Today I’ve updated FBMessenger (Facebook Messenger for Linux) with the latest GIT code. There aren’t any major changes and only a bug fix is worth mentioning: sometimes the application would segfault on exit, other times the app would continue to run in the background even though it was closed, using 100% cpu - this should now be fixed.

Also, starting today, FBMessenger is also available for Ubuntu 13.10 Saucy Salamander.

Oracle Java 7 Update 21 (7u21) And Java 6 Update 45 (6u45) Available In The WebUpd8 JDK PPA

Oracle has released Java 7 Update 21 and Java 6 Update 45. Both JDK versions have been updated in the WebUpd8 Java PPA.

Oracle JDK 7u21 changes:

Blacklisted Jars and Certificates: Oracle now manages a certificate and jar blacklist repository. This data is updated on client computers daily on the first execution of a Java applet or web start application
Changes to Java Control Panel’s Security Settings: In this release, low and custom settings are removed from the Java Control Panel(JCP)’s Security Slider
Changes to Security Dialogs: As of JDK 7u21, JavaScript code that calls code within a privileged applet is treated as mixed code and warning dialogs are raised if the signed JAR files are not tagged with the Trusted-Library attribute
Changes to RMI: From this release, the RMI property java.rmi.server.useCodebaseOnly is set to true by default. In previous releases the default value was false
Server JRE: A new Server JRE package, with tools commonly required for server deployments but without the Java plug-in, auto-update or installer found in the regular JRE package, is available starting from this release
Fixes for security vulnerabilities

Oracle JDK 6u45 changes:

TextAdept 6.5 Available In The Main WebUpd8 PPA

TextAdept 6.5 is now available in the main WebUpd8 PPA. Changes:

Theme Updates: Gnomish Gray, Gnome Cupertino

Gnomish Gray (GTK2/3/GNOME Shell theme) and Gnome Cupertino (GTK2/3 theme) themes have been updated today.

Gnomish Gray changelog:

The latest Gnomish Grey theme is only available for Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail because it depends on GTK 3.6.4 (apparently some stuff has changed since previous GTK 3.6.x versions used in Ubuntu 12.10)

Gnome Cupertino is available for both Ubuntu 12.10 and 13.04.

Both themes are available in the WebUpd8 Themes Repository.

Updates: Oracle Java 7 Update 17 (JDK 7u17) and Java 6 Update 43 (JDK 6u43)

Oracle has released Java 7 Update 17 (JDK 7u17) which comes with fixes for security vulnerabilities. Even though Oracle has said that Java 6 will no longer be updated, they’ve also released Java 6 Update 43 (JDK 6u43) which, just like JDK7, comes with important security fixes.

With this release, the PPA package code has been updated with a patch from Eugene San for better code structure. Also, Launchpad doesn’t allow building packages for Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat any more, so there will be no more updates for it.

Reminder: The Oracle license no longer allows Java distribution, so the packages in our PPA don’t contain any actual Java code. Instead, the packages use a script (like the one used for flashplugin-installer) that automatically downloads Java and does everything required to set it up, automatically.

I’ve backported the latest Android Tools 4.2.2 from Ubuntu Raring to Ubuntu Quantal and Precise. The new version should support the latest Android 4.2.2.

We also build Raring packages in our PPA because we’ve modified Android Tools to also install 51-android.rules.

I’ve updated the libmtp package available in the Backports WebUpd8 PPA for Ubuntu Quantal and Precise with the latest version backported from Raring (version: 1.1.5-42-g6e96316).

Audacious 3.3.4 Available in PPA

Audacious 3.3.4 is the last maintenance release for the 3.3.x branch and contains the following bug fixes:

Fix Wavpack plugin alerts on missing .wvc files for lossless wavpack files
Fix compiling Audacious against against libcdio-0.90
Handle empty lines in m3u parser
AOSD plug-in out-of-bounds array access with old Audacious config values

With this release, I’ve also uploaded Ubuntu Raring builds because the audacious-plugins package in Ubuntu 13.04 is currently built without ffaudio support so using it, you won’t be able to play wma or wav files. Playing these files does work using the packages in our PPA.

Oracle Java JDK 6/7/8 Installer Now Supports Local Install

I’ve updated all three Oracle Java packages: 6, 7 and 8 to support local install, thanks to Sergio Talens-Oliag’s help.

That means that you can now copy the Java archive into /var/cache/oracle-jdk7-installer (replace jdk7 with jdk6 or jdk8 for Java 6 or 8) and install it without an Internet connection, useful for installing Oracle Java on multiple machines or on machines not connected to the Internet.

Android Tools Now With 51-android.rules

I’ve tweaked the Android Tools package (which provides adb, fastboot) to install 51-android.rules Udev rules, as suggested by WebUpd8 reader richiedaze. This file is added when installing adb from our PPA and is not available in the official Android Tools package from the Ubuntu repositories.
