Because of the appealing shape of the dimple bottle a lot of people bought them and gave them as gifts which remained unopened so there are a lot of bottles out there.

The bottle shape has been in use since the 1893 for the first 30 years was called Haig & Haig 5 Stars Scots Whisky apart for a short period during the first world war when it was only available in a standard bottle descibed in adverts of the time as the "Substitute War bottle"

The first time the Dimple name appeared in the "pinched bottle" as the brand was 1923

After the repeal of prohibition the export bottles where marketed under the "Pinch" brand for the US market It is still marketed as such.

The bottle shape was finnally patened in 1958 and during late 1950s the gilded mesh imported from France was added to bottle.

The Dimple is still being produced Present day bottling retails at £35

Hence the value for a modern (last 20 years) metric %ABV standard bottle with the Queen Elizabeth warrant is low.

Other bottling with the king warrants on them have a higher value because of the age and also there are some limited editions that have higher collectors values.

As I stated in my opening statement there are a lot of bottles out there and I recieve daily requests about Dimple so a chance of actually selling I think is low.

I have no access to batch numbers and cannot find references for the subtle changes in the white names printed directly onto the bottle used ie (Haig's, Haig & Haig, Dimple, Pinch) all used on the bottles over the 1950-70 time frame. This could because the names where used for a particular supply contract or market.

Also there has been a lot of takeovers and mergers and this information has been lost into the huge corporate that is now Diageo

Prices depend on clean tidy labels, the seal being intact and a high level in the neck.

Like all whisky when sealed in a bottle does not go off and is perfectly drinkable.

The name pinch is for the American market the whisky in the UK is called dimple both names refer to the shape of the bottle.

Glenmorangie Port Wood Finish 43% Single Malt Scotch Whisky

From a previous series of Glenmorangie Wood Finish Bottlings now discontinued and much sought after by collectors

This unique malt whisky was initially matured in American oak casks and then transferred into casks or ‘pipes’ which have previously contained Port for a further period of maturation.

Colour:- Antique copper: golden, but with a rosey hue.

Nose;- With a drop of water, the key aromas are of butterscotch and dark chocolate, but with fresh minty notes and a trace of dryness, like lint. There is some sandalwood here, and citrus fruit – oranges, perhaps tangerine – even a hint of allspice. With a little more water, lighter scents begin to emerge: grass and hay, hazelnuts and candied peel.

Taste:- The mouthfeel is voluptuously smooth, like sipping velvet. The entire palate is engaged – a most interesting and complex balance of sweet and dry flavours. The bitter chocolate and the fresh mintiness noted as aromas are apparent. In the satisfying, lingering finish, a hint of port reveals itself for the first time, along with walnuts.

Finish:- A remarkable whisky, perfect after a good meal or to savour at any time.

As a New York State Farm Distillery, they only use New York State fruits and grains for their spirits. Most of the ingredients used comes within a 50 mile radius of the distillery.

To me, this latter point is the true measure of a whisky's quality.

Their whiskies have unusual names like THE PEAT MONSTER and HEDONISM, and the labels are contemporary in style. It's all part of their vision: taking a contemporary approach to a traditional product.

What if Compass Box was to apply its whiskymaking principles to a line of Blended Scotches? That is exactly what they are doing with Great King Street. The first release is called 'Artist's Blend'.Five key things set apart their approach to making 'Artist's Blend' from any other Blended Scotch Whisky brand.

1. Great Grain. First, start with the very highest quality single grain Scotch whiskies. Grain whiskies are the foundation of good Blended Scotch. The grain whisky is from a renowned Lowland distillery and all of it is aged in 'first fill' American oak barrels, which makes the grain whisky much richer and sweeter on the palate than those aged in larger, refill casks.

2. More Malt. Secondly, a higher proportion of malt whisky than most other Blends. 'Artist's Blend' consists of almost 50% malt whisky, far more than the 30 or 40% most blends use. This provides more character and complexity.

3. Better Oak. At Compass Box they are known for their fanaticism about quality oak casks. Every cask of whisky used to make 'Artist's Blend' is of a much higher quality than is typical in Scotch whisky: first-fill American oak casks, first-fill European oak ex-Sherry butts and, something no other Blended Scotch uses, new oak. In this case, new, heavily-toasted French oak.

4. Bottled Naturally. Unlike any other Blended Scotch whisky known of, 'Artist's Blend' is bottled at its natural colour (no E150 colouring agent added at all!) and without the chill filtration prior to bottling that most Scotch whiskies go through. This leaves the whisky full of its natural complexity and mouthfeel.

