Creature Comfort – Fox Tales

Never underestimate the influence of alluring album art! I know nothing of Creature Comfort beyond the fact that they tagged themselves from Nashville, have eye catching album artwork and often create a bit of raucous upbeat, layered indie rock (sometimes it’s not so raucous but it’s still smart, enjoyable tunes). I suggest starting with “Friend of a Friend.”

Tue Mommies – Mother Knows Best

If you recall, I recently pointed you in the direction of the works of Jerry Campbell – an underrated local musician that, deservedly, got a tribute record from several of his friends. Now he’s got a new project all his own entitled Tue Mommies. There’s already a full-length and an EP ready for your consumption. I suggest starting with Fore!, one of my personal favorites of the batch thus far.

I’ve got a good feeling this won’t be the last time we hear from Mr. Campbell.

Los Colognes – Working Together

Despite the fact that I just posted about their initial single, the full-length album from Los Colognes, Working Together, is now available Rachel Briggs really caught my eye – hence the immediate posting about it here. The album will be available May 28th but you might as well go ahead and order it now – look at it! It’s gorgeous. Oh, and that preview track is pretty great too.

Tower Defense – “The Lottery” (Rough)

It’s not entirely mixed or mastered yet but this new track from Tower Defense is great. Double bass playing is not something you would likely immediately gravitate towards but it creates this amazing combo of post-rock angularity and totally dance-y grooves. I can’t wait to hear more.

It’s always nice when Apollo Up! gets back together for various shows and special undertakings. Such was the case with the BOSTON One Fund Fundraiser at Mercy Lounge last week when they covered five Mission of Burma songs. If you missed it, or just want to live it again, you can watch all five songs right here.

German Error Message – The Lifting

If you’re at all familiar with the work of The Microphones, this quiet collection of songs from Murfreesboro’s German Error Message will be a real treat to your ears. There is a tension and a authenticity that comes with the hushed approach. I’m happy to hear music of this vein coming from our area.

Los Colognes – “Working Together”

The first single from East Nashville’s Los Colognes is a breezy little upbeat number. Hard not to enjoy it. Curious to hear more!

Tonight at Mercy Lounge will be a little event called Dirty Water : A Benefit for the Victims of the Boston Bombing. This gathering, put on by everyone’s favorite Boston ex-pat Sean Maloney, will not only raise funds for victims of the bombing but it will also provide you with a healthy dose of quality entertainment.Look at this!

It’s been a long time coming but the James Wallace and The Naked Light album, Some Strange News From Another Star, has finally made its way to vinyl. You can get it here. To celebrate the release, the band released a rather brilliant video for To The River – it’s simple but it’s captivating.

I’m biased but this new Hotpipes album, Dust, is beyond good. The newly released video for “Magic Is Everywhere” is a testament to its goodness. I’ve watched it so many times and it’s every bit as engaging as it was the first time.

Playing this Saturday, May 11th, at Mercy Lounge for their record release show. It’s $10 and you get a copy of the LP.

Check out Matt Mahaffey’s (Self) combo performance + talk at the 2013 TEDxNashville conference, “Nice Guys Don’t Finish Last, Nice Guys Finish Happy.” In it, he speaks to his experience dealing with major record labels, producing big radio friendly bands and creating sounds for ad agencies – all of which, apparently, required a great deal of compromise. It’s great to see him speak with such honesty and authenticity on the subject.. now I just want to hear all the nitty gritty details.

Did you know Birdcloud had a second album entitled One More Again? It’s maybe not as Instant-Classic as the first batch of songs but with absurdity like the above, “Did You Go Swimmin’?” and “Snail Trail” – it’s hard not to love.

A Tribute to Machines – Hot in the Maui: A Tribute to Jerry Campbell

I didn’t know the name Jerry Campbell until I stumbled across this tribute album featuring some WOTT favorites – Ryan Ervin, Todd Kemp, Matt Moody, Matt Mueller, etc etc. It’s a tribute in the truest sense – these players highly respect the creations of Campbell and are putting it on a pedestal to showcase just how good they believe it to be. My ignorance aside, a cursory listen will unveil this dedication to be completely sensible. This is pop rock with all the right combination of elements. I’m diving in knowing that I’ll emerge on the other side with a new favorite local talent.

