Let’s get two things out of the way. First, I realize it’s late into January 2013 and, thus, a compilation regarding music from 2012 seems a bit behind schedule. This is undebatable. Secondly, it’s dishonest, disingenuous and distasteful to call this a ‘Best Of’ as I have in years past. There’s just far too much music coming out of our fair region to be able to put an entire year’s worth of it into a single, listenable, stream. With that in mind, we’re calling this a ’2012 Retrospective’ – there’s some serious oversights and questionable choices but it represents a portion of the last year. That’s all we’re going for here.

Excuses and preambles aside, I think it’s a fine hour and a half listen. My apologies to all the bands that were left out (JEFF, Reid Magette, Richie, Turbo Fruits, Wild Cub, Umbrella Tree, Ultras S/C, get better, Anchor Thieves, Calicocat, Century Club, Chancellor Warhol, Cherub, Conestyle, Mom&Dad, Shaky Voices, Tower Defense, etc. etc.) but I think you’ll find those that were included to be a fair representation of the diversity of Nashville.

2013 and beyond is only going to get crazier in terms of amount of content. This is a great problem to have.

After immersing myself in that Partytown Hospital record I decided to browse around Bandcamp and find some other eclectic Nashville Christmas music. One thing is for sure, Nashville has absolutely no shortage of great musical offerings well outside the Music Row realm. Granted, ole WOTT didn’t have quite as many actual podcasts as there were months in the year but I’d like to say we covered a good deal of the highlights from the last twelve months. But how do you boil down an entire year of releases into one comprehensive package? Unfortunately, you can’t.

The likes of The Ettes, Sugar Sk*_*lls, Kyle Andrews, Heypenny, By Lightning, Southern and many others all had superbly quality releases this year that everyone should spend time with. They are not, however, included in this mix. Being entirely comprehensive just isn’t possible. Their exclusion is not derived from a lack of enjoyment.

Other bands exist outside the scope of what We Own This Town is trying to expose. While I love The Black Keys as much as the next person, they don’t exactly need our help getting their name out there. Or someone like Jonny Corndawg, who put out a phenomenal record with Down on the Bikini Line, doesn’t actually live here anymore; so is ineligible.

Long story short, I hate that I was unable to include everything great from the last year. I am endlessly proud of the diversity of music that Nashville creates and wish there was a way for everyone to hear everything great; its just not practical. Despite that, I’ve compiled an hour and half of some of the most enjoyable tunes, to me, officially released in 2011 in these United States. Please enjoy.

I’ll be honest; I know next to nothing about the hip-hop scene in Nashville. So, when it struck me that it would be interesting to compile a podcast of some of the more forward thinking acts coming out of our area I really had no idea where to start. Fortunately, I knew Sean L. Maloney would. I hit him up one night with the request to put together a half hour of interesting songs and he turned it around in a days time. The end result is a blend of traditional hip-hop, soul, some R&B, beats and a good deal of great.

Since the December release of the podcast was devoted to wrapping up the year a few releases from the tail of our prior Earthly rotation were skipped over; an issue that I’ve tackled on this edition. I am happy to present the fortieth edition of the We Own This Town podcast and, consequently, the Best of 2010 yearly summary release. Putting together any Best Of list is often an insurmountable task but when paired with the avalanche of good music coming out of a relatively small area.. well, it becomes markedly more difficult. With that in mind, there are a few ground rules to make it easier:

• No Music From Future Releases.
  So, the new music that’s trickled out from the likes of JEFF, Hotpipes, James Wallace, PUJOL, Caitlin Rose, etc. are ineligible until they’re official out there in their full form.
• Unfamiliarity Exempts Inclusion.
  With so much good music out there I just can’t simply hear it all; despite if I hear that it is absolutely fantastic. So, bands like KORT, Casa Castile, Swing States, Shark Week, William Tyler, etc. are exempt because I simply have not heard enough to make an informed call.
• Not Everything Makes the Cut.
  A Best Of podcast that included everything that caught my ear would be far too long for practicality. Bands like Ocelots, Makeup and Vanity Set, Non-Commissioned Officers, Grayces, Uncle Skeleton, Super Bowl Rocket Ship, etc. are not excluded because they weren’t worthy, there just isn’t enough room. They should still be looked into.

But enough with the jibber jabber – my rationalization is a moot point now. Please download the podcast, enjoy and let me know in the comments what feels like a egregious error in omission.

The gap between podcasts seems to be widening every so slightly. This can be circumvented by having you, the reader, send in music to check out. Of course, that statement assumes that anyone is actually reading this. Our stats are grim. Regardless, if you encounter a local band worth hearing – email us.. we’d love to feature them.

