Rich’s deep enterprise software sales experience for a broad range of technologies will guide the company’s sales into rapidly expanding markets for BPM.

Our CTO, Michael Rowley Ph.D., will be presenting Cloud Extend on May 5 at the Red Hat Summit in Boston. The theme is “Your Cloud Application Isn’t Done Yet,” meaning that your SaaS application is probably not done until you have added some level of customization.

In KMWorld’s recent post about our new screenflow product, Socrates, we here at Active Endpoints couldn’t agree more on two points. One, is that Socrates “shows great potential” since it empowers domain experts to design and deploy screenflow applications in just minutes, without any training or technical skills. Well, of course we agree there. Two, Socrates did go on trial for challenging the norm, which is just what we are trying to accomplish with Socrates. Why not give these expert, but usually non-technical, folks an intuitive way to easily and quickly automate their core processes to make their teams more productive? The uses cases are endless. Things like refund processes, sales promotions, ticketing, resolving Internet and cell phone outages. It’s wherever you have a question-answer workflow where your users are led to specific outcomes. Socrates uses the standards-based execution engine in our BPMS, ActiveVOS, so all the code is happening but there is no need for these domain experts to know it, or even know that it exists.

We have not seen anything quite like this before and are sure you have not, either. Take a look and let us know what you think – sign up for the Socrates Instant Trial. You’ll be designing screenflows faster than being able to digest any Greek philosohers’ texts, even the abridged versions!

Today, Active Endpoints announced the availability of Socrates. Socrates dramatically changes the way IT and domain experts collaborate to create prescriptive applications quickly and easily. The power of Socrates is that it allows a domain expert to design and deploy a screenflow‐based application in minutes, with no training or technical skills. Screenflow‐based applications include both question oriented workflows and automated services required to complete a task for a specific job function in the most productive manner possible. The innovation within the underlying technology of Socrates is that it provides a real and tangible breakthrough in ease of use, and is so unique it has a patent pending.

If you’re not sure which companies to watch in 2011, look no further. Independent IT analysts and IT department heads at cio.uk.com have submitted their expert picks. Active Endpoints is delighted to to be included in their list of 20 IT stars of the year.

Why Active Endpoints? Our process automation platform, ActiveVOS, makes it easy and affordable for developers, architects and IT project managers to develop, deploy and manage core business processes. Clearly, the market is actively engaging in this shift away from using expensive, packaged SOA and BPM applications.

2011 is shaping up to be a great year.

The details are in the press release attached to this post.

Active Endpoints, Inc., a leading platform provider for building custom, service-oriented business process applications, today announced total revenue bookings more than tripled in the third quarter of 2010 over the same period in 2009. The company achieved record revenue bookings for both direct software licenses and support revenue. Rapid growth continued in all major geographies and industries, especially within the government, telecommunications and financial services sectors. Notable customers include Qvantel, a Finland-based services provider to the telecommunications industry, and the United Kingdom’s Meteorological Office.

Another major milestone in the quarter was the release of ActiveVOS™ 8.0 business process management system (BPMS), the latest version of the company’s flagship product. Highlights of ActiveVOS 8.0 include support for Business Process Management Notation (BPMN), the addition of swimlanes, support for BPMN 2.0 boundary events, new data access integration capabilities, improved deployment management and expanded task management. The combination of these new capabilities improves the ability for all stakeholders – project managers, application architects, solutions architects and developers– to utilize ActiveVOS for designing, developing and deploying mission-critical, custom process applications even more effectively.

Active Endpoints, Inc., the leader in affordable, service-oriented BPM that development teams love, today announced that John Cingari has joined the company as Chief Marketing Officer, Tyler Drolet as Chief Financial Officer, and Henry Ancona, who has served on the boards of Pegasystems, Computervision (acquired), and OneSource Information Services (acquired), to the Board of Directors. In addition, René Bonvanie, Vice President, Worldwide Marketing, Palo Alto Networks and former Oracle, SAP, Veritas, and Serena Software executive, joined the Board of Directors in February of this year.

