun for all who play and coach and if there is money to be made from having games televised then that money could help a high school program financially. It’s done in college all the time! Money is made and put back into the college programs, so the same can be done with high school programs.

There are more high school ball games being shown over the Internet so there is a market for this. One day soon some local cable channel will begin showing more and more local high school ball games.

High school sports, just like all the other sports, its big business! Nike and many other big-name shoe companies already market their products to high school programs anyway.

“911, What’s your emergency? “My High School Career is Over and I have No Colleges!”

This situation happens to high school senior student athletes every year. Their high school career is over and they have no college offers at all.

No offers and you’re thinking to yourself, what when wrong? What did I miss? What did my coach do for me?  Did I go to enough camps, showcases? Did I get my tape out to college programs? Did I write to college programs? Did I email to college coaches? Did I make any phone calls to college coaches?

Did I return all the questionnaire that were sent to me from college programs? Did I do enough in the weight room or on the practice field? Did I play my best in every game? Did I take pay-offs? Was I coachable? Did I have the right attitude or was I a pain in the butt? Did I throw my money away with these worthless recruiting services? Why am I in this mess?

A large number of very good athletes are dealing with the fact that they are not going to college for their sport. Or they soon will be at some point.

I look at college sports and recruiting as a business and I know if you don’t get a scholarship then college can be very expense.  If you don’t take the business approach to the recruiting process then you’re not going to college! That’s how I see it!

Whether you play football, volleyball, run track or you’re the best baseball or basketball player in the state, the college recruiting process is all the same.

For parents who will spend money on their very talented kid, here are some things that could be helpful:

1. Take the SAT or ACT tests early and often and keep trying to get a better score each time. The test scores carry more power than the GPA. Many student athletes make the mistake and wait to take the test in their senior year. At the latest, take the ACT or SAT during your junior year. You can take the practice tests, too.

2. Go to camps or events or showcases where you know there are going to be a number of college coaches in attendance. If enough college programs can see you play over a long summer then that’s a good thing. Never go to an event and there are no college coaches there.  You’ll be wasting your money.

3. Get a good DVD made. This is very important because college coaches are not coming to high school games anymore. Get a copy of a good game and mix in some highlights. Make sure you identify who it is in the DVD. I would say get 100 DVD’s made and mail them to 100 college programs. Mix up your list of programs of big programs and small programs. Also, make sure you have the talent to play at any of these programs before you mail the DVD. Have some extra DVD’s just in case someone did not get one or you think of another college to mail to or better yet, a coach calls and asks for a DVD.  You can have tape or film when talking to a college coach. It’s all the same. Get them a DVD!

4. Have the student athlete in the family call the coach or an assistant coach and let that coach know who you are and that you have an interest in their program. If you’re a little shy, write them a hand written letter. That will make a great first impression! Email will at first get lost with all the other junk that’s out there so write to the coach.

That is just a small list of things you can do to get you going with the steps you need to make it to the next level.

30 Random Observations about Getting Recruited For College

1. Can you play at the next level? Sounds simple, right? But astonishingly, many high school students for many reasons can’t play after high school.

2. You don’t have the grades. How many times have we heard about very talented student athletes that were more of an athlete than a student?

3. Student athletes who only want to play at the D-1 level. I’m sure that’s all you hear every day is D-1 schools. Most high school athletes are only interested in D-1 programs all else is nothing to them.

4. Getting a letter from a college coach–What does it really mean?

5. No plans to get recruited. Everyone who plays a sport in high school is not a blue chip talent so what are you going to do, what is your plan of action?

6. The high school coach is always in the way.

7. Sometimes the high school coach does nothing.

8. The parents that get on the nerves of college coaches. There are pushy parents who sometimes want to be in on everything when dealing with a college coach.

9. Having realist expectations when it comes to college recruiting. Case in point: “my kid is good, he’s 6’1 and plays guard and he’s always wanted to play at Duke. What are his chances?”

10. What happens to the players’ recruiting future? How many times has the high school coach quit at the end of the season? Is his obligation to the players over?

11. Making high school coaches full-time coaches only. This would help with college recruiting and player development. Great idea, huh?

12. Going to a camp, there are 500 other players there, “how are the coaches going to notice me?”

13. “Over-hyping” a student athlete just to get him/her more exposure with college programs.

14. Boosting players’ stats in the newspaper. How many times does this go on?

15. Changing high schools 2 or 3 times just to be on a better team to help with recruiting. I know some states have rules about this.

16. Changing AAU basketball programs all the time–sometimes 2 or 3 times in the same season.

17. AAU basketball is now the recruiting power for basketball.

18. Only D-3 schools are showing interest but you think you can play at a much higher level.

19. College coaches tell you one thing but mean something else. I’ve heard a coach tell a player that they are interested in him/her and they’ll send letters, make phones calls to that player, and they will bring the family out for a visit and the player and family are really feeling it; they know that it’s just a matter of time before an offer is made only to have that coach tell them that they decided on someone else, or worse, they don’t even bother to call them back!

