(1) This meeting is patient-centered, not therapy-centered. The systems orientation allows us to look at the effects of complex packages of care on the patient as a complex adaptive system rather than deconstructing a given whole system of CAM into component parts.

(2) The literature pushes us towards considering individual differences in patient outcomes across levels of scale (biological, physiological, intrapersonal, interpersonal, and societal). Appropriate clinical designs could include multiple N-of-1 studies and mixed method projects (with qualitative and quantitative approaches together). Computer simulation studies may be indicated as well.

(3) Clinical practice theory, clinical observations, and claims in WS-CAM that seem anomalous in the setting of conventional Western medical thinking may find some parallels in complex systems concepts that could lead to testable hypotheses.

For instance, healing crises and aggravations early in treatment are sudden onset worsenings of clinical conditions. Are these bifurcations in the dynamics of the person as a complex adaptive system? What do the multi-dimensional changes in patients during WS-CAM treatment suggest about the systemic effects of these treatments?  Why can clinically ineffective interventions such as verum isopathic dust mite cause changes in the dynamics of the outcome measures different from the pattern with placebo? Do verum and placebo treatments differ in their dynamical effects?
