Four paintings featured in Easter exhibit

The Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City opened an Easter exhibit this month featuring four paintings from Al Young Studios. The exhibit, located in one of the galleries on the main floor, runs until May of this year.

The museum is located at 45 North West Temple Street. Parking and other information are available on the Museum pages at the Church's web site.

Both of Elspeth's paintings featured in the exhibit come from the Women of the Bible Series: As It Began to Dawn, her painting of Mary Magdalene preparing to visit the tomb, and Blessed Is She That Believed, her painting of Mary at Pentecost.

Two of Al's paintings are also featured in the exhibit: And I Will Not Deny The Christ - Moroni, is a painting from the Heroes of the Book of Mormon Series, and I Shall Be Whole, is Al's most recent addition to the Women of the Bible Series.

Online art gallery revised

The art gallery area of the Al Young Studios web site now takes visitors directly to images available in the collection.

For many years, artworks have been presented by artist, by subject category, or by media. These categories can still be used to sort the collection, but site visitors now go first to the images and then to the forms in which an image is available. A detail page for each image presents the original and the prints in which each image can be purchased.

The online Product Catalog remains unchanged.

The collection currently consists of 152 images created originally as 65 oil paintings, 75 lithographs, 10 computer-generated illustrations (CGIs), and 2 block prints. In addition to the media in which the images were created (which might loosely be termed the "originals"), the Al Young Studios currently offers 101 open-edition print versions of selected images.

New Painting: She Hath Done What She Could: She Hath Come Aforehand by Elspeth Young

She Hath Done What She Could: She Hath Come Aforehand by Elspeth Young features Mary of Bethany from Mark 14. It is the latest addition to the Women of the Bible Series, and sells for $8,000 (unframed).

The oil on panel was completed in February and measures 24 in. x 32 in.

The Studios blog provides behind-the-scenes coverage of studio projects, as well as posts presented in the spirit of sharing ideas that might be helpful in setting up and maintaining an art studio.

The Storybook Home blog is for the community of interest in The Storybook Home Journal™: "There's so much that goes into a storybook life, and so many photos, recipes, ideas, and tips that never make it into the pages of The Storybook Home Journal™, that we decided a blog would be the perfect medium to fill in the blanks for our subscribers, and anyone else interested in 'stepping into the story.'"

Artworks: Elspeth Young completes painting of Eunice

Established In The Faith, by Elspeth Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Women in the Scriptures series. It sells for $3,000.

It depicts Eunice in Acts 16 and 2 Timothy 1. The piece is an oil on panel (12.125 in. x 14.25 in. ).

Al Young receives viewer's choice award

The Mother of All Living, by Al Young, is one of three artworks to receive a viewer's choice award at the Eighth International Art Competition. The award comes after five months in which exhibit patrons cast 13,000 votes for their favorite artworks from among the 197 on display at the LDS Conference Center in Salt Lake City. (See "Visitors choose favorite art at the Church History Museum").

Works included in this year's juried exhibition were selected from among 1,149 entries from Latter-day Saint artists around the world. The exhibit closes Oct. 11th, but remains accessible on the Museum's web page.

The competition is 22 years old, and in 1987 Al was among artists featured in the first exhibition. His finely crafted pencil drawing, The St. George Temple, was selected that year from among 1,031 entries.

Artworks: Al Young completes painting of the Daughter of Jairus

"I Say Unto Thee, Arise", by Al Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Women in the Scriptures series. It sells for $5,825.

It depicts the Daughter of Jairus in Mark 5:41-42. The piece is an oil on panel (15 in. x 21 in.).

Elspeth Young to sign art calendars at the BYU Bookstore

Al Young Studios made available several new prints for the Women in Scripture Series today. The new additions are of Choose You This Day (Puah), And He Shall Direct Thy Paths (Lois), and The Trial of Faith (Ruth and Orpah).

The 11 in. x 17 in. prints sell for $25 USD; the 8 in. x 10 in. prints sell for $14 USD; and the 5 in. x 7 in. prints sell for $7 USD.

