Most people will generally think about the climate of their travel destination, but don’t necessarily research/plan enough of the details, which can not only lead to surprises, but can also add frustration to their trip. A little bit of advance planning, research, and preparation can go a long way to ensuring a smooth trip, and can help you enjoy yourself that much more.

A good starting point is to look at the overall climate for a destination for the time of year you’re planning to travel – Ireland, for example, has a reputation for constant rain, but the east coast only sees about half of the number of rainy days as the west coast. Trinidad, on the other hand, has a rainy season running all the way from June to December. Some quick advance research on the normal climate for that location/season might help avoid surprises, and will set reasonable expectations about what you’ll find at your destination – and may even help you to choose your destination in the first place.

Once you’ve settled on a destination, you can do some initial preparation – if the climate is wet, pack a small travel umbrella and some warmer clothing (wool sweaters are ideal), and include a lightweight nylon raincoat/shell. If it’s cold or snowing, plan for wool socks, sweaters, gloves/hat/scarf, and check the average temperature to ensure your outer jacket is suited to the right temperatures – ensuring you plan and pack extra layers is also helpful, as you can always add/remove layers as the temperature changes. Warmer/tropical weather is easier, but plan to bring some of the necessities with you, as they often charge far more to tourists than what you would pay at home for items such as sunglasses, suntan lotion, hats, and towels – plan to bring a supply of high-SPF suntan lotion, a sunburn can quickly ruin a trip if you are overexposed in your first day or two (especially when travelling with children), and even consider visiting a tanning salon before departing from home, as it can help to build a base and prevent burning. As you get closer to departing, double-check the weather to make sure there aren’t any last-minute changes (such as storms, cold fronts, heat waves), and revise your preparations accordingly.

Don’t forget to take the altitude into account as well – many countries have a broad range of high and low altitude regions, so if your itinerary takes you high into the mountains or closer to sea level than the rest of the area, take that into account with your planning (even hotter climates can get much cooler as you go higher in altitude, so bring extra layers of clothing).

Some other areas that often get overlooked deal with adapting to the local climate – if you are an avid photographer, consider a protective pack/case for your camera to prevent damage if travelling to a traditionally wet or cold area. In countries with a lot of rain, be sure not to take anyone else’s umbrella by mistake, it’s considered a major ‘faux pas’. In warmer countries, especially in Europe and the Middle East, take care when dressing for the climate, as there are often more conservative dress codes which may prevent you from entering many churches and institutions (especially for women), and could also go against local customs.

Like anything else, a little advance planning can go a long way to ensuring that you have a smooth comfortable trip with no surprises. If you’re the adventurous type, you can always play things by ear and adapt once you arrive – but for most of us, eliminating some of the more common travel frustrations can help make a trip more memorable, and help us enjoy the destination.

You should be aware of the dangers and how to stay healthy.

Diseases which aren’t present in the UK such as yellow fever, malaria, rabies and dengue fever are common in some areas of the world.

Vaccinations and immunisations

Visit your GP as soon as possible to check if you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures (such as malaria tablets).

Remember, these treatments aren’t usually available as NHS prescriptions.

General travel health tips

You should also make extra preparations if you have an existing medical condition.

take out adequate Travel Insurance or you could face a huge medical bill if you fall ill and need treatment

get a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) to entitle you to free or discounted healthcare in European countries

check the health section of our country travel advice before you travel

drink plenty of water in hot climates to avoid dehydration

be safe in the sun – use a high-factor sunscreen and avoid excessive sunbathing between 11am – 3pm

find out the local emergency services numbers and the number of the local hospital

practice safe sex – take condoms with you as quality varies in different countries. HIV and Aids, and other sexually transmitted diseases can be caught worldwide.

Long-distance journeys

don’t wear tight clothing on long-distance journeys

do regular stretching exercises such as flexing and extending your ankles to avoid circulation problems

walk round at regular intervals on long flights

drink plenty of water on flights and avoid drinking too much alcohol.

Consult your doctor before long-distance travel if you:

are pregnant or have given birth in the last 6 months

have a history of blood disorders, deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism

are taking hormonal medication (including the contraceptive pill)

have cancer, heart problems or have recently had surgery.

If you have a pre-existing medical condition

tell your travel insurer about your condition

ask your doctor how the trip might affect you

check local conditions such as climate and pollution levels and consider how you might be affected

carry a doctor’s letter and a copy of any prescriptions

ensure your medication is legal in the country you are visiting – the British Embassy can advise you

learn key words and phrases in the local language for your condition, medication and emergency help

take the same precautions you normally would in the UK if you weren’t going to be at home for a while

if you suffer from a mental illness you should be aware that facilities and local attitudes to mental health problems may differ from those in the UK. Do some research before you go.

