Man United vs FC Porto

Federico Macheda will keep his place in Manchester United's squad for their Champions League quarter-final against FC Porto.

The 17-year-old scored the last-gasp winner to beat Aston Villa on his debut on Sunday and Sir Alex Ferguson does not intend to dump the Italian even though he has three senior players returning.

Wayne Rooney, Paul Scholes and Nemanja Vidic are all back from suspension, although Rio Ferdinand is unlikely to figure as he is still troubled by a groin injury.

Anderson and Dimitar Berbatov also miss out due various ailments.

Ferguson is likely to call on Park Ji-Sung, whose energy could be a useful weapon.

However, the majority of Ferguson's starting line-up will be asked to follow up from Sunday, ensuring there was only time for a massage and a few loosening exercises in training on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, Porto striker Lisandro Lopez, the second highest scorer in this year's Champions League, is back after missing Saturday's 3-1 win at Guimarães through suspension, and his strike partner Hulk returns to provide a physical presence upfront.

Villarreal vs Arsenal

Robin van Persie will miss Arsenal's Champions League quarter-final first leg against Villarreal with a groin injury.

However, Samir Nasri and Theo Walcott have been passed fit for the clash at El Madrigal after a virus and knee injury respectively.

Midfielder Andrey Arshavin is ineligible having played for Zenit St Petersburg during the group stages. Striker Eduardo (groin) and midfielder Abou Diaby (thigh) remain sidelined, while long-term absentee Tomas Rosicky continues his recovery.

Villarreal have injury problems of their own, with Spain winger Santi Cazorla set to miss the remainder of the season.

The influential 24-year-old fractured his fibula during his side's 3-0 defeat at Almeria.

Ruben Gracia (thigh) is in coach Manuel Pellegrini's line-up, while Turkey striker Nihat Kahveci is back to full fitness, but midfielder Bruno Sorriano is out.

Macheda hails dream day

Federico Macheda fired Man United back to the Premier League summit and declared it was the "best day of his life".

With Wayne Rooney suspended and Dimitar Berbatov injured, Sir Alex Ferguson turned to Macheda to help rescue the Red Devils' flagging title charge as they trailed Aston Villa midway through the second half at Old Trafford.

The young Italian brought more focus to United's attack. Then, after Cristiano Ronaldo had brought the champions level 10 minutes from time, Macheda curled home a brilliant injury-time winner to allow Ferguson's team to regain their one-point advantage over Liverpool.

"I have dreamt of a day like this," added Macheda.

"I just turned and shot and ran to my family. They are very proud of me."

Macheda was supposed to be returning to his native Italy to play a match but was called back by Ferguson, who wanted to put the 17-year-old on the bench for the first time.

"I was very surprised to get a chance but now I just want to keep going," said the former Lazio trainee, who moved to Old Trafford in 2007.

It looked like being a desperate afternoon for United, who had seen the early lead provided by Ronaldo wiped out by headers either side of the interval from John Carew and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

Villa were worthy of their lead but, as usual, Ferguson refused to accept defeat.

"In those situations, I gamble," said the Scot.

"Winning is the name of the game at this club.

"Risks are part of football and this club has been that way for a long time.

"I love to see that kind of adventure. Yes, there are times when we don't defend properly - and we didn't defend well today - but there is always a goal threat.

"There is always a chance we can win the match - and that is more exciting than anything."

A crestfallen Martin O'Neill felt his side were highly unfortunate, not least because referee Mike Riley missed a foul on Ashley Young in the build-up to Macheda's winner.

"The officials also got three offside decisions wrong when we were clean through," he complained.

"The thing is we can take great heart from the performance.

"But we are really disappointed with the result because I didn't feel we deserved that.

"You are never comfortable against United but I felt we were in commanding form and looked as though we could withstand anything."

United will depend on Tevez

Manchester United will place their faith in Carlos Tevez to help them survive a striker crisis against Aston Villa.

But only after they rub salt into the proud Argentina star's gaping wounds.

As Wayne Rooney is suspended and Dimitar Berbatov has been ruled out for a fortnight with the ankle injury he suffered at Fulham before the international break, Tevez is United's only fit senior forward.

Yet the 24-year-old has hardly had a trouble-free week himself.

Wednesday's World Cup rout in Bolivia equalled the worst defeat Argentina have ever suffered in a competitive match, with Tevez going through the agony along with Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano and Gabriel Heinze.

And after brooding on his fate on the flight back across the Atlantic, John O'Shea revealed Tevez could not expect much sympathy when he returned to Carrington.

