Today James will be swinging by to record a new episode of Spoiler Alert! and hopefully, if I decided I’d rather do some post-production work than watch a documentary on weirdo fans’ love of mislabeled Goblin films you could be listening to a new podcast from us as early as this evening.

Of course their are a few caveats, the first of which is that James hasn’t actually seen the movie yet, but since he will be watching it here, right before we record, we could get some interesting commentary from him. Or he could just become disgusted and shut it off and leave us up shit creek.

Then of course their is the fact that my house doesn’t have a doorbell, which opens a whole boatload of issues. Will James even make it in the door? Will he stand outside for 3 minutes and simply leave? Now, I have informed him that he does have the ability to knock, but really, there’s no telling what James will do when push comes to shove.

As for the film? I’d alluded to it earlier but if you really want to know, the trailer is after the break. Otherwise, talk to ya soon!
Now, I love The Riverview, but its not the best theatre in the Twin Cities, that designation clearly belongs to The Heights. But now my issue. The Heights isn’t even on the damn list?!?!

Hey Twin Cities, do you even like movies?

The Heights screening Metropolis with an organist accompanying is the movie event of the year in this town. Where is it going to be? The Heights (potentially, Take-Up hasn’t confirmed anything yet). But yeah, if that happens there is no better show in town.

As for the list:

1 – Lagoon
2 – Uptown
3 – Riverview
4 – Southdale
5 – St Anthony Main
6 – Edina
7 – Oak Street
8 – Parkway
9 – Eden Prairie
10 – Rosedale

Congrats to Landmark for nabbing 3 of the Top 6 spots as all three have earned their reps by continually presenting some of the best films you’ll see in the Twin Cities. Also nice to see that 7 of the 10 theatres on the list specialize in Indie films and repertory programming. But why the Oak Street is on there is beyond me since its been dark for what, 7 months now? In fact, I don’t believe a single movie was shown at the Oak Street this year, so kudos to having it on the list Twin Cities!

Also strange to see 3 AMC theatres on the list as they are fairly awful places to watch movies, so I’m guessing the fact they are dirt cheap is the reason why people love them.

In a semi-related not, the Block E Theatre finally fell of the Top Ten places to be shot in the face while enjoying a night on the town and moved up to having its restrooms named as one of the Top 10 places to have sex in. Baby steps Block E. Baby steps.

A stint in prison usually has one of two effects on a man – it either breaks him down or makes him stronger. For Driver (Dwayne Johnson), a 10-year sentence proved the latter. His strength was not just fueled by time, but also by a hunger to avenge the murder of his brother during the botched bank robbery that led to his own imprisonment. Untouchable on the ‘inside,’ he made plenty of enemies in prison – men who were counting the days until his release so they could exact their own revenge on the outside. Now, on the day of his release, he is hell-bent on reaping vengeance upon the four men responsible for his brother’s murder. With a list of names and addresses in hand, he sprints out of the prison gates and is immediately on his mission.

No regard for witnesses. No finesse to the acts. One down. Check. Within hours of Driver eliminating the first name on the list, two men are on his trail – Cop (Billy Bob Thornton), a veteran police officer just days from retirement, and Killer (Oliver Jackson-Cohen), a young egocentric hitman with a flair for the art of killing. The hunter is now also the hunted.

Without hesitation, Driver methodically continues down his list while the mystery deepens surrounding his brother’s murder and who might have tipped off those responsible to their robbery plans. With each killing, Driver finds himself face to face with Cop or Killer and he evades them every time. Killer wants Driver now more than ever – he’s finally met a worthy opponent. Thus begins a do or die race to the list’s finish with new details in the decade old murder emerging along the way…hinting that Driver’s list may be incomplete and his life in further danger.

Faster is released on November 24th, 2010.

AD 117. The Roman Empire stretches from Egypt to Spain, and East as far as the Black Sea. But in northern Britain, the relentless onslaught of conquest has ground to a halt in face of the guerrilla tactics of an elusive enemy: the savage and terrifying tribes known as the Picts.

Quintus, sole survivor of a Pictish raid on a Roman frontier fort, marches north with General Virilus’ legendary Ninth Legion, under orders to wipe the Picts from the face of the earth and destroy their leader Gorlacon.

