While it may come as a surprise to those blinkered to the machinations of the music industry, Mikas ascent to superstardom around the time of his debut album, 2007s Life in Cartoon Motion, wasnt exactly smooth.

A spread of negative reviews for the Grace Kelly-spawning long-player did nothing to disrupt its commercial success. But Mika, as a musician who writes his own material, must surely have taken a few less-than-favourable assessments to heart if not, it would only
support the suggestion that his quirk-laden fare cant mean much to the man himself.

So expectations for this follow-up incorporate hope that Mika has developed his sound following so much exposure, so many new experiences and a much bigger budget to play with. And, certainly, The Boy Who Knew Too Much is bolder of arrangement than its predecessor sometimes haphazardly, and sporadically disastrously, but never boringly. Mikas classical background can lead him down cluttered compositional avenues, but when he turns down the contrast between structural elements, the results are hugely enjoyable.

Both I See You and By the Time are pretty arrangements that find Mikas occasionally questionable vocals complementing elegant piano lines well the former is particularly striking in its accomplished articulating of melancholy, with no clunky couplet tripping over its sparely
employed strings. It must surely be a single. In fact, it could very well be Mikas finest moment yet.

Closer Pick Up Off the Floor rather undoes the good work of the aforementioned brace by coming over indecently theatrical, but its the only other track here that aims for the heart rather than a temporary embrace for a silly, drive-time sing-along. The lyrical drivel of lead
single We Are Golden, Blame it on the Girls and Good Gone Girl is,sadly, fuel for the fires burning in the bellies of Mikas fiercest critics, and salvation via the George Michael-echoing Touches You arrives as too little, too late. Mika needs to find a balance between the polar musical worlds hes so intent on occupying, between mature sensitivity and worrying puerility.

Because, until then, his indulgences will always overshadow songs that are really quite beautiful. A disaster its not, then, but The Boy is sure to attract no little vitriol from other corners of the music press, opinions swayed by its schizophrenic nature.

With his unmistakable sound-mix of Jazz- and Swing samples and electronic music, Parov Stelar has secured his own unique position in the world of music. Little Dragon - Machine Dreams (2009)

Gothenburg bliss-poppers Little_Dragon will follow 2007's excellent self-titled debut with Machine Dreams, a new album for Peacefrog on August 17.

According to vocalist Yukimi Nagano, "these days, humans seem more and more like machines, and as technology evolves, machines feel more human and it becomes fuzzy and beautiful and science fiction-ish. We feel dependent on our machines to create and live, and their sounds reflect us". So we guess you can expect a movement towards a more electronic sound. Their first album was one of 2007's most underrated full-lengths; a slick Portishead-indebted pop number featuring one of the year's highlights in 'Test'. They were also pretty ace when we caught them at Sonar last summer. The first single from the album will be titled 'Feather', and will be released either very late August or early September.

Invisible Republic showcases a band that has fully come into its own -- theres a new urgency in McCandless rococo vocals, bolstered by Ramsays swirling melodies. Just as a republic is all about the publics participation in the state, the songs on Invisible Republic offer up Ramsay and McCandless take on our current state of affairs for Young Galaxy, the political is personal, and vice-versa, from Disposable Times, a wary look at where the human race is heading, to searing closer Firestruck, which builds from a hushed intimacy into an epic emotional maelstrom.

The XX - XX (2009)

The XX are possibly the hottest thing at the moment, thanks to a bevvy of favorable reviews from outlets such as Pitchfork, NME and Drown in Sound. Just look at the Metacritic score.. a sure rarity for a UK band for sure. Who are they? Well, the xx are 4 20 (!) year olds from London who have obviously absorbed all the good music they have listened to growing up and then somehow used some hokey pokey magic to create songs compromise this gorgeous album.

It’s only fitting that this album is getting popular just as fall is settling in, whereas previous hot albums have glorified summer and fun, the XX are more interested in spaces of darkness and heartbreak. Think dark nights, concrete jungles and the mundane aspects of everyday life, that is what the XX are trying to recreate it seems. This album is fantastic. Each song follows a simple, minimalistic composition that just does enough to create whatever feeling the song is going for. Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft trade guy – girl vocals, each trying to sound more distant then the other. Some guitar riffs will remind you of Jesus and Mary Chain and some sound elements may remind you of Junior Boys first album, but as a whole, the XX have created a unique and atmospheric album. I have a hard time pinpointing what songs are standouts because they all blend in together so well. My best guess for now will be “Infinity”, “Crystalised” and “Islands”.

