Introducing the Obox Micro Blogging Theme Collection

It was 10 days ago that we announced a little secret was brewing at Obox Design. At the time we only had half an idea of what we wanted to do, but as we progressed further it became clear as to what we needed to create and what was missing in the theme Market.

These days it's not just good enough to have blog, or a twitter account, or a Tumblr account, or a Posterous account.

You need all of them, and that's where we step in.

What's the Secret?

In a nutshell: You are going to have to wait till the 2nd of November.

What I can tell you is that it started with our own CMS called OCMX Live (which we have successfully ported to Wordpress) and culminated in our Wordpress theme company.

We never like standing still for too long at Obox and we love to set challenges and deadlines which are hard to achieve.

Master of one or good at many?

This question has been in my head for quite a while now.

I started to question myself when I stopped obsessing over detailed design and changed my focus to minimalist work.

At about this time last year I wanted to be as good as anyone with as many styles as possible. It started with creating some dynamic layouts and then skinning them with different themes, grunge, hand drawn, minimalist and so on.

The intention at the time was just to get a taste of each so that when the time came that someone wanted that style, I could produce it.

It was my belief that you had to be good at any design style to be considered a good web designer. I used to think it was a bad thing if my portfolio had a ‘samey' feel to it.

How does a permanent 60% discount sound?

You may have noticed that every Friday for the past 3 or 4 weeks we ran a special called 'OBOXFRIDAY'. What we were doing was testing what gave us the best return in terms of sales and of course, marketing.

The results were plain to see and so we have decided to create a permanent special that I am sure many of you will appreciate.

Let's get down to business, the preview

We've been wanting to create a business styled theme since we redesigned our home page.

What I have done is taken elements from our current home page layout and applied it to ‘Briefcase', our first business theme to come out of Obox. The research was done long ago, so it was just a matter of applying it to a cool style.

Problem with that is, lately I have been obsessed with minimalist design (Press, Platform, Through the Lens). So I have decided that Briefcase will have a minimalist style as well as the more conventional colorful and detailed design.

Here are two sneak-peak screenshots of a theme which we are confident will help your conversion.

Through the Lense - a Premium Wordpress Gallery Theme

For as long as I can remember I have always wanted to create a gallery type theme.

I know that there are already many out there but there is something about the potential design of a gallery theme that always made me want to creating one.

Last night I got some time and inspiration to have a crack at designing one and came up with 'Through the Lense', the design is still pretty rough around the edges but the concept is there and it will be released in about 2 weeks time.

Platform, spread the news - Theme Preview

We have barely mentioned the second of our two new Wordpress themes that will be coming out of Obox sometime next week.

It's called Platform and it's purely a news / high content orientated theme. Think the NewYorker.com, Portfolio.com (still one of my fav designs ever) and even CNN.com. All those type of sites were used to gain design inspiration and understanding of making a site which looks good and hold a tonne of content.

I promise that task is more difficult than it may seem, much more difficult than I thought before I started designing the site.

Today is your lucky day though, because probably for the first time ever I am showing you a full screenshot of the site. No 'sneaky previews', this is a full preview.

With the build up to the launch of Selecta, uhhh building up, we decided to whip up some wallpapers for you!

Basically I asked Natalie to draw me some TV's and then scan them in. I chose the most relevant TV shape according to the style of Selecta and then added the 'official' color's and logo to it.

Below are quite a few size variants for you to go wild with. Hopefully the next present we give you will be a full blown theme. For now you will have to deal with some awesome wallpapers ;)

Two new Selecta teasers

So earlier this week we gave you the most terrible sneak peak of Selecta.

It's how we roll at Obox, first one drop of a taster and then slowly a tea spoon, then a table spoon full and eventually the full meal.

So today is tea spoon day.

What we have here are two screenshots taken from the home page. This theme is aimed at video bloggers but is more than capable of being a normal blog with pictures instead of videos.

Not so Incredible Connection

For those who don't know, Incredible Connection is South Africa's leading PC retail store. If you want something PC related and you ask your friend where you can get one the most likely answer is 'Incredible Connection'.

They have stores in every shopping center around the country and generally are quite good.

Unfortunately they aren't quite good when it comes to their online shopping store. They not even half good, in fact, they may be half terrible.

They recently 'soft' launched their new site. When I say new I mean it's just a different one from before, because the 'new' one looks like it comes straight out of 1999.

So let's start from the top as to why the new Incredible Connection site sucks.

5 ways to market your Facebook fan page

Last week we spoke about whether or not a Facebook Fan Page was the way forward. Now that FB has announced that you can update your Twitter profile from Facebook I think the 'game' has officially changed. Not only can you post more content on your page but now you can also use the latest Social Media darling (twitter) at the same time.

