There are some people who say that you need to join a group, have a fitness center membership, or take exercise classes to be able to be successful at becoming fit. This works very well for some, but for others it becomes a deterrent to becoming fit. For those people who can’t get out of the house to workout, there are many benefits to working out at home.

The benefits of working out at home include the following:

Being able to work out any time of day without having to plan it in

Working out as opportunities arise (like nap time for the children)

The costs are low to work out at home, minimal if any, equipment is needed

Working out at home is very convenient

Children and partner can easily join in with the workout

No travel costs or time spent traveling

Current caregivers are readily available

There are no membership or class costs

Workouts can be flexible in time and length

Groups of people who usually benefit from working out at home include the following:

Parents-especially parents with small children, it can be hard to get out regularly to exercise to begin with, but add having to find child care, travel, costs, and time involved, it can keep a parent from becoming fit.

Disabled-many disabled have problems getting transportation arranged and have limited budgets, so they are unable to regularly leave the home and go to a gym to become fit. In addition, the person accompanying them will need to have the time to go as well.

Elderly-for those who are no longer driving, it can be challenging to leave the home to get fit. Like the disabled, they may also need someone to accompany them.

Anyone living in remote locations-when the closest gym is a couple hours away, becoming fit outside of the home is just not an option.

Working out at home can be as simple as incorporating an exercise routine that can be done in the living room or a workout room can be created with fitness equipment and machines. The latter increases the cost, but both are very convenient. Using items around the house like plastic jugs filled with water, step stools, chairs, and counters can provide a good workout without any added expense.

For the disabled and elderly it is best to consult with the primary healthcare provider regarding a fitness program at home. The caregiver who is assisting the disabled or elderly person may need training to reduce the risk of injury for the person getting fit. There are many exercises, stretches, and strengthening routines that can be done from home. Most ambulatory people are healthy enough to walk and this can be included in most fitness programs for the disabled and the elderly.

Walking not only burns calories, firms up muscles, and strengthens while having all the benefits of working out at home; it gets you out of the house. One of the disadvantages to working out at home is not getting out of the house, which can add to stress. This can cause an at home workout program to fail. Getting out of the house to walk will reduce stress while increasing fitness and burning calories. Unlike other ways to become fit, walking can be done with someone else and the time can be used to not only strengthen muscles, but also to strengthen relationships. Walking provides uninterrupted time together, just be sure to turn the cell phone off!

To make the most of every step, many people are buying fitness shoes like Sketchers and StepGym shoes. To find out more about the benefits of wearing a fitness shoe while walking, go to StepGym.com.

Many people have heard of health shoes, but don’t know what they are and they are asking the question, “What is a health shoe?” A health shoe contributes to general health. This doesn’t mean your feet will absorb some magical supplement that will make you healthy when you wear a health shoe. What it does mean is that when you wear a health shoe, it will contribute to you being healthier. Health shoes are also known as fitness shoes and walking shoes.

Now that you know what a health shoe is, you probably want to know how it contributes to your health. First of all, a health shoe won’t contribute to your health if you aren’t walking, so the shoe must be worn walking. When you walk in a traditional gym shoe or walking shoe, it will provide many benefits like the following:

Release of beneficial hormones that contribute to a feeling of well being and relaxation

Burning calories, especially with power walking

Firming and strengthening of lower extremities’ muscles and core body muscles

Stretching of muscles and ligaments

Cardiovascular workout if the walk is vigorous and fast paced

The advantages of a health shoe (fitness shoe) is that it does all the above but only better. Due to the scientific design of a health shoe, it stimulates the muscles of the thigh, buttocks, back, stomach, and calves to all work harder just by walking. Each step counts in a health shoe. When muscles have to work harder, especially a large muscle like the thigh muscle, more calories are burned than when they are not working as hard.

What is it about a health shoe that makes each step so efficient? It is the design of the health shoe. A health shoe has a sole that is curved and ergonomically designed. This design improves posture so that the back is strengthened. The steps stimulate the muscles in the buttocks so that it is firmed and lifted. Calves are defined faster because of the tension and resistance that is created when walking in a health shoe. The soft sole reduces the impact on the knees, so it is more comfortable to walk. Without the strain on knees, it is easier to stick with a walking program and to lengthen walks.

Many muscular pains are relieved when wearing a health shoe for walking. There may be some initial muscle soreness because new muscles will be used, but that will pass as fitness is increased.

Health shoes are becoming more popular because fitness is improved without changing the daily routine. Since a fitness (health) shoe can be worn anytime, it makes it convenient to get in better shape and improve health. The times that a health shoe can be worn includes the following:

Shopping for groceries, clothes, household items, etc.

