Palmer AK’s Machetanz Arts Festival is just around the corner on June 1st at Mat Su College! There is still time to register for classes from now until May 29th, with half day classes for $30 and full day classes for $55. Choose from an array of stimulating art classes including Athabascan style beadwork (taught by the talented, world renowned June Pardue), mosaic, movement and drumming, printmaking, silk painting, digital photography, and mixed media. Also available are more traditional types of art including drawing, oil painting, pastels, and watercolor. All classes are given by experienced local artists and instructors and will be offered on June 1st at varying times of the day. Some workshops require additional supplies, so be sure to check out the class descriptions before signing up atmatsu.alaska.edu.

AK’s Valdez Halibut Derby underway from now until Sept 1st

The Valdez Halibut Derby is underway from now until September 1st in Alaska! This annual competition offers both weekly winners throughout the season and final overall winners when the derby is complete. The first place overall winner receives $15,000, and everyone who buys a ticket will be entered into a drawing for a new truck; derby tickets are $10 a day or $50 for the season and must be purchased before heading out on the water. Each day weigh-ins will be from 3-8 pm at the derby shack for anglers to submit information on their biggest catch for the competition. There will also be two special events including the Kid’s Pink Salmon Derby on July 20th and Women’s Silver Salmon Sisterhood Derby on August 10th. Justin Hoppe, who hooked a 97 pound fish last Saturday in Prince William Sound, is currently the early lead, with Shawn Shipman ranking second with his 70.4 pound halibut.

Anchorage AK’s Junior Master Gardener Summer Camp Registration now open

Want to get your kids involved in a summer camp in the Anchorage AK area? The Junior Master Gardener Summer Camp is the perfect place for children ages 7-11 to learn through hands-on activities all summer long. This unique camp is 1 day a week for 8 weeks with a morning (9am-12pm) or afternoon (1pm-4pm) session option. Children will be taught botany, nutrition, soil science, gardening and ecology in outdoor experientially-oriented classes designed to ignite their flames of interest in nature. Alaska’s Unemployment Rate Sees Decrease again

Alaska’s unemployment rate has seen a decrease again, putting it 1.5 percent below the 7.5 percent national rate, according to a recent article on ADN.com. The preliminary number is 6 percent for last month, with this marking the lowest the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate has been in Alaska since June of 2007. Compared to data from last year around this time, Alaska’s unemployment rate was at 6.2 percent for March and 7 percent for April. Caroline Schultz, a state labor department economist, reported that although the unemployment rate is not likely to continue to fall much further, it does indicate that Alaska has fully recovered from the recession of several years ago in terms of its employment sector.

Charity Golf Tournament on June 1st in Wasilla AK

Wasilla AK’s Settlers Bay Golf Course will be holding the 21st Annual FISH Charity Golf Tournament on Saturday, June 1st with all proceeds going to charity. FISH (Fellowship in Serving Humanity) is a charity that has been feeding hungry neighbors for 45 years in the Anchorage AK area including delivering emergency food supplies directly to doors. The Golf tournament will begin at 9:00 am and there is a $150 fee for single players and a $600 fee for foursome teams in order to participate; inexperienced players including teens and adults are welcome in this scramble format tournament. Entry fee includes a cart and lunch. The tournament will also involve games and great prizes including a custom set of irons from Full Swing Golf of Alaska. So save the date, June 1st, for the 21st Annual FISH Charity Golf Tournament and enjoy a day with family and friends for a great cause.

Anchorage AK’s Annual Motorcycle Training Courses now available

Those looking to learn some tips on motorcycle safety will want to check out Anchorage AK’s Annual Motorcycle Training Courses. As Alaska has the highest number of registered motorcyclists per capita in the nation, May is dubbed motorcycle safety and awareness month with courses available for beginners. The course is offered by Alaska Bikers Advocating Training and Education (A.B.A.T.E) and they have trained over 16,000 people over the years since 1991. Students taking the three-day course will have written and riding instructions and take the DMV test; once riders have passed they will be given a completion card that allows them to obtain the motorcycle endorsement through the DMV. A.B.A.T.E’s class schedule can be found online and registering early is a good idea as classes tend to fill up quickly.

Anchorage AK’s “Captain Cook Walking Tours” run from now until September

This month marks the beginning of the Captain Cook Walking Tour which runs from now until September. The tour is given twice daily during the summer, rain or shine, from 11 am -12 pm, and 2:30 pm to 3:30 pm. Simply come on down to the Anchorage Alaska Public Lands Information Center at the specified times and join National Park Rangers as they tell stories of early explorers who came to Alaska. The tour features information about England’s Captain James Cook and his voyage to the arctic in search of the ‘Northwest Passage’ as well as discussion of early Alaska Natives, symbols used in totem poles, and much more. It is a walking tour so you will be strolling the streets of beautiful downtown Anchorage to various important historical sites. The tour is free of charge and a great way to spend the afternoon in downtown Anchorage.