That being said, this edition of the podcast features a nice varied gamut of styles stumbled upon in the interim since the last release. Picking a list of top releases for the year is not an easy task. 2009 was good to the Nashville music scene and there was a load to sort through. There was no way to boil down an entire year of music into the standard 30 minute podcast format so this one is super long and attempts to be all inclusive. For awhile there I thought Nashville might be experiencing a drought of great new music. The podcasts were getting tougher to put together and I was worried the well may have run dry. Sometimes it feels good to be so wrong. This edition of the podcast has such a nice wide variety of songs that it’s hard to believe I was ever worried! From the debut of a brand new Glossary track from their forthcoming Feral Fire record to brand new rock goodness from Eureka Gold to worthwhile experimental electronic sounds courtesy of Square People there is a little something for everybody. The very first We Own This Town podcast was kicked off by Ole Mossy Face and it only makes sense that the 25th installment of the podcast should be devoted to the Trey Deuce Club. While, musically, it’s a bit heavier leaning on the Americana and Western influenced stylings than the typical podcast fair it is the perfect embodiment of the mindset we love to see in the Nashville area. The Trey Deuce Club itself is a collective of musicians all writing together, playing in each others projects and cultivating support in general. Musicians making music together for the sake of making music; with a great community being created as a byproduct.

Finding artists for these podcasts can sometimes be a laborious task – as I prefer to include artists that have additional materials beyond the one included track that is worth checking out. Cherry picking one good song here and there would be much easier but it’s always a bummer to dive further into a newly discovered artists catalog of works just to discover that you’ve already heard their best (and possibly only worthwhile) offering. All that being said, I’ve done my best to vet each of these artists beyond just the one song and I’m happy to report they hold up.

A little late on delivering this one (according to the self imposed “every three weeks” rule) but it’s chalk full of good stuff. Several new acts introduced here that you should check out (Milktooth, Bows and Arrows, The Lake, Paper Navy) and serious goodness from artists you should already love (Cortney Tidwell, Ole Mossy Face, Codaphonic, Hands Down Eugene).

Overall my personal opinion on this one is – worth multiple listens and digging a little deeper to hear even more.

This podcast makes an attempt to focus on some straightforward Rock bands around town. Nashville has no shortage of said genre of band but it’s getting increasingly difficult to be a compelling rock band these days. The bands included in this iteration are either doing some great, showing promise to do something great or just doing something already established really well. I’ll let you decide which is which.

Notes for listening:

• DPaul does not fit under the large umbrella of “rock” but it still needs to be heard.
• Dewey Decibel is more of what I’d call an “indie” outfit but that term is somehow more broad than “rock” so it’s an either/or type of situation.

There is no single person that better embodies “owning” this town more than Aaron Hartley, the man behind Theory 8 Records. To look at the roster of artists and catalog of releases from the label it would seem that he basically has a monopoly on the quality Nashville music. Obviously, there are loads of other great acts in town but Theory 8 never falters; every release is quality.

This podcast features six Theory 8 artists (some of which fall under the Management umbrella of the business) and it’s a satisfying listen from top to bottom. We’re also rather happy to have two exclusives – one from the forthcoming Shoot the Mountain EP and one from Eliza the Arrow, the new project from Elizabeth Cameron (best known for Forget Cassettes).

We Own This Town makes no qualms about embracing its subjectivity. With that in mind, each of our contributors were asked to choose 4 – 5 songs from the past year that they felt rose to the top and they’d be compiled into our final podcast for the year of 2008. We are pleased to report that this compilation does not encompass all of the great releases from the past year, just many of our favorites. Download it, listen to it, enjoy it, save it as a time capsule for 2008 or as an introductory mix for people wondering what Nashville has to offer. Nashville rock is never in short order but it feels like lately there has been a surplus of goodness that should be appreciated. This edition of We Own This Town attempts to highlight some of the more recent releases from some of Nashville’s finest. Granted, the How I Became the Bomb track has been around for awhile but it is included here for historical purposes (and it made a good segue).

If the Meemaw track “Blue in the Backlight” doesn’t make your summer a little better you should give up on trying to enjoy music ever again. Though I personally think all of the tracks on this edition are worth innumerable relistenings.

In an attempt to showcase a tiny bit more variety in musical styles from around town this edition of We Own This Town makes an honest effort at focusing on music based a bit more in the electronic realm of things. That being said, there is still plenty of guitar present and not a whole lot of the traditional 4/4 grotesque dance floor beatz. Finding material for this edition was surprisingly difficult and equally refreshing to come across a handful of instrumental and experimental bands I’d not run into before.