5. Traditional Strength. the 'Artist's Blend' is botteled at 43% alcohol by volume, a strength traditionally used in Scotland many years ago. We bottle at this strength so 'Artist's Blend' has more presence and character when mixed with soda as a Highball, or in cocktails.

Colour: sunshine on warm copper.

Nose: like a thunderstorm, the aromas burst from the glass like some kind of hebrideam firecracker - exploding with peat, bracken, heather roots, turf, oak, charcoal, marine pitch and gusting sea squalls - it’s flying! -- the slipstream reveals sherry - mellow, rich and nutty; followed by bourbon - sweet vanilla and russian toffee. then you find yourself in the eye of the storm: and the fruity aromas drift in - green apples, gooseberry, honeyed limes then a brief respite from the returning storm, which as the spirit warms on the back of the palate, brings an infusion of all the elements that make this island’s whiskies so special.

Takes a lead in education around new whisky laws

Releases valedictory Last Vatted Malt limited edition

Compass Box Whisky Co. is to take a lead in the educational drive around the new laws on Scotch whisky that come into force from Wednesday 23^rd November 2011.

To mark the occasion, Compass Box will release a limited edition bottling, the Last Vatted Malt, made from a marriage of fine, old single malt whiskies from Islay and Speyside distilleries, that will be the last whisky to be labelled legally as a Vatted Malt.

As Compass Box founder and whiskymaker John Glaser explains: “At midnight on November 22^nd, 2011, an era ends. After that point, it will be illegal for whiskymakers to use the term Vatted Malt to describe a Scotch whisky made from the combination of two or more single malts. From 23^rd November 2011, this style of whisky will by law have to be labelled as a Blended Malt Scotch Whisky. Vatted Malt is a term that has been in use since at least the 19^th century. It represents a style of whisky in which Compass Box specialise, so it has special meaning for us. Therefore we have decided to take a lead in the education of whisky drinkers about the new legal definitions of the 5 styles of Scotch whisky. We feel that this is an important change to the law that needs to be explained to whisky lovers. As the new laws come into effect, we want to take this opportunity to educate, to look to the future and to help the industry as a whole.”

The new legislation is all encompassing and was introduced by the UK Parliament as The Scotch Whisky Regulations in 2009. However, the five new legal definitions of Scotch whisky styles, as well as some other areas, will become enforceable by law from 23^rd November 2011. The new definitions will be:

Blended Scotch Whisky: a blend of one or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies with one or more Single Grain Scotch Whiskies.

Blended Malt Scotch Whisky: a blend of two or more Single Malt Scotch Whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery. (previously known as Vatted Malt or Pure Malt Scotch Whisky)

Blended Grain Scotch Whisky: a blend of two or more Single Grain Scotch Whiskies that have been distilled at more than one distillery. (previously known as Vatted Grain Scotch Whisky)

Single Malt Scotch Whisky: a Scotch Whisky that has been distilled in pot stills in one or more batches at a single distillery from water and malted barley, without the addition of any other cereals.

Single Grain Scotch Whisky: a Scotch Whisky that has been distilled at a single distillery except Single Malt Scotch Whisky or a Blended Scotch Whisky.

Whiskymerchants Update

The www.whiskymerchants.co.uk website was started about 4 years ago on an old browser size of about 760 pixels. Well having witnessed my own browser size increase on the computers I now use, and noticing the increasing unused real estate on either side of the website I have finally plucked up courage to increase the page size. I did have worry's that it would all collapse around me as soon as I clicked the new width button. Pages would be to short or vanish, slide shows and video wouldn't run. However so far, everything I know works and found I have won all this extra space. (Wow ! 23% for nothing)

What I plan is to add my social media links, increase the images with more photo slide shows and pop up galleries showing the different bottlings. an awards table, and anything else I can think of that is relative to that whisky.

So for the moment I am working through the width adjustments for each page and depending on where I am will add the extra info. By doing this the whole website will get a total review and I will maybe spot some of the typos this one eyed one fingered typist is known for.

Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard is adding to its collection of Single Pot Still Whiskeys of Midleton* this weekend at Whisky Live Paris**, with the launch of Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength – the portfolio’s first permanent cask strength bottling. This latest addition to the Redbreast range forms part of the company’s ongoing commitment to promote the provenance and quality of this unique Irish whiskey style.

Produced at Midleton Distillery, Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength is Redbreast in its natural full-flavoured state – straight from the cask, non-chill filtered and without the addition of water. Bottled at 57.7% ABV, this first batch will be available from September 2011 in Ireland, France and Germany and in the US from February next year.

