Our office in Manila, lets me use whatever Operating System (OS) I prefer to use. So since I am not comfortable with working on the Microsoft Windows, I asks my supervisor if I can use Linux/Ubuntu as my workstation computer system. Luckily, he permits me to do so, and since I’ve got my own original copy of the Ubuntu 9.04 (Jaunty Jackalope) Live CD, I brought it to the office the following day.

So after I have installed Jaunty on my workstation, definitely, I need to do a lot of updates, like typing into the terminal the commands such as

$ sudo apt-get updates
and
$ sudo apt-get upgrade
, I noticed that the progress is very slow. So I started to investigate, then I found out / realized that our internet connection is directly connected to the United States lines. And so Jaunty automatically fetches all of the needed files for updates from the US’s servers instead of getting them from the Philippine repositories which is more nearer than the first, and to think that we are miles away from the USA.

So that’s what I can share with you guys as of the moment, see more updates here later.

Features and Capabilities. Several Linux distributions are built upon the powerful Debian distribution, with its various software packages. However, Ubuntu is far more cutting edge than other distributions as it very quickly adopts newer enhancements. Ubuntu also makes the most of the GNOME interface. It has a very appealing graphical user interface. The desktop is eye-catching and very organized. Ubuntu is also very simple to use because of its awry similarity to Windows Vista. Ubuntu is capable of doing many of the same things that Windows Vista is able to do. These capabilities include word processing, spreadsheet, calculating, video editing, and many more.

Security. Another reason why Ubuntu is the superlative Linux distribution is because of its security. Ubuntu has several security features that make it one of the most reliable operating systems not only based on UNIX, but also out of all other operating systems including Windows Vista and Mac OS X. Like other Linux operating systems, Ubuntu uses a different source code. Because of this different code, it is difficult to write viruses and malware for Ubuntu.

Social networking Web sites like MySpace, Facebook, Twitter, and Windows Live Spaces are services people can use to connect with others to share information like photos, videos, and personal messages.

As the popularity of these social sites grows, so do the risks of using them. Hackers, spammers, virus writers, identity thieves, and other criminals follow the traffic.

Read these tips to help protect yourself when you use social networks.

Use caution when you click links that you receive in messages from your friends on your social Web site. Treat links in messages on these sites as you would links in e-mail messages.

Know what you’ve posted about yourself. A common way that hackers break into financial or other accounts is by clicking the “Forgot your password?” link on the account login page. To break into your account, they search for the answers to your security questions, such as your birthday, home town, high school class, father’s middle name, on your social networking site. If the site allows, make up your own password questions, and don’t draw them from material anyone could find with a quick search.

Don’t trust that a message is really from who it says it’s from. Hackers can break into accounts and send messages that look like they’re from your friends, but aren’t. If you suspect that a message is fraudulent, use an alternate method to contact your friend to find out. This includes invitations to join new social networks.

To avoid giving away e-mail addresses of your friends, do not allow social networking services to scan your e-mail address book. When you join a new social network, you might receive an offer to enter your e-mail address and password to find out if your contacts are on the network. The site might use this information to send e-mail messages to everyone in your contact list or even everyone you’ve ever sent an e-mail message to with that e-mail address. Social networking sites should explain that they’re going to do this, but some do not.

Type the address of your social networking site directly into your browser or use your personal bookmarks. If you click a link to your site through e-mail or another Web site, you might be entering your account name and password into a fake site where your personal information could be stolen.

Be selective about who you accept as a friend on a social network. Identity thieves might create fake profiles in order to get information from you.

Choose your social network carefully. Evaluate the site that you plan to use and make sure you understand the privacy policy. Find out if the site monitors content that people post. You will be providing personal information to this Web site, so use the same criteria that you would to select a site where you enter your credit card.

Assume that everything you put on a social networking site is permanent. Even if you can delete your account, anyone on the Internet can easily print photos or text or save images and videos to a computer.