Here are some methods we plan to use in order to grow our fan numbers on our page. The more of us who use the pages, the better.

What's next at Obox

We usually aren't so great at planning things at Obox. We usually just set a date and then do whatever it takes to achieve it on time.

But this time things are slightly different.

Here is what is coming up at Obox over the next 2 months or so.

Facebook Fan Pages are they the way forward?

It still baffles me that you can begin to compare Facebook with Twitter. Personally I use twitter more, but mostly because of desktop App's like tweetdeck. I'm sure that if we put in the effort we would be able to interact just as much or more on the Fan Pages.

Press a stylish minimalist Wordpress theme

We are excited to finally launch our latest theme to come out of the Obox Signature Series, called 'Press'.

Press is a minimalist blog theme which can serve many different purposes. The nature of its design means the modifications are endless and the boundaries for content are only determined by you.

While we were testing the theme Marc had cycling content on his test side, I had racing content and we had a third test site running with artwork orientated content. They all looked good with the theme.

Why our home page design sucked

Since the beginning of our 30 day theme creation endeavor I was experiencing a massive creative block when it came to Obox's new front page which would introduce everyone to our themes. I often just thought 'don't worry, it will come to you'.

In the last 48hrs of the project it still hadn't 'come to me' and I wasn't ever happy with the way our front page looked or functioned. I knew that it was something I had to come back to at a later date.

So after the initial launch and just over a month on, we have finally completed the new home page which includes a total revamp of the layout including the introduction, content and footer area's. We have also added a few new pages and tidied up others.

Pressing on - Launch Date Announced

We just thought that it would be cool to give you a final peek at our new theme, 'Press'. The Archives layout (pictured above) features a little thumbnail next to the date and title of the post, there is also a comment count in brackets. Things may change ever so slightly once we have done the full WP conversion but this is very much what you can expect.

In between making pretty layouts we have also decided on the launch day for Press. I think you will be happy to find out that it will be earlier than you expect. Launch day is officially Wednesday the 12th of August.

We plan on pulling some late nighters this week in order to get everything done.

As a side note we want to remind you to watch From the Couch on Thursday. In the show we will include a highspeed screencast of me (David) converting the gallery from a Fireworks file into CSS and HTML. The video is being edited as I type and I promise it will be cool.

Preview of the gallery from our new Press theme

I promised earlier this week that we would give you another sneak peak of Press.

In particular I wanted to sneak in a screenshot of the gallery. The Press gallery breaks the mould from the current OCMX gallery layouts that have been integrated into our themes.

This layout features closely packed images, with one pixel spacing, which are highlighted when rolled over. It's classy and it also suits the culture of Press - minimalist and easily modifiable.

A sneaky preview of Press

Knowing that the first set of themes that we have released at Obox Design have been quite niche focused we wanted to broaden our horizons for theme number 5.

So far all our themes have been quite heavily based on blog layouts. However with our new theme, which is coming sooner than you think, we want to give you a bit more flexibility.

The new theme is called 'Press'. It's a minimalist theme which gives you huge scope for modification. If however you are not in the mood to modify your designs then 'Press', in its standard form, is more than adequate to be presented to your readers.

New Theme and a Price Cut!

We are super excited to announce a new theme and big prices cuts for Single and Development Users!

Since launching the Obox Signature Series we have had a huge amount of inquiries and requests as to why Hash One was not for sale.

It finally got to a point where we would be fools to not put it back on sale. So we set out to create a new color scheme and also updated the theme to contain our latest OCMX-Live upgrades.

We have also cut the prices on all our themes! We are busy preparing our new club package and decided that it would be better if we priced our themes in order to benefit both singe theme purchases and club purchases.

We're not machines, why do we work like them?

What I've come to realize in my relatively short time in the working world, is that just like in sport, we can't be 100% work fit every single day of the year. There are months where Obox is flying through projects, leaving work at crazy hours not bothering about anything but the task at hand, but then there are other months where we're struggling for inspiration and grinding aimlessly through work, counting the extra hours like ten year olds at aftercare. Why aren't we treating our work the same way that athletes treat their training?

The theme will be launched this week and will include some rocking back end features which utilize an our OCMX-Live content management system.

A Preview to our first theme

We have been planning to create a Wordpress Theme for quite some time now.

It was meant to be out at the end of this month but due to 'real' work we have had to delay it slightly.

It is called 'Hash One', it will be free, it will be for bloggers and it will be for Wordpress.