20. There are many AAU events, junior Olympics events, showcases, combines, team camps, etc. What does this all mean and does any of this help players get recruited for college? I think you do have to be seen and a thorough evaluation of your athletic abilities must be made by as many college programs as possible in order for those programs to make a sound.

21. What are college programs looking for when they recruit?

22. With all the summer time camps from AAU to Junior Olympics events to showcase events and the number of games high school players play during the summer, do you really need to have a high school season anyway? For football yes, but what about the other sports?

23. How many times have you heard, ‘they’re good athletically and academically but they are not getting the big-time interest.” How often does this happen?

24. How many times have you heard about or have seen a good high school student athlete and they end up without a college program? Now some may have other issues and others may not, but for whatever the reason they end up working at the local McDonald’s or at the local retail store or mall.

25. Time, sometimes, is a factor with recruiting. There are high school student athletes and families who wait too long to do certain things, like taking the SAT or ACT tests. They may take the test one time and that’s it or they look into other college programs. College programs are not going to wait on one student athlete forever. When time has run out, these are the players who end up at a junior college or no college all because time ran out for them.

26. Getting the wrong advice on what to do about your own college recruiting program.

27. A good high school coach is doing it all– from getting game films out or DVD’s (whichever you prefer), making sure the players are on track academically, mailing letters, and making phone calls to college programs. Coaches go above and beyond the call of duty only to have a parent mess it all up or second guess the coach’s decision or always questioning the high school coach’s methods.

28. The high school players get hurt during the season. Has this hurt player’s chance? I think yes it has. Why would a college program invest a full scholarship into that player now?

29. When should you start the college recruiting process? Many times, families will sit back and hope for something to happen or sometimes they will make it happen.

30. “Oh, I’ll just walk-on.” How many times have you heard that one? The reality is that to be a walk-on at a major college program you have to be recruited by that program. If all you had to do was just show up at a college for practice then some of the big-time programs would be overwhelmed with new student athletes who will think they all can play at a major college. Get real with it!

Question: Are high school athletes targets by the so-called ‘player haters’ out there? We all know that athletes are extremely popular because everyone is paying close attention to every move an athlete makes. High school athletes whether they are winning or losing ball games will often be criticized by students, fans of the game and the haters who were good enough to play ball.

Being a high school athlete does come with some level of pressure. You’re always having to prove something to somebody every day. Not everyone is happy for the success of successful, high-achieving high school student athletes.  There are others out there who are looking for an opportunity to try to ruin over-achieving, highly successful high school ball players. For as long as I can remember, high school athletes has had a bulls-eye on their backs just because they are successful high school athletes. For all the people who love high school sports and care about the players, there is a small group out there looking for ways to destroy a high school athlete’s career. 

How many times have you read a newspaper or heard on TV about a high school kid getting into trouble? We have all heard, from time to time, stories about seemingly upstanding young men or women who get into trouble. For me there is always the ‘story behind the story’ about what really happened and why or how they ended up in trouble. Also every year you hear about an up and coming star high school athlete who, for no reason at all, is killed either by a jealous student or someone else with another agenda.

Make no mistake, high school athletes are important to a school’s student population; to a college program that is recruiting them; to that newspaper’s website and blogs that cover them every day.

My advice to all high school student athletes is to stick together, traveled together, hang out together in groups during their season and after. Remember, everyone out there is not your friend so be very careful in who you let into your world.

College Recruiting Service

Woods Recruiting is offering a college recruiting service to all high school student athletes from all sports.

The landscape of high school basketball is changing. The up and coming power is AAU basketball. Why do I say this? Because it’s true. High school basketball is not the same anymore. It use to be a big deal to play on your high school team but that time is over. AAU basketball offers more to the student athlete than just being on the high school basketball team. AAU basketball programs run like small corporations. These programs have presidents, treasurers, trainers, and many coaches. They raise money for their programs and do a great job with recruiting.

All of these programs are non-profit and bring in many donations. The part of AAU basketball that I can see that’s fun for the players is the traveling. Many of the programs are going to tournaments all over the country and players are staying at hotels, eating at good restaurants all the time and are doing things kids like to do. AAU basketball is fun and there’s more parental involvement.

The AAU players have greater advantages that high school teams don’t. During your high school season you play 20 or so games with teams in your community which means you get on the school bus and travel to another school to play. There are no hotels or places to eat after the game like you would get during the AAU season and there is no travel.

During the AAU season you have a different coach and sometimes and entirely different group of coaches. Other major advantages I see are recruiting good players to the AAU program whereas in high school, you’re stuck with the players who go to that school.