British singer-songwriter-producer and two time Grammy nominee Imogen Heap is set to release her much anticipated new solo album Ellipse on August 4th 2009 through RCA Records.

The same day Imogen wrapped up her tour in support of her last breakthrough album Speak For Yourself, she delved into the writing process for Ellipse. Without so much as unpacking, Heap spun Google Earth around a few times to plot some destinations to begin writing. She began in Hawaii "because it was the furthest landmass from any other landmass in a large amount of blue" and worked her way through Fiji, Tasmania, Japan, China and Thailand. Accompanied by only a small writing set up, Ellipse began to take shape. Imogen then returned home to continue work on the record and remained true to her do-it-yourself ethos, building her new studio in the "playroom" of her old family home in Essex, UK, (an 18th century 'oval villa' restored by her parents) which she took on the responsibilities for just before the start of the record.

Imogen continues to explore the Artist/Audience relationship she has developed with her fans. She enlisted those who follow her on Twitter (330,000 and counting!) to submit Tweets which were then shaped into her album biography. Imogen kept her fans up-to-date on the recording process by posting 38 vBlogs, which are all available on her website. Upfront of the new album, Imogen even invited fans to complete an unfinished track "The Song That Never Was". She provided the lyrics, and over 500 fans added backing music to create their own versions. The result would have been record breaking, had she opted to register it beforehand!

Since spearheading the DIY music movement, support from her fans allowed Imogen both critical and commercial breakthroughs, including her Grammy nominations and half a million record sales. Imogen's music has been licensed by some of the most popular films and TV programs including The OC, The Chronicles of Narnia and Garden State. Imogen was at the forefront of the online explosion, leading UK's The Guardian to title her "the first download diva". She maintains one of the biggest profiles online, with more than 40 million plays and over 350,000 friends on Myspace and over 7 million views on You Tube for "Hide and Seek", the standout single from Speak For Yourself.

Imogen continues to be the artists' artist of choice when it comes to collaborations, notably on Nitin Sawhney's critically acclaimed current album 'London Undersound', with former Sneaker Pimp's IAMX on "Secret Friend", and more recently teaming up with multi-platinum music artist Mika to write with and produce a song on his new album due out later this year.

Sally Shapiro - My Guilty Pleasure (2009)

Sally Shapiro, the Swede who does this thin electropop with certain melancholy air but who still does not enjoy not half of the popularity that your compatriot Robyn has, returns this year with the second LP after all the remixes have thrown Disc Romance (2007) and others.

The new album goes for name My Guilty Pleasure and it will be thrown by Paper Bag Record next August 25. To the disc it is anticipated by the exit of the single “Miracle“ on June 16, although it is already possible to listen from Pitchfork or straight in your MySpace.

After charming blog boys (and girls?) with her icy-hot brand of dance-pop on 2006's Disco Romance, nonplussed Swedish disco princess Sally Shapiro is readying her official follow-up, My Guilty Pleasure, for release August 25 via Paper Bag.

Produced by Shapiro's right hand man Johan Agebjörn, Guilty Pleasure also includes contributions from Cloetta Paris and Tensnake. The single "Miracle hits North American stores June 16, backed by a remix by Bogdan Irkük. The song is currently streaming on this very website.

In a press release, the notoriously shy chanteuse said the new album will "hopefully make you fall in love with the person sitting next to you on the bus." Creepy, Reader's Digest-reading old guy in the back, this is your lucky day.

Simian Mobile Disco - Temporary Pleasure (2009)

Simian Mobile Disco have named their sophomore album Temporary Pleasure. It'll be out August 17. The cast of guest vocalists includes Beth Ditto, Jamie Lidell and Gruff Rhys (Super Furry Animals). Zan Rowe caught up with producer James Ford, who reported that some of the music was made here in Australia earlier this year when Simian Mobile Disco were touring with the Big Day Out. "Ten Thousand Horses we actually mixed in Australia in a studio in Australia. We had a day off and instead of going to the beach like everybody else on the tour we went in to the studio. And I think yeah, that was the mix that made it on to the record. Ford said that he was hoping to be back in Australia with Simian Mobile Disco again this summer.