"We will give Carlos a bit of stick," the defender said.

"Sometimes you get an arm around the shoulder but Patrice Evra and Park Ji-sung will not give him any sympathy. They will get stuck right into him.

"It was just an amazing result."

However, with Tevez needed in top form tomorrow, O'Shea wants his team-mate to channel his aggression in the right manner.

"We just hope he is angry and wants to take his frustration out on Villa," he said.

United could certainly do with Tevez on top form as they look to escape a slump that has seen them lose successive games against Liverpool and Fulham, eroding what appeared to be an impregnable position at the Premier League summit.

For most clubs, a two-week losing streak would be regarded as little more than a blip, but O'Shea is aware Manchester United are not 'most clubs'.

"Every defeat is a major crisis at this place, so two must be escalating towards a disaster," he observed.

"It is one of those things. We suffered one defeat, then things went against us at Fulham, with Paul Scholes getting sent off.

"But even with 10 men we should have been leading given the chances we had.

"Now we have to cope with a couple of suspensions and a couple of niggling injuries. But the manager has the squad to cope with these situations."

Apart from the notable exception of Tevez and Cristiano Ronaldo, whose Portugal side are still struggling to get into a qualification position, United's international contingent returned in buoyant mood.

The positive results have fuelled a belief the international break came at exactly the right time for the Red Devils.

"You could say it has been a good time to have a change of scenery," said O'Shea.

"Most of the players have come back happy at their results and now we must focus on a tough game against Aston Villa.

"They are going through a bit of a tough spell as well, so we hope home advantage counts for us on Sunday."

As United were seven points in front with a game in hand at one stage, heading into the weekend fixtures a single point and match in front of their nearest rivals is nowhere near as comfortable.

Yet, as O'Shea points out, rather than worry about the lost points, it would be better to focus on the ones United have gained.

"We are happy with the position we are in," he said.

"The rest of the teams like to be where we are. If we look after ourselves I am sure we will be OK."

Lamps and Terry fear Shearer

Chelsea team-mates Frank Lampard and John Terry confess taming Newcastle on the return of Alan Shearer will be tough.

Shearer has agreed to take over as Magpies manager for the remaining eight games of the season as the club battle Premier League relegation.

The St James' Park legend, who is set to face the media in a press conference at 1430 GMT, will be in the hot-seat for the first time on Saturday when third-placed Chelsea arrive.

And Lampard - who was a part of the Chelsea side that played Manchester City after the arrival of Robinho in September - expects Shearer to have a significant impact upon spirits on Tyneside.

When asked how difficult a fixture the trip to the North East now represents, Lampard told Sky Sports News: "A lot harder.

"You can imagine the atmosphere up there. Alan Shearer is a God, and quite rightly so. He will get the fans going and the players going.

"Unfortunately for us it seems to happen quite a bit. We had to play Manchester City when they had just signed Robinho.

"We have to react to the atmosphere and be on top of our game to get a result."

Chelsea captain Terry is also expecting a fierce match as the high-flying Blues continue to chase the title.

"He is Newcastle isn't he," Terry said. "So it will give them a big lift. It is down to us to go there.

"The title race is not over yet so we will be going there to upset them."

Fergie wary of Barcelona

Sir Alex Ferguson believes a refocused Barca pose the biggest threat to Man United's hopes of winning the Champions League.

English sides have once again dominated the world's premier club competition this season, with United one of four teams from the Barclays Premier League to reach the quarter-finals - along with Liverpool, Arsenal and Chelsea.

It is the Red Devils' bitter rivals, Liverpool, who have been pinpointed as the team in form following their 5-0 aggregate mauling of Spanish giants Real Madrid in the last 16.

However, despite his team's 4-1 defeat at the hands of Rafael Benitez's Reds earlier this month, Ferguson insists it is Barcelona - who United cannot meet until May's final - who are the real class of the field.

"Barcelona are the form team, they have been terrific this season and everyone is taking notice of them," he said.

"Their first-half performance against Lyon in the second leg of the first knock-out round (which they won 5-2 at the Nou Camp) was absolutely brilliant - they were four up in no time.

"They can be a threat to anybody and are quite rightly one of the favourites. The English teams have proven the strength of the Premier League in recent years.

"Last season we had three in the semi-finals and two in the final, the previous year there were three in the semis and Liverpool made it to the final.

"But we have to recognise that our threats don't just come from England, the big one will come from Barcelona."

