WD-HAN at the 2011 FSU Dance Marathon

Hey everyone,

We had the chance to play at the FSU (Florida State University) Dance Marathon this weekend! This Dance Marathon is a charity for the Children’s Miracle Network and is completely student run.

This is the university’s largest student-run philanthropy. In fifteen years their organization has raised over $2.6 million and 100% of the proceeds directly benefit the children of Tallahassee and surrounding areas!

This weekend, for the first time in almost a decade I had access to a Super Nintendo. I must admit it made me happier than I can really convey.

All I can say is, who needs an Xbox?

CDs vs. iTunes?

This is a tough question, because there are definitely plus points to CDs and plus points to buying music online. One great thing about iTunes is that it practically saved the music industry by allowing everyone to buy music online at a very low price. It’s much more ethical than sites created to steal music from artists who worked extremely hard to create it in the first place. Without iTunes coming up with a solution there was no exchange and everyone was unhappy.

When you absolutely can’t wait for the music I can understand and recommend buying online, like I did with Third Eye Blind's album “Out of the Vein” and Mark Knopfler's “The Ragpicker’s Dream”. (Both great albums by the way!)

Now, there’s also something about going to the store and buying a CD from a band you love, going home and playing it loud! Reading the lyrics, notes from the band, looking at the pictures, etc. That’s the one downside to iTunes and buying music online. I know you can buy the album and get the liner notes that way (but you can’t get them with every album for some reason) but I personally like having the physical copy of the album.

All in all, I love that I can go to the store and buy the album and I love that I can buy it at home or wherever I am with my computer.

Which do you prefer?

That's right, WD-HAN was asked to perform a song from our EP acoustically on the Nationally Syndicated TV show, "Daytime".
This morning we traveled out to Tampa to the NBC studios, where we donned the TV make-up and rocked a rendition of "Color of Friend", which was followed by a short interview. We all had an AMAZING time and we're excited to see the show!
Things all dovetailed very nicely with our "Tunes for 10,000" campaign, (don't forget to like our page! http://facebook.com/wdhanmusic) as we played acoustically. We're so honored to have been on the show and thanks to Jason, Victoria and Deanna and the rest of the crew on set! You're all the best!!!

Our segment will be airing on the Daytime show on Thursday, September 16 at 10am for Tampa Bay. Below this post is a guide with the channels and times for other areas.

The Future of the Music Video

Arcade Fire recently launched TheWildernessDowntown.com. If you haven’t seen it: go do so. This brilliant concept and collaboration with Google is a revolutionary step for the music video as we know it.

What makes something revolutionary? A revolution is “a drastic and far reaching change in ways of thinking and behaving.” What Arcade Fire, Google and Chris Milk have done is to bring the viewer inside the video itself. This is drastic. But a revolution is not just about being drastic, this video is far reaching in every sense. What does this bring about for the future? This creates ideas, technology and inspiration for later videos. It sets the bar to a whole new level

Though I’m going on and on about Arcade Fire’s concept - it is not the first jump into augmented reality videos. I’m talking of course about John Mayer’s “Heartbreak Warfare” video. Seen here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZtRHVMcZjI

Per it’s own description on the video: Flash Augmented Reality (FLAR) is a way of creating a digital hologram in 3D space by holding up a marker to your computer's camera and activating a special piece of Flash software. As you can see in this video, I'm holding up a piece of paper with the designated marker (in this case a broken heart), and the video of John Mayer follows it around the screen, and even tilts in 3D space!

People have the ability to come up with so many ideas from these forward leaps, i.e. What if you had to put a picture of yourself in the video, and the singer was singing to YOU? What if you were to design the space the artists were actually performing in?

Hey guys,

Spence here, just checkin' in! So if you've been in touch with us online recently you've heard about our cool "Tunes for 10,000" game. We're really getting a LOT more likes and we CAN'T WAIT to give away our acoustic record!

Next from me is that I'm writing a bunch of new lyrics and I can write about different things all day, but I would really love to hear some suggestions! I know it's different for everyone, but for me I feel like I can write lines about anything; it's the idea that inspires me. I want to write about something that is close to your heart!!!

So, my plan is if you get back to us with ideas, I'll write something based on that and we may end up using it for WD-HAN lyrics!

Cal's Favorite Guitar Album(s) of the Moment #2!

Hello again everyone! Here's the second of many of my favorite guitar albums:

This one is by a bluesman who's been around since the 80's. I only just started listening to his music after I heard a cover of the song "Back Door Slam" on youtube. It just so happens to be one of the greatest blues songs of all time. No lie. Pure truth. After hearing it-, I was hooked.

This guy even has his own Fender Signature Series Strat! And rightly so! After you hear this album, you'll agree too. :)

The album is: The Robert Cray Band / Live from Across the Pond. Track listing is: Phone Booth, Poor Johnny, Our Last Time, Right Next Door (Because of Me), 12 Year Old Boy, I Guess I Showed Her, The Things You Do to Me, I Was Warned, Twenty, Bad Influence, The One in the Middle, Back Door Slam, Time Makes Two and I'm Walkin'.

This two-disc collection shows Cray at his best at the Royal Albert Hall in 2005.

My faves are: Phone Booth (when he starts his second solo, stops and says "It's freezin' out here" and then continues soloing - wow!), Poor Johnny, (of course) Right Next Door (Because of Me), 12 Year Old Boy, Back Door Slam (one of my favorite blues songs) and I'm Walkin' (a fantastic song to end the CD with).

There you go, enjoy! Play it loud when you're driving, when you're at your house, everywhere!
