A light hearted fun afternoon for dogs and families.

HAVE A PICNIC ON THE MILLENNIUM GREEN!

A Veolia grant for wildflowers sponsored hundreds of ferns planted last weekend by volunteers.

After preparation of the planting areas a team spent all day with visitors and volunteers planting.

The preliminary excavations revealed several types of soil type in the meadow. Some areas were dry with powdery soil full of flints; other areas had fine soil and moist.

The best areas for ferns had some moist clay in them so all of this determined where the plants were to go.

• Hand weed nettles from various places where Claire and Vic have planted wildflowers
• Prune back branches in such areas where they are over shading (prunings to go on bonfire in Graham’s garden, near the sheds, behind the trees on the north side of the Meadow)

It is with sincere regret that we hear that Norman Morris, who provided so much fantastic fun, laughter and enjoyment to young and old alike with his Punch and Judy Shows on the Meadow and elsewhere, passed away on Sunday, 25th July 2010.

Our thoughts go to his family and all who knew him.

You are invited to the AGM for the Whitchurch Millennium Green Trust (the Meadow) this Friday, 23 July 2010 at Nine Springs, The Weir.

Recently, the year 5/6 Kestrel class visited the Millennium Meadow which was full of high tech equipment to identify the living creatures in the ponds and stream in the peaceful meadow. We split into 3 groups to rotate round the exciting activities including: pond dipping, stream dipping and sketching.

We all met a man called Richard, and he guided us through the day and made the creatures that we caught and, with all his high tech equipment, was able to put them on to a large screen. He could make anything 50 times bigger.

Local Whitchurch resident Jonathan Taylor, who is licensed to survey newts, set up 22 traps throughout the Meadow on the eve of 6th June 2010 and collected them the next morning. Read about his results on our Newt Survey page.
