WATFORD & DISTRICT TABLE TENNIS LEAGUE w/c 9th Jan 2012

The league program got back on track after the Christmas break and it was a good chance to shed the extra ounces (pounds) put on over that period.

In the Premier Div, Progress ‘A’ carried on where they left off, and had a convincing 7-1 victory vs. Bats. Aardvarks did even better beating Cougars 8-0. Progress ‘B’ had a very good result overcoming a strong Abbots Langley team 5-3

In Div One, leaders Eagles continued their good form, with a 6-2 win vs. Gazelles. Chief rivals Post Office had a surprising loss to Watling ’A’, going down 3-5. Lowly Huskies had a boost with an 8-0 victory vs. Hounds, although they both still ‘prop’ up the division.

In Div Two, Audit ‘A’ suffered their first defeat, losing 3-5 to Watling ‘C’. Kangaroos lost 3-5 to a strong Iguanas side. This puts Watling ‘C’ in second place, just behind Audit ‘A‘, and with a game in hand.

In Div Three, Newts, with only two players, won all the legs played in their 5-3 win vs. Progress ‘C’. Panthers gained maximum points in their 7-1 victory vs. Watling ‘D’.

Results:

Premier Div: Bats vs. Progress ’A’ 1-7; Progress ’B’ vs. Abbots Langley 5-3; Cougars vs. Aardvarks 0-8. Div One: Gazelles vs. Eagles 2-6; Post Office vs. Watling ’A’ 3-5; Huskies vs. Hounds 8-0.
Div Two: Watling ’C’ vs. Audit ’A’ 5-3; Kangaroos vs. Iguanas 3-5.
Div Three: Watling ’D’ vs. Panthers 1-7; Progress ’C’ vs. Newts 3-5

Sad news at the passing of Doug Tomsett

I have recently been advised that Doug Tomsett passed away on Sunday 20th November. Doug was president of the Watford Table Tennis league and also acted as Chairman and President of the Hertfordshire Table Tennis County Association in later years. Doug was also a very active participant in the success of the Barnet Table Tennis Club.

For my part I have extremely fond memories of evening coaching sessions at Kingham Hall (St. John's Road) on Wednesday and Thursday evenings in my junior years where Doug and Malcolm Waller spent countless hours coaching us youngsters how to play our beloved game.

Doug lived life to the full and Table Tennis was an important component in his life. Easily recognisable with his unusual Penhold grip playing style, I believe he lifted the Watford Mens championship title in what was a full and distinguished playing career.

I am sure you will share with me in expressing our deepest sympathies to Margaret, Doug's bereaved wife and their family at this difficult time. The funeral is to be help at Watford Crematorium 11:40 on Tuesday 29th November. The family have requested no flowers or donations be sent.

Div One, leaders Eagles suffered their first setback of the season, losig 3-5 to Watling ‘A’, Jonathan Jackson unbeaten for Watling. Danger side Post Office had another fine victory defeating Huskies 7-1, Les Leech was their star. Young Ishan Bairoliya gave another good performance when winning all his games in Falcons 6-2 win vs. Gazelles.

In Div Two, leaders Audit ‘A’ had to come from behind to draw with Iguanas, David Oram Iguanas star. Audit ‘B’ also drew, but this was a bit fortunate in that Oxhey Hall only had two players.

In Div Three, Lions have taken over the lead as they had been threatening to do for a few weeks. They had a comfortable 8-0 win vs. Quails. Richard Carter, Ricky Poplawski, and Stuart Cass, the Lions side. Meerkats drop to second spot, after dropping a point to Watling ‘D’, 6-2 the score. Very young Jamie Fisher was again unbeaten. Progress ‘C’ posted their second victory, with Ospreys the losers, 6-2 the score. James Weston the Progress star.

In the Premier Div, Cougars had a very good result when drawing with Fullerians, with a good all round team effort. There were easy wins for Bats and Aardvarks, vs. Dolphins, and Progress ‘B’ respectively, 8-0 both matches.