Sugar Sk*_*lls = Intermission

I love Sugar Sk*_*lls for a variety of reason. First, it’s great that we have music like this emerging from Nashville. The outside world really does need reminding that we, as a city, are capable of a lot more than Country / SingerSongwriter tunes. Secondly, and most importantly, it’s quality 8-bit goodness with a bit of leaning on the spooky and the dancey. Also, I can’t not recommend anything tagged with crunkstep lazerblaps.

Hotpipes- Dust

It’s been teased at for weeks but the new album from Hotpipes is now available for streaming in its entirety (it’s also on Spotify or Rdio if that’s your thing). Personally, I think this album is Grade A Goodness. I liked Hotpipes before this record but I love Hotpipes after immersing myself in this.

Sadly, I missed the Record Store Day performance so I really can’t wait to see them at Mercy Lounge on May 11th.

Blank Range – Phase II

Sturdy Girls recently released this phenomenal tape from Blank Range. It’s got some serious 70’s rock swagger on the upbeat tracks and a bit of a forelorn smirk on the more ballad-y undertakings. Rather enjoying this release and am looking forward to hearing a Phase III.

Norm – NORM

When I received an email from Bandcamp yesterday that New Music from NORM was now available I was a bit taken aback. For whatever reason, I assumed Dave Paulson’s solo project was lost in the shuffle of all of his other endeavors. Fortunately, for all of us, he’s able to juggle being in a number of bands and still write, record and release an album of original material that hits that sweet spot of Melancholy Pop perfectly. I can’t recommend this enough. Go get it.

Milktooth – “Whispers in the Dark” (Mumford & Sons cover)

another quality cover from the Stay Home America series. Well, that’s a guess. I’ve never actually heard the original but I have confidence that Milktooth wouldn’t butcher it.

Millionaire Magicians – In Repose



Before breaking up Millionaire Magicians actually recorded a second album, In Repose, and just never released it. That has now been rectified and it’s available as a free download.

Newcomers Kokopeligroso & Blackbear collaborate to make The Turtle Shuffle EP. They’ve barely played any shows and it’s probably not wise to judge a band by two songs but I’m loving the overall vibe.

In case you missed it, Jota Ese released a new mixtape / album / video on April 20th. Some might call it Record Store Day but I think there were other obvious reasons. Regardless of the why, it’s another fine release from Day Old Records and Jota Ese.

The Maloneys – Get a Snare

What I love about The Maloneys is the same thing I hate about them – they seem to be intentional terrible. Lots of gritty / poor recording and general “why did I just listen to that?” feelings emanate from these 14+ minutes but it’s hard to turn away.

This week has been crazy. Just bonkers in terms of terrible things happening. So, you owe it to yourself to have a nice weekend! Do not slip up tomorrow. Attend as many Record Store Day festivities as you can. You’ll thank yourself for it. Here’s the rundown that I posted Monday:

Grimeys / The Basement – this is a no brainer and always insanely packed. Performances from The Features, Hotpipes, PUJOL and a bunch more.

The Groove – every bit as good as the Grimey’s celebration in my opinion. Lots of affordable vinyl and performances from Tristen, Forget Cassettes, Western Medication and a bunch more.

Fond Object Grand Opening – you know there’s a new record store opening up in Inglewood right across from The Village Pub? Well, there is and they have performances from Promised Land, Cheap Time, JP5 and more. 

Echo Group – “Gia”



Echo Group will be providing the soundtrack for the forthcoming Balee Greer line at the Local Honey Spring Fashion show (starts at 6pm on Sunday). They’re playing three tracks – one of which is the free download “Gia” embedded above. Looking forward to more.

Hotpipes – Answer Your Telephone

Another week, another reminder that Hotpipes have a new record coming out May 7th. The band is also playing this Saturday at Grimey’s Record Store Day celebration and I imagine they’ll play this one. The video features a pretty freaky looking paternal demon figure – you know, as a good video should!

Big congratulations to Ri¢hie for winning Road to Bonnaroo Round 3. If you haven’t listened to his new album, Night Games yet, do so now. It’s great.

Record Store Day 2013 is this Saturday, April 20th. By the end of the week you will likely be overwhelmed with updates about it but there’s a ton of great stuff going on around town worth participating in.. so better to plan earlier than not.

Listen to “Mama Said” immediately. Best track yet from these guys.

Just a bit of a technical heads up for everyone. The calendar listing system has changed from every show being manually entered to being Powered by Songkick. There are multiple reasons for this: 1) More than one person can easily add shows to the calendar now. 2) Shows added to Songkick show up on Bandcamp profiles; this is good for everyone. 3) Adding / modifying shows within Songkick is incredibly easy (probably too easy) and allows for adding new shows to be an understandable process by anyone.