Be careful about installing extras on your site. Many social networking sites allow you to download third-party applications that let you do more with your personal page. Criminals sometimes use these applications to steal your personal information. To download and use third-party applications safely, take the same safety precautions that you take with any other program or file you download from the Web. For more information.

Think twice before you use social networking sites at work. For more information.

Talk to your kids about social networking. If you’re a parent of children who use social networking sites.

We all are looking for greener pastures, maybe different reasons but one thing is for sure, an additional or higher source of income. Cost of living in everywhere is not a joke in everyone of us. And that is also my reason for going to Manila and at the same time to fulfill my responsibility for my growing family.

But I was wrong thinking that looking for a job in Manila is as easy as 123 or ABC, or whatever easy way to land to a job here. The worst thing you could ever meet here is not really about your skills, you already have it and you are confident about it, but rather the discrimination for most but not all.

If you came from the province, you are least priority to have job here. But there are always an exception to the rule, and I am very thankful for those who gave me the chance to prove myself and has seen my potential in helping them in their business.

In my years of using PHP as one my web development programming tools, I found one framework that provides not only ease in coding but with a lot of things and features to offer. Today, I would like to share my experience in using date in different prospective. Usually, we are only using date() in php to present date formats, but what if you want to select from the database a format like “month/day” considering that your time records in the table are in the UNIX time format, the one that looks like this one: “1252006447″, how would you choose dates that has “month/day” or “m/d”? For sure, using php date() function will bring you an error. But using the MySQL’s command on date formatting will save the day, as what it does for me.

Considering “datetime” field in your table consists of your UNIX time. And the variable “$mydateformat” is consisting of “09/29″ values, %c is MySQL’s “month”, while “%e” is for the “day”, then let us do the coding using CodeIgniter:

$this->db->where("FROM_UNIXTIME('datetime','%c/%e')","FROM_UNIXTIME($mydateformat,'%c/%e')");
$this->db->get("timetable");

So that is it. Happy codings!

Intranet

Popular in the mid-90s, the term “intranet” referred to a private network running the Internet Protocol and other Internet standards such as the Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP). It was also used to describe an internal Web site that was hosted behind a firewall and was accessible only to employees. Today, every private network runs IP. So you can just use the term virtual private network or VPN to describe a private IP-based network.

Extranet

An “extranet” referred to private network connections based on Internet standards such as IP and HTTP that extended outside an organization, such as between business partners. Extranets often replaced point-to-point electronic data interchange (EDI) connections that used standards such as X12. Today, companies provide suppliers, resellers and other members of their supply chain with access to their VPNs.

Web Surfing

When is the last time you heard someone talk about surfing the Web? You know the term is out of date when your kids don’t know what it means. To teens and tweens, the Internet and the World Wide Web are one and the same thing. So it’s better to use the term “browsing” the Web if you want to be understood.

Push Technology

The debate over the merits of “push” versus “pull” technology came to a head in 1996 with the release of the PointCast Network, a Web service that sent a steady stream of news to subscribers. However, PointCast and other push technology services required too much network bandwidth. Eventually, push technology evolved into RSS feeds, which remain the preferred method for publishing information to subscribers of the Internet. RSS stands for Really Simple Syndication.

Application Service Provider (ASP)

During this decade, the term “Application Service Provider” evolved into “Software-as-a-Service.” Both terms refer to a vendor hosting a software application and providing access to it over the Web. Customers buy the software on a subscription basis, rather than having to own and operate it themselves. ASP was a hot term prior to the dot-com bust. Then it was replaced by “SaaS.” Now it’s cool to talk about “cloud computing.”

Personal Digital Assistant (PDA)

Coined by former Apple CEO John Sculley back in 1992 when he unveiled the Apple Newton, the term “personal digital assistant” referred to a handheld computer. PDA was still in use in 1996, when the Palm Pilot was the hottest handheld in corporate America. Today, the preferred generic term for a handheld like a Blackberry or an iPhone is a “smartphone”.