Brendan Buckley, Global Category Development Director for Irish whiskey at Irish Distillers, said: “Over the years, we’ve had great encouragement from whiskey enthusiasts and fans of the renowned Redbreast range to launch a cask strength expression, and we’re delighted to be finally releasing this incredible single pot still whiskey in response. It comes during what has been an exciting year for the range, having recently undergone a packaging revamp to freshen it up and reinforce its quality cues. We are confident that this latest development will be enthusiastically received by Redbreast fans around the world.”

Barry Crockett, Master Distiller at Midleton Distillery, added: “This is a very special single pot still whiskey, full of dried fruit flavours, with an exceedingly long finish. It is the perfect addition to the Redbreast range – representing the expression in its purest state. Redbreast represents a style of whiskey that is unique to Ireland in general and to Midleton Distillery in particular. Single pot still whiskey is made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley, which is then distilled in traditional copper pot stills. Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength, and all single pot still whiskeys from Midleton, is triple distilled.

About Redbreast

The origins of Redbreast whiskey date back to 1887 and was originally the brand name given to the whiskey supplied by the Jameson distillery to the Gilbey whiskey bonders, before bottling at the distillery became the norm in 1968. As the practice of selling whiskey to bonders ended in the late 1960s, brands such as Redbreast all but disappeared, until Redbreast 12 Year Old was relaunched by Irish Distillers Pernod Ricard in the 1990s as a single pot still whiskey.

Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength joins the original Redbreast 12 Year Old and Redbreast 15 Year Old in the range. Full to the rafters with aroma and flavor, Redbreast displays the hallmark influence of whiskey matured in combination of first fill Spanish Oloroso sherry casks and American bourbon whisky barrels.

Redbreast 12 Year Old Cask Strength Tasting Notes

Nose: A fruit explosion: figs, dates, ripe banana, sultanas, red apple and lime. Pot still spices combine with the sweet vanilla and pine from the casks.

Taste: Deep full dried fruit, a touch of citrus with aromatic oils and spices. Vanilla sweetness leads to toasted oak and barley.

Finish: Exceedingly long finish with a rich complexity of spices and fruit, slowly fading through sweet butterscotch to barley.

Sorry I have been neglecting this blog this last couple of weeks.

My Daughter has just started at the Solent University and didn't like the "Animal House" accommodation that she was allocated. So with her friend they have been flat hunting and have found a very nice flat. Only the second one they looked at and cheaper than the University wanted per month. In an unbelievable location.

Tip: We have discovered that the "Student Market" landlords know how much each Student gets or has for accommodation so they charge their property at just above that going rate per bedroom. so the quality of "student" accommodation is over priced for what you get.

If you search for "accommodation" rather than "Student accommodation" thinking SA is going to be cheap, you will find better properties at a lower rent.

So you see the last couple of weeks has been spent with all that is involved with setting up a new flat, legals and equipping made all the more interesting with the move from Yorkshire.

Now I am back in work full time again I hope to get back to a more dedicated service.

Craigallachie Single Malt Scotch Whisky Tasting Note;

On the nose it is spiced and raisiny - with an interesting richness akin to freshpeaches in a wood carry box.

Paletewise it is full and sweetly barley'd - peppery - with more (now macerated) soft dark fruit very much evident.

All this leads to a considerably drier finish with hints oftobacco, ginger and nutmeg.

This unique expression was initially matured in European oak and thereafter finished its maturation in a

very small batch of Tawny Port casks, which have given the final whisky its own range of unique flavours and aromas.

Tasting notes :-

Appearance : Prominent rose-wine hue, built around a light copper orange core.

Nose : Stewed damsons and plum conserve. Raisins, sultanas and fine grand cru choclate provide lovely depth and structure.

Palate : Fruit shortcake drenched in vanilla custard, with a scattering of dried figs, dates and wild strawberries. Smooth tannins and light acidity highlight a wonderfully long finish.

Finish : A fruit laden whisky to enliven the taste buds.

Fred van Zuidam founded the distillery in 1975 with the intention of creating a small distillery that only produced very exclusive quality product range, This distillery occupied only 300 square metres consisting of 1 small still and a single production line.

Distillery Production Methods

Traditional Dutch Windmills mill the malted barley that is used to produce Zuidam Malt Whisky. By using this method for milling for their malted barley the distillery helps preserve the important Dutch heritage of the world famous windmills. Even more importantly the traditional millstones of the windmills slowly grind the malted barley into flour. This traditional way of milling causes almost no increase in the temperature of the grain and thus helps preserve the wonderful aroma’s available from the malt.