We thought we would whet your appetite with this fuzzy screenshot and judge what the reaction would be!

So there you have it, above is the sneakiest of previews of our first theme to come out of Obox Design.

The New Obox Design Website

In this screencast, David outlines the design and marketing decisions which went into new New Obox Design website.

We were quite against the site being a regular portfolio site, we wanted it to work in the same way that an application or theme site would work; the aim for it to be more interactive for our users.

Designing a new logo Part 2

We have been on a mission to redesign our company logo for almost a year now but due to real work we have had to delay for quite a while.

We eventually got round to the redesign process which I blogged about earlier this year.

One of the processes in the new logo design was using reader/twitter feedback to improve our logo. To cut a long story short, it worked. Our logo has evolved from being too raw to slightly refined but 'over the top' to what it is today in this blog post.

On next week Wednesday's From the Couch Episode we will be showing you the internals of an Online T-shirt Company.

I know many designer's who would LOVE to run an online t-shirt store and this episode will just blow your minds about how 'hectic' it can be to manage such a beast. It is by far more difficult than we all think.

Hi Everyone, it is our first post of many for 2009. We have decided to include this video on We Are not Freelancers because we believe it applies to this sites content 100%.

Taken from From the Couch:

"We believe that 2009 will bring in a whole bunch of new and creative layouts. One of the most under used of these layouts comes from inspiration gained by looking at magazines.

Blog layouts have stagnated, it is time to push on and magazine inspired sites will soon be one of those ways.

Brace yourself, things are about to become awesome."

OBOX-Designs year in review

It is time for our round up of a year which has flown by. What started as a career in one direction, took a major U-turn and went in another.

Marc and I have been in web design for 5 years but in the last 4 months we have learnt more than the rest combined. This all occurred because we started this blog. Since starting this blog we have met some awesome people which have provided us help and business.

It is too easy for us to post our 1 million top websites for 2008, but there are already tonnes of websites doing it, plus we like to be different (...like creating our own blogging system... WHY?!?!) so this is more about OBOX-Design than anything else.

Technique for creating a hand drawn website

We first got into the blogging world with our website blog 'We Are not Freelancers'. The site is a combo of the 'Ten Pixel Method' and hand drawn characters and letters. A lot of people who we have met say they wish they could create something simila,r but will not because they can't draw.

We say anyone can draw if you use a simple technique.

David gives you a quick lesson on how to create a hand drawn website using the 'don't lift the pencil' technique.

Bring in the Laymans

Designing a web application is something that most of you who read our blog will be familiar with, whether it be through designing an interface or coding the back-end, or both. And because of that you can relate to how difficult it is to get your site bug-free and ready for public release. I know that some companies like to bring in other web people to test their sites, and although it's better than doing it yourself, you can't replace the real thing - the end user.

Using padding in your design

I am a padding addict. I love padding so much that if I turned into a pillow I would probably be happy.

No seriously. I consider margins and padding to be more critical than 960.gs or the 10px method. You can have the best grid based layout but if your padding / margins are out it will not look good.

The Operators

When we first started We Are not Freelancers a lot of business opportunities and new clients came through the wood work.

Since then we have been working on multiple projects which came directly from this blog. Of the six projects four of them have been completed but of those four I can only show you one of them for now. The reason being is that the other three are still being worked on by the people who we did the work for (we did the designs, they are doing the programming).

In the following post I will show you a site which was launched just one week ago called The Operators. The Operators is run by a seriously skilled photoshopper called Kai Bastard, some of the work featured on the site is truly awesome.

There is nothing wrong with listening

...start of rant...

I believe that Marc and I are very good listeners. In fact as good as we are at listening we also suck at listening.

We were once in a meeting which contained way too many silent moments because we were so used to keeping out mouth shut that we never had anything to add.

So while I am all for listening I am all for talking too. This brings me to my reason for this post.

Let's Keep it Clean

As a bit of a code monkey myself, something that I've thankfully improved on over time is the cleanliness of my code. As I said in a previous post, it's amazing how many tricks you learn over the years as you knock out sites more regularily (well, hopefully that's the case or you'd be a shrinking enterprize).

I think it's important not only to learn new tricks but also aim to maximise them in order to make your code more and more simple, as opposed to using them once and forgetting about them, so I thought I would share some good practise tips we've discovered over the years here at OBOX HQ.

Keep it simple, Charge them

This post has come about through my thoughts of how open source programs make money. It is a bit of a rant as I am only seeing one side of the coin here, so if you can then please enlighten me.

Yesterday I read a post on 37signals which spoke about how to make money twice. To me the best part of the post was in the first paragraph.