Walking the dog

At work if the dress code allows athletic styled shoes

Taking walks alone or with friends and family

Around the house doing daily chores

Women tend to buy and wear fitness shoes more often than men, but the men buying fitness shoes is increasing as they learn what a health shoe is and what it can do to increase fitness and tone without changes in daily routine.

Women buy health shoes like the StepGym shoe because it’s affordable and well and it improves health. They like incorporating an exercise that’s easy into their daily routine.

No matter how new and wonderful a weight loss strategy is, none of them are going to show you results overnight that will last. Many quick weight loss supplements, pills, and programs simply cause you to drop water weight and may increased bowl elimination, which will also result in weight loss. This type of weight loss will have fast and dramatic results on the scale, but often the weight returns as fast as it disappears. A weight loss program that promotes slow and consistent weight loss will be more likely to be successful in keeping weight off. Some of the best new ways to loose weight beyond basic calorie counting and exercising includes the following:

Eat foods high in fiber and water

Foods that are high in fiber and water are categorized as low-density foods. To some, this may not be a new way to loose weight, but to others eating low-density food is one of the best new ways to loose weight. It is recommended to increase this type of food because it is lower in calories while being more filling. Less food is eaten when a person isn’t hungry. Some low-density foods include the following:

Fruits-high in water, high in fiber, low in calories

Vegetables-high in water, high in fiber, low in calories

Whole grains-high in fiber, low in calories, slow to digest

Protein-low fat, low calories

Dairy-low fat, low calories

Choosing low-density foods is about ratio; you want foods that are high in fiber and water with a low calorie count.

Eat monounsaturated fats

It may seem like eating fats will make you fat, but that is not the case when it comes to monounsaturated fats. Increasing monounsaturated fats is one of the best new ways to loose weight. Belly fat is the bothersome fat that intertwines around the internal organs. This fat type is called visceral. It is believed that consuming monounsaturated fats decreases body core fat. The foods that are high in monounsaturated fats include the following:

Olives

Nuts and seeds

Dark chocolate

Olive oil

Peanut butter

Drink lots of water

Water won’t wash away the calories, but it is believed that drinking water before meals reduces the calorie intake at the meal. Room temperature water is best for someone who is dehydrated, but for weight loss, the water should be cold. It is thought that the warming of the cold water by the body and the absorption of the cold water by the body burns additional calories.

Get adequate sleep every night

There are two hormones that affect calorie intake. One is the hormone ghrelin and the other one is leptin. Each have different affects on the body when it comes to weight loss. When someone doesn’t sleep much at night, it can change the way hormones are released. This can happen as soon as the second night of inadequate sleep. There is an increase in ghrelin and a decrease in leptin. Ghrelin is an appetite hormone and leptin is a hormone related to satiety (feeling full). An increase in ghrelin often affects the type of food eaten or craved, which tends to be sugary foods and fatty food.

It is best to keep counting calories and to continue with exercising while incorporating other new ways to loose weight. One of the best new ways to loose weight while walking and doing everyday activities is to buy a fitness shoe like StepGym shoes. These shoes will make the body work a little harder with every step to firm, strengthen, and burn calories more efficiently.

All it takes is seeing some results and feeling healthier to get motivated to move on to creating an exercise program to follow. Some of the easiest ways to exercise include the following:

TAKE THE LONG WAY

Walking from the back of the parking lot instead of from the closest open parking space in the parking lot will add step to your day, which means additional calories burned. This easy way to exercise is something everyone can do and include in a daily routine. Going the long way to a store in a plaza or mall is another easy way to add exercise to your routine.

TAKE THE STAIRS

It is tempting to take the elevator because it is fast and convenient or even to walk up a ramp instead of using steps. Taking the steps will not only burn more calories, it will strengthen and firm muscles faster than just simply walking. If there is extra time, go up the stairs, go back down, then up again to go to your destination.

WALK INSTEAD OF DRIVING

You can walk to stores, coffee shop, or church when you live close instead of driving. Depending on your shoes, you can wear comfortable walking shoes and then change into the shoes that match your outfit when you arrive. If you live far from places to walk to, you can park several blocks away from your destination and walk to and from your car to add another easy exercise.

CLEAN YOUR HOUSE

House cleaning isn’t exactly fun or relaxing, but you have to do it anyways, so make cleaning an easy way to exercise. Basic cleaning can be exercise when you do lunges as you vacuum or go up and down the step stool a few extra times when cleaning the top of the refrigerator or other hard to reach places

DO YOUR YARD WORK

It may be fast and convenient to pay a neighbor to cut your grass, but you are missing out on an easy way to exercise in addition to enjoying the fresh air and scent of newly cut grass. Digging, moving lawn furniture, planting, and raking all will burn calories and increase fitness.

