Dead or Arrested by Breakfast

Maurice Clemmons, the 37-year-old Tacoma man being sought for questioning in the killing of four Lakewood police officers this morning, has a long criminal record punctuated by violence, erratic behavior and concerns about his mental health.

Nine years ago, then-Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee granted clemency to Clemmons, commuting his lengthy prison sentence over the protests of prosecutors.

"This is the day I've been dreading for a long time," Larry Jegley, prosecuting attorney for Arkansas' Pulaski County said Sunday night when informed that Clemmons was being sought in connection to the killings.

Clemmons' criminal history includes at least five felony convictions in Arkansas and at least eight felony charges in Washington. The record also stands out for the number of times he has been released from custody despite questions about the danger he posed.

Clemmons had been in jail in Pierce County for the past several months on a pending charge of second-degree rape of a child.

He was released from custody just six days ago, even though he was wanted on a fugitive warrant out of Arkansas and was staring at eight felony charges in all out of Washington state.  Maurice Clemmons Sought for Questioning

"A man with an extensive criminal past - whose 95-year prison sentence was commuted in Arkansas nearly a decade ago - was being sought Sunday as a "person of interest" in a deadly ambush on four police officers who were gunned down inside a coffee shop."

The four officers were killed at about 8:15 a.m. by a scruffy-looking man who walked into a coffee shop and opened fire. The officers — three men and one woman — were found dead by deputies who arrived at Forza Coffee at 11401 Steele St. S., said Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer.

Troyer said the investigation into the shootings indicate that the gunman "flat-out executed" two of the officers. One officer then stood up, tried to go for the gunman and was shot, Troyer said.

New information released from Pierce County sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer said:

The gunman walked into Forza, past the officers and up to the counter as if he was going to place an order. He opened up his coat. The barista turned and ran.

The gunman then turned around and opened fire on the officers.

About 250 tips have come in on the case.

The four officers had previously worked for other agencies. One of the four had worked for the Pierce County Sheriff's Office. The reward has been increased to $100,000.  Updates at TNT

The owner of Forza Coffee, where four Lakewood police officers were slain this morning, issued the following statement:

The entire Forza team of owners, employees, families and vendors wishes to pass along deep compassion and loss for the four Lakewood police officers who lost their lives this morning. The coldblooded ambush that took place at the Steele Street Forza Coffee House in Parkland, WA at 8:15 a.m. today.

"As a retired police officer," said Brad Carpenter, chief executive officer of Forza Coffee, "this senseless shooting hits extremely close to home to me. These officers put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe, and this crime cuts deep into the heart of the entire Forza family."

Having impacted Forza at a corporate and local level, immediate action will be taken to establish a donation area at each coffee house.

"It is Forza's goal to help the families of those who lost their lives during this difficult holiday season, and into the new year as they struggle to reconstruct their lives in the year ahead," said Rich Jennings, Forza owner.

Our prayers go out to the family and friends of these officers in the face of this horrific tragedy.

The Lakewood Police department plans to escort the bodies of their four slain officers to the Pierce County Medical Examiner's office in an extensive motorcade within two hours. Officers from other jurisdictions will cover the duties of Lakewood officers taking part in the motorcade, said Pierce County Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer. Crime scene investigators continue to analyze the crime scene, and will work into the evening to reconstruct the shooting, Troyer said. Detectives think the shooter may be on foot and still in the Parkland neighborhood where the shooting took place, Troyer said.

A friend of mine and I were discussing secession the other day -- the fact that some people want to secede from the Union, particularly now that Obama's in the White House.  Secession is not necessarily a left or right thing.  There are folks from both sides who feel that way.  But, Secession is like the Silent Treatment.  Feeds the self-importance; doesn't solve the problem.

We conservatives tend to be principled.  Whether an individual conservative believes in a higher power, or "objectivism", he or she typically believes that character is the process of improving one's relation to the way things are -- to truth.   A "progressive" is someone who wholeheartedly believes the other sonofabitch must change.  This is why "liberals" consistently screw that up: "You're trying to control what goes on in the bedroom!", they shriek, school girls that they are.  I got news for you.  Most conservatives I know are pretty matter of fact about sex.   Some of us old conservatives are even lady's men -- more European in taste than the girly man "liberal."  Strong lovers are charismatic because they're not trying to change anyone.  They feed off an inner vitality no "liberal" I've ever seen has because "liberals" are running around making sure you're not driving over the speed limit.  The freaks putting on "gay" parades are people who are confident you need to change. It's a consistent pattern.

Unfortunately -- or fortunately, if you have my perspective -- neither side has a monopoly on evil.  I've seen prosecutors and cops in my lifetime whose lord and savior is Satan, and I've known Republican operatives who are real trash.  I never assume my side has a monopoly on sweetness.  25 years in the Biz has taught me to deal with human nature, not fairy tales.

The secret of America's success isn't the "faction."  It's limited government.  Contrary to what "liberals" strenuously believe, limited government doesn't promote evil.  It limits the damage factions can do.  The fact that "liberals" can't get that means their IQ never goes much higher than 70 or so.

Andrew Thomas has a little piece in today's American Thinker called The Pathology of Evil in Politics.  I wish more people would try to understand this: positions of authority attract skilled charlatans, sociopaths, and gamers.  It's just a fact of life.  Asking these folks to solve health care "problems" is like inviting the pedophile over to babysit the kids.  It's not just politicians, per se.  All positions of authority attract amateurs with big schemes.

And then there's the good old Left, of which David Horowitz says:

These guys, like Ed Begley, are malicious sacks of shit.  Secession won't cure the problem.  Destiny, History, Providence, Kismet . . . . the forces of Karma will remove these turds from the lawn.  But at what cost to those of us who are principled and don't need to "change" anyone else?
