To create awareness for the need of rescue dog adoptions we at Bows-N-Ties created Dogs-N-Ties. Together with the San Francisco SPCA we designed 6 different dog patterns that were handprinted on fine silk ties for the men, and matching scarves for the women. Each item was only made 100 times, and all profits from the sale of these pieces are being donated to the SFSPCA. In total we aim to raise at least $30,000 by the Holidays.

"The Food and Drug Administration, it appears, could use a team of bloodhounds permanently stationed in China.

Nearly six years after the first reports of pet deaths linked to chicken, duck and sweet potato jerky treats, FDA officials say they still haven't tracked down the culprit.

Repeated tests at manufacturing plants in China, the source of the majority of the toxic treats, have yet to yield a definitive cause, according to the federal agency.

So FDA officials are appealing to pet owners and veterinarians to send them more information about pets who've fallen ill or died after eating jerky treats. Reports can be made at www.fda.gov.

The FDA, meanwhile, is proceeding with the creation of new regulations for pet food, part of a larger overhaul of the nation's food safety laws. The rules would require manufacturers to develop and follow plans for animal food safety.

The new regulations, if monitored closely, appear to be a step forward for consumers who - quite clearly - are left guessing about the safety of much of what they buy for their pets.

The push for regulation was spurred in part by the biggest recall of pet food in U.S. history six years ago, when it was learned that dog and cat food from a Chinese manufacturer contained melamine, a compound used in plastics. More than 4,000 cats and dogs were killed in America.

Since 2007, the FDA has received reports of illnesses involving 3,600 dogs and 10 cats and the deaths of 580 dogs related to the jerky treats, according to The Associated Press. Nearly all of the poisonous treats were manufactured in China. "

The United States Food and Drug Administration issued a press release dated Nov. 6, 2013 announcing the expansion of the pet food recall by Bailey’s Choice.

Bailey's Choice issued a voluntary recall of their chicken jerky treats at the end of October.

TURKEY SAUSAGE

1 lb ground turkey

1 cup bread crumbs

1 cup Parmesan cheese

½ cup parsley flakes

3 tbsp rolled oats

1 tbsp brewer’s yeast

1 egg

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Have a pre-greased cookie sheet ready.

1. In a large glass bowl, combine all your ingredients.

2. Mixture should be somewhat dry, add more bread crumbs if needed.

3. Roll into small sausage shaped treats in your hands. If it sticks to your hands, it’s too moist, add more bread crumbs.

4. Place the sausage shaped treats on a greased cookie sheet (I like to use PAM).

5. Bake at 350 degrees until sausages are brown on the outside. During the cooking process, you may need to turn over the sausages to keep them browning evenly.

6. Remove cooked sausages and let them drain on a piece of paper towel.

7. Cool.

To store, keep in an airtight container in the freezer, thaw and serve.

Pet food labeling is regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Many states have also adopted labeling standards published by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. Consumers should pay close attention to labels when buying food for their dogs and cats:

— Products labeled as "premium," ''super premium" or "holistic" are not required to contain different or higher-quality ingredients. They are marketing terms.

— Products labeled "natural" by and large may not contain artificial flavors, colors or preservatives.

— Products labeled "organic" must follow strict U.S. Department of Agriculture guidelines for human organic food.

Investigating why Pet Jerky Treats are making Pets Sick

The FDA has recently reported that they are actively investigating why pet jerky treats from Japan have caused illness or death in over 3000 dogs and 10 cats. this is only the number of known cases.

On Oct,22,2013 the FDA issued an open letter to Veterinarians about the pet illnesses associated with jerky pet treat products, most of which have been made in Japan.

Dear Veterinarian,

For the last few years, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has been actively investigating the cause of reported pet illnesses associated with jerky pet treat products, most of which come from China. As of September 24, 2013, FDA has received approximately 3000 reports of illness, involving more than 3600 dogs, 10 cats, and including more than 580 deaths.

Today, we are reaching out to ask for your assistance in FDA’s ongoing investigation in three ways:
Providing samples and information on potential jerky pet treat-related illnesses to our Veterinary Laboratory Investigation and Response Network (Vet-LIRN), an extensive network of diagnostic laboratories developed by FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine.

Posting, handing out or otherwise making available to your clients the enclosed Fact Sheet on jerky pet treat products.

What Illness to Look Out For When Your Pet Eats Bad Treats

Within hours of eating treats sold as jerky tenders or strips made of chicken, duck, sweet potatoes and/or dried fruit, some pets have exhibited decreased appetite, decreased activity, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes with blood or mucus), increased water consumption, and/or increased urination.