But when the legion is ambushed on unfamiliar ground, and Virilus taken captive, Quintus faces a desperate struggle to keep his small platoon alive behind enemy lines, evading remorseless Pict pursuers over harsh terrain, as the band of soldiers race to rescue their General, and to reach the safety of the Roman frontier.

Centurion opens at the Landmark Lagoon Theatre on August 27th.

Relationships seem to end and begin everywhere, all the time. But like the parts of the body, each person in our lives has a purpose, makes a difference and leaves a mark. We find two pairs of twenty-something friends as they struggle to accept the state of their relationships or lack thereof. A twittering jewel of a person named Jem attempts to wreak havoc on their lives by breaking people apart and putting them together, performing her idea of romantic surgery. But sometimes, the natural course of life and romance needs to simply take its course. Join Melissa, Brooke, Jeff and Michael as they try to find who they are, what they want, and who they want to be to each other.

I don’t know much about the film, but from what I do know I am certainly intrigued at its fascinating premise and its potential promise of giving an in depth and behind the scenes look at various members of South American governments and just how they are trying to transform their countries and the region, even while the US seemingly does its best to thwart those efforts.

Summary
There’s a revolution underway in South America, but most of the world doesn’t know it. Oliver Stone sets out on a road trip across five countries to explore the social and political movements as well as the mainstream media’s misperception of South America while interviewing seven of its elected presidents. In casual conversations with Presidents Hugo Chávez (Venezuela), Evo Morales (Bolivia), Lula da Silva (Brazil), Cristina Kirchner (Argentina), as well as her husband and ex-President N?stor Kirchner, Fernando Lugo (Paraguay), Rafael Correa (Ecuador), and Raúl Castro (Cuba), Stone gains unprecedented access and sheds new light upon the exciting transformations in the region.

The trailer for M Night Shyamalan’s (sort of) upcoming film, Devil, was attached to the print. Now for those of you who haven’t watched the trailer let me assure you that it is a pretty solid trailer, and does a good job of building suspense for a film that looks like it might actually be scary.

Now as the trailer was playing it was pretty evident that the crowd was into the film and was intrigued on just what it was. And for those of you who haven’t seen the trailer yet it should be noted that the trailer doesn’t reveal M Night’s participation with it until it is about three fourths of the way through. And that is when things got interesting.

As I said the crowd was into the trailer, but as soon as M Night’s name popped up on the screen the entire theatre (roughly 275 people) either groaned or laughed their asses off. It was a complete 180 turn and I’ve never seen anything like it. Honestly, if the guy was standing in the auditorium they damn near might have lynched him. Which is a shame because they guy is clearly a talented filmmaker and the trailer certainly makes the film appear as if it might be pretty damn good.

But clearly this is evidence as to why M Night’s name is being pulled from any future advertising for the film. The viewing public has turned on him, even though he still continues to make good, albeit flawed, films. Ah well.

Anyone else witness a similar occurrence when viewing the trailer in the theatre?

While most of that is due to me devoting most of my time trying to buy a house, some of it is also due to me considering a revamp of the feature. As much as I love pimping out Landmark, I’m leaning more and more everyday to trying to make this a more comprehensive Coming Son list that has as many of the various Independent film releases that occur all of the Twin Cities.

Sure that’s going to potentially give me a ton more work to add to this, but at the same time it should make for a much better list for film fans living in the Cities.

But then I think about how much work it will be so I keep putting it off.

Well, nothing more outside of the thinnest of plot details, which at this point point to Rango being a chameleon having an existential crisis of some degree, and who dreams of being a swashbuckling hero until he stumbles upon a town terrorized by bandits and he has to live this role and protect them. Granted this plot line is alluding more towards Seven Samurai than any of the films about a certain wandering ronin, but hey, I’ll get my Kurosawa fix any way I can get it. Even if it comes from a chameleon.

Rango is scheduled to open in the US on March 4th of next year.

Now, does that mean Robert Pattinson will be in St Louis Park tomorrow night? I don’t know and I’m not sure when I will know. If I was a betting man I’d put money on it being Elizabeth Reaser, whom Twin Cities cinephiles will know from the Indie hit Sweet Land from 2005 which was a Minnesota production that turned into a massive hit here in the Twin Cities and propelled Reaser to an Independent Spirit Award Nomination for Best Female Lead.

