SCVNGR is a game where you go places and do challenges to unlock badges and earn points. Complete all the challenges in Coulter Library's Trek by Thanksgiving break and you could win prizes.

You can play Coulter Library's version of the game by using your smart phone via an app or text messaging. You can also play by completing a paper version that is available at the library service counters.

Anyone that completes all the challenges successfully by November 22, 2011 and provides current contact information will be entered into a drawing for various prizes including iTunes gift cards and gift certificates from local area merchants.

Retro Game Night
Join us dressed in your best school spirit outfit Sunday, October 2, from 6-8pm as we celebrate OCC's 50th Anniversary. Play board games from the past, complete a history-themed scavenger hunt, test your skills at guessing games and play "Minute to Win It" challenges.

Library Research Awards

The Library Research Awards Committee invites the submission of papers written during the 2010-2011 academic year. First, second and third place recipients will receive cash awards [$250, $150 and $100] and be recognized for their academic achievement during the final faculty meeting of the Spring 2011 semester.

Any member of the OCC faculty may submit student research papers, after obtaining the student's permission to do so. Submission must come from a faculty member. If a student would like to submit a paper, s/he should contact the faculty member who assigned the paper.

Guidelines

Criteria for selection: in addition to "quality and effectiveness" the committee is especially eager to read papers that show students "catching the fire" of research and writing."Catching the fire" is our way of describing what happens when students dive - headlong and with gusto! - into a critical examination of vital questions or issues. We are looking for papers that go beyond the mere reporting of the results of their research.

Submissions should include: the paper, a cover sheet containing the student's name, faculty member's name, the course and section number and a copy of the writing assignment.

Papers ("clean" copies only, please) and cover sheets should be submitted to Jeff Harr, Chair of the Library, on or before May 6, 2011.

Monday (4/11) there will be photos taken throughout the day to create "A Day in the Life at Coulter Library".
Participants also needed for Minute to Win It challenges on Wed. (4/13) at 11:30 and 5 pm. There will be challenges set-up through the library. Be sure to stop in.

“Popular Reading” Collection

The "Popular Reading” collection at Coulter Library was inspired by students requesting something to read, “just for fun”. Included in this collection are works by popular young contemporary authors in genres such as manga, urban fiction, romances, and graphic novels. Selected non-fiction books about popular contemporary topics (music, sports, etc.) are included as well.

This collection can be easily searched in the Coulter Library online catalog. Use the “Advanced Search”, and limit your search to “Popular Reading” (in the “More Collections” pull-down menu at the bottom). The collection is a work in progress, so check back often!

OCC in the 1960's

Two new displays featuring materials from the OCC Archives Department can be seen in both glass display cases on the first floor of Coulter Library, directly across from the Reference Desk. These displays exhibit important events and interesting traditions of the college in the 1960's.

On one side, photos, college newspaper articles, yearbooks, and other memorabilia highlight groundbreaking activities and dedication ceremonies marking OCC's move from the Midtown Plaza building in downtown Syracuse to its current campus in the Town of Onondaga. See what the campus looked like back in 1963!

You can also see an interesting piece of OCC history in the opposite case. This display features, photos, college newspaper articles, student handbooks, (and the actual light blue freshman "beanies") showing what life was like for incoming freshmen in the 1960's. See freshmen and sophomores battle it out in the annual "tug o' war" competition or read about the dreaded "Kangaroo Court."

New American History Database

We recently added a new history research database to our library collection.

American Periodicals Series Online
This database contains over 1,000 periodicals that first began publishing between 1740 and 1900, including special interest and general magazines, literary and professional journals, children’s and women’s magazines, and many other historically-significant periodicals.