Hopefully this means that the calendar can be kept up to date more easily and more accurately. That is, after all, the point of the sidebar, right? If you want your show listed, make sure it’s on Songkick!

Honey Locust – The Great Southern Brood Kickstarter

Raising money for an album via Kickstarter is a tough gig. Honey Locust has been making the rounds for awhile now and is ready to record a full-length record – The Great Southern Brood. They calculate that they’ll need approximately $5k to record and release the album which, honestly, is a pretty low amount considering how much hiring strings, recording an album and releasing on vinyl can cost. Give their pitch video a watch and see if you’ve got a few bucks to throw their way.. you’ll get a free live EP instantly for your contributions.

It’s unfair for me to review this record. Not only is it part of my little label experiment but I’ve also known Beth Cameron since she first started making music. I was at the first Forget Cassettes show and have had a (small) hand in helping to promote every endeavor she’s had in the past twelve years. So, I’m quite biased. I like that she’s exploring new musical territory and continuously willing to bear her whole emotional self – and, in this case, her whole physical self. It’s a dense album and a rewarding one – I’m sure it’s especially cathartic if you can relate to the basic premise underlying most of the songs.

Tom Skinker – Self-Titled

Quick! Without looking up any additional information – tell me what year this album of Seriously Classic Rock Songs from Tom Skinker comes from? Did you say mid-70′s? Did you say it was an semi-ironic contemporary album recorded in the late 00′s? Or did you say it was an honest-to-god endeavor recorded from the mid-80′s to the mid-90′s? That’s the one. Maybe “Tom Skinker” is a name from Rock History I should be more familiar with and I’ll have egg on my face once the full story is revealed to me but, in the meantime, I’m just going to enjoy these tracks. Legitimately.

The fact that the cover art of 7.25.2148 depicts an isolated lonely road is a great indication of what you’re getting into. This is one of MAVS more dark soundscapes with just a tiny light at the end of the tunnel with the end tracking “Praxis.” I guess we just need to wait 135 years to find out exactly what movie picks this up as a soundtrack – it’s going to be a spooky one.

Wait for it… waaaait for it… Casa Castile!

May 7th is coming up and Hotpipes don’t want you to forget it. They just released this teaser video and, despite being biased, I think it’s great. Really looking forward to the release of Dust.

The Jane Shermans – “Shotgun”

I don’t know a great deal about The Jane Shermans but I found this song enjoyable and the video has some great things going on. Dive in.

R. Stevie Moore – Various Albums

Over the past month or so I’ve been very slowly dipping my toe into the well of content that is R. Stevie Moore. When you have as much output as he does, it’s hard to know where to start. So, I’m suggesting the following albums as a means of acclimating yourself to his aesthetic. Don’t let the lo-fi scare you, this guy is a brilliant pop master and the songs shine through no matter the production.

Flash Pasteurized – “various rsm oldie hits, run through a device which sped them up without raising the pitch.” Kind of a great Best Of entry point.

RSM Reforms The Beatles – Beatles covers, duh. 

Instrumentality/Aviation – great environmental music.

Bully – Bully EP

It’s just two songs but it’s a nice dose of rock with a nod to the slacker 90′s style I happen to have a serious affinity for.

I love Penicillin Baby’s JAMS Volume I and II so I am real pleased to check out this great video for All Dolled Up off the forthcoming JAMS VOLUME III. The video might be sexy but I’m too confused to be able to say for sure.

I love these promo videos from Meadownoise whenever he’s got a show coming up. This performance of “Yep, That’s Right” is a healthy reminder that he’ll be playing at The Stone Fox on Thursday along with Echo Group and Tower Defense – an incredibly solid bill if I’ve ever heard one.

Another quality dispatch (if I may say so myself) from the bottomless well of goodness that is the Nashville rock / electronic / indie scene. There’s probably a better name for that but it’s all I’ve got at the moment. Enjoy.

Caveman the Wise – Time in the Shadow of the Thing too Big to See

How about an electronic / hip-hop album fueled by some darker times? It may not be a treat for the creator but, personally, I’m usually a fan of the results that come from such troubled times. Time in the Shadow of the Thing too Big to See consists of plenty of recognizable samples, rolling beats and a dash of descending into madness.