Sure she isn’t the sex symbol most of the members of Team Jacob and Edward are clamoring for, but she’s a damn good actress and she’s totally deserving of more recognition. Of course, I am basing this entirely on my own suppositions, so its just as likely Kristen Stewart will be the one strolling through St Louis Park tomorrow night.

But as more and more details emerge about the American/British remake I can’t help but be impressed. From the great casting (Chloe Moretz and Kodi Smit-McPhee are about as good as one could hope for for the leads), to a solid choice to have Cloverfield director Matt Reeves put at the helm, to Hammer Films proclaiming that this will be the film that launches their brand as a new force in the horror genre I can’t help but think, dammit this just might work.

Then they released the international trailer and my greatest hopes seem to not only be realized, but possibly were not even thinking grand enough.

This movie is going to be amazing.
Their isn’t a ton of content on it at the moment, but we’ve set a pretty rigorous schedule for updates so you should see plenty of interesting additions in the future. I know I plan on writing a few posts about how I came up with some of my story ideas and possibly admitting just how much of each story is actually true and how much is me lying through my teeth.

While I know some of the others plan on possibly posting more euphictional stories on the website, I’m not sure if I will though the idea intrigues me. Its more to do with time limitations than anything, as working two jobs and having four websites tends to stretch me a little thin at times.

But for now I want to thank everyone who has bought the book so far and once again encourage people to download our sampler and then take the plunge. I think you’ll be very happy that you did.

While at the previous chain I worked for we were able to go to press screenings, we also screened anything that we thought looked interesting pretty much whenever we felt like it. It was a pretty awesome part of that job.

But at my new chain I was introduced to something very different, preview screenings that were required of all managers working the night before a changeover. You see, evidently other chains had people who weren’t very good at building prints, so managers were required to watch every single print of every single new movie they would be opening as soon as the prints were built. That meant I’d be paid to sit and watch movies for a whole day. Which is awesome when the movies are good, and which sucks when they aren’t.

Which brings me to Twilight: Eclipse, a movie I have claimed on numerous occasions someone couldn’t even pay me to watch. It seems I was incorrect on that statement, though to be fair if I didn’t perform this task I would have lost my job, so clearly I was going through the kind of extreme duress seen only in Lifetime movies.

Which segues nicely into Twilight: Eclipse, which at its best could maybe be considered a good Lifetime movie, but really, that’s being overly kind to the fat girl who is asking you if she looks skinny in her new dress.

You see, Twilight: Eclipse sucks. And not in the fun, sparkly way its fans claims it does.

No, this is a movie that was so bad that even though I was paid to watch it, I still went up to the box office to demand my money back.

But on the plus side I now know never to date anyone who likes this bilge. Seriously ladies, stop eating your feelings and go kiss a dude. Its way more fun than this crap. You’ll even find that your chances of getting laid go up by a factor of 20. Bonus!

With little fanfare, the Showplace ICON Theatre at the Shops at West End in St Louis Park has added an additional two 3-D screens, upping its total number of 3-D screens to seven, allowing it to once again claim the title of having the most 3-D screens in the Twin Cities and possibly Minnesota. And while reviews may be mixed on how much people enjoy 3-D, the box office numbers do little to indicate anything than 3-D being an industry staple from here on out.

But perhaps even more impressive was the coinciding move made out at the Showplace Icon, that of add Dolby 7.1 surround sound to its four largest auditoriums, marking it as only the fifth theatre in Minnesota to boast the technology and the only theatre in the Twin Cities that can make the claim (the next closest theatre with 7.1 is in Oakdale).

The reason for adding both of these additions was of course the release of Toy Story 3, which is the first major theatrical release that boasted 7.1 surround sound. Right now it seems Disney of all places is the primary studio leading the charge towards 7.1 surround sound. It might even surprise people to find out that 7.1 isn’t the standard in the vast majority of theatres spanning the globe, but rather 5.1. And for the home video enthusiasts, now that true 7.1 is being offered for theatrical releases you’ll start seeing more true 7.1 Blu Rays being made available rather than trussed up 5.1 discs.

And while I fully admit to being a Showplace Icon employee, the addition of 7.1 to our theatre only solidifies my belief that our Theatre #1 is the best house to watch a movie in in the Twin Cities. Which is saying something because their are a heck of a lot of great houses in this town.

As for the next big theatrical release to boast 7.1 surround sound? Its Step Up 3 (or 3-D as the case may be in some theatres). Which means I know exactly where Joe will be on opening day.
