                            <title>Nov 28 | Documentary screening: Home Safe</title>
<description>CINESANITY invites you to their next movie event

Home Safe
Monday, the 28th of November 2011.

Please have a look at the attached poster for the details. Please note that for this months event is at the new United Way building, 580 Main Street. If you come, please have a look at the Focusing the Frame exhibit in the lobby.

Home Safe is a documentary and community development project to make visible the experiences and needs of children and their families who experience poverty and homelessness. The project focuses on children under the age of 18 who, along with their families, have been forced into shelters/motels, hostels or transition houses or who are 'couch surfing' with family and friends - all as a consequence of poverty and/or family crises. Three documentary films comprise the SkyWorks Foundations Home Safe Series (Home Safe Calgary, Home Safe Toronto, and Home Safe Hamilton). The stories depicted in the films enable community spokespersons to bring the homeless children and their families into their meetings and conference rooms, to bring them to the table, so that they are present and included in all the discussions that are about them.

CHRA Congress 2011
June 20-23 | Regina, Saskatchewan

housing ideas that matter; housing tools that work:

What's in a name? Well - this year- a whole lot. This year's theme represents the effort that we have put into developing workshops that cover everything that matters to our members; from new ideas in policy to practical everyday solutions, we have it covered.

Also: a full-day event, Pre-Congress is an opportunity to explore a topic to a greater depth than is ordinarily possible during shorter Congress workshops. This year's theme is Breaking Down Silos: exploring the links between the housing, health and homelessness sectors.

<description>Brown Bag Lecture Presented by the Manitoba Centre for Health Policy Housing &amp;amp; Health: Conceptual Linkages and Empirical Research Opportunities

Dr. Jim Dunn
Associate Professor
Health, Aging, &amp;amp; Society
McMaster University

Housing is often described as a 'multi-attribute phenomenon.' Consequently, its relationship to health is complex. Moreover, it behoves us to identify what attributes of housing have the potential to influence health and describe what mechanisms may result in such effects. In this talk I will describe a conceptual model of housing and health and also describe a number of different ways that the effects of housing on health may be researched, with a focus on natural experiments. While not all of these study designs allow us to tease out the mechanisms and pathways linking housing and health, they are powerful for assessing the impact of organized housing programs on health outcomes.

Wednesday, February 16&amp;#160;&amp;#160; 11:30 am

771 Bannatyne Avenue

All are welcome. Free admission.

HOMELESS YOUTH: CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES

Abstract: As a distinguished Professor, researcher and community advocate Dt. Hughes will discuss her recent work on homeless youth and the informal economy. This initiative integrates Dr. Hughes long term research interests in mental health services and social housing.

Jean Hughes, RN, PhD.
Research Scientist, Psychiatry, IWK Health Centre
Dalhousie University

Dr. Hughes research and publications concentrate on marginalized populations with a focus on mental health issues, employ multiple methods, and are interdisciplinary, community-based, and participatory in nature. One research area focuses on homelessness among youth. Dr. Hughes has led several national projects, through the Canadian Mental Health Association, around housing and home care for people with mental illness. All of Dr. Hughes research around marginalized populations is highly connected to her advocacy work.

                            <description>Redevelopment in Vancouvers Downtown Eastside

Come see and hear the story unfold on how one of Canadas most innovative mixed-use developments became a reality after many years of dormancy as a derelict department store!

Robert Enright, former local CBC arts critic and editor of the new book Body Heat: The Story of Woodwards Redevelopment, is pleased to speak about the project.

This mixed use development of approximately one million square feet contains market and non-market residences, a 1908 heritage building with retail, offices and a daycare centre and SFUs School for the Contemporary Arts. It also includes public spaces and urban parks. All of the 536 market condos sold in a day over three years ago while low-income families and single residents are moving into the 200 affordable rental apartments. As one development promotional ad proudly states: Woodwards champions ideals of heritage revival, sustainable design, mixed-use planning and contemporary culture.

What can be learned from the Woodwards story that is applicable to Winnipeg? Come hear Mr. Enrights thoughts.
