It sounds a bit like Ke$ha's "Blah Blah Blah." That's how the trailer for "Just Wright," the new movie starring Queen Latifah and Common, begins. It blasts out a standard-issue pop song reassuring the audience that it won't have to think too hard--a strategy reminiscent of "Valentine's Day's" use of Black Eyed Peas in its promos. The song selection, though, isn't the most befuddling thing about the trailer. In the film, Latifah stars as a physical therapist who falls for her client, an injured franchise player for the NBA's New Jersey Nets. Yes, the New Jersey Nets--and in the movie, the team actually looks successful. Any basketball fan can tell you that the '09-10 Nets will go down as one of the worst teams in NBA history. "Just Wright" seems to have created an alternate universe where the team wins and has a franchise player. Sounds more like a fantasy film to me. The team is so embarrassingly bad, it's a wonder that Fox Searchlight is even releasing it this year. Why not wait another year ... or two ... or even three. But no. Instead the studio openly uses the Nets logo and uniforms to sell "Just Wright"--bad move. No matter what team Common's Scott McKnight plays for, it's hard to tell what "Just Wright" is aiming for. Is it a formulaic romcom or is it a basketball movie? Even with a cameo appearance in the trailer by Orland Magic superstar Dwight Howard, "Just Wright" clearly isn't a basketball movie. It looks like a formulaic romcom that happens to feature the NBA. What could separate it from the genre, though, is well-handled scenes of basketball. If director Sanaa Hamri ("Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2") can deliver sequences on par with Spike Lee's "Kobe Doin' Work," "Just Wright" might find an audience--even with that New Jersey Nets debacle. Remaking either one of these would be a serious undertaking weighed down by enough expectations to scare off the most ambitious directors and producers. That's where Robert Rodriguez steps in. Most known for his work as a writer-director and overall renaissance film man, Rodriguez has proved that he is not afraid to tackle tough projects, as his movies "El Mariachi" and "Sin City" suggest. He's a true rebel. Rodriguez, who serves as a producer on "Predators," a reboot of the franchise, introduces a sneak peak released this week. It seems as though "Predators," directed by Nimrod Antal ("Vacancy," "Armored"), makes some smart decisions, the first of which is trying to separate itself from 1987's "Predator." Yes, fingerprints from John McTiernan's original can be found all over the clips, but it's also evident that "Predators" is looking to establish itself as its own entity. Rather than put Dwayne Johnson or Karl Urban in the lead (obvious choices to replace Arnold Schwarzenegger) Antal has cast Topher Grace, Adrien Brody and Laurence Fishburne, bringing the movie out of the muscle-bound shadows of 1987. As good as the cast is, Antal is an even more perfect choice to direct. Mostly lauded for his eye for style, Antal's ability to create unnerving tension and his breakneck pacing often go overlooked. He will no doubt use all of those skills in "Predators." For fans of the original--and all of the machismo that comes with it--it seems as if the franchise is finally back on its feet. After a let-down sequel and a disastrous "Alien vs. Predator," "Predators" will be a breath of fresh air, even if it doesn't live up to the standards set by Arnold and Carl Weathers. This delightful mixture not only shows Goldfrapp’s creativity but also gives listeners an idea of what their latest album will sound like. The video focuses on a curly blond haired girl as she drives a semi truck out into the desert. Attached to the back of that truck is, you guessed it, a rocket. But not just any rocket--this one comes in shades of pink and purple, each of which fit perfectly into the desert landscape. The frightened passenger along for this ride is a person covered from head to foot in massive amounts of duct tape. It looks like a full-body cast from cartoons but with a grayish silver tone to it. Goldfrapp’s use of special effects in this video is really what makes it, from the rocket blasts to the semi-truck shots. While the video for “Rocket” is great the song itself is even better. It’s catchy without being annoying and the lead singer’s voice is perfect for the lyrics. She sings them in this kind of teasing way; it really grabs the listener and makes them want to hear more. Goldfrapp is made up of only two people but from the sound of “Rocket” you would expect a full band. If this song is setting the tone for what “Head First” is going to sound like then I can’t wait to hear it. The gray-scale video harks back to a time when people actually went to dinner and a show. Although the video as a whole for “The Mama Papa” is pretty good, the intro goes on far too long. There are 45 seconds without music plus a 30-second build up in the song--the two could have been combined to pull viewers into the action quicker. This sort of thing can make or break videos, and it is a definite fault with Plants and Animals. Storylines are good but they don’t need to take up the first quarter of the video. Meanwhile, the actual song “The Mama Papa” is good if not too repetitive. The musical part is fantastic but the lyrics could use some work. Overall though, it’s a fairly catchy song and one that should be given a listen. Plants and Animals are young--they have time to grow and decide what they want to do with their music. As of right now, it seems as if they are heading in the right direction and just need work out a few of the kinks along the way. Who knows--maybe their next single will be better.
