Take the Time to Get Together

March 1, it is finally spring!! The weather is actually above freezing today. Time to start getting out and doing things and enjoying them!!
March is National Quilt Month. The purpose of the celebration is to continue the tradition of quilting through education and service. Quilt shops, fabric stores and local guilds host a variety of events and classes throughout the month to expand knowledge of existing quilters and draw a new generation into the craft.
Take the time to go to some of these events with a friend. I am sure we can all relate to the feeling of just never having enough time to finish a project, keep up with the family or just get together with a friend. It is important to make the time for these things. Plan to have lunch with a friend, visit that cousin you haven't seen for a while or go to a local event.
You will be able to say" Wow, that was a nice day, I'm glad we took the time to be together."

Teach Others What You Know

Teaching is a wonderful way to share your love of quilting. It is so rewarding to see the look of understanding and enlightenment on a students face when they "get it". Quilting and sewing are so easy that students always "get it" and often wonder why they were hesitant about sewing in the first place.

I urge everyone who knows of another person who would like to learn something new to share their knowledge of a craft, a technique or a project. Sometimes you think "oh, I am not good enough to teach another person" and we lose an opportunity. You will be amazed at the rewards that come your way in the form of thanks, contentment and satisfaction when you teach.

Tonga Rhapsody Batiks Block of the Month- What Fun!!!

We have completed our first month of the Tonga Rhapsody Batik Block of the Month and it was a blast!! The block designs are easy!!! The setting design is a little more challenging but that makes it all the more fun. We are seeing who can gripe the most and who can finish their block first. We have had lots of fun sewing because there is nothing else to do in this weather.
Thanks to all the brave gals who are participating. The company is wonderful and the snacks are better.

Tonga Rhapsody Batiks NEW Block of the Month

Twelve gorgeous Tonga Batiks have been specially chosen for the Tonga Rhapsody 2011 Block of the Month. The Tonga Rhapsody Patterns includes an 8" x 10" color image of the quilt and a color fabric key for the queen-size ( 92" x 106") quilt. Livin' Large Quilt On Display In Our Shop!

Isn't this a great quilt?? It is on loan to us from Heather Mulder Peterson from Anka's Treasures.
We have the fabric and all the instructions, all you have to do is come into the shop!!!
This quilt is throw size but can easily be made larger, can be made into other colors to fit your decor and it makes a great gift for the graduate to be.
We will be making lots of quilts from the Livin' Large book which is available now from Woodland Quilts. Come take a peek!!!

Sew and Go Class!!

This bag is HUGE!!! We did this during a Sew and Go class and it is big enought to hold a folded queen size quilt. What a great idea!!! Thanks to Kari for getting us the zippers (which were really easy to put in by the way.)

Pretty In Pink and Modern Day Diamonds Class

The pastel quilt is called Pretty in Pink.
The darker one below is called Modern Day Diamonds. Both quilts are featured in the Livin' Large quilt book which has lots of patterns for large scale prints.
Feb. 23 or March 6 we will have classes featuring this book. The price of the class is - just buy the book! We will show you how to put these two great quilts together.

Wall of Purses & New Fabric!

We now have Terry Atkinson and Liz Lois's new line of fabric "Neutral Territory" and it is going fast. Such a great blend of browns, creams, teals and reds. Everything we make out of it looks terrific, as we knew it would!!!
We tried some of the fabric out as totes and bags and added them to the great wall of purses, looks cool doesn't it??

Busy Times, Happy Times

We have been so busy with shows, classes and Shop Hop. What a great couple of days we had last weekend. And you can see by the pictures that we had a bunch of great things to see and to buy! We had lots of treats, lots of projects, but most of all, lots of friends and laughter. Thanks to all my friends for coming to the events I have been part of or sponsored during the year. Watch for the wonderful trunk show we have coming up in December! It will be an inspiration for all your holiday projects!