It said: "A good portion of this industry is still trying to figure out how to make money for the first time (hint: charge people)." What I loved about it was simple, "hint: charge people". Brilliant.

What's 'Appening?

Developing websites is no easy task at the best of times. I realized how much you actually learn over the years when my friend was given the task of creating a website for his father's business a few weeks ago. All the small tricks and, dare I say it, hacks that I have picked up and have become accustomed to seem like mountainous tasks to him, being so fresh in web design.

My point being, we need things which make our lives a tad easier, and cut to dev time down as much as possible. This is where Firefox comes in and rocks our world. There are so many cool apps you can download that it's sometimes hard to know which ones are truly useful. However, for our application article we're not going to concentrate on just Firefox, but also applications we use for other programs...

Do you have a 'style'?

This is something I have never considered until recently, but have you ever taken a step back to consider your style of design?

It is not something I have thought of until, the other day, someone took a look at one of our web designs and said "Yes, that is definitely your style". Their response surprised me because I have never thought of myself as having a 'style' per se.

The Hurdles of Creating an Application

We have recently started developing a new application for the web which we hope will a) be helpful to users and b) be reasonably successful.

This is not the first time we have attempted to build an application which will be used by many. We once developed of an application for a sport, the product itself worked perfectly but we failed to market it and get it out there.

We have embarked on a new adventure and plan to put what we have learnt to the test with our new project.

Since we are still in the development process; we will take you through what we have learned up to now. There is still about 2 months before our new app comes out of Alpha but we have still discovered quite a bit up to now.

First things first, we thought we would let you have a look at what an awesome summer's day looks like from our offices. We decided to lunch it outside today and couldn't resist the temptation to show off a bit.

One of the people involved in the site realized this and gave us a call...

A Recession. The perfect time to make money

For those of you who haven't realised, the world is currently in major financial 'blip'. Due to banks dishing out credit too willingly to people who are not prime borrowers, we are facing tough times in the global market.

As a result of this people are tightening the proverbial belt, businesses are closing down left, right & center, there are job losses all round and it is generally not a very nice time. Luckily, whenever there is a recession, there are still opportunities to make money.

Ladies and Gentlemen, we would like to announce We Are not Freelancers' first competition.

We decided that we wanted to make this competition a little different to the other ones currently on the web. Usually you would expect us to ask you to give a reason why you should win these awesome prizes. But because we are different we decided it is time for all those who are stuck behind the computer screen to take a step outside!

The Ten Pixel Method

Don't like grids? Try our ten pixel method.

There may be a proper name for this somewhere out there and it may be commonly known. If so we apologise if this has been repeated.

Grids are making a comeback and are becoming quite common in the web world. If your site doesn't follow a set structure in its layout, it may seem disjointed and difficult to navigate, read or just look at.

The Ten Pixel Method however, has very little to do with grids. It is something I use for quick execution while still keeping a neat structure all round.

Why the new Facebook Sucks

Generally with movie titles the sequel to a good movie is often rather shocking. How often have you seen a movie get rave reviews and then when number two arrives it just falls flat on its face? I would say quite often.

Fortunately this usually isn't the case with websites, often a new website means a cleaner design with better user functionality and more features. It usually harnesses new web tech and loads quicker. Just take a look at the redesign of Mint.com to know what I mean.

Unfortunately this has not been the case with Facebook '2.0'... In this post I am going to analyze why the new design is not so pleasing to the eye.

I'm sure we're not the only ones affected by this, but it's a growing concern for us at OBOX HQ. What we're referring to is the assumption from the Big Corporations that no one has bandwidth limits any more - like us here in the good old Rainbow Nation.

OBOX HQ

Ron Dennis, the owner of the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes Formula 1 team, spent literally hundreds of millions of dollars to build a high tech and inspirational Headquarter for his staff. One of the main features was its view of tranquil open land, this was meant to allow you to clear your mind and maximise creativeness.

Now, although we can't claim to have the most high tech office in the land we reckon it is at least one of most beautiful and has a lot of inspiration... all we need to do is take a step outside and the view (above) alone will take your breath away.

Can you put that on a tab?

Tabbed items have become very popular in the web world. They are ideal for long forms or multiple lists.

There are many tutorials out there which help you create them but some of the techniques take a while to create and others require you to download and install scripts etc.

The tutorial below is from code that we have created, it is very quick to implement, is fast loading and can be carried over to any page. So without further delays, let us get started.

Launch Exposure

Whenever we create a site we always hope that it will get featured on a CSS Gallery. Even though it doesn't mean much in terms of 'greatness' it is still nice to have your work appreciated. In total, I think two of the websites that we have created have ever been featured. I remember when they were featured that there was a slight spike in traffic, maybe 300 visits and it made the clients happy to to know that their new website was getting a bit of exposure.

