Fighter of the Decade Manny Pacquiao has decided to fight Mexican legend Juan Manuel Marquez for a fourth time at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on December 8. Pacquiao’s adviser Michael Koncz told the Manila Standard that Pacquiao had chosen Marquez over a rematch with Timothy “Deseret Storm” Bradley, pointing out that “next to a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr a fight with Marquez would be the best.”

Koncz who was driving back to Los Angeles after finalizing details of an agreement with Top Rank promoter Bob Arum in Las Vegas said “you know how Manny is. He wants to entertain the fans. In his last fight with Marqauez which was close, some of the Mexican fans booed the decision. Manny cares for the Mexicans who have always supported him and he wants to bring them back with a great fight.”

Arum confirmed the December 8 Pacquiao vs Marquez 4 face off and indicated he will hopefully have the contracts signed by the end of the week. He said “this should be a good one.” Koncz said he had discussed the training schedule of Pacquiao with Hall-of-Fame trainer Freddie Roach who is in Las Vegas training Julio Cesar Chavez Jr for his huge title defense against Diamond Belt champion Sergio “Maravilla” Martinez on Saturday before a record-breaking crowd at the Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao who is scheduled to fly to Los Angeles on Friday for two stagings of his entertainment show telecast on GMA 7 appears to be engrossed in his congressional re-election bid, charity work and his role as a bible-toting preacher prompting Roach to tell Jenna Jay that Pacquiao “really needs to focus. It’s a very difficult fight style-wise for us.

He does give us problems but I think if Manny gets in the best shape he can , we will finally close the book on Marquez.” Pacquiao dropped Marquez three times in the opening round of their first encounter before the Mexican counter-punched his way to a split draw although an admitted scoring error by judge Burt Clements who scored the first round 10-7 instead of 10-6 as the two other judges did, cost Pacquiao the decision in a WBA/IBF featherweight title bout.

Pacquiao won a close rematch by a majority decision to grab Marquez’ WBC super featherweight title and then retained his WBO welterweight title in a hugely controversial split decision victory. Roach noted that Marquez who is trained by another Hal-of-Famer Ignacio “Nacho” Beristain “is very slick and he knows how to get Manny to move to his right hand and we just got to nullify that.

We just have to find a way to avoid that lead right hand. We have not found a way yet in three fights but we better get it done in this fight or we won’t win this one.” Strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza echoed Roach’s sentiments and said a Marquez fight “is not going to be easy. He stressed that Pacquiao “has to go back to the old ways of training, focus more on the other stuff” and train solely at the Wild Card Gym.

Current WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto is confident that his power and strength will be a major factor when he fights undefeated American star Floyd Mayweather. The Mayweather vs Cotto fight will be on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Cotto will defend his World Boxing Association (WBA) junior middleweight title against Mayweather, who will be fighting at the 154-pound weight division for the first time since 2007.

“There’s no doubt I have the power to win this fight. If anything, my power has strengthened,” Cotto said in a RingTV interview. “That will make the difference.”

Cotto also believes the weight will be a major factor since Mayweather has not fought at the 154-pound division for a long time, whereas he has gotten used to that weight.

“No one should forget that I am very comfortable at 154 pounds,” Cotto said. “That will be a huge asset going into this match.”

In Mayweather’s only other fight at junior middleweight, he defeated Oscar De La Hoya via split decision in May 2007. At the time, it was the biggest win of Mayweather’s career and solidified his status as a superstar boxer in the United States.

But Cotto is not fazed by his status as the underdog against Mayweather, one of the pound-for-pound kings of boxing.

“I know Mayweather fans are very insistent that he only wins. But Floyd hasn’t fought what he will be fighting come May 5,” Cotto said

“On that day, Floyd is going to fight the best opponent he has ever been in a ring with, and the fighter is me. I can’t wait for this one,” he added.

Mayweather disagrees that the weight division will play a role in their bout, however.

“I think with me it really don’t play a major factor, but with some fighters it does play a major factor, because some guys can push certain guys around,” Mayweather said.

