I have been watching this since yesterday right after I signed up a hosting account with them! So I waited patiently and wanted to know what is going on there. After more than 24 hours (which is now), the down time continues! I think that is too long for a commercial hosting company. I do not know whether their customers are affected. So please anyone do feedback on this if you find your site hosted with InMotion Hosting is down too. (My account is not activated yet due to some technical issues so I cannot tell if my account is down!)

I just want to know what is going on.

Thank you for your email. Is it our website, inmotionhosting.com you are referring to? If so, you may have tried to visit while we moved the site to a new server. We make these changes overnight (U.S. time, since most of our customers are here). The site may have been down for a few minutes during that period.

Hmm..I’m being reserved in judging anything now as I do trust InMotion Hosting. Hopefully they will handle the issue right.

What is a domain name and why do I need one?

Domain name is the name of a web site, or the address of a website. Let’s illustrate that you are buying a house, you will need an address so that visitors can manage to locate your house. Same thing to your website, when you host your website, you will need an address (domain name) so that it is reachable by visitors.

But why is it necessary to get a domain name while I just want to buy a web hosting?

Logical thinking, whoever is buying a web hosting wants to host a website, and every website needs a domain name. So sooner or later, you will need a domain name. Therefore, web hosting providers have gone 1 step further to provide extra service to you, by helping you to register the domain name. And because of every domain name is unique, web hosting providers use domain name to organize their customer database.

How do I choose a domain name?

I was talking to InMotion Live Chat the other day on this matter. In their hosting feature pages, there is an item by the name “FREE New Domain or FREE Transfer”. Well, we all understand what Free Domain is, but what a FREE Transfer is? So this is what the Live Chat told me:-

If you already have an existing domain, you can transfer it to us (InMotion Hosting) for free and avoid having to pay renewal costs for as long as you host with us.

InMotion actually pays for your current domain if you switch hosting! Honestly this is the first time I’ve heard of this kind of policy. I can actually avoid paying my current domain fee by hosting with InMotion! As a reference for you, other web hosts will offer free domain but in the case you are transferring an existing domain, the web host will not mention a word anymore on the free domain. You will need to renew it on your own.

Well, does their free domain policy make InMotion a deal? For me, it is definitely a tempting deal! (I even am, still am thinking to switch hosting this website of mine to them because of that)    Update: I have switched to InMotion Hosting already!! Join me at InMotion!

Yes Lunarpages sucks!

If you are here to check out Lunarpages, you better read through this post and think carefully again!

I am currently still a customer of Lunarpages, who has been hosting more than 3 web sites with them for more than 4 years. And I have started reviewing web host providers since 2 years ago. Thus I’m quite confident that my experience does help you a little.

Lunarpages was indeed one of the biggest hosts in the world. They offered a big variety of hosting plans and their performance was too good to ignore. That was the old time. I do not know whether they are now ignorant or arrogant that they are no longer a good host even though they are still as big as last time.

I used to recommend Lunarpages but not anymore now!

What causes the change in my mind is mostly because of their sudden price change. They have quietly changed their price structure without notifying their customer and affiliate (me in this case). They used to charge $4.95/month for their basic plan for 12 months term. But now in order to get the $4.95 deal, you need to subscribe to Lunarpages for at least 60 months, which translates into 5 years! And for the 12 months term, they are charging $8.95/month.

There is nothing wrong with the high price but what goes unreasonable is Lunarpages does NOT have the quality of a high priced host!

For instance, Lunarpages customer support sucks!

If you are particular enough, you will notice that Lunarpages does not have 24/7 support. Their email, telephone and live chat support is only available during office hour. This is ridiculous! With the high price you are going to pay – $8.95/month you are not getting 24/7 support! If you are an international customer, you are going to wait for at least 12 hours for a reply, provided they reply on time and you are staying awake the whole night. Otherwise, you can only respond to their message the other day and by that time the support has gone offline already. Imagine the seriousness when you are experiencing emergency with your website.

Yes Lunarpages fails big!

To strengthen my points here, you can always google “Lunarpages sucks” and “Lunarpages complaints” to see how their customer supports have failed others. There are too many complaining voices if you look carefully into it. To me, I really do not recommend Lunarpages.

So if you are thinking of Lunarpages, think again. There are in fact many better web hosts than them. What you need is time to do some researches. Here is my advice, go with Hostgator if you are looking for business hosting and go with FatCow if you are looking for blog hosting or cheap hosting solution.