When we created this site we did so with the same hope that it may get featured on one or two galleries. The main reason for hope was that we had no other way of 'launching' We Are not Freelancers, because we are not in any web circles, so by getting featured it would give us an initial boost and hopefully 10% of those hits would return one day.

Looking and Learning

By their very nature, professional sportsman tend to take the concept of being good at what they do to another level, especially (as far as I can tell) boxers who have the mindset that no one else in the world is a better fighter than them; in their mind there is no one tougher, no one quicker and no one with better skills.

This got me thinking about how easy it is to look at something, like a cool funtion on someones site for example; and think,"that's nice" - and pass on by without seeing how the function or design was put together and excecuted. In a sense this is a tad ignorant and as far as I'm concerned, a bad habit to pick up.

Making money from your passion

Generating money from your hobbie or passion is not an easy thing but somehow we got it right...

Since Marc and I were three years old we have been wearing helmets (who knows why......). Helmets fueled my passion for racing (I often wonder if my blood is in fact petrol) and even when I began racing at the age of 14 I made sure that, despite my shoddy suit and 2nd hand kart, I had to have the best looking helmet. Natrually I always used to dream of being able to design my own helmet.

Content Management

When we first began creating websites each one had it's own way of managing and viewing content. This made things quite confusing when we had to go back to the code and fix bugs and it meant the websites creation took longer in the development phase.

Slowly but surely we started to align the code, taking all the good bits and mixing them together. By the end of last year you could say that we had a pretty reasonable Content Management System. The problem was that it still wasn't a plug-n-play system and often involved file modifications.

We continued using this system until May this year. Since then we updated the CMS so that it was more standard and a lot more dynamic. The speed at which we were able to setup sites increased greatly.

Whoosa

When it comes to working under pressure I often myself a bit nervous. I get fiddly and restless which can seriously compromise production time.
That was until I got one of these awesome 'stress balls'... perfect for when I am designing under pressure. The majority of my design work is done with the mouse which leaves my left hand able to squeeze, shake and throw (at Marc ;-) ) my newly acquired toy!

Who are we?

OBOX comprises of, a whopping, two peeps. Although we often get confused as twins we are in fact one year apart. There is myself, David Perel, and my brother, Marc Perel.

We were born is 1985 and 1986 respectively and the gap between us is 447 days. Even though I know that I am David and Marc knows that he is Marc we still can confuse ourselves when looking at a photo of the past ("Huh?! I wasn't there!" ...."Oh it's Marc").

Why no IE 6?

Since the announcement that 37signals will no longer support IE6 we can see a trend developing with developers dropping its support. IE6 is way out of date with current web standards, in our opinion it is like creating a windows program which needs to support DOS. Surely it is time to move on?

Initially we felt a bit of stress by dropping IE6 but now that our site is almost complete, and with the features we plan to implement, we are glad that we don't have to dedicate hours and hours of time to make the features compatible with the old beast. We also looked at the statistics of all the websites that we have developed and have noticed a steady decline in Explorer 6 users. In fact some sites have less than 30% of the users using it.

Communication is Key

Having just come out of a branding meeting and basically being told that all the work up to now needs to change and go in a new direction I had to ask myself... when is enough, enough?

We have done and are busy with a couple of new websites but there are one or two that stick out for us like sore thumbs. Often it is like a hot potato being thrown around the office - "No you do it. No! YOU DO IT."

How did we do this?

Initially there was never going to be a website, we planned to make posters and t-shirts and then either give them away or sell them (this is still in the pipeline). So I set out on creating a groovy look for the website using the poster as inspiration.

One of the reasons this site was eventually created was to see if OBOX-Design was capable of creating a blog module for the sites that we build. Once or twice we have been asked by our clients for a blog section but have always modified our CMS to do one or two things that a blog can do.

This will be our test bed for bigger and better things which hopefully benefit our clients.

From a blank piece of paper to what you see now took 8 working days and a lot of tea. So where did we start?

Welcome to our new blog!

Welcome to our new blog. OBOX-Design has decided that it is time to move into the blog world. We have been developing websites for 3 years now and create everything from scratch. One of the reasons this site has been created is to see how capable we are of creating a blog module. Everything you see here has been created in house.

So what can you expect from us on this blog? Well, we plan on talking about anything that comes to our mind. Subjects will range from opinions of the Web to maybe the odd tutorial on how to create nifty things using Coldfusion! We also plan on reviewing the design and layout of popular websites.
