The beginning of the year has been a huge for servicing clients with Apple products. I(Chance) have placed my hands on several iMacs, Macbooks, and G4s! The problems have only been speed and creating one source for files. Speeding up the Mac books can usually be pretty inexpensive and done within a short turn around time. The "one source for files" was tricky but possible. Most of our customers have more than one device (two PC and a Mac, maybe including a iPhone). All the devices running under one or multiple users can create a headache when trying to find the latest or a certain file. Try Dropbox!

The trick is to have all users create and manage all files within Dropbox. Every computer then will have all the same files on all computers, tablets, and phones. You can even consider this a way to backup your files to a external source. Dropbox keeps your files synced, backed-up and simplified automatically, for all your devices!

I still recommend putting a copy of all your files on a external drive for safe keeping but having a backup onsite and offsite is just as important as having a backup in the first place.

Though health can be looked at in many different ways when our bodies are concerned, but we will be attending, many health events, to promote a life of using technology in a healthy manner and keeping "our" systems in shape. We are trying to make a transition of services and create computer education courses for our clients. I feel that we have been getting a bad reputation, from our clients, for them only calling for/needing our services when things are going badly. We are wanting to show that education of their computer systems is a preventive measure to a healthy computer experience and cost effective for their future!

Knowledge is power! The West TN residents and business need to understand this. Take advantage of every moment available to succeed. Details are still in progress, but Wolfgang University is in the making and we are super excited about the summer and fall introduction to it.

For the next 5 Saturdays, we will be attending a variety of health oriented events. The competition will be slim and we are super excited about each event, with the purpose that is behind each one. We want to give a schedule of where our booth will be for the months of April and May. While trying to fit a computer business within three 5K Runs, two health fairs, and one bike marathon, it has been a challenge. Waiting is Never the Answer

Should we go ahead and drive to work today or get it fixed first?"

Like cars, we never would continue to drive a less than safe vehicle. As for computers, one should live by the same principle. Once one action seems a little different than usual it is best to call a trusted computer service, if the problem persists. There are viruses that can eat away at data at a slow rate. After much time of a unresolved issue you may find your pictures, music or documents ultimately corrupt.

Waiting is never the answer when your important files are at stake. We are always glad to to serve our clients, even if they have waited much to long. It is always painful though to update clients of a complete lost of their files or entire computer.

A couple of things to keep a eye on:

-listen to your machine for new sounds

-same with smell, burning is either your computer or your oven

-just because you have paid for virus protection doesn't mean your have 100% protection

-like your car, you are looking for protection, perfection, and pure enjoyment

Christmas Warranty

The question is whether or not to buy a warranty on a new purchased product this Christmas. We tell clients about this all the time and with all the shopping a little reminder is always good. Depending on the name-brand/company, price and how long we need the device to work determines if we are going to buy a warranty on our new device/purchase.

We could on forever on companies and their products, but when it

comes to laptops we would choose a HP/Compaq. Stay away from Toshiba and eMachines/Acer laptops. Desktops, we like HP and Dell.

Price is our main concern on buying a warranty.

Our rule of thumb is if it is over $500 we buy a warranty. This really depends on how deep your pockets are. If you feel you can shell out for another monitor or PC if your first crashes then you should not get a warranty. Apple computers are high in price and we will always get a warranty with them.

In general, we expect a computer to last about 2-3 years hardware wise and

1-2 years of being able to keep up with upgrades (software and hardware). If we need to warranty our product we use this as how long of a warranty we should get.

To all the PC users and Apple users,

Most PC users are always looking to see if switching to Apple is a good idea or within their price range. For the Apple users, mostly you guys are just looking to upgrade to the latest and greatest. I have news for both of you! Apple has two new desktops and one new laptop.

First to inform the PC users, the prices are high because the parts and configurations are detailed and AWESOME. Also, for future computer purchases, it is best to buy a warranty on the product if it costs more than $700. If you feel like you can shell out the same amount of money again if the first crashes, I wouldn't worry about it.

Know how to make a great looking Resume'?

To all that need a little help getting a resume' start, here is a great place to start. Job Spice! Here is a web based word processor of some sort that will help build a resume'. There are three tabs: Edit, Preview, Styles. The Styles tab well give you option of what you would like the resume' to look like. Then go back to type in some info and then go to preview. NICE!!!!

In the end you are able download as PDF or print the document. Personally I would save as PDF and copy and paste into Google Docs, if you have a Google account.

For those that get frustrated with commercials and can't see every episode on TV we have a solution. Check out the two links below.

Hulu -only shows the last 5 episodes

Sidereel -will have every episode of every season. Great location for catching up or watching a show the night of a broadcast.

Now most companies show all of their shows on their own websites, but not every show you may watch is all under one company. Hulu and Sidereel are two locations you shouldn't have any problems finding any show that you have missed or want to catch up on.

Sick of Viruses, Reboots and Crashes? Give Ubuntu (Linux) a try!

For most, the problematic parts of XP or Vista have just become common place in the Window's users eyes. A issue pops up over night and the user will do anything to get the problem resolved including calling us or some lower form of service like Best Buy*. Ubuntu is a great start in getting closer to a new experience with computers.

Ubuntu has made installation super easy for those that are new and want to give it a try. You could do a clean installation, dual boot (Windows and Linux on one machine), or you could use a "WUBI" (Windows Ubuntu Installer). Installing Ubuntu in Windows is like adding an application, super easy! Here are the steps and links to assist in getting closer to using Linux and also unistalling the WUBI, if ever needed.