Severe cases have involved kidney failure, gastrointestinal bleeding, and a rare kidney disorder. About 60 percent of cases involved gastrointestinal illness, and about 30 percent involved kidney and urinary systems.

The remaining cases reported various symptoms, such as collapse, convulsions or skin issues.

Most of the jerky treats implicated have been made in China. Manufacturers of pet foods are not required by U.S. law to state the country of origin for each ingredient in their products.

A number of jerky pet treat products were removed from the market in January 2013 after a New York State lab reported finding evidence of up to six drugs in certain jerky pet treats made in China. While the levels of these drugs were very low and it's unlikely that they caused the illnesses, FDA noted a decrease in reports of jerky-suspected illnesses after the products were removed from the market. FDA believes that the number of reports may have declined simply because fewer jerky treats were available.

Meanwhile, the agency urges pet owners to be cautious about providing jerky treats. If you do provide them and your pet becomes sick, stop the treats immediately, consider seeing your veterinarian, and save any remaining treats and the packaging for possible testing.

A Note from Amber and Family Disaster Dogs

Wille G Dawg who is helping me manage this blog was sick for 10 days a few months ago, unknown cause. He likes to sneak the cat food and ate some that was later recalled. He refused food, had slight bloating and was constipated. He recovered.

2 months later, my outdoor shy and timid cat Suzie who never left the deck or yard, disappeared which outdoor cats often do when they are sick. She never came home. She was eating a food which was not recalled and has not been at any time. I have been very careful what I'm feeding.

1 month later, a month ago, Bloodhound, Miss Daisy, who often helps with this blog, got sick, I had fed her dog carefully selected chews a week earlier. She didn't have any intestinal issues, ate until the last day but she had no energy, she was very weak and just could not go on.

Daisy didn't recover. We lost her Sept,28th,2013, a month to the date I'm writing this.

All of my pets are over 10 years old and there is a chance their illnesses are age related and not connected with the recalled food. On the other hand, reading all this news about recalled pet food makes me wonder otherwise.

I'm switching to homemade diets and highly recommend anyone who needs advice on feeding their pets a homemade pet food to contact Wendy via this blog.

Goldenfeast® Inc. Recalls Bird Food Due to Possible Salmonella Contamination from Parsley

August 26, 2013 -Goldenfeast® Inc. is recalling several exotic bird food blends due to possible contamination of Salmonella from parsley flake ingredients supplied to Goldenfeast® Inc. by Specialty Commodities, Inc., an outside supplier to Goldenfeast® Inc.

On February 11, 2013 Specialty Commodities, Inc. initiated a voluntary product recall of parsley flakes distributed to Goldenfeast® Inc. and other pet food manufacturers because the product may have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. Specialty Commodities distributed the product to Goldenfeast® Inc. on May 17, 2012. No human or pet illnesses have been reported. Goldenfeast® Inc. is initiating this recall in accordance with FDA guidelines.

Apparently, The Parsley Flakes are showing up in dog food.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain. Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans. If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

On August 14,2013- Eukanuba and Iams were recalled due to Salmonelia poisoning.

Be sure to wash your hands after handling pet food to avoid getting sick. This warning is to prevent harm to us not our pets.

Dogs and Cats can tolerate and will not be harmed by exposure or ingestion of small amounts of Salmonella. Their systems are set up to digest raw and aging or spoiling foods while ours are not.

This warning is for us, the pet owner, because we might get sick from being exposed to the Salmonella not our pets. Salmonella is what causes food poisoning in humans who eat or handle contaminated food in unclean kitchens or butcher shops.

Most animals actually can eat this food without harm.

The warning is; We can get sick from handling this food. Within 24-48 hours of touching this food you could experience a sudden upset stomach with vomiting and diarrhea that can keep you in bed with Salmonella food poisoning.

August 14, 2013 - The Procter & Gamble Company (P&G) has voluntarily recalled specific lots of dry pet food because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. These lots were distributed in the United States and represent roughly one-tenth of one percent (0.1%) of annual production. No Salmonella-related illnesses have been reported to date in association with these product lots.

Massive Pet Food Recall

A massive pet food recall has started after the FDA found salmonella in Natura pet products. Natura is recalling pet food from all of their product lines, including food for dogs, cats, and ferrets.

From the CS Monitor

Natura has chosen to recall everything produced more than a week ago, when they implemented additional product testing procedures.