Internet Telephony

You need to purge the term “Internet telephony” from your vocabulary and switch to VoIP, for Voice over IP. Even the term VoIP is getting old-fashioned because pretty soon all telephone calls will be routed over the Internet rather than the Public Switched Telephone Network. It’s probably time to stop referring to the PSTN, too, because it is headed for the history books as all voice, data and video traffic is carried on the Internet.

Weblog

A blog is a shortened version of “Weblog,” a term that emerged in the late 1990s to describe commentary that an individual publishes online. It spawned many words still in use such as “blogger” and “blogosphere.” Nowadays, few people have time to blog so they are “microblogging,” which is another word that’s heading out the door as people turn Twitter into a generic term for blasting out 140-character observations or opinions.

Thin Client

You have to give Larry Ellison credit for seeing many of the flaws in the client/server computing architecture and for popularizing the term “thin client” to refer to Oracle’s alternative terminal-like approach. In 1993, Ellison was touting thin clients as a way for large organizations to improve network security and manageability. Although thin clients never replaced PCs, the concept is similar to “virtual desktops” that are gaining popularity today as a way of supporting mobile workers.

RBOC

In 1984, the U.S. government forced AT&T to split up into seven Regional Bell Operating Companies [RBOCs] also known as Baby Bells. Customers bought local service from RBOCs and long-distance service from carriers such as AT&T. Telecom industry mergers over the last 15 years have formed integrated local- and long-distance carriers such as AT&T, Verizon and Qwest. This makes not only the term RBOC obsolete, but also the terms ILEC for Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier [i.e., GTE] and CLEC for Competitive Local Exchange Carrier [i.e., MFS].

Long-Distance Call

Thanks to flat-rate calling plans available from carriers for at least five years, nobody needs to distinguish between local and long-distance calls anymore. Similarly, you don’t need to distinguish between terrestrial and wireless calls because so many people use only wireless services. Like pay phones, long-distance calls — and their premium prices — are relics of a past without national and unlimited calling plans.

World Wide Web

Nobody talks about the “World Wide Web” anymore, or the “Information Superhighway,” for that matter. It’s just the Internet. It’s a distinction that Steve Czaban, the popular Fox Sports Radio talk show host, likes to mock when he refers to the “Worldwide Interweb.” Nothing dates you more than pulling out one of those old-fashioned ways of referring to the Internet such as “infobahn” or “electronic highway.”

Since thee are a lot of projects that needs to show their location on the Internet such as clinics, stores, market stall and a lot more reasons for anyone to use map, google made a tool for the convenience of web developer to make it possible for this to happen.

Below are my snipet on how to place a google map fully configured to run on my site.

And the following codes are responsible to run the google map for me, by default, there is no function on how to get GLatLng from google map documentation, so I went and reearched on this and make a code for me to attain my google map flexible. The following codes are fully optimized to bring the most out of the map you wanted. Whatever map attributes and properties that you can see on google map search is also found here.

var geocoder;
var map;
function load(){
var address=jQuery("#address").val()+jQuery("#city").val()+jQuery("#provinces").selectedValues();
map = new GMap2(document.getElementById("map"));
geocoder = new GClientGeocoder();
geocoder.getLocations(address, addToMap);
}
function addToMap(response){
place = response.Placemark[0];
point = new GLatLng(place.Point.coordinates[1],
place.Point.coordinates[0]);
map.setCenter(point, 10);
marker = new GMarker(point);
map.addOverlay(marker);
marker.openInfoWindowHtml(place.address);
var customUI = map.getDefaultUI();
customUI.controls.scalecontrol = false;
map.setUI(customUI);
map.addControl(new GLargeMapControl3D());
var mapControl = new GMapTypeControl();
map.addControl(mapControl);
}

In commemoration to Ninoy Aquino’s death anniversary, I have found this speech which is supposedly to be delivered by the late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, and it runs like this:

I have returned on my free will to join the ranks of those struggling to restore our rights and freedoms through nonviolence.