These industry veterans, who have created and managed both rapidly growing private and public companies, joined the company because of Active Endpoints’ unique vision to deliver affordable, service-oriented BPM in order to take advantage of strong demand in this segment of the large and growing BPM market.

The company continues to show significant traction, confirming customers want an alternative to traditional, complex and expensive BPMS’s. For example, revenues grew over 100% in the 1st half 2010 compared to the 1st half of 2009. In addition, the customer base continues to expand in all geographic regions and industries, including Telecommunications (Tele2), Media and Entertainment (itfc), Government (Naval Research Labs), and Financial Services/Insurance (Desjardins General Insurance Group).

Western Governors University is an online university that was facing student management challenges as it continued to grow at a significant pace. The university is in a rapid growth state, and was looking for a BPM solution, one that would be based on standards and could incorporate human tasks with automated processes.

The IT organization at WGU launched a search for a BPM system that was standards-based, supported a services-oriented architecture and easily deployed and maintained on their own. After considering several of the other solutions (including JBoss jBPM and coding a solution themselves), WGU selected the ActiveVOS business process management system (BPMS) from Active Endpoints.

This Upside Research Implementation Brief takes a closer look at the university, its challenges, and its decision to select a model-driven BPMS over a set of non-integrated propriety tools as the foundation for its SOA architecture. It also examines the business impact of its BPM deployment.

Download the Active Endpoints Press Release below for more details.

We are pleased to announce a marketing partnership designed to increase awareness of the importance of mainframes in Business Process Management (BPM). Join us along with GT Software at the SHARE mainframe users group conference in Boston, MA from August 1-5, 2010. See how today’s leading companies are conquering the challenge of integrating mainframe applications and data into BPM projects through web services. We will present how ActiveVOS™ Business Process Management System (BPMS) and GT Software’s Ivory® Service Architect can be used together to implement BPM.

Using ActiveVOS™ BPMS and GT Software’s Ivory® Service Architect together ensures that the BPM objective of integrating both people and systems is achieved by permitting the integration of mainframe applications. First, Ivory can be utilized to design a web service that is a composite of individual transactions and database accesses from the majority of popular mainframe systems. Then, ActiveVOS can be employed to model and deploy the overall business process, including Ivory-created web services. In this way, mainframe assets – no matter how granular or proprietary – are available to be used in BPM applications.

OASIS has announced that the Content Management Interoperability Standard (CMIS) 1.0 has been approved. As true believers in the value of standards for customers, we believe that ECM and BPMS have a natural, but not overlapping, affinity in companies that are developing a new generation of process applications. Now, users can rely on standards to protect them from “losing” their business logic to a proprietary integration.

In February, we demonstrated how CMIS can be used to integrate ActiveVOS BPMS with Alfresco ECM to create processes that combine content, people and systems in an open, standards-compliant way. It’s a very compelling demonstration of the value of CMIS. We are pleased that CMIS has been approved and look forward to a world in which business processes can simply and compatibly integrate sophisticated content management capabilities.

Neil mentions ActiveVOS as the BPMS that is making it possible for development teams to take advantage of new-style BPM. We appreciate the mention and, no surprise, believe Neil is on to a big idea.

What is that idea? Simply that for BPM to become mainstream, it needs to be the mainstream development style. Thus, the market requires a BPMS like ActiveVOS, which is designed specifically to be architecturally “correct” and to allow IT to change its development style by welcoming business analysts and developers into the “bazaar.”

Neil Ward-Dutton of MWD Advisors has written a blog post making the point that BPM has entered a new phase: one in which “…process management thinking and tools have now well and truly broken out of [a] niche…”

We couldn’t agree more. “New school” BPM should be commoditized, should be the default way of developing and enhancing “everyday” applications and should be devoid of “…lots of ceremony, burning of incense, and so on.”