Results:

Premier Div: Bats vs. Dolphins 8-0; Aardvarks vs. Progress ‘B’ 8-0; Cougars vs. Fullerians 4-4.
Div One: Eagles vs. Watling ‘A’ 3-5; Huskies vs. Post Office 1-7; Gazelles vs. Falcons 2-6.
Div Two: Audit ‘A’ vs. Iguanas 4-4; Audit ‘B’ vs. Oxhey Hall 4-4.
Div Three: Lions vs. Quails 8-0; Watling ‘D’ vs. Meerkats 2-6; Ospreys vs. Progress ‘C’ 2-6.

I am missing quite a few results. Will all captains please make sure I am made aware of the results quickly, this enables me to keep the League tables up to date, which is for everyones benefit. Thank you.

Urban Progress 'A' take maximum against Abbots Langley!

Urban Progress 'A' continued their march at the top of the table with a 7-1 victory over Abbots Langley on the 16th Nov.

The Home team of Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle and Alan Thomas proved too strong for visitors Ken Stonebridge, Mick Lowens and Peter Groves. Ken Stonebridge picked up the only win for Abbots with a convincing win over Alan Thomas. The only 5 setter was Alan Thomas against Peter Groves which had it gone Abbots way would have netted them a point, but as it was alan picked up the 5th set and Urban Progress took all the points!

County Honours abound from local Watford players!!

On 29th Oct & 30th Oct Watford players Stuart Seaholme, Dennis Division.Robinson & Sally Bax were joined by Derek Balding from Ware to represented Hertfordshire O'60's at Milton Keynes in County Premier Division.a point so all to play for next time. First match vs Yorkshire we go down 7-3. Second match vs Kent and 5-5 draw. Last match vs Essex, last years winners and another 7-3 defeat. Just 1 point from 3 matches. Still there are at least 2 counties without a point so all to play for in the last matches again at Milton Keynes later in the season.

On the 12th & 13th Nov Glen Wilkes & Stuart Seaholme represented Hertfordshire O'40's in Division 1 playing at Wolverhampton. They were joined by Jimmy Walsh & Emma Rose. 8-2 win against Worcestershire, 4-6 defeat to Lincolnshire and finally a 5-5 draw against Cleveland leave them mid table. In January they play their final 4 matches at Milton Keynes.

Audit ‘A’ of Div Two lost their 100% record when Kangaroos, who have yet to win, visited them and shared the ‘spoils’. Mitchell Hyams of Kangaroos was unbeaten. At least the ‘A’ team did better than the ‘B’, Watling ‘C’ winning 8-0. Andrew Goldstein, Peter Meisel and Simon Blum, the winning team. Oxhey Hall and Iguanas also drew David Oram of Iguanas the star in this match.

In Div Three, Lions also lost their 100% when drawing with top team Meerkats who had young Jamie Fisher starring. Newts, a very young team, hang onto second place for another week, after an easy 8-0 win vs. Quails. Jake Henley, Fred Mummery and Matthew Barker the Newts team. Watling ‘D’ played two man Progress ‘C’, winning 5-3. They thought the match was a draw, but Progress had played the wrong order and one game was inadmissible.

In Div One, top team Eagles gained full points vs. Huskies, in a 7-1 win. Dave Sims and Ian Hamilton being unbeaten. Watling ‘B’ drew with their ‘A’ team and stay in second place. Andrew Meisel unbeaten for the ‘A’ team. Ishan Bairoliya was unbeaten for Falcons in their 6-2 victory vs. Hounds.

In the Premier Div, Progress ‘A’ returned to the top of the league after ‘thumping’ Aardvarks 7-1, and displacing them. Timor Kardar and Roger Pyle were unbeaten. Progress ‘A’ are now the only team with a 100% record, a very hard team to beat. Progress ‘B’ could not match the ‘A’ teams win, losing 3-5 to Bats, despite their player Zoltan Kulics being unbeaten. Abbots Langley, having a stronger side this season, overcame Fullerians 5-3, and leapfrog them in the tables.

