Samhain 2009

Samhain is one of the four greater Sabbats in Wicca. It lies opposite Beltane on the Wheel of the Year. Samhain is November Eve also known as the Celtic New Year.

How we celebrate Samhain: We prepare for a ritual with two altars. We have one Altar for the living, (us) and one for the dead, (our Ancestors). We often have one man sit out the main ritual to play the part of the Ferryman, the boatman who transported souls across the River Styx to the Underworld.

Day and night are equal as Summer comes to an end and Autumn begins. The colours of the leaves will very soon start to change if they have not already in some parts of Canada. The growing season is at end and Harvest time is in full swing. The Second Harvest of the year is under way and soon the Earth will sleep for the long cold Winter and all life will seem as though it is gone.

It seems very much like summer has never shown up here in Ontario. The first harvest (Lughnasadh) has come and gone and we're still waiting for July to show up. Where is the heat wave and drought? On the up side, we have great grass this year!

Lughnasadh marked the beginning of the harvest season, the ripening of first fruits, and was traditionally a time of community gatherings, market festivals, horse races and reunions with distant family and friends.

Among the Irish it was a favored time for handfastings - trial marriages that would generally last a year and a day, with the option of ending the contract before the new year, or later formalizing it as a more permanent marriage.

Carline and I have been very busy, rather overwhelmed with moving to our new home over the last couple of months. We are finally getting settled but there is still much to be done until July. When the dust settles and we get things back to normal and the newsletters will get back on track. But until then I am combining the Sabbat Missive and New Arrivals into one issue.