Tropical cyclones, also called typhoons and hurricanes, usually occur at predictable times of year in distinct parts of the world:

Atlantic/Caribbean – the hurricane season is normally from June – November (averages 8-15 storms per season)

Pacific/South East Asia region – the tropical cyclone season is normally from May – November (averages 15-20 storms per season)

Far East, South Pacific and Australia – the tropical cyclone and typhoon season is normally from November – April (averages 10-20 storms per season)

Northern India tropical cyclones usually occur from April – June and September – November

East Coast of Africa normally experiences tropical cyclones from November – April.

What to do if a tropical cyclone is coming

It’s difficult to accurately predict where, when and at what strength a tropical cyclone will strike, as they often veer off-course, change their tracking speed and intensify or weaken quite suddenly. It is advisable to should follow local advice which in some cases may be to leave the immediate area if a storm is heading your way.

If you are in a cyclone region during the tropical cyclone season:

regularly check or subscribe to our country travel advice

monitor local radio, TV and press

keep in touch with your travel/tour operator

register with the local British Embassy

follow local advice – and leave the area if advised

remember that airports and hotels may shut down if a hurricane approaches.

Tropical cyclones can seriously damage and disrupt a country’s infrastructure. It may take time for airports to re-open, and there may be serious shortages of accommodation, food, water and health facilities.

Our ability to help British nationals may be limited (perhaps severely) in these circumstances.

In the event of a tropical cyclone, local governments may set up emergency shelters, but these are primarily for the local population and conditions are normally basic.

When would the FCO advise against travel because of a tropical cyclone?

The FCO would only advise against travel to an area or region if it was considered that the risks of travel there were too high.

A number of factors are used to reach this decision. Our travel advice will be regularly updated with the latest information of a tropical cyclone as it passes over a populated area.

The Met Office provide us with detailed reporting on severe weather systems around the world. In June 2007 they stated that there was a 70% chance that between seven and thirteen named tropical storms or hurricanes would affect the Atlantic/Caribbean region in 2007, with ten being the most likely number. The actual number of named tropical storms or hurricanes was twelve. In June 2008 they stated that there was as a 70% chance that between ten and twenty named tropical storms or hurricanes would affect the same region in 2008, with fifteen being the most likely number.

What’s the difference between a hurricane, typhoon, or tropical cyclone?

There is no difference. Hurricanes and typhoons are regionally specific names for a severe tropical cyclone.

Wind speed is used to categorise a tropical cyclone:

less than 34 knots (39mph) – tropical depression

more than 34 knots – tropical storm and given a name

more than 64 knots (74mph) – designated either a hurricane, typhoon, severe tropical cyclone, severe cyclonic storm or tropical cyclone depending where it is in the world

the strength of hurricanes is categorised on a scale of 1 to 5 with category 1 being over 64 knots.

The effects of a Tropical Cyclone

In the Atlantic/Caribbean region hurricanes can cause massive amounts of damage and kill many people. 2005 was a record year for both the number and the force of hurricanes in this region, while 2006 was relatively quiet. There were twelve named hurricanes in 2007.

The most violent hurricanes to affect the Atlantic/Caribbean region since 2004 have all wreaked widespread havoc, caused billions of pounds in damage to infrastructure and resulted in hundreds of fatalities.

Many British holidaymakers in the region were caught up in the disasters, and some British nationals were killed and seriously injured.

In the Indian Ocean region cyclones can cause as much damage and destruction as hurricanes because of the similar fragile nature of buildings and infrastructure.

Typhoons of a similar strength to hurricanes and cyclones often cause far less destruction because of the more resilient buildings and infrastructure found in countries such as Japan and South Korea.

That’s making sales easy to find for a last-ditch summer fling. There are $24 rooms in downtown Las Vegas and $178 rates for new hotels in New York. Beach resorts from Hawaii to North Carolina are discounting. And there are still rooms at Grand Canyon park lodges.

Airfares have also dropped, especially to Florida beach resorts. Average fares to Orlando and Fort Lauderdale are down 18 percent to $222 and $208 respectively, according to Bing Travel, the new Microsoft search engine that uses the airfare tracking tools of Farecast. And a recent online search for flights from New York City, departing Thursday, Sept. 4, and returning the next Monday, turned up many round-trip fares for under $300, including Myrtle Beach, S.C., ($155) and Toronto ($287).

There’s another incentive to fly somewhere this Labor Day: impending capacity cuts could push fares up this fall. “Is Labor Day going to be the last hurrah?” asked Genevieve Shaw Brown, senior editor at Travelocity.com.

Here is a roundup of some of the better deals.