Premier Division: Abbots Langley vs. Fullerians 5-3; Bats vs. Progress ‘B’ 5-3; Progress ‘A’ vs. Aardvarks 7-1.
Division One: Hounds vs. Falcons 2-6; Watling ‘A’ vs. Watling ‘B’ 4-4; Eagles vs. Huskies 7-1.
Division Two: Audit ‘B’ vs. Watling ‘C’ 0-8; Oxhey Hall vs. Iguanas 4-4; Audit ‘A’ vs. Kangaroos 4-4.
Division Three: Lions vs. Meerkats 4-4; Newts vs. Quails 8-0; Watling ‘D’ vs. Progress ‘C’ 5-3.

Watford players on County duty - 12th November

Saturday 12th November Roger Pyle and Chris Ogle were on County vets duty in St. Neots representing the county 3rd team. Although the organisation left a bit to be desired, the Herts team of Chris Ogle, Roger Pyle, David Langham and Faith Frankel took on first Essex 3 in the morning session and then Berkshire 2 in the afternoon. Herts picked up two wins, 6-4 against Essex and 7-3 against Berks... The match sheets are shown below for those interested... this put Herts once again in the pole position going into the second weekend where we should have our full team on parade!

Maria Ingles - New coaching co-ordinator for the Eastern region!

Our very own Maria Ingles who is playing div 3 in the Watford Table Tennis league has been appointed as the new Coaching Co-Ordinator for the Eastern Region. Maria's son Jordon is one of our very promising young players also making his name in the Watford League! Below the email from the ETTA and the duties that cover the role that Maria has now taken on.

I'm sure we would all like to congratulate Maria on her new position and wish her all the success in helping Table tennis to move forward. Well done Maria!

I am pleased to announce that Maria Ingles has accepted the role to become the new Coaching Coordinator for the Eastern Region. Maria has been very helpful since I started the role and will be a very good addition to the team. I hope you will all welcome Maria on board and the roles in which Maria will be working on can be seen attached.

Duties

Coach Education:
• Promotion of UKCC qualifications - highlight importance of and support the process.
• Promote UKCC courses and Coach Education Workshops.
• Collect money and attendance list to pass onto the regional coach.
• Assist in selection of appropriate education topics for Coach Education Workshops.

Regional Training/Development:
• Club visits to meet coaches/players.
• Contribute to a club/coach/player needs analysis.
• Attend regional coaching meetings to discuss future implementation plans.
• Investigate possible future regional venues.
• Talent scout for regional squads (Coordinated by Regional Coach).
• Regional training administration – letters at the start of the season.
• Booking of venues – together with the regional coach.
• Assist with coaching/management of regional training centres.
• Assistance with regional finance management.

Coaching Bursary Management:
• Liaison with RDM with regards to available bursaries.
• Receipt of regional bursary applications.

ETTA Awards & Butterfly Skills:
• Promote ETTA products/courses regionally.
• Inform regional staff of any requests.

Other duties may be required from time to time commensurate with the business of the ETTA.

NB. All Regional Coaching Coordinators must hold a UKCC coaching qualification by 1st January 2013.

Urban Progress 'A' take max points against nearest Rival!

On the back of a max points victory against 3rd placed Fullerians the week before Urban Progress 'A' put an even greater gap between them and their closest rivals in a top of the table Premier clash this week.

For the home side, unfortunately Alan Thomas had been called away to Nottingham on business for the day and was unable to get back in time, so Tibi Kadar agreed to play at short notice... Tibi is keen to get a few matches underway so that he can defend his title at the Watford championships later in the year and so understandably was anxious to get his campaign started this year... we are already a third way through the season and he had yet to play a game! The in-form Roger Pyle and Chris Ogle made up the home team side... For the visitors, Adam Johnson, Piotr Borkowski and Anthony Budden...

In a match which started off on the skew because the visiting team had a player arrive pretty late, the order of the games had to be switched around to accommodate hence the inevitable score card confusion and errors writing the results into the wrong spots!

It turned out to be a match which on paper looked far more impressive than it actually was, with highlights being Adam and Chris's 5 set thriller and Anthony Budden beating Chris Ogle yet again in a close fought encounter!

The home team romped home to a 7-1 victory taking maximum points and putting themselves 7 points clear at the top of the table... the race is on! Score card of events shown below :-
