What does an iPad do for seniors? I began asking myself this question just the other day thinking about what grandpa would be doing if I gave him an iPad for his birthday. After listing down the items that will benefit grandpa, I came to the conclusion that even though it will take him some time to learn how to maneuver  around the iPad, it will make his world a lot better to live in. This also applies to everyone else who is aged 60 years and above, the seniors.

So, what does an iPad do for seniors? Let’s find out.

Reading Newspapers, Magazines and Books Online

It was back a few weeks ago that I saw my dad reading an article from a newspaper. The font sizes were so small that he had to hold the article near to his face, squint his eyes and have his finger guide through where he was reading. It was just that day that he had left his glasses in his bedroom and had wanted to read the papers in the living room.

Thinking about what does an iPad do for seniors like him, I was thoroughly convinced that the iPad was the solution as maneuvering through an articles on an iPad was the way to go. With the iPad, he could resize, scroll and change articles with just 2 fingers. Not to mention the weight of these iPads (more so with the iPad mini) being much lighter than that of a whole stack of newspaper, magazines or book. Weather Forecast and Tides at Sea – Fishing?

A mate of mine was just telling me the other day about his deep sea fishing experience 50kms from Fremantle here in Perth. You could say that his whole family is very passionate about their fishing and they’d grab the chance every time a public holiday comes to go out to sea and fish for the whole day, the whole entire day, rain or shine. That brought to my attention that it could have been raining deep at sea and he wouldn’t have known about it until he had got to the fishing charters. To avoid being caught out, he could check the weather forecast and water tides when planning their fishing trip.

More so for his senior parents, if they happen to want to go fishing when everyone else is at work, they’ll need to check the water tides to plan their trip. That’s where I believe an iPad comes in. With the mobility and user-friendly interface, the iPad is perfect for seniors as they can bring it around and at any instance, be able to check the weather forecast and tides at sea. This is great not only for fishing but also for planning picnics, outings with friends and family, and not to mention planning outdoor lawn balls.

Accessibility for Seniors with Diminishing Sense and Reduced Mobility

If it’s anything age is related to, it’s our diminishing senses and mobility. The iPad is light weight and can be brought everywhere. This makes the internet accessible for anyone without the need to go to their desks to use the computer.

The way we maneuver in the iPad is also quite user friendly such that you only need 2 fingers to do almost everything you need in an Ipad. You could scroll and change pages with the flick of a finger.

For those that have diminishing sight, the quick enlarge function by either double tapping on the screen or stretching the page with 2 fingers helps the user see the items on the screen clearer. It has to be mentioned that the resolution of the screen is of high quality, so there will be no loss in image detail with the quick picture resizing.

To stick or add a bookmark, finger tap the top of the page for the iBook options bar. Then tap the little ribbon bookmark at the top right corner of the iBook page. A ribbon book mark will be placed on the page. This will bookmark the whole page.

To highlight a passage of text, start by tapping and holding anywhere in the text passage. Then select the beginning and end of the passage using the blue selection marker. After that, select the Highlight button that shows up on the screen. Note that the colour of the highlighter can be changed.

To lay out notes or leave reminders on a passage of text, you can use a sticky note on the page. Tap and hold, then use the blue selection marker to choose the text that you would like to add your sticky note to. Tap the note button for a yellow sticky note to show up. You can type your notes or reminders here. Your stick note will be located at the side of the passage chosen. I did say that I will teach you taking iPad iBook Notes didn’t I?

To review and keep track of your bookmarks, highlighted texts and sticky notes, tap the top of the page and select the Table of Content from the Options bar. After that, tap the Bookmarks title and you will be brought to a section that populates all your bookmarks, highlighted text and sticky notes. Tap on any of them and you’ll be brought to the assigned page. The notes in the sticky notes are readable as well, so you can review what you wrote when taking iPad iBook notes prior to signing off from reading a page.

Before we begin we will need 2 items. A computer that has internet connection and iTunes installed, and the iPad included cable. So here’s how to update your iPad iOS.

Open iTunes on your computer. For Windows, select the Help on the top menu and for Apple Mac, select iTunes on the menu bar. For both Windows and Mac, click on ‘Check for Updates’. A popup window will notify you whether your iTunes software is an outdated version. If the popup says an update is available, follow the instructions and download the iTunes software update.

How to Update Your iPad iOS: iOS 6

When finished updating iTunes, plug the iPad to your computer via the included cable. First, we need to backup all your important information saved in your iPad, into your computer so you don’t lose anything after the iOS update. In the iTunes sidebar list, select your iPad. After that, click on the ‘Sync’ button on the lower right. When you’re in sync, create a backup of your iPad data. Also, you can transfer your purchases from the iPad to iTunes. In the same sidebar list, select ‘Transfer Purchases’. Remember the steps: Sync, Backup and Transfer Purchases.

After backing up your iPad data, you can commence downloading the latest iPad iOS update. In the iTunes left sidebar, select your iPad. Click on ‘Summary’ on the iTunes top menu to go to the Summary tab. Then click the ‘Update’ button under the Version section. iTunes will now link up to Apple’s servers to download the latest iOS update. When a window pops up, click on ‘Update’ and it will notify you of the specific updates in your download. Click next and the Terms and Conditions of the update will appear. Make sure you read through this and click on ‘Agree’. The updating process will take a bit of time.

When completed downloading, your iPad will restart automatically. The iPad lock screen will appear and this will confirm that your iPad iOS has been updated to the latest version. Introducing the iPad Mini

With the new iPad mini, you can perform all functions of the iPad even more smoothly in the physical sense as the iPad mini can fit in just one hand. This does not by any means mean a loss in screen resolution quality. The sharp 1024 x 768 display resolution of the larger iPad2 is retained in the iPad mini. Performance-wise, the dual-core A5 chip gives the iPad mini enough speed to give a fast and fluid performance. Battery-life is 10 hours, which is longer than most tablets.

So, I went to the iPad Video Lessons guide to find out how to lock iPad screen rotation. This was found in the Beginner’s Bootcamp section of the course. To see the course for yourself, click here and you will be taken to the iPad video lessons website.

For my older version iPad, I can switch the screen rotation lock, which is located at the top left slide button on the iPad. Easy!  Sometimes, I forget that the iPad screen rotation is locked. A little arrow is shown on the screen and the lock icon on the top right of the screen will remind you that the lock is activated.

For the latest iPad update, which is most of the newer iPads on sale now, the top left slide button is now an audio mute switch. To lock the screen rotation, double click the home button and flick the bottom multitask bar to the right. The new screen rotation lock icon is located on the left of the new bar. Enable the screen rotation lock and the current screen orientation will be locked until you disable the lock. It’s not as straight forward as the older iPad version but still, it’s only 3 clicks and a swipe away. So now you know how to lock iPad screen rotation feature. Looking back, if I hadn’t done it, I would’ve been spending a lot more time doing things the long way. A perfect example is the multitasking function in iPad where I can run a few applications at the same time and not needing to close of any of them as I switch between applications. I highly recommend it to anyone who wants to get to know your iPad better and wants to get the most out of your iPad.

These days, I bring my iPad with me whenever I go out to meet with friends and family. It brings the convenience of being able to show my photos to family, browsing the internet on the go, reading an eBook while waiting for the train, and even entertaining my niece with a video or two.