The Catalans won the Champions League in 2006 under the guidance of Dutch coach Frank Rijkaard, who developed a side renowned for their offensive brilliance.

A recent, brilliant 6-0 mauling of Malaga in La Liga showed that facet of their play remains intact, but Ferguson believes it is the new-found defensive solidity engendered by current boss Pep Guardiola which has taken them to a new level.

"I'm not sure they have improved a lot from when we played them last season but they have had a better defensive record since Guardiola took over as coach last year," Ferguson told Inside United.

"There has maybe been a bit more concentration on defending than there had been in previous times. That's not a criticism of Frank Rijkaard, I just think Guardiola has brought in the awareness that defending is just as important as attacking.

"Gerard Pique, for instance, left us to go back there and has done really well for them. We always knew of his abilities - good talent, mobility and a winning mentality - so I think he's improved them.

"They got off to a great start to the season and it wasn't until January that they hit a blip and that happens to everyone. They're over that now, so they'll be the threat."

Chelsea launch search for Asian Soccer Star

Chelsea Football Club is launching a search for young Asian football stars of the future.

The club has teamed up with the FA, Kick it Out and the Asian Media Group to launch the 'Search for an Asian Soccer Star' and will be holding open trials for youngsters from Asian backgrounds during the May Bank Holiday with the most talented players being offered a three-day residential trial at the club's world class Academy.

The Search for an Asian Star event will take place on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th May at Chelsea's training ground in Cobham for players in the Under 12,13 and 14 age groups and will be open to London and South-East based players from Indian, Pakistani, Sri Lankan and Bangladeshi backgrounds.

Participants will be judged on a series of matches and tests specifically designed and used by the Chelsea Academy to demonstrate their speed, skills and ability.

NO BARRIER

The winners from each age group will be offered an initial three-day trial at the Chelsea Academy and any player meeting the required standards will be offered the chance to join some of the country's most talented young players in the Chelsea youth system.

"We realise that there is a lack of representation of players from Asian backgrounds within the game and we hope that the competition will help inspire Asian youngsters," said former Chelsea and England star Graeme Le Saux.

"We want to show that race is no barrier to joining our club and that opportunities for Asian players do exist. We are proud of the religious and racial diversity at Chelsea and it is important that all clubs share our ambition that players should only be judged on their talent and their potential," he added.

With two young British Asian players already at the club, Chelsea would like to see a further injection of Asian talent at all levels of the game. To achieve this aim Chelsea will also be inviting managers, coaches and scouts from clubs at all levels of the game to identify talented youngsters and information will also be on hand for Asian players to find clubs in their area.

Piara Power, Director of Kick it Out, welcomed the initiative: "Kick it Out is delighted to support this great programme. I hope that the Search for an Asian Soccer Star project will help inspire Asian players to take their involvement further at all levels of the game. For a leading club like Chelsea to provide such fantastic opportunities for Asian players shows they are taking the issues facing Asian participation seriously.''

SMASH PREJUDICE

Managing Editor of the Asian Media Group Kalpesh Solanki said: "It is great to be involved in this innovative and forward-thinking project with Chelsea. We feel there is the talent within the Asian community but it has not been given the appropriate high-profile support and encouragement that is needed. Chelsea have taken a huge step forward in this regard and shown what can be done when there is a will for change at the very highest club level. The club management, like us, recognise that a diversity on the field helps smash prejudice and inspires a future generation."

Zesh Rehman, the first British Asian player to play at all levels of the professional game said: "I think clubs need to take a more active role and engage with their communities and I think it's a great project. Chelsea are a Premier League club with a massive profile across the world I am sure other clubs can look at that and use it as a template for future reference."

The FA's Consultant in Race Equality Brendon Batson underlined the FA's support for the scheme: "The FA are delighted to offer our support to the Search for an Asian Soccer Star initiative. For a club like Chelsea to offer these opportunities demonstrates their commitment to breaking down the barriers between the game and the Asian Community and mirrors the ambition of the FA that football is representative of all our communities."

Asian Football Network Manager Kuljit Randhawa said: "The Asian Football Network is pleased to offer its full support to Chelsea FC's Asian Star Project. This initiative provides a unique opportunity to highlight the wealth of untapped talent that exists in the South Asian footballing community."

Happy Gerrard wants to sign for life

Steven Gerrard revealed he is happier now than at any other stage of his career and is ready to sign a new contract.