“But you know me; I think my skills are on a different level from any other fighter, so when it’s all said and done, skills pay the bills... And I don’t really think weight is going to play a major key. I think it’s going to come down to the skills,” he added.

Many believes the May 5 junior middleweight contest between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto will not be as one-sided as many boxing fans think. The undefeated Mayweather is the favorite going to the Mayweather vs Cotto fight, even though he is fighting at the 154-pound weight class for the first time since 2007 and is technically the challenger to Cotto’s junior middleweight title.

In an interview with On The Ropes Boxing Radion, Richardson explained that the weight class, along with Cotto’s fighting spirit, will play significant roles in the match.

“You can’t just lock in on one-sided,” said Richardson, who has trained former world champions “Sugar” Shane Mosley and Bernard Hopkins. “The last time Floyd has been at this weight was probably his toughest contest.”

Richardson is referring to Mayweather’s May 2007 bout against Oscar De La Hoya, which he won via split decision. The respected trainer also called Cotto “a special kid.”

“Cotto’s a kid who has pretty much re-energized himself. You know, he felt like he went back and redeemed himself from the (Antonio) Margarito fight, and Cotto’s a special kid, too,” Richardson said.

Cotto’s career was at a crossroads when he lost to Filipino boxing icon Manny “Pacman” Pacquiao via a 12th round technical knockout in 2009.

He has since moved up in weight to the junior middleweight division and won three straight bouts, including a victory over Margarito last December. In the process, he avenged one of his two career losses.

“So, one-sided? I never count on that against champions, against guys who are true champions. You don’t see one-sided,” Richardson said.

"I've refereed both of them many times and I know their styles," he said. "I do know they both fight clean and that's what I'm expecting. A clean fight and believe it or not, I think that's what we are going to get is a clean fight. I don't foresee any problems that are going to develop. Their styles speak for themselves when they are in the ring."

Steward worked with Cotto for his first two fights in the junior middleweight division, which saw the Puerto Rican boxer defeat Yuri Foreman and Ricardo Mayorga. But Cotto replaced Steward with Cuban trainer Pedro Luis Diaz prior to his rematch against Antonio Margarito last December.

Cotto won the rematch against Margarito via a 10th round technical knockout, but Cotto did not do anything new in that fight.

I know in that last fight when he beat Margarito, he just simply was really using the same thing he did the first time. He was just out-speeding Margarito, because he's slow.

The fact that Margarito was getting to him at the end, and really had almost started duplicating the first fight, meant that he was going to have problems going down the stretch over those last two rounds.

Against Mayweather, Cotto will need a "much more defined game plan".

If Cotto fights the right fight, one of the keys is going to be a good jab and he's going to have to maintain his balance at all times," he said. "He cannot be fighting with his head down too far, and his elbows out, and his feet spread apart while he’s trying to bob and weave."

Floyd is too crafty for that and Floyd will systematically pick him apart. A lot of the intangibles favor Floyd.

I'm expecting Mayweather to put on a good show and "try and make a statement" against Cotto.

I have so much repsect for Floyd Mayweather for taking this fight, because he wants to do something big and spectacular. Since it wasn't (Manny) Pacquiao, to me the biggest and best fight he could have made, and maybe one of the riskiest, was Miguel Cotto.

Cotto ready for war vs Mayweather

WBA junior middleweight champion Miguel Cotto will be ready to go to war when he steps into the ring against undefeated American superstar Floyd Mayweather on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

This, according to his Cuban trainer, Pedro Diaz.

“Miguel is ready for war. He is ready for victory, and that is our goal,” Diaz said during Cotto’s open workout, as quoted by Boxing Scene.

“We had a great camp. Miguel is working really hard, and he is putting a lot of motivations and focus into every training session, which will be the key to win,” he added.

Diaz replaced Emanuel Steward as Cotto’s trainer prior to the Puerto Rican’s most recent bout, a technical knockout victory over Mexican boxer Antonio Margarito.

Cotto will defend his World Boxing Association junior middleweight belt in the fight, but is considered the underdog against the undefeated Mayweather.

This does not concern Cotto, however. “I am thinking of victory,” he said. “And after that, we will celebrate.”