PLAY WITH YOUR KIDS

Doing any sport with adults or children is another easy way to exercise. Running after kids, playing on the playground equipment, and playing catch are all not only easy ways to exercise but lots of fun also. The extra time with kids is good for building and maintaining a relationship with them.

USE WEIGHTS

Using ankle weights or small hand weights are an easy way to exercise. Ankle weights can be worn almost anywhere. Leg lifts with weights can be done while sitting at a desk or while watching TV. Small hand weights or weights on wrists can be used when sitting watching sports to easily incorporate exercises.

Buying a fitness shoe, like the StepGym shoe, to wear while walking is an easy way to make your muscles work harder with every step to burn more calories while firming up thighs, buttocks, and stomach.

Why are people walking more? It is because there are so many benefits to walking, which encourages increasing number of people to start a walking program. Walking is something that almost anyone can do no matter what their age or level of health is.

Some of the benefits of walking include the following:

•	Lowers “bad” cholesterol (LDL)
•	Raise “good” cholesterol (HDL)
•	Reduces risks and assists with level 2 diabetes management
•	Lowers Blood pressure
•	Burns calories
•	Improves mental health and increases a sense of well-being

STEP ONE

One of the first things you will need to do is get a comfortable pair of walking shoes. A good pair of walking shoes should provide support, protect joints against impact, and be durable. When you first start out, if you are walking for short distance, most any shoe will do. As you increase your walking distance, the type of shoe you have will become more important. Some people get fitness shoes like Stepgym, Sketchers, MBT, Curves, and others. The Fit Flop doesn’t provide the support needed to prevent injury when walking to become fit, and are purchased more for everyday use. The reason many walkers are choosing to buy an exercise shoes is because it maximizes the benefits of walking since muscles work harder due to the scientific design of fitness exercise shoes.

STEP TWO

Find a safe route to walk to begin an exercise program. If you haven’t been keeping fit, you will want to find a place that is level and that you will have good footing. A route with a lot of loose dirt or rocks may not be the best place to start walking and may increase the risk of injury. Walking in your neighborhood on the sidewalk or walking a few laps around a mall, are a couple good places to start walking. If you will be walking at night, be sure the area is well lit or walk indoors like at a mall.

STEP THREE

Take it easy when you first start walking. Warm up and do some stretches before beginning walking or any other exercises. This will reduce the risk of injury, pulled muscles, and painful twists. Stretching can also help reduce soreness after a workout. Walking or doing other exercise consistently will help you reach your weight loss goals and also your fitness goals. Start out slowly and gradually increase the workout as you get in better shape. You will probably become quickly discouraged if you “binge” workout … pushing yourself hard and over doing it, followed by not exercising at all for an extended period of time. This can lead to discouragement and also increase the risk of injury.

STEP FOUR

Set realistic goals and stick with them. One way to monitor your workouts and keep track of your progress is to keep a fitness journal. It can include everything from the exercises you do to what you eat. Electronic devices can help you keep track of how your doing and the results from your walks can be documented in your fitness journal. Exercise alone won’t get you in shape, you also need to eat properly and get adequate rest.

To make the most out of every step, buy a fitness workout shoe that maximizes the results of your healthy walks. Shoes like the Stepgym shoe will help you to firm up and strengthen your body more quickly than with traditional shoes that are often worn for walking. Go to Stepgym.com to buy your fitness shoes today.

It is time to start saying “Yes” to getting fit and creating an action plan to overcome the reasons you haven’t started your fitness plan or have stopped getting fit. Some common reasons and excuses for not being fit and how to overcome them:

I AM WAY TO BUSY TO EXERCISE OR EAT RIGHT

You know you can make time for what is important to you, so to begin, make getting in shape important to you. If you try to start too big, you will set yourself up for failure. Going from no time to exercise to setting a goal to go to the gym 5 days a week for 2 hours will rarely be successful. If you decide to go to the gym, start with once per week and when that is part of your weekly routine it will be easier to increase the length of time at the gym and the number of days at the gym. You can even start with short walks. Before you start to get ready for work, walk 5-10 minutes turn around and walk back home. Almost everyone can find 10 minutes a day a few times a week. Combine it with other activities like studying, time with family or friends, listening to music, or praying. Once the door is open to regular exercise and you start to feel healthier it will become easier to include a fitness program into your everyday life.