Beach Vacations

Bargains are easy to come by at traditional Labor Day beach resorts. On a tight budget? The Red Roof Inn motel chain is offering a third night free with discount code 545474 on many already discounted beach destinations. For example, three nights at the Red Roof Inn, Wilmington, N.C., near expansive Wrightsville Beach comes to just $54.44 a night, when the deal is applied at checkout, or $39.99 a night at the Red Roof in Naples, Fla.

At the high end of the hotel spectrum, the Four Seasons Lanai at Manele Bay in Hawaii is offering four nights at the price of three; nightly rates begin at $295 over the Labor Day weekend. Similar deals are being offered at two Miami hotels: the Mandarin Oriental (where rates start at $299 for a skyline view) and the Setai (about $550 a night, roughly half of what it costs in high season).

Some of the best bargains can be found in Mexico, where hotels are still recovering from a sharp downturn in travel following swine flu outbreaks last spring. Hotel rates are down 22 percent in Cancún compared with last Labor Day weekend, according to Travelocity.com, and average airfare is down 26 percent.

Keep in mind that hurricane season runs through mid-October. Consider travel insurance with hurricane coverage if you decide to snap up a deal in Mexico, Florida or other storm-prone regions.

Urban Escapes

While beaches and campgrounds are popular with Labor Day crowds, cities tend to empty out. Expedia, which is running a Labor Day Sale that includes 207 vacation packages, reports hotel rates are down between 13 and 25 percent in cities like Boston, San Francisco, Seattle and Vancouver. For example, Tourism Vancouver is listing a number of hotels with third-night-free deals including the Fairmont Waterfront from 249 Canadian dollars a night (about $222 at 1.12 Canadian dollars to the U.S. dollar).

Hotwire’s Travel-Ticker.com has also pulled together a list of bargains including $74 a night for the King George Hotel in San Francisco, a more than 50 percent cut. And the new discount hotel site Getaroom.comis offering rates from $40 in Orlando, $67 in New Orleans and $99 in Washington. If you book two nights by Aug. 31 you receive a $25 rebate.

Even in New York, not known for hotel bargains, deals abound because of falling demand and a surplus of new hotels. In fact, average room rates in the first full week of August dropped 27.6 percent compared with the same period last year, to $191.90, according to Smith Travel Research, which tracks the industry. This was the largest weekly decrease in 25 major markets the company researches.

For example, the new Ace Hotel near the Flatiron District had rooms starting at $178, in a recent search on Quikbook.com, an online hotel discounter. Gild Hall near Wall Street was $180 a night, and the Maritime Hotel in Chelsea was $225.

In addition to cheaper hotels, visitors can expect less crowding at stores, more theater seats and more open tables at hot restaurants. In fact, restaurants in New York are so desperate for business that the city extended Restaurant Week — which offers $24.07 three-course prix-fixe lunches and $35 three-course prix-fixe dinners at top-notch restaurants — for an additional five weeks through Labor Day.

Europe

Flights to Europe are not the bargain that some have hoped for, but it’s still cheaper these days. “People suffer from flight fixation,” said Ms. Shaw Brown of Travelocity. “If you look at the vacation in total and consider the value you can get from the hotel, you might be surprised what you can afford.”

Case in point: A weeklong Barcelona package on Travelocity, which includes the Expo Hotel Barcelona and round-trip airfare from New York, is $925 a person. The flight alone, however, is $609.

That rationale also works in reverse. Aer Lingus, for example, is offering five nights in Ireland, including a room at the Ritz-Carlton, Powerscourt, just south of Dublin, and round-trip airfare from New York, for $799 a person in September. The hotel alone typically starts at 200 euros ($288 at $1.45 to the euro) a night (or about 1,000 euros for five nights).

Globus, which specializes in guided group tours, is offering half off airfare on European river cruise vacations booked by Sept. 1. In a separate promotion, it is offering $100 off United and Lufthansa flights for European city vacations by Aug. 31.

Great Outdoors

It’s not too late to find a room at a national park either. Many families are already getting ready for school. Though popular parks like Yellowstone and Zion are mostly sold out for Labor Day weekend, a recent search on Xanterra.com, an online reservation site for several national parks, showed openings at the Yavapai Lodge near the South Rim of the Grand Canyon for $107 a night, and the Furnace Creek Ranch in Death Valley from $124 a night.

And in Alaska, where fall comes early, Denali Park Resorts is offering a two-night Colors of Denali package from $219 a night that includes a $50 gift card and 500 Alaska Airlines miles.

But don’t expect vacancies everywhere. All the lodges overlooking the South Rim of the Grand Canyon, including El Tovar and Bright Angel, have been sold out for weeks.