“I feel that this is my moment. I feel great, and I am in my prime... I am motivated to fight anyone in boxing,” Cotto said.

“This is going to be mine and Mayweather’s next big chapters in our careers,” he added.

Puerto Rican boxing star Miguel Cotto is fine with random blood and urine testing for his junior middleweight bout against unbeaten American star Floyd Mayweather on May 5 in Las Vegas. Mayweather has demanded that all of his opponents undergo random blood and urine testing, with the United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) administering the tests.

In an interview with Boxing Scene, Cotto said he has no problems with the drug testing and believes it will keep the sport of boxing "clean."

"In sports, if it's something about skills, conditioning or preparation, you have to be clean. In all sports, you have to be clean," Cotto said.

"And if you can contribute to make the sport better and more clean, I'm not mad about that," he added.

Cotto said he agreed with Mayweather's demands for random blood and urine testing so he can contribute to the sport's image.

"I'm a sportsman, and all I want is a clean, more clean sport that the people can trust," he said. "People can sit in their homes and watch real fighters who are not using anything to have an advantage."”

Moreover, Cotto said he has already experienced drug testing when he competed in the Olympics.

"It's the same system used in the Olympics in 2000. It's a simple pinch," he said. "Four to six times during camp. It's not going to be bigger than a spoon of blood. It isn’t going to take anything out of me."

“This will be the kind of test that will motivate me to train harder. Miguel Cotto will fight hard. It will be a very exciting fight. On May 5th, it won’t be an ordinary day. We’re going to give people all around the world what they want to see,” Mayweather said.

Mayweather has won championships in five divisions: super featherweight, lightweight, super lightweight, welterweight and junior middleweight.

Though Pacquiao has agreed to all of Mayweather's drug-testing demands, the negotiations for the mega-fight fell apart anew after the American boxer refused to agree to a 50-50 revenue split.

Pacquiao has also filed a defamation case against Mayweather after the latter accused him of using performance-enhancing drugs.

Undefeated American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. promises to be aggressive when he challenges Puerto Rico's Miguel Cotto for the World Boxing Association junior middleweight belt on May 5 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It will only be the second time in his career that Mayweather fought above the welterweight division. He previously won the World Boxing Council junior middleweight title after beating Oscar De La Hoya via split decision in May 2007. Mayweather admitted that fighting at a higher weight class will be a “challenge” for him.

"Am I going to be in a very, very aggressive style? I believe so," Mayweather told Boxing Scene.

"I just have to see how the fight plays out, but I'm going to approach it in a very, very aggressive way and go out there and press the attack early," he added.

Mayweather is noted for his defensive skills, but he said he has become more offensive-minded, especially in his last fight against Victor Ortiz in September 2011.

"As you can see in my last fight, as each round went on, I started throwing more and more combinations because I feel that every fighter comes out strong the first, second and third round," he said. "But there's nine more."

Moreover, Mayweather noted that Cotto may become tentative against him because the Puerto Rican boxer has been knocked out twice: by Antonio Margarito and Manny Pacquiao.

"I feel like if a guy has hit the canvas before, it's in his mind that it can happen again," Mayweather said in a separate Boxing Scene report.

Mayweather will have to move up to junior middleweight division to fight Cotto, but the undefeated fighter is unconcerned about this.

"I feel that my hands are faster, I'm the better counter-puncher. I've shown that I have a great chin," he said.

"I don't have to go in the fight weighing 154-pounds. I'm a guy that's blessed with the ability to go up and down and beat the best fighters they have in the sport of boxing," Mayweather added.

It will be Mayweather's second time fighting at the junior middleweight division. In 2007, he defeated Oscar De La Hoya via split decision to win the World Boxing Council junior middleweight belt.

Unbeaten American boxer Floyd Mayweather Jr. once again fired off a series of tweets, this time singling out Top Rank chief executive officer Bob Arum, the promoter of his rival, Filipino boxing icon Manny "Pacman" Pacquiao.

In his first tweet, Mayweather (42-0) reiterated that he is "ready to fight Pacquiao 5/5/12."

"Bob Arum know the date can't change, I have my guarantee," he added.