THERE IS A HOLIDAY, SPECIAL OCCASION, PARTY, ETC. COMING UP

Sure it may be harder to stick with a fitness plan that includes eating right when there are holidays, events, celebrations, and occasions that revolve around food and lots of it. (Thanksgiving is one holiday that comes to mind immediately). When tempted with an abundance of food, eat the “good” foods first and then go to some of the other dishes that are available. Eat slowly, eat in moderation, but still eat the seasonal and holiday foods that are made available. Enjoy it guilt free. More and more people are overweight, so it shouldn’t be hard to find someone at the gathering that wants to take a short walk after eating. Even those who aren’t concerned about their weight will appreciate a walk so that they can help relieve that overstuffed feeling faster.

I WANT TO BE MORE FIT, BUT I AM JUST TOO LAZY

Even if you are lazy by nature, you have probably spent years talking yourself out of getting fit. Now it is time to start talking yourself into getting fit. It begins with what you say out loud and from there should include what you think (self talk). Start saying things like “I’m going to stop being so lazy and walk 10 minutes a few times a week” and “I am not going to be too lazy to fix healthy meals” and “I won’t let my laziness keep me from getting fit”. Start picturing yourself meeting your fitness goals. Tell yourself that you can do it.

A simple fitness exercise to start out with is walking. You can do it in the comfortable shoes you already have, but you will get better and faster results wearing a fitness shoe like Stepgym shoes. To learn more about fitness shoes, how they work, and what a fitness shoe can do for your body, go to StepGym.com.

Even if it is an effective exercise and you are getting results, you will probably get even better results by making sure your fitness program is balanced and varied. This may mean that you will need to add some exercises that you may not care for or even just don’t like. It will be worth it to be totally fit. There are five types of exercises that should be included in a fitness program. They don’t all have to be included each day, but they can be rotated individually or in groups (vary the combination).

1.	Stretching-this should be part of the fitness program everyday that you work out to prevent injury. The advantages of stretching include increasing the range of motion of joints, warming up of muscles, and increased flexibility. Five to ten minutes of stretching is usually good. Vigorous walking and a variety of exercises can help stretch and warm up muscles. If walking is the exercise of choice, choose other exercises to warm up. Yoga is an exercise that stretches muscles and increases flexibility.

2.	Aerobic-this type of exercise is also known as cardio exercise or endurance exercise. It is because this type of exercise is good for the heart function, lung capacity, and circulatory health. This type of exercising includes any exercise that gets your lungs working, uses large muscles, and gets your blood pumping. Aerobic exercise helps to get oxygen transported throughout the body. This exercise can vary from dancing to vacuuming to jogging to swimming.

3.	Core Stability-core muscles are the muscles are the muscles in the pelvis, abdomen, and lower back. Core muscle strength is important to back health and keeping the upper and bottom body movements connected. These muscles help keep the spine braced also. These exercises should be done without support to the trunk of your body.

4.	Muscular Fitness-bone strength and muscle fitness is improved with weight training, which should be included a couple times a week. Muscle mass can be maintained during weight loss with weight training. These exercises can be done using your own weight like when doing push-ups and leg squats. The exercises can also be done in the gym, with homemade weights, free weights, at home, and doing resistance training.

5.	Balance Training-especially with older people, balance training is important to avoid injury from falls and tripping. Balance can be maintained with balance training. Exercises should be gradually increased as balance and stability improve.

Walking can be included in all fitness programs. Even when the fitness program includes more vigorous exercising, walking is a good way to mix things up and to use if feeling a little under the weather or recovering from an injury. When choosing a walking shoe, you can choose a fitness walking shoe like Stepgym to stimulate your muscles to work at their optimal level. Go to Stepgym.com to order your fitness shoe today.

You probably don’t know that the condition of having flat feet is also known as Pes planus, fallen arches, and pronation of feet. It is a condition that can appear in childhood or in the elderly. If you have flat feet, you also have probably looked at he bottom of your foot and realize it isn’t exactly flat after all! So what are flat feet and what are the causes of flat feet? Here are some answers to those questions and more.

What does flat feet mean?

The term flat feet refers to when the arch of the foot comes in contact with the surface that the person is standing on. The arch in the foot doesn’t develop normally or later in life the arch falls and the instep (arch) is collapsed. It is a common condition.

Who gets flat feet?

Babies and infants have flat feet and the arch develops, as they get older. Some children never develop arches in their feet. This accounts for about 205 to 30% of the cases of flat feet. Elderly people in their 70’s and 80’s may develop flat feet. When this happens, it is usually in just one foot.