While it may not be specifically music related, there’s always been a large overlap of the music world and the fashion world. Fine Arts and all that. NATIVE put together this profile on designer, and Ettes drummer, Poni Silver in prep for the forthcoming showcase week. It’s always interesting to hear someone’s background story and how they managed to end up where they are. This is a prime example.

I am quite biased* when it comes to this one but I think these two songs from Tipper Whore are primed and ready to be your summer anthems. I mean, who wouldn’t want to group together and sing “Day Drunk” with a bunch of buddies? And the sexual innuendo is laid on so thick with “Two Sticks” that you just can’t help but enjoy it. Undoubtedly, yesterday you heard about the passing of Nashville staple Ben Todd. I did not know the man beyond a few cursory interactions but have always had massive respect for everything he was involved in. Nashville’s Dead, Freakin’ Weekend and D Watusi just to name a few were all such massive successful undertakings.

To say his passing is a tragic loss for the city is an understatement of the largest degree.

CountryMusic.com – aka First Generation Records – has uploaded a ton of country classics to their Bandcamp acccount. Typically, I try to stray from mentioning much of anything having to do with country music in the realm of WOTT. The whole point of this blog is to showcase the diversity of our fair city outside of the country realm. However, sometimes it’s good to take a step back and recognize your roots. Real, legitimate, country music has its place and shouldn’t be pushed to the back corner just because of past 30 years of lame Music Row acts that typically come to mind.



Long story short, there’s some gold in here. Particularly this Pete Drake record that I don’t think I could ever listen to enough. Sadly, it doesn’t feature Forever but that’s the real beauty of these country music albums – they’re enjoyable by themselves but they can also lead you down a path to other goodness you might never have encountered.

Let’s get two things out of the way. First, I realize it’s late into January 2013 and, thus, a compilation regarding music from 2012 seems a bit behind schedule. This is undebatable. Secondly, it’s dishonest, disingenuous and distasteful to call this a ‘Best Of’ as I have in years past. There’s just far too much music coming out of our fair region to be able to put an entire year’s worth of it into a single, listenable, stream. With that in mind, we’re calling this a ’2012 Retrospective’ – there’s some serious oversights and questionable choices but it represents a portion of the last year. That’s all we’re going for here.

Excuses and preambles aside, I think it’s a fine hour and a half listen. My apologies to all the bands that were left out (JEFF, Reid Magette, Richie, Turbo Fruits, Wild Cub, Umbrella Tree, Ultras S/C, get better, Anchor Thieves, Calicocat, Century Club, Chancellor Warhol, Cherub, Conestyle, Mom&Dad, Shaky Voices, Tower Defense, etc. etc.) but I think you’ll find those that were included to be a fair representation of the diversity of Nashville.

2013 and beyond is only going to get crazier in terms of amount of content. This is a great problem to have.

If you’ve been paying attention you’ll know that over the past year Echo Group released a series of EP’s entitled The Challtalk Record Collection, Volumes 1 through 3. Well, they’ve completed that cycle and compiled all three into one great album – obviously titled The Complete Challtalk Record Collection. These guys have continued to impress me on record and live throughout their existence; let’s hope that trend continues.

Tristen is looking to finish up her sophomore album, C A V E S, and has turned to Kickstarter to take pre-orders for the album, special edition version and even personal hangtime if you so desire. It’s not a bad way to run awareness of an already anticipated album. She’s made great progress at the time of this posting but still has a good way to go. Chip in!

I knew when I heard the first single, Brother & Sister, from D. Watusi’s debut full-length that the album was going to be a treat but I didn’t realize it would be this much of a treat. It’s a great rock record that manages to wear it’s influences openly but doesn’t sound boringly derivative. It also manages to maintain a super healthy balance between the agression of its garage rock roots and it’s poppier, catchier side. All and all, a great record but I’m guessing you knew that already.

Dust & Grooves is a fantastic music blog showcasing vinyl collectors and the culture surrounding them. There’s a ton of great content on the site but they just released a new mix and an accompanying great writeup on Third Man Records / solo artist / vinyl connoisseur Ben Blackwell. There’s a lot of interesting information within regarding his collection and his involvement with Third Man but I find snippets like this the most compelling:

Q: What do you look for in a record?
A: Lately I’ve been looking for things that don’t make sense. Records that shouldn’t exist. Releases that seem stuck in a vacuum or created via time machine. But overall, a record should captivate you. It should elicit an emotion. It should tell a story. There’s no better format for the dissemination of a song that the 7” 45rpm record. That will never change.