Mayweather's adviser, Leonard Ellerbe, announced last year that the fighter has blocked off May 5 as the date for his ring return. This was in jeopardy for a while as Mayweather was sentenced to 90 days in jail following a domestic violence charge, but his jail time was put off so he can fulfill his fight obligations.

The unbeaten boxer then instructed Arum to "call (Richard) Schaefer and Al (Haymon) and stop lying to the public."

Schaefer is the chief executive officer of Golden Boy Promotions, while Haymon is one of Mayweather's advisers. Golden Boy has promoted all of Mayweather's fights following his May 2007 victory over Oscar de la Hoya.

Mayweather's instructions are seemingly in response to Arum's recent statements, wherein the Top Rank boss said he is "unsure" if Schaefer and Golden Boy will even be involved in the negotiations.

"Unlike Top Rank, that has a contract with Manny, we are involved. I don't know if Schaefer is involved," he said in a recent Boxing Scene interview.

Arum then said that he will only sit down and negotiate with an authorized representative from Team Mayweather, but that everything was ready in the Pacquiao camp.

"We're all set. Pacquiao and Top Rank are all set. I went to the Philippines and made sure of that," he said.

Juan Manuel Marquez insisted that he won his first 2 fights against Manny Pacquiao. Marquez made the statement during the Manila leg of their global press tour promoting their Pacquiao vs Marquez 3 fight in November 12 welterweight title fight.

“I won the first 2 fights… In 2004 and 2008,” he asserted.

This was his reply when asked if his career would be complete even without a win against Pacquiao. He, however, admitted being grateful to be given the chance to square off with the fighting congressman again.

“I feel very happy for the opportunity… I expect the best Manny Pacquiao for this fight,” said Marquez.

The two boxers will be fighting it out for the 3rd time at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. In 2004, Pacquiao scored 3 first round knockdowns against Marquez. The Mexican, however, was able to salvage a draw. Four years later, the Filipino champion edged the Mexican with a split decision.

The November 12 fight will take place at a 144-pound catchweight, 13 pounds higher than the 130-pound division they last fought in. Marquez is confident that he can handle the added weight on his frame, despite losing a 144-pound catchweight fight to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2009. He claimed that he lost to Mayweather because the latter ran and ran during their bout.

I really admire Ortiz courage to put his belt on the line just to prove something that Mayweather is just only a human being and can be defeated. Not only has Victor Ortiz got the tools he as youth on his side and Mayweather is now 34 years old and we still don't know the condition Mayweather is in because it's almost a year since he didn't fight.

It only shows that Victor Ortiz will not go down without a fight and if ever he will beat Floyd Mayweather and win their fight. As we all know that Victor Ortiz must fight beyond the level of Floyd Mayweather Jr. to win the Mayweather vs Ortiz contest. Victor Ortiz will bring the war to Floyd Mayweather

Mayweather vs Ortiz will face each other on September 17, 2011 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas. WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-2-2, 22 KO’s) has already come up with a strategy to try and beat undefeated Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0, 25 Ko’s) in their fight on September 17th at a still to be determined venue. Ortiz, 24, says he’s going to take the fight to Mayweather and try to turn it into a war. This no doubt has been attempted before, albeit with weaker and smaller fighters than Ortiz. Juan Manuel Marquez and Ricky Hatton both attempted to take the fight to Mayweather and were easily beaten. The southpaw Ortiz is bigger and stronger than those guys, so perhaps he can take Mayweather’s hard pot shots and keep firing back to get inside on Mayweather.

In an interview at the The Ring, Ortiz said “I’ll take him the same way I thought Oscar De La Hoya beat him, the way Jose Luis Castillo beat him, that’s take the war to his ass.” This would be more or less the same tactic that Ortiz used on beating former WBC welterweight champion Andre Berto by a 12 round decision in his last fight in April.

Ortiz went right at Berto and forced him to fight a long and protracted inside ward where Ortiz was eventually able to beat Berto, but not before being knocked down twice. To Ortiz’s credit, he was able to get up off the deck on two occasions and put Berto down twice as well, and eventually wear him down.
