title="Knitting Classes at WEBS" href="http://www.yarn.com/webs-classes-events-classes-knitting/" target="_blank">class at WEBS. I don’t think I’ll ever forget it as it is super simple and it yields great results.

If you’ve ever changed colors while knitting ribbing, you’ve no doubt noticed the unfortunate thing that happens in the purl columns. The purl bumps of one color end up showing through in the fabric of the other color, and it creates an unfortunate zig-zagging line. The good news is that there is an easy fix for this.

When you change colors in ribbing simply knit all the stitches for the first round; do not purl. After the first round you can go back to your rib pattern. The result is a very clean line between the two colors. And don’t worry… You won’t even notice that round of knit stitches. They blend in completely.

You can use this technique whether you are working flat or in the round. There are just a few things to take into consideration. The first is that your work must have a wrong side, since that row/round of knit stitches will appear as a garter ridge on the wrong side. As a result, this technique shouldn’t be used on reversible patterns.

The second is that this technique works best on stripes made up of more than two rows/rounds. If the stripe is only two rows then you are basically going back and forth between a knit row and a rib row, and that can affect the integrity of your ribbing.

If your pattern is appropriate for this technique then I suggest you try it. I think you will find, as I did, that it is a simple trick that makes a big difference.

- Liz

Join Our Latest KAL!

KAL & CAL

Caeles

Valley Yarns Goshen

If you’ve followed along on our podcast, Ready, Set, Knit, you know that we’ve featured many knitalongs and crochetalongs, and now it’s time for another. href="http://www.twistcollective.com/2012/spring/magazinepage_01.php">Twist Collective was release, we loved Caeles. This tank is a great choice for spring and summer, and it is sized 29¾” to 57 ¾”! Even better, it is knit in Valley Yarns Goshen, and Goshen happens to be part of our Anniversary Sale. Thanks to the sale price, the yarn cost for the project will be $19.53-$33.48 – a price that’s hard to beat.

I’m a big fan of Goshen. I knit a shrug out of it nearly four years ago and I still wear it, especially in the spring and summer. It’s great over a dress or a tank. I also love the color palette. The modal and silk add a touch of sheen and it is incredibly soft.

You’ll want to choose your size (the pattern recommends negative ease, so slightly smaller than your actual measurement), pick your color, and order the yarn and pattern (pattern is a download from Twist Collective). Now, we need to knit a gauge swatch. The pattern calls for a size 7 needle and 18 stitches and 23 rows for four inches. Make sure you wash and block your swatch before measuring. Mine loosened up a bit, so even though I thought I would have to go up a needle size, once I washed it, my gauge was fine. If you don’t get gauge, change your needle size and try again.

Next week, we’ll talk about casting on and working short rows.

We hope that you’ll join us!

Eucalan Giveaway Winners

Contests

Eucalan

Hi Everyone! With a gauge of 5 stitches to the inch you can use it for worsted weight patterns, as well as some DK weight patterns. I have some Ultra Alpaca stashed for a crocheted sweater that I’ve had my eye on for awhile, and now that it’s on sale I may just have to buy some more to make a knit sweater too. > Liz A.

<a