Sew and Go Class

We had our very first Sew and Go class yesterday. Everyone was happy with the little tote bag they made, which was very easy. We started out by sewing our four patch and then adding that to our outer bag fabric. We sandwiched the batting and the lining and quilted the bag pieces. Then we cut them out and sewed them together, adding binding and a handle. Everyone finished a tote in 3 hours and we had snacks too. What a great night!!!

Last "Let's Do Lunch" Class

Here is our final project from the "Let's Do Lunch" class; Ribbon Candy. Of course some of us wanted to make it out of christmas fabrics, a picture of mine is here when I was chain stitching the pieces. Samatha made hers out of brown and blue and used only two fabrics, interesting choices.Cathy chose to make hers using a background I said "NO!" to. It turned out wonderfully well so I should know better than to judge a fabric choice too quickly!!Wendy brought refreshments; homemade grape wine, all wrapped up in a "Let's Do Lunch" wine tote. It was yummy!!Thanks to everyone who took this class, we had a blast!!!

Frog Table Runner

Here is Jesse, looking very happy because she just finished her frog table runner from the "Let's Do Lunch" book by Terry Atkinson.Grandma Carol says she sits down at the machine, reads all the instructions and sews her projects perfectly. Sounds like we all could learn something from Jesse!!! She has lots of other projects cut out and ready too, what a great inspiration!!! Thanks for bringing this in Jesse!!! Good Job!!!

Maxwell Street Mascot Race

Well, the race was on and won by McGruff the Dog, mascot for the anti-drug program from the police department here in Whitewater. But the other mascots ran a great race, especially Willie Warhawk, our personal favorite here at Woodland Quilts. The last lap was finished by doing the "Chicken Dance" so you KNOW it wasn't an easy race to win. We all had a great time at Maxwell St. days and the weather was wonderful!!! running in the pictures we have Verlo Mattress, Willie Whippet, Scoopie from Culvers, McGruff and Willie Warhawk. Congratulations to all the runners and thanks for making Maxwell St. Days so memorable!!!

Sorry I haven't been posting regularly lately! You will have to bear with me as I catch up to speed on the blog!

Busy!! Busy!!! We are so busy making our blocks for the Ode to the '30s class. They are piling up and they are beautiful. These blocks are not even in a quilt yet and they are so very pretty to look at!!!We all agreed that they are NOT the easiest blocks we have ever made but also that they are by far the most beautiful. And what a feeling of satisfaction we get when we finish one!!! Learning a new technique is always a challenge but we feel this quilt will be worth the extra effort.

Piece of Pie!

Our newest class; Piece of Pie, will start on August 13, 2009. This is the cover quilt top, not finished but in the running. This class will be so much fun and we can use up our scraps for this too!!! Best of all will be the scrumptious and yummy desserts we will be eating once a month. When you register for this class you get the Piece of Pie book and a container for your cut up scraps. Then, when you come to the first class you are ready to pick the quilt you want to do from the book !!!!All quilts from this book use 10 inch or 5 inch squares and 2 1/2 inch strips. Thats it!!! What a great way to get together and use up those scraps all at the same time. These quilts go together faster than we can eat up the dessert!! Hope you can join us!!!

Pie Crust Pile-Up

The name of the game was scrappy and the name of the pattern was Pie Crust Pile Up. We had such fun making these. Each of three teams were given kits and told to race to the finish to see how soon we could make a quilt for charity. We finished last, alas, but it looked great as you can see. We were just too careful!!!! Anyway, our new friend, Lori, got the quilt in a draw and took it with her to Washington State, where whe lives, to finish it and present it to her favorite charity. See Terry's blog for the finshed quilt and places where all three quilts ended up. It was a great race, even if all I won was a package of tissues so I could sob my loss!!!!

Here is a peek at the inside of Bridge Creek Cottage in Augusta Wisconsin. We had a wonderful time at the retreat and we had a wonderful place to stay. This is a view of the great table runner made by Terry Atkinson. The table seats a dozen and we filled it up every time!!! There is a view of the work room and my and Deb's bedroom. Lots of great food and fun.