Step 1: First you will want to download the ISO/image of Ubuntu to burn to a DVD/R. So make sure you have a DVD burner (It may fit on a CD/R). Beware, this download will take up to an hour at best, depending on your Internet connection.

Step 2: Install ImgBurn This application will give you the ability to burn the ISO to the CD. Once fully installed, start up ImgBurn and select "Write file image to disc". Insert your DVD or CD and select what file you want by clicking the button at the top under "OPEN" (looks like a folder with a magnified glass over it). Find your ISO of Ubuntu. You can start burning when you are ready by clicking the large button at the bottom of the left column. Make sure to grab a sharpie to label the disc to find later.

Step 3: Insert your new Ubuntu disc in your Window's machine. If a prompting message comes up that says "RUN wubi.exe" go for it! (Allow if Vista prompts) Here the first display should show three choices: Demo and full installation, Install inside Windows, Learn more. With out a doubt, for this example, we will be choosing "Install inside Windows". This is also great for testing your machine to see if any issues with your hardware may come up. Once you click the button to install in Window's (picture to your left) here is where you will choose the hard drive you want to use, the amount of size you want to take up of your hard drive (I chose 10GB). From here go over to username and type your first name or what ever you choose. No password is necessary to install and can be added later if you want. It is easier to do it now. You will have to type in your username and password every time you login. Now click "Install". Once the installer is done (5mins at best) it will prompt you to reboot or reboot later.

Every time you want to run Ubuntu you will need to boot your computer and wait for a prompt to choose Windows or Ubuntu. After 5 seconds you will automatically be booted into Windows.

Welcome to Ubuntu! Your first boot up of Ubuntu will take a little time while it sets up everything for you. There is a ton of information on the Internet to see how to use or do almost anything on or with Ubuntu. Feel free to call us for any questions!

HOW TO: UN-Install
In Windows, go to "Start"+"Control Panel"+ "Add/Remove Programs"/"Uninstall a program" and find Ubuntu and run uninstaller. You can also re-insert Ubuntu disc and click install again. It will prompt you if you would like to uninstall Ubuntu.

Daily Backup Your Files

Sync Files From Desktop to Laptop

I feel I am posting this a little late, but it seems unknown to most users. This application is great if you have more than one computer and you would like to share documents, music, and other digital items.

You download Dropbox to, lets say, two machines. You create your account (2GB Free) and any files you add to your Dropbox folder will be added to your second machine. The same works if you had more machines connect to the same account from Dropbox. Depending on the file size it is almost INSTANT syncing.

All of your files are also reachable on getdropbox.com when you login on the top right. If you don't have a machine that has your Dropbox installed, you can go to the web interface and download a file from there.

I recommend this to clients that have more than one computer and would like to have the same exact files on each. Also for businesses that have multiple people that handle the same documents. Once one person makes changes and saves, the editions will be forwarded to the other users. Lastly, it is great for sharing files with friends.

Virus Warning!

With the clients that we have had this month, I noticed some virus infected computers had the same encounter. Make sure you know what the name of your anti-virus is on each computer you have, if different. There have been some websites that will show a pop-up that looks like a anti-virus program. Short and sweet: DO NOT click on anything unless it has the name of your anti-virus software on the window/pop-up. If it does not, I recommend turning off your machine and restarting. Trying to close the pop-up can still result in a virus infection.

Note: Make sure your anti-virus is updated often! Make sure your firewall is on.

Some preventive messesures of virus infections upon your computer is staying off of high networking sites (Myspace,Facebook. ect...), use Linux as your online searching OS, purchase one of our Wolfgang White Box's, or (for humor sake) never connect to the internet. Geek Squad (Best Buy) Machines

We had a client this week that I meet at Best Buy that was looking at getting a laptop. The sells rep did a great job of selling the laptop. The issues:

- The client was suggested a Toshiba ($730). This was a older couple and I understand the need for some form of technology in this day and age, but I can't see an elderly person with basic needs getting any computer over $500. In addition, Toshiba's are a brand I would not purchase for myself nor do I particularly like to service them. Cut and dry: Toshiba poorly supports their computer products.

- Best Buy Service: In most cases I enjoy dealing with sells people, but when it comes to someone servicing my owned property I start looking in a different direction. It bothers me that most clients would rather pay big bucks to a cooperate company to fix, for example, their computer. The technician that is working the magic is not getting paid nearly what you just shelled out. So, I don't like the fact that a technician will be working on my computer at a hourly rate. He gets paid weather he does it right or wrong. This couple paid $150 for a Geek Squad technician to turn on the new laptop, type in "Owner" for the username (like a robot), and install but not activate the anti-virus software.

-The couple then called us and need us to setup the wireless router they bought the same day. I told them, after all was said and done, "It would have cost you $60 to setup your computer, wireless router, printer, and Anti-Virus if you had gone with us from the start." I recieved some pretty wide eyes after they noticed they just paid $220 for just the setup using us and Geek Squad.

Guys, if you don't use Wolfgang Computer Service, at least shop around for prices!

Desktop or Laptop?

We now that with the lap tops the prices can be pretty high at times. There are benefits of both, but we have to agree the the laptop is the best way to go.

Desktop- are very powerful and can come at a low price, for a average PC user the hardware is very easy to change and or upgrade.

Laptop- use a very low amount of energy for the unit to run (1/3 of a desktop), portable, can be used as a desktop

Energy Saving Tips