The State Department strongly encourages American citizens planning travel abroad to register their travel with the Department of State. Travel registration makes it possible to contact a traveler if necessary, whether because of a family emergency in the United States or because of a crisis in the place the traveler is visiting. Registration is a free service provided by the State Department, and is easily accomplished online at https://travelregistration.state.gov.

Note that, in accordance with the Privacy Act, the Department of State may not release information about those registered without their express written authorization.

If your family needs to reach you because of an emergency, they can pass a message to you through the Office of Overseas Citizens Services, which can be contacted from within the United States at 1-888-407-4747 (toll free), and from overseas at 202-501-4444. The Office of Overseas Citizens Services will contact the U.S. Embassy or Consulate in the country in which you are traveling in order to pass the message to you.

The State Department also advises leaving a detailed itinerary and copies of your passport biographical-data page with a friend or relative in the United States.

Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for a backpack:

Internal vs. External
Up until late 1970’s, external frame packs–which consist of an exposed, lightweight metal frame attached to a fabric pack-bag–were the only thing going. In recent years, though, packs that place the support structure of the pack inside the pack, known as internal frame packs, have boomed in popularity.

The good news about internal frame packs is that they hold the weight of your load close to your body, making it easier to maintain your balance on uneven terrain. Meanwhile, internals provide stiffness and support, but they are not completely rigid, which makes them more flexible when you’re doing active sports. With the added flexibility comes a high degree of compressibility, meaning you can use the pack’s compression straps to cinch down your load and keep items from shifting and throwing you off balance. Internals also sport slimmer shapes that allow for more arm movement in all directions–another big plus for off-trail bushwhackers, skiers and climbers. Last but not least, internal frame packs offer a greater range of adjustability in the shoulder harness and hip-belt than external frame packs.

There are some negatives for internals. First, once packed, it can be difficult to grab needed items out of them quickly. And because internal frame packs consolidate the load into a single, body-hugging unit, proper packing is very important. To distribute the weight properly, you should pack your heaviest items close to your back and in the middle portion of the pack-bag. Plan on getting a sweaty back with an internal, too, given the fact that they are pressed right against you. Finally, internal frame packs are priced higher than external models.

External frame packs are very good at focusing the weight of a load directly to the right place: your load-loving hips. While internals, when properly packed, do this effectively, too, you can always rest assured that an external will distribute the load evenly, no matter how unevenly packed it may be. Externals also offer easy access to your gear via multiple, easily-accessible compartments. Plus, because externals don’t situate the load directly against your back, you’ll enjoy far more air flow. Finally, if you’re on a budget, or you’re buying for a growing child, externals are more affordable.

If you plan on hiking on easy to moderate trails and you don’t need a lot of body movement, you’ll probably be fine with an external. But because externals are so rigid and inflexible, challenging trails or any kind of off-trail pursuit can become painful and frustrating. Also know that your balance is far more compromised with an external frame pack during activities like stream crossings and hops through talus fields.

Packs for Shorter Trips
In addition to backpacks designed for overnight trips, rucksacks are great for day-trips, warm-weather one-nighters, single-day ski trips, or fast alpine assaults. Some rucksacks blur the line between backpack and rucksack with integrated internal supports and sophisticated hip belts and shoulder harnesses. Choose a pack in this category based on your intended use. Short day hikers don’t need an internal frame, while climbers and skiers with heavier loads likely do.

Sizes and Capacities
Packs in the 3,000 cubic inches and lower category are good for day hikes or overnighters in warm weather with minimal gear. Packs in the 3,000 to 4,000 cubic inch range are good for one- or two-night trips in colder weather. If you’re going to be out for up to three days, look for a pack in the sub-4,000 cubic inch range. Choose a pack with 5,000-6,000 cubic inches for week-long outings. And finally, for trips lasting a week or more, you’ll need something in the 6,000-plus cubic inch category. Keep in mind, though, that bigger packs weigh more, and since every ounce counts, you’ll want to choose a pack that offers just enough space for your outings and no more.

One of the most magnificent natural phenomena, lightning is often believed to be an infrequent occurrence.

In actuality, lightning hits the earth an estimated 100 times per second on average, or 8.6 million times a day.

It is estimated that the U.S. alone receives as many as 20 million cloud-to-ground lightning strikes per year from perhaps 100,000 thunderstorms.

What are some of the myths about lightning?

Lightning is a spark that can reach over 5 miles in length, attain a temperature of approximately 50,000 degrees Fahrenheit, and contain over 100 million electrical volts.

According to Stu Ostro, a Senior Weather Specialist at The Weather Channel, cloud-to-ground lightning is usually caused when a negative charge at the base of a cloud is attracted to the positive charge at the earth’s surface; a powerful surge of electricity descends to the ground carrying a current made up of millions of electrons. This is answered by a return stroke, which appears to us as the bright flash of cloud-to-ground lightning.