I seek no confrontation. I only pray and will strive for a genuine national reconciliation founded on justice.

I am prepared for the worst, and have decided against the advice of my mother, my spiritual adviser, many of my tested friends and a few of my most valued political mentors.

A death sentence awaits me. Two more subversion charges, both calling for death penalties, have been filed since I left three years ago and are now pending with the courts.

I could have opted to seek political asylum in America, but I feel it is my duty, as it is the duty of every Filipino, to suffer with his people especially in time of crisis.

I never sought nor have I been given assurances or promise of leniency by the regime. I return voluntarily armed only with a clear conscience and fortified in the faith that in the end justice will emerge triumphant.

According to Gandhi, the WILLING sacrifice of the innocent is the most powerful answer to insolent tyranny that has yet been conceived by God and man.

Three years ago when I left for an emergency heart bypass operation, I hoped and prayed that the rights and freedoms of our people would soon be restored, that living conditions would improve and that blood-letting would stop.

Rather than move forward, we have moved backward. The killings have increased, the economy has taken a turn for the worse and the human rights situation has deteriorated.

During the martial law period, the Supreme Court heard petitions for Habeas Corpus. It is most ironic, after martial law has allegedly been lifted, that the Supreme Court last April ruled it can no longer entertain petitions for Habeas Corpus for persons detained under a Presidential Commitment Order, which covers all so-called national security cases and which under present circumstances can cover almost anything.

The country is far advanced in her times of trouble. Economic, social and political problems bedevil the Filipino. These problems may be surmounted if we are united. But we can be united only if all the rights and freedoms enjoyed before September 21, 1972 are fully restored.

The Filipino asks for nothing more, but will surely accept nothing less, than all the rights and freedoms guaranteed by the 1935 Constitution — the most sacred legacies from the Founding Fathers.

Yes, the Filipino is patient, but there is a limit to his patience. Must we wait until that patience snaps?

The nation-wide rebellion is escalating and threatens to explode into a bloody revolution. There is a growing cadre of young Filipinos who have finally come to realize that freedom is never granted, it is taken. Must we relive the agonies and the blood-letting of the past that brought forth our Republic or can we sit down as brothers and sisters and discuss our differences with reason and goodwill?

I have often wondered how many disputes could have been settled easily had the disputants only dared to define their terms.

So as to leave no room for misunderstanding, I shall define my terms:

1. Six years ago, I was sentenced to die before a firing squad by a Military Tribunal whose jurisdiction I steadfastly refused to recognize. It is now time for the regime to decide. Order my IMMEDIATE EXECUTION OR SET ME FREE.

I was sentenced to die for allegedly being the leading communist leader. I am not a communist, never was and never will be.

2. National reconciliation and unity can be achieved but only with justice, including justice for our Muslim and Ifugao brothers. There can be no deal with a Dictator. No compromise with Dictatorship.

3. In a revolution there can really be no victors, only victims. We do not have to destroy in order to build.

4. Subversion stems from economic, social and political causes and will not be solved by purely military solutions; it can be curbed not with ever increasing repression but with a more equitable distribution of wealth, more democracy and more freedom, and

5. For the economy to get going once again, the workingman must be given his just and rightful share of his labor, and to the owners and managers must be restored the hope where there is so much uncertainty if not despair.

On one of the long corridors of Harvard University are carved in granite the words of Archibald Macleish:

“How shall freedom be defended? By arms when it is attacked by arms; by truth when it is attacked by lies; by democratic faith when it is attacked by authoritarian dogma. Always, and in the final act, by determination and faith.”

I return from exile and to an uncertain future with only determination and faith to offer — faith in our people and faith in God.

What a wonderful speech for nation and for the Filipino people, how I wish we could have another hero like him again.