Recruiting is a big deal these days. College coaches want to see as many players in one place, at one time and you can’t really do that during the high school basketball season.

At some of the AAU events there are hundreds of teams with thousands of players. It would make sense for college recruiters to attend because it’s much easier to see all of the good players in one place. College coaches can see these players play many games during the length of a tournament and it is a great advantage to the players of these AAU basketball programs.

AAU basketball players can play 40 to 50 games and there are many other perks that go along with that such as, players receiving free shoes and new uniforms. In high school, you are stuck with same old outdated jersey that’s been worn a million times by many other players.

AAU programs also have power. When it comes to recruiting they have the most talented teams and players and college recruiters want to get to know these AAU coaches. College coaches can only get to these players by going through the AAU coaches. I’ve heard that some AAU coaches will say things like, “if you make a donation of $10,000 you can have access to my players”. Now keep in mind, this is not illegal. AAU programs are non-profit and have to raise money somehow. College programs do make these types of donations and it’s all good for everyone.

Back in the day and not that long ago, some high school coaches would try to ruin a high student athlete’s chances of getting recruited for college but with the power of AAU basketball, you can’t get over on players any more. The players now have more options and there’s nothing wrong with options.

The things that I’m hearing and seeing with AAU basketball is that some major college recruits are bypassing the high school basketball season altogether. If it’s about recruiting and being seen then all you would have to do is only play AAU basketball. By only playing AAU basketball, you can still been seen by a greater number of college coaches and I think it would be a better advantage to play AAU basketball. The only downside I can really see is if you are an average basketball player and are not on a good AAU basketball program. Then, you would need the high school basketball season.

To be recruited in high school it would help if your team played in the state tournament every year. College programs would come and see the players playing–all in one place. That still goes on but the value is not so important any more. Not every team makes it to the state tournament and good players sometimes get overlooked. But if you are lucky enough to be on a good AAU team, then you will be seen by a large number of coaches.

Think about this: some smaller college programs who don’t have the big recruiting budgets have to pick which events to attend each year. These smaller college programs must spend their money wisely so, to attend a large AAU basketball tournament would be in that college’s best interest. College programs don’t need to attend the high school basketball games anymore because they’re only going to see one good player–maybe.

College coaches are funny about how they recruit players and they’re not coming just to see one player anymore. AAU basketball offers more. It’s like one-stop shopping–get it all and see it all in one place.

I don’t know if the coaching is any diffident or better with AAU basketball versus high school coaching. It may be about the same because a lot of high school coaches are AAU basketball coaches. What I do see is the AAU coaches having more time to put into their own programs and players. Also, many AAU coaches don’t have to deal with the high school BS from school administrators and athletic directors.  AAU coaches can bypass many restrictions that are placed on high school coaches.

Yes, being an AAU basketball coach has its many advantages.  Being an AAU coach, you can build the program how you want and pick or recruit the players you want now. High school coaches are teachers and do not have the time to fully help their own players with recruiting.

There will come a time when AAU basketball is more powerful than high school basketball. In the future, you will see more AAU basketball events on T.V.  Some AAU programs will even start their own television network and maybe run their own programming on the Internet.

AAU basketball is what’s happening now! I love AAU basketball!

DVD’s are a major part of the college recruiting process. This is one of the major steps in evaluating high school players. By having a DVD, college coaches want to see you play. College coaches are not coming out to high school games anymore. It’s very rarely just for them to go to watch one player.  So, if they can look at 5 or 10 players on DVD’s in the comfort of their own office that’s a major benefit to that coach as suppose to having to travel all the way to see a high school game and they may not get to see the player they really want or get to see.

So DVD’s, you still need one. DVDs are important because it saves time and saves money and effort. There are also many websites out there that will put up your DVD, create a 3 to 5 minute highlight video, and say that college coaches are interested in that, and that’s not necessarily true.

Three to five minutes is not enough for a college coach to make a determination on whether you can play for their program, whether you are a fit for their program.

Plus they want the whole DVD of game, of a good game, highlights, game action and all of that. They also want to compare you to other players.

They may need to look at your DVD, five, six, seven times and compare you to another player. So, it’s important to have the DVD.

To have DVDs made, to be able to get this is out to college coaches.

The more they can see you play the better it is so it’s important for you the have a DVD where there’s good game action at DVD, where there’s mixing along with highlights. You don’t necessarily have to have music and rolling statistics and all the subject kind of stuff.

College programs want to see you play and they’re going to compare you versus another player but they can’t do that on a 3 to 5 minute video highlight clip on some website. That’s not going to give them the information they need.

So again, DVD’s are still important in the recruiting world. So get your DVD made, get it and get it mailed!