What causes flat feet?

One of the causes of flat feet is that the foot never develops an arch as a child. Other causes include injury, illness, prolonged stress on the foot, unusual stress on the foot, pregnancy, and arthritis.

How are flat feet treated?

If there is no pain or discomfort from the flat feet, there is no need for treatment. If the flat feet are causing pain it the back, legs, and knees, then a doctor should be contacted. A gradual building up of material in an insert in a shoe is often all that is needed to help relieve the discomfort. Rarely is surgery ever done to correct the problem.

A walking or fitness shoe with a supportive arch can make walking more comfortable and relieve stress on the body for someone who has flat feet. Inserts can be added to shoes that don’t have a supported arch. To buy a fitness shoe, go to Stepgym.com. You can also find out more about how the Stepgym shoe works.

The weather finally cools down after the summer and the weather is perfect to exercise. No longer can the high temperatures be used as an excuse for not walking or exercising, until it gets cold! Though there are many areas that are enjoying comfortable temperatures, there are many parts of the country where winter has arrived. If you can gather up some motivation and dedication to continue your exercise program, you will find it rewarding to continue through the cold months.

Besides the usual benefits of exercising, during the winter months, exercise during the winter has the following advantages:

•	Prevents “winter blues”
•	Improves immune system
•	Eliminates “cabin fever”
•	Reduces winter weight gain

Of course there are the usual exercises that can be done inside at the gym or with exercise equipment at home, but it doesn’t have to be limited to indoor exercises. First check with your doctor that there is no problem with outdoor exercise during the winter if you are unsure or have any health issues.

Exercise can warm you up and make the temperature seem as much as 30 degrees warmer. So before you head out to exercise outdoors, dress in layers because once you get moving it will seem much warmer. You will also want to replace those layers after you exercise and you begin to cool down. Here is a suggestion for layers:

1.	Synthetic material (like polypropylene) that will draw sweat away from your body, this layer should be thin
2.	Fleece material for insulation and warmth
3.	Waterproof outer layer that is breathable

Avoid cotton, which will hold dampness and moisture in. Many people will overheat with a heavy down jacket or vest. Vests can be useful because it helps keep the torso warm while allowing for more movement. If you are leaner or it is especially cold, you can add a vest.

Asthma doesn’t mean you can’t exercise outside when it is cold, but you will want to put a scarf over your mouth or wear a facemask.

Even when you have the blood pumping, you will need to be conscious of your extremities that may not be staying warm enough. Again, it depends on the temperature. The colder it is, the more you will need to watch this. A second pair of shoes for the winter that are ½ a size larger than you normally wear will allow you to wear an extra pair of socks for warmth or to wear thermal socks, which are very thick. Choose mittens and gloves that are lined with fleece or wool to keep your hands warm. Don’t underestimate covering your head even if it gives you “hat hair”. About a third of you heat can be lost through you head, so make sure you have a hat or hood when outside in the cold.

Some recommendations for outdoor exercise are the same for the winter and for summer. Wear sunscreen and drink plenty of fluids. Sunscreen will protect your skin from the sun reflecting off the snow. The moisture in lotions will also protect your skin from windburn. Exercise causes sweating, increased urination, and heavier breathing, these all can contribute to dehydration no matter what the temperature is.

When weather limits your outdoor exercising you can increase the effectiveness of everyday walking with an exercise shoe like the Stepgym shoe. To get prices and ordering information to buy fitness shoes, go to Stepgym.com.

•	Posture while walking-normal daily activity may contribute to poor posture especially if you sit in front of a computer most of the day, walk with your back straight, shoulders square, and buttocks tucked in
•	Surface contact-when your foot hits the ground while walking, the heal should make contact first and then the rest of the foot should gradually make contact with the step finishing with pushing off with the ball of the foot
•	Position of head-your head should be horizontal with the ground, looking up or looking down or up will cause strain on the neck and back muscles, you chin should point forward
•	Arm movement-allow arms to gently and naturally swing while walking. Some people choose to carry weights while walking to strengthen muscles in the arms and not just the legs while walking

One walking technique includes power walking. This type of walking is not as fast as running or jogging, but it is at a much faster pace than regular walking. It is easier on the joints than running and jogging. It will get the heart pumping faster and will work the muscles more than the normal walking pace. Often arms are swinging which will help firm up arm muscles. Some power walkers may even overtake the casual slow joggers when walking in the park or around a track.

Even when you know how to walk, using proper walking technique will allow you to maximize the results of your walks. Another way to maximize the results of your walks is to buy a fitness shoe like the Stepgym shoe.