The Reds skipper is looking to cap an amazing fortnight by helping England overcome Slovakia in a friendly at Wembley on Saturday before the crucial World Cup qualifier against the Ukraine on April 1 as Fabio Capello's team look to maintain their 100% start to Group Six.

He could hardly be in a more confident mood.

Having helped dump Real Madrid out of the Champions League, beaten Manchester United at Old Trafford and score a hat-trick in the five-goal hammering of Aston Villa on Sunday, Gerrard suddenly finds himself leading a team with realistic ambitions of winning the Barclays Premier League.

It is a far cry from the dark days when it seemed Liverpool would never threaten at the top end of the table and joining Chelsea looked like a far more attractive option.

"I have never been happier throughout my whole career than I am at the moment," Gerrard said.

"I have two years left on my contract and if there was a chance to extend it, I am sure I would.

"I am playing in a top team, with world-class players and I believe in the manager. Going forward, I am sure we can be successful."

The relationship with Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez is the pivotal factor.

There was a time when Gerrard just did not understand the Spaniard. Played out of position on the right side of midfield in a team that lacked direction and drive, it was not so much a meeting of minds but a pair of heads hammering against different sides of the same brick wall.

Gerrard accepts there was an element of immaturity on his part.

"Maybe when I was a bit selfish when I was younger," he reflected.

"I used to think of myself a bit too much when he was playing me out of position.

"I should have taken a deep breath and realised it was for the team.

"But, at the moment, he is playing me in my favourite position, I am captain and we are winning. Our relationship has got stronger as time has gone by.

"For years and years I have moaned about not being involved in a title race and being far away from the others.

"At the moment, I am playing in a team that's capable of beating anyone in the league."

Yet Gerrard's exceptional recent form has just brought more discussion with England about his best position.

The subject of his apparent inability to play alongside Frank Lampard in the same central midfield engine room became tiresome for Gerrard a long time ago.

But it is an inescapable fact that the 28-year-old's current explosion of form has come as a second striker, operating behind Fernando Torres, rather than in the deeper role he is more usually associated with.

"I am loving it, which is why you are seeing the best of me," said Gerrard.

"I would love nothing better than to be given the chance to play there for England to try to find that form."

Such a move by Capello would come at a cost to Wayne Rooney, who has previously been thought of as an automatic choice in the deeper attacking slot.

"Wayne Rooney can play anywhere," was Gerrard's instant reaction when the potential problem was pointed out.

As Gerrard, David Beckham and Emile Heskey played little part in training today and Peter Crouch was sent for a precautionary scan on a calf injury, it is highly possible Capello will be spared the task of solving the puzzling dilemma on Saturday.

In Belarus last October, Capello chose to start with Gerrard on the left, where Rooney has been slotted in by Sir Alex Ferguson over the years.

It is a non-position in a sense, as the occupant is given licence to roam.

"The manager has explained clearly that he doesn't want me as an out-and-out left winger," said Gerrard.

"He wants me to be free and to go into places where I can cause problems for defenders. It's only a starting position and I do feel I can be dangerous there."

Gerrard is keen to transfer his club form to England as, if Liverpool do go on to end their 19-year league championship drought in May, his international ambitions would be the ones with the biggest gap to fill.

"I am desperate to win something with England," he said.

"When we have been knocked out of tournaments, the hurt and pain is exactly the same as when you don't achieve something with your club.

"The challenge now is to get qualification sorted and then go into the tournament full of confidence.

"Winning trophies as a football player is what it's all about.

"I'm sure this country would be an unbelievable place to be if we were to achieve something."

Van Persie: We are unbeatable!

Robin van Persie feels Arsenal are "unbeatable" at present after going 16 Premier League games without defeat.

The Gunners have turned their season around in recent weeks after it looked as though they may be struggling to qualify for the Champions League.

But after overhauling Aston Villa in the race for fourth spot Arsene Wenger's men can now look forward to the run-in with an FA Cup semi-final against Chelsea and a quarter-final Champions League showdown with Villarreal.

The Gunners may be too far behind in the title race, they are 10 points adrift of leaders Manchester United, but with a host of their star players set to make a return from injury in the coming weeks the future looks rosy for the Gunners.

"I feel we are unbeatable. I go out there thinking we can win every game," said van Persie.

"Even when Newcastle drew level on Saturday, I never thought 'Oh no we are not going to win'.

"I looked at the time and saw we had 30 minutes left and I was convinced we would win.

"I still look back at the dropped points from earlier in the season and it hurts.

"We are 10 points behind United and six behind Chelsea because we lost some silly points against teams we shouldn't have."