In addition to adding the new products, higher quality images of several paintings were added to the Women in Scripture Main Page.

New Painting by Elspeth Young - Choose You This Day

Choose You This Day, by Elspeth Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Women in the Scriptures series. It sells for $3,800.

The painting depicts the Hebrew midwife, Puah, from the book of Exodus chapter 1. Faced with choosing between fear of God and fear of man, this valiant woman chose, like the prophet, Joshua, to "serve the Lord." Her courage saved countless innocent children from slaughter and enabled the children of Israel to "wax very mighty" (Exodus 1:20). Her faithfulness was blessed by the Lord, who "made [the midwives] houses." From the Hebrew translation we learn that "houses" could indicate the building up or repairing of home, family, palace, or temple. Whatever the precise blessing conferred by the Lord upon this faithful woman, these words remind us of the blessings of eternal families, available in Holy Temples, where covenants "build up" and "repair" family ties so that they may last throughout eternity.

New Painting by Elspeth Young - And He Shall Direct Thy Paths

And He Shall Direct Thy Paths, by Elspeth Young, is the most recent painting to be completed in the Women in the Scriptures series. It sells for $2,200.

This portrait depicts Lois, the grandmother of Timothy. In the Apostle Paul's second epistle to Timothy, he commends Lois as one in whom dwells "unfeigned faith" (see 2 Timothy 1:5). It is this abiding faith which the painting seeks to inspire and convey; faith in the Lord who directs the paths of those who trust in Him and His loving watch care.

Work continues on Women in Scripture project

Artists Elspeth Young and Al R. Young continue their work on paintings featuring women of the Old and New Testaments. Work on the series began in 2003. With the first volume (now in press) featuring women of the Old Testament, paintings scheduled for 2009 focus on artworks of selected women from the New Testament.

Elspeth completed a painting of Ruth and Orpah in February, and will soon announce completion of a portrait of Timothy's grandmother, Lois (mentioned in II Timothy). Ruth and Orpah are included in the New Testament series because Ruth appears in the lineage of the Savior.

Al is currently painting a depiction of the woman with the issue of blood.

Elspeth's tentative schedule for 2009 includes six more paintings, currently at various stages of development. Al's schedule of New Testament paintingz for the year tentatively includes four more original artworks.

Al Young Studios announces new painting: The Trial Of Faith

Al Young Studios announced the addition of The Trial Of Faith to the Women In Scripture Project.

This oil painting on panel is the largest painting in the series (35 1/8 in. x 48 in.). Unframed, it sells for $10,000 US.

The addition of this painting brings to 29 the total number of images in the series. Elspeth began work on the collection in 2003, in collaboration with Dr. Camille Olson, author of the two-volume set. Volume 1 is scheduled for publication later this year.

This image depicts the widowed daughters-in-law of Naomi, Ruth and Orpah, preparing to depart Moab after the death of their respective husbands. Even though both women initially decide to follow Naomi to the land of Judah, Orpah returns instead to the land of her birth. Ruth, however, true throughout the trial of her faith, is rewarded with the privilege of being part of the lineage of the Savior.

The Eighth International Art Competition, sponsored by the LDS Church History Museum, will feature original artworks by Al R. Young, Ashton R. Young, and Elspeth Young. The exhibit opens to the public March 20, 2009, at the church's Conference Center in Salt Lake City, Utah, and runs through October 11, 2009.

Artworks in the exhibit will also be presented on the museum's Internet site at www.lds.org/museum. Works included in the juried exhibition were selected from 1149 entries from Latter-day Saint artists around the world. The theme of the exhibit is Remembering the Great Things of God.

Artworks, to be displayed in the exhibit, by the three artists include The Mother Of All Living, an original oil painting by Al R. Young, Butterfly Window, No. 1, a stained glass window by Ashton R. Young, and For Such A Time As This, an original oil painting by Elspeth Young.
