Anchorage AK’s Flattop Overflow Parking to be completed soon

Delays have put the expected opening of the Flattop overflow parking lot to sometime before the summer solstice this weekend, according to a recent report from KTUU.com. The snow dumps in May delayed the completion of the project, but Chugach State Park Superintendent, Tom Harrison, anticipates that the park will have more details at the end of the week; the new overflow lot will still need paving once it has opened, which should be done in August. This parking lot expansion project at Glen Alps comes as a solution to the problem that the park has been facing to accompany the amount of visitors that arrive on a regular basis. Until the lot is available, park officials have suggested arriving earlier in the day, carpooling, taking the Flattop mountain shuttle, or parking on Upper Huffman for those that don’t mind walking.

Anchorage AK Kicks off First “Color Run,” June 15th

This June 15th marks the inaugural year for Anchorage’s new, unique paint race dubbed “The Color Run.” This colorful experience encourages people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and speeds to participate as the focus is more on ‘color fun’ than on speed. As a five-kilometer, un-timed race, The Color Run will involve thousands of participants who will be covered from head to toe in different colors at each kilometer mark; the ‘finale’ of the run happens at the finish line when a gigantic ‘color festival’ occurs with more colored powder raining down on participants. Registration for the event is between $45-50 and those wishing to participate as a volunteer ‘color thrower’ may still do so. The Color Run will be this Saturday, on June 15th, with the start window opening at 8 am at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage AK. Funds raised by the event will go to benefit the Boys & Girls Club in Alaska.

Anchorage AK Sees Improvements to Parks and Trails this summer

With more than 35 projects planned this summer, Anchorage parks and trails will be getting a new look. The city’s Parks and Recreation Department have many improvement projects currently in progress which are designed to give community members a better place to gather and enjoy the great outdoors. Anchorage Park Superintendent Holly Spoth-Torres reported that $6 million will go into these improvements, some of which should be finished before the end of the summer. Places undergoing renovations include Cuddy Midtown Park that will have a new playground for jumping and climbing, Veterans Memorial Park in downtown, and Centennial Park campgrounds. Spoth-Torres indicated that these new improvements are based on community feedback to make the use of parks and trails a better experience for all ages.

AK’s Planned South Denali Visitors Center moves forward

The planned South Denali Visitors Center took a financial step forward when the Legislature included $7 million for funding the project in its latest capital budget. This visitors center would be located outside the park boundary and be developed in partnership with the Mat-Su Borough and National Parks Service. Plans for the center include two tiers with the first close to Parks Highway and the second on top of a ridge with great mountain views; so far only surveying and data collection work has been done with actual construction upcoming in the near future. The visitors center will feature interpretive media highlighting natural sciences and history, as well as interpretive trails for long and short hikes, and a walk-in campground. Once constructed and open for the public it is estimated to bring in between $17.8 million to $44.8 million per year in tourism related revenue.

Anchorage AK’s Run for Women scheduled for June 8th

Registration is still open for Alaska’s Run for Women, an event designed to raise awareness of breast cancer and scheduled for Saturday morning, June 8th. The 2013 Alaska Run for Women will kick off 8 am at the Sullivan Arena in Anchorage AK and although there is no set registration fee, the minimum donation of $20 is respectfully requested to cover coastal trail fees and race expenses. Those hoping to participate in the non-timed event may register online until 5 pm on Friday or in-person at the Mulcahy Stadium on Saturday from 6:45 to 8 am. Last year’s Alaska Run from Women was a huge success with more than 7,000 participants and over $250,000 raised for the awareness of breast cancer and women’s health. So come out and participate to make this year’s event even more successful!

Anchorage AK’s Salmon Derby Starts June 7th

Anchorage’s downtown king salmon derby dubbed “The Slam’n Salm’n Derby” starts Friday, June 7th, and runs through Sunday, June 16th; this popular annual event is a fundraiser for the Downtown Soup Kitchen. Prizes will be given for categories including the heaviest fish overall, the 49th king salmon entered in the Derby, and the heaviest fish weighed in by an active duty military angler. Also, Derby officials have tagged salmon with prizes ranging from $100 to $1000. The weather forecast for this weekend and next week is looking favorable for anglers, with fishable tides of about 28 feet morning and night for this weekend, according to a recent article at adn.com.