We appreciate Ward-Dutton’s understanding of how ActiveVOS is attempting to mainstream BPM: by focusing on what we call the “extended development team” and enabling the various roles in that team to quickly adopt BPM thinking and tools.

bpmredux.com, the voice of BPM analyst and blogger Theo Priestley, has just published a mini-review of ActiveVOS 7.

We are very gratified to have attracted Theo’s attention and for his perceptive analysis of what makes ActiveVOS unique.

Theo’s overview of ActiveVOS is different from many others because he took note of our enthusiasm for BPM in general and ActiveVOS in particular. He talks about our (somewhat lame) attempts at humor and I thought readers of this blog might be interested in the full story.

With the change in the US to daylight-saving time in mid March followed a week or so later by the change in Scotland to British Summer Time, our meeting time got confused. While we were waiting for Theo, we made up new titles for ourselves. It was the kind of the idle, gallows humor a group sometimes indulges in before a big meeting. The “tm” symbols are a bit of a take-off on business cards we’d recently been given by a marketing firm that was trade marking ordinary terms.

Unlike some BPMS vendors – who would have put on their overly-serious faces when the analyst showed up – we went with the silly titles because we thought they were hilarious – and because BPM should not be a humorless discussion of dry technology. BPM is an exciting, vibrant product space as capable of generating passionate discussion as the next gizmo from a consumer electronics company associated with fruit grown on trees.

Here’s an image from the slide deck showing the titles we used to introduce ourselves to Theo:

Everyone agrees: for BPM to succeed as a new approach to developing applications, BPMSs need to be based on fundamentally sound application architecture. Today, that means using SOA principles.

Frequent visitors to our blog (and we hope you become one) will have already that we are in the middle of a fascinating discussion on the question of execution engines. Now, Rob Barry of searchSOA.com has weighed in with this post.

We welcome your comments and feedback on this topic.

Also, we would also like to invite you to our weekly webinar CTO Tuesdays. Every Tuesday at noon ET, 17:00 UTC, Active Endpoints CTO Michael Rowley discusses a single technical topic in 30 minutes, followed by a Q&A from the audience. In the recent past, we’ve covered topics like the BPMN 2.0 diamond control flow and engine-managed execution. Our most recent webinar delved into the the issues of dead path detection in BPEL and how to model in BPMN 2.0 to avoid duplicate activity execution.

You can always find the replays of the webinars on this blog in the “CTO Tuesdays” category (RSS feed here). Registration for the next CTO Tuesdays webinar is always available here.

Well, it’s the day after our big push to liberate Oracle SOA Suite 11g users during Oracle “Open”World in San Francisco.

And I am almost at a loss of words to describe our experience and the effect we seemed to have had. But, I gotta try. Here are some semi-random comments.

We are extraordinarily grateful for IDG News reporter Chris Kanaracus’s story, which perfectly captured the reasons we stood on a street corner for two days to make sure people understand that alternatives to high costs and lock-in exist.

Our social media meetup was a great success…and a lot of fun. We shared photos and videos of the event. (Here’s a video of the main reason for the party. ) I kid you not, the coolest people are the people who you befriend first online and then have the pleasure of meeting in the real world.

On Tuesday, October 14, we were hit with a rain storm that dumped a month of rain on San Francisco in about six hours. In spite of the high winds and Biblical downpours, we persisted in our mission of liberation from Oracle SOA Suite 11g.

You can check out videos on our YouTube channel (you have to see…and I mean you really have to see — the video titled “In the rain”), see stills in our Flickr photostream and, for our podcast subscribers, I’ve enclosed a short iPod-formatted video in the RSS feed. There’s also an HD-version of the video, for those that want to “be there” with us. Both are attached to this post.

Finally, you might find Otis Maxwell’s post about our attack on SOA Suite interesting. Otis’s description of how he found our meetup is very interesting. He calls what we did “suitcasing.” I think it’s simpler: we poked Oracle in the eye…and people loved it.