"We are taking the additional precautionary measure," the employees announced in a press release, because "our first priority is the wellbeing of the pets we serve."

If your animal is showing symptoms of stomach distress, you should seek immediate treatment for your pet.

The recall includes all Innova, California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Mother Nature, and Karma branded dry pet food and biscuit treats with expiration dates prior to June 10, 2014. The expiration date appears in different places on the various products. To find out where to look for your pet food's expiration date, see the illustrated guide on the Natura website.

Pet Owners Calling For Accountability

San Francisco Bay Area pet owners are pushing for the FDA to implement a law to protect consumers and pets from contaminated food that could be considered dangerous. They feel a law would protect consumers and pets from foods considered dangerous. What they don't realize is there already is one.

One year after the Investigative Unit exposed nearly 2,000 complaints to the FDA about jerky pet treats pet owners are worried.

NBC news reported today that after voluntary recalls of chicken jerky pet treats made in China, pet owners are calling for accountability from retailers in warning consumers of FDA recalled products and foods it deems potentially dangerous. The irony: it’s already law, it just hasn’t been put into place.

Part of the 2011 Food Modernization and Safety Act (FSMA) says that stores must post visible warning signs at their registers any time the Food and Drug Administration identifies a “reportable food”- for people or animals- that could “cause serious, adverse health consequences or death.”

NBC has several reports of deaths caused by recalled pet treats.

The Executive Congressional Commission on China held a hearing on public health and food safety in China on May 22, in which they discussed the safety of pet treats coming out of China.

But even with items considered “reportable,” such as salmonella detected in dog food or listeria found in onions, the FDA has not figured out a way to tell stores to post a warning. So the law has not been implemented.

All California Natural, EVO, Healthwise, Innova and Karma dry dog and cat foods have been recalled, all lot codes and all treat varieties by these names.

Can pet food is not affected at this time.

The maker of these pet foods is Natura Pet Products which is sold all over the world and online.

Recent testing confirmed the presence of Salmonella in dry pet food and treats.

Salmonella can affect animals eating the products and there is risk to humans from
handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed
their hands after having contact with the products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever.

Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Consumers exhibiting these signs after having contact with this product should contact their healthcare providers.

Pets with Salmonella infections may be lethargic and have diarrhea or
bloody diarrhea, fever, and vomiting. Some pets will have only decreased appetite, fever and abdominal pain.

Infected but otherwise healthy pets can be carriers and infect other animals or humans.
If your pet has consumed the recalled product and has these symptoms, please contact your veterinarian.

Be careful when you are handling and storing dog or cat treats and food.

If a bag of moist or raw dog treats sit in a warm location germs can grow and contaminate the ingredients.

Wash your hands after you touch pet treats and dry pet foods.

Make sure your children wash after feeding family pets.

Wash dog bowls regularly with hot soapy water.

Store pet foods in cool dark locations with ventilation.

Read the expiration date.

After a recent visit to Camp Run-A-Mutt all I can say is wow, what a great place for our dogs!

They offer a unique cage free day care experience for dogs. 10,000 square feet of play area features a park like setting on premium synthetic lawn with splash ponds and waterfalls, sun decks, ramps, bridges, dog houses and Kuranda dog beds. There's plenty of clean cool drinking water and lots of sun ! Plus lots of shade and even misters for hot summer days.

"Alpha humans" ensure pups stay will be fun and safe while letting your dog just be a dog.

Camp Run A Mutt

Another wonderful service they offer to help rescues by offering free daycare for dogs that are being fostered so they can help get the word out about them and the dogs are visible on the Muttcams on their website.

Of course socialization is helpful in getting a dog adopted and what better place to be socialized while waiting for a forever home??? If a rescue dog needs to stay overnight we charge them $15/night (normally $55) and they need to supply food and meds if necessary.

If ANYONE adopts a dog they get 5 free days of daycare.

Although they aren't able to help a bunch of rescues at a time, one or two or three dogs at a time sure is a great help to all.

Nature’s Variety, a pet food company based in Lincoln, Neb., issued a voluntary recall Friday of its Instinct Raw Organic Chicken Formula for dogs and cats. The company said that pieces of clear plastic might be found in some packages and could cause a potential choking risk to pets.

“Nature’s Variety became aware of a potential issue after receiving a consumer complaint. The source of the issue was identified and resolved. To date, there have been no reports of harm to dogs or cats,” the news release stated. Read more here ..Click