In case you are one of the folks who didn’t get the cards we handed out with the 11 things to consider before using SOA Suite 11g, here’s an image:

As you can imagine, pulling something like this off takes planning and dedication. I want to thank Sonal Rajan and Leslie Minasian, both of Active Endpoints, and Pat Flanders for their hard work and dedication.

We appreciate everyone who stopped by today and laughed with us (or cried, as appropriate) as we stood outside Moscone and made it clear there are alternatives to expensive, complex products like Oracle SOA Suite 11g. We’re glad we made you (and thousands of others) smile.

Last week, CTO Michael Rowley and I showed ActiveVOS 7 to Rob Barry of TechTarget’s SOA Talk blog. I know it’s a party foul to quote yourself in a blog post, but we are grateful that Rob chose to highlight one of the main accomplishments we believe we have achieved for BPM in ActiveVOS 7:

“BPM suites that focus on business users, they don’t get technical enough,” said Alex Neihaus, VP of marketing at Active Endpoints. “They become islands of computing and sit off by themselves. And with BPMS for architects and developers, the level of cost and complexity is beyond the level of what most people are willing to undertake.”

This “third way” between the cost and complexity of stacks from Oracle and IBM and the unfulfilled promises of Lombardi and Pegasystems to integrate easily across the enterprise are why we believe we have become so popular among development teams. Looking past old buying habits and the new politics of “end user” BPM, our customers are seeking great technology at an affordable price that can be used to create integrated processes as that are themselves services.

You can read Rob’s entire blog post here.

We wanted to make our readers and RSS subscribers aware of a new report on BPM that Forrester Research has recently published. It’s titled Forrester TechRadar™ For BP&A Pros: Business Process Management Suites, Q3 2009. While must you either buy the report or be a Forrester client to read it in full, the executive summary on Forrester’s website aptly sums up in a single sentence why BPM has become a very hot topic in enterprises: “Enterprises face increased demands for improvements in business agility; BPM tools can remove many of the barriers to success.”

If you are evaluating BPM for your organization, we highly recommend that you take a look at this report. It can only assist you in understanding the broad diversity of technical approaches to BPMS.

ActiveVOS is, for the first time, included in the broad survey of technologies that Forrester’s analysts provide in this report. We’re very gratified to have been included and we hope that if our approach to BPMS as described in the report matches your needs (and we bet it will), you’ll look take a close look at ActiveVOS.

As most software companies do, we have been previewing the next release of our BPMS, ActiveVOS 7.0, to journalists, analysts and important bloggers. Last week, we had the pleasure of showing the new release to Dana Gardner, who has blogged about his impressions on zdnet.com.

Dana talks in his post about a “new Moore’s Law” in which the limits of silicon to deliver productivity have been reached. Instead, he envisions a wave of innovation in process applicaitons that, combined with continued advances in hardware, re-accelerate productivity:

This new…law declares that productivity today is better gained from improving business processes and the way human tasks and machines tasks are combined to rapidly improve results. Productivity needs to come from ongoing process innovation and refinement.

This is a very exciting idea…and we are pleased to be one of the ways to enable the next wave of process applications.

Active Endpoints has been named to the SD Times 100 list for 2009. Our press release announcing this honor is attached to this post.

This award validates the both the market acceptance of our ActiveVOS business process management system (BPMS) and the thought-leadership that Active Endpoints has achieved with its vision of a BPMS that development teams will love.

Instead of me going on and on about why we cherish this recognition, I’ll just quote Alan Zeichick’s take on what the award is and what it signals to development teams that are considering a BPMS:

Unlike other awards programs, we don’t benchmark application servers, or count defects in operating systems, or consider annual sales values, or ask companies to submit flattering essays about themselves and their customers. The SD Times 100, in fact, isn’t a product award or a marketing award.

Instead, we work hard to identify—and highlight—where the “buzz” is. What are development managers thinking about? What are the talking heads talking about? What are competitors sweating about? What is the industry focused on? That’s the SD Times 100.

Thank you, SD Times and also a big thank you to our customers, who have made our BPM system such a success.
